Project 4 SPACE DIVERSITY BY EXPLORING STRUCTURE Redesigning Village House Typologies in Hong Kong
CUHK Master Thesis Instructor: ZHU Jingxiang March 2, 2018 - 2019
Space and structure have been closely linked since ancient times. Whether the ancient Romans invented the arch, which formed the cross plan of basilica, or the invention of Dou Gong in ancient China, the fifth facade of the building can improve the feature of space because of it. These are cases where architecture and structure are closely integrated. But nowadays, the division of work between architect and structural engineer is so clear. In pursuit of rapid construction of buildings, architects are often expected to minimize structural difficulties and provide more ideal efficiency for mass industrial construction. However, this does not mean that architects can place the structure in a secondary position, as if the construction of architectural space is actually not much related to the specific structural form, and the spatial quality can be improved through a series of subsequent methods such as ceiling or decoration. In fact, this kind of thinking actually ignores the role that architects should play most, which is the ability to combine structure with space. Hong Kong is famous for its large number of high-rise buildings. However, the existence of village houses actually tells us that there are also small residential buildings scattered in all parts of New Territories, which are also important architectural forms with Hong Kong characteristics. Because of historical problems, village houses often become the focus of people’s conflicts. But it is also obvious that the quality of village houses is generally poor and the living conditions are boring because of the layout. This thesis hopes to explore the impact of structural changes on space diversity in village house, and tries to redesign village house typology, in order to create a new way of thinking about the construction of small building in Hong Kong.

Project 5 ORGANICITY:
A NEW TERRITORY OF ECOLOGICAL DWELLING
CUHK Studio Work Instructor: Thomas Chung March I, Sem 2, Spring 2018
This studio attempts to rethink the notion of OrganiCity in response to the converging fields of urbanism and ecology, framed within the global imperative of sustainability. In particular we will explore possibilities of an ‘organic architecture’ for the 21st century post-materialist society, one that emphasises values of inclusivity and self-organisation while aspiring to an equitable commons. Exercise 1: Site Inverstigation Landscape, Infrastructure, Activities, Public Housing Exercise 2: Site Strategy River inheritance, Shared space, Productive landscape Exercise 3: Design Public housing design in NENT (North East New Territory) site.

Project 6 FABRICATING LIGHTNESS CUHK Studio Work Instructor: ZHU Jingxiang March I, Sem 1, Fall 2017
Lightweight Construction gains attention not only when disaster occurs, but also at a place where sustainable use of resources becomes more important. This studio explores the cnormously multilayered character of this subject matter through in-depth case study and intensive desgin exercises: Exercise 1: Fabrication Making the component of stick and learning the principle of joint, then building a 1:1 physical model. Exercise 2: Translation Applying new element on an existing living space this exercise encourage me to interpret a housing unit into a new one, which is feasible for a construction by component in collaboration with other's elements Exercise 3: Design I took advantage of the structure theory I had learned and then found a site on campus, design a student dormitory.
Exercise 1: Fabrication Component study This exercise is mainly about the structual significance of log construction.
Stick to space The advantages and disadvantages of lightweight structures are better understood through the constrution of a 1:1 scale model.
Exercise 2 : Translation
Through the research on the existing building plan, I translated it into a new building with the components I developed before.
