Editor’s Letter

THE CRUCIAL QUALITY YOU SHOULD LOOK FOR IN A RELATIONSHIP What do women want in a partner? From the many discussions I’ve had, most lists go something like this: ‘Sense of Humour’, ‘Success’, ‘Intelligence’, ‘Honesty’, ‘A Love for Travel’, ‘Loyalty’, ‘Chemistry’, ‘Generosity’, ‘Must Own a Horse’ (I

kid you not, I couldn’t make that up even if I wanted to)... But while all these traits are great— even vital—I’d like you to consciously consider an oft-missed quality. A quality that should really be number-one on your list, underlining the rest...kindness. Kindness is that one ingredient that can literally make or break a relationship. For one, it’s a predictor of many other desirable personality traits—warmth, trustworthiness, compassion, and generosity, which usually hang out in the same territory. When a man treats you—and others around him—with consideration; when he has the ability to focus outwards, beyond his own needs and wants, it’s a good sign that he has what it takes to make a long-term relationship work. A kind dude is more likely to offer help and support, consider your feelings, and have a solid support system. But this is also an interpersonal skill that will matter when things get tough, which will happen, sweet-pea. Because a kind partner is less likely to hit below the belt during a fight, or push things to a point of no-return, or have no remorse after the dust settles. And, most relationship experts agree,

when partners are kinder to each other, they are also less likely to split because it’s significantly easier to resolve conflicts when you’re not coming from a mean, selfish place. It’s important to realise that kindness is not an automatic response for many people, which is why you must consciously search for that quality in prospective beaus. It’s also important to know that this goodwill works both ways, so if you’re not a terribly considerate person yourself, get to work on that, stat. While we’re on the subject, I’d like to make a note of a few other qualities that might have missed the list: reliability, accountability, good conflict resolution skills, emotional intelligence, equality, authenticity... Now just throw in a horse, and you’re good to go. Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day!

CONFESSIONS

Cosmo readers share their most shocking stories and steamiest secrets. “After a bad breakup with a live-in boyfriend, I decided to stay in the apartment while he moved out. But he agreed to continue splitting our electricity and water bill till the end of the rental agreement...and I’ve been secretly over-charging him. He has no clue because he just takes my word for it.”

“After a night of dancing and drinking with a bunch of friends, we went to grab food. I accidentally dropped a bag of chips on the sidewalk, and a bunch fell onto the pavement. I simply picked everything up and put it back in the bag. Sounds gross, but I was super drunk and hungry!”

“While staying at my grandma’s house, I was looking for tweezers for my brows. She didn’t have any, but I remembered one of my mom’s old tricks and used a razor. In one swipe, I shaved off half my arch and had to use a black liner to fill it in.” —KARLENE A., 27

“I posted a photo of my male boss and me on Insta, and the next day, I saw my sister had commented as a joke, ‘Yes, that is my sister’s boyfriend!’ I immediately texted my (married) boss to apologise. Luckily, he was nice about it.”

“A few years ago, I hooked up with a guy who couldn’t get it up...unless I spoke in a ridiculous ‘baby’ way. I couldn’t do it without laughing, so he left. Fast-forward to now: my building had an empty apartment upstairs, and guess who moved in? FML.”

“I went out for brunch with my dad and the guy sitting on the next table was damn cute. So when my dad went to the bathroom, I started talking to him, hoping he’d ask for my number. I thought he was really into me, until his boyfriend showed up. Ugh!”

She started screaming ‘Cinnamon!’ and as we rushed out of the room, her roommate had a confused look on the face, wondering why she was yelling cinnamon.” —AKASH N., 33 “I broke up with a boy at school on Valentine’s Day (I know, I know), and he took off sprinting down the hallway, pumping his arms in the air and yelling, ‘I’m free! I’m single!’. We had been dating for two weeks.” —DRISHTI S., 29

UPFRONT BIG NEWS AND NEED-TO-KNOW INFO IN EASY BITES

HEY, HOW DO I WEAR...

TEXTURE CLASH Leather plays best against the most tactile of finishes: thick ropey knits, crisp indigo denim, and fluid silks and satins. The contrast in texture breaks up the outfit, keeping you in proportion, which can be tricky in roomy pieces. A warning: leather-onleather is best saved for the catwalk (or fancy dress).

Bin-Bag Trousers?

À la Lily Aldridge... cinched, shiny, and oh-so chic.

GREAT LENGTHS Tapered trousers should stop at the ankle bone, or two inches above it—leather doesn’t have the fluidity that other fabrics do, so it looks awkward pooling on the floor or over boots. Wide-leg styles can be two to three inches longer to cover a shoe.

By: MADDY ALFORD

WHY IT WORKS This season’s leather trouser is voluminous, tailored and polished, often with pleats or a paper-bag waist. Worried you’ll look like you’ve wrapped your thighs in a tietop bin bag? With a defined waist, heels, and a mix of textures, there is zero chance you’ll end up discarded at the local corner.

SKY HIGH A leather trouser needs added height. A flash of skin from a classic court is flattering, and your posture is more assured. Platforms are great under a wide-leg, but not so much at the end of a narrow taper due to the clunkiness of the sole.

TOTALLY WAISTED Leathers are bulkier than jeans or standard trousers. Plus, they have a slightly unforgiving sheen. So tops look best tucked in. Pushing up your sleeves to show some skin will make your outfit look more pulledtogether, too.

Naked Modesty “The image denotes ‘self love’. For me, that’s the most important kind of love, which can’t be faked, unlike some other forms. You must be able to love your body, embrace yourself, and express your emotions. It is only after you can love yourself that you can form connections with other people—these aren’t necessarily the people you know, but people who feel the same euphoria for the human body, and revere theirs just as much.”

Bed and Flowers “One of the pleasures of my grandmother’s last years was the fragrance of flowers from the garden, especially chameli and mogra. And she usually slept with a handful of them near her pillow. After she passed away in 2017, my mother continued to keep them on my grandmother’s bed—one of the many little acts of love by my mother, for her mother.”

The Child In You “This was during the Nepal earthquake in 2015, when I was doing some voluntary work in a remote village near Sindhupalchok. A lot of people hadn’t eaten in days. I saw the little boy on the right first, and offered him some protein bars. I thought he’ll wolf them down, but instead, he went running to his friend and offered him one, too. That’s when I took this photograph. It is pure love for me: unconditional and full of kindness and generosity, even in the time of such distress. It inspires me to this day.”

On A Mote Of Dust, Suspended In A Sunbeam “This picture evokes in me a familiar feeling, that I may have felt in the past, with a place, a pet, or in some kind of intimacy with another person. It’s difficult to describe that feeling because our experiences are always intangible...but I am aware of it each time it recurs. Love, for me is an expansion of the self, free from judgements and attachments.”

upfront

Protean “The image talks about religion, and love between Hindus and Muslims. Much has been spoken on the subject, but on a personal level, across my travels through India, I am yet to meet a person who takes pleasure in inflicting pain purely based on religious ideologies. The innate tolerance of an average Indian is, sadly, rarely celebrated in our country.”

Hair and Make-Up: MEERA SAKHRANI

“The photograph denotes self love. Being able to accept your being, in its entirety, the way it is, is among the purest forms of love for me. It is about finding beauty in imperfections and loving oneself without wanting to change anything. That, in turn, also makes you more appreciative of others and gives you the ability to love them unconditionally, too.”

upfront

American gymnast and six-time Olympic medallist Aly Raisman shares her POV on the perils of survivor-shaming.

“W

omen face a lot of pressure from society about our bodies. I think of my own experiences from school, when boys made fun of me for being ‘too muscular’, and wish my friends and I had learned about the importance of self-love then. It’s wrong to judge others based on what they wear or their body type. Each of us is free to dress how we want, for whatever reason: comfort, religion, or just because it makes us feel good. Each of us has our own sense of style. We all have different opinions about what is modest or sexy. We don’t need to agree—we just need to respect and appreciate the many differences among us. It makes me sad when I hear women criticised for wearing clothing that is “too revealing” or, worse, that they’re “asking for it.” A woman’s choice of clothing neither determines nor reflects her character or intentions—and it definitely isn’t an invitation for sexual assault. As a society, we need to understand why victim shaming is so harmful. Accusatory comments about one’s appearance or outfit can provoke a sense of shame, and trigger a feeling

of responsibility that is misplaced. This fans self-doubt, and makes it hard to speak up when something’s wrong. I’ve seen firsthand how victim shaming enables and perpetuates sexual abuse. It’s also shocking how common sexual assault is on college campuses. It breaks my heart to hear victims blame themselves because of their outfit or how much they had to drink. I wish everyone understood that abuse has nothing to do with clothing. It’s about power and entitlement, and it’s never okay. We can help neutralise this awful power dynamic by refusing to tolerate victim shaming. Object to it; defend the survivor; let them know they aren’t alone. We can disempower abusers—but only if Q we work together.

In India, too, women’s outfits are often blamed for sexual violence, and items of clothing like jeans are even banned in some places.

Several studies—over decades, across the globe—establish that a woman’s clothes have nothing to do with rape. According to one finding, sexual harassment is “about power”, therefore, a target dressed “provocatively” is not the ideal prey for the harasser—it can instead be seen as confident and assertive, and that can keep the perpetrator away. Almost concurring, another one in Psychology Today concluded that women with seemingly passive personalities, who may be dressed in layers, long pants and sleeves, might be more likely to be raped. Ironically, a large chunk of Indian lawmakers, politicians, and just people, continue to play the ‘asking for it by the way she was dressed’ game. It’s sickening, TBH. In 2011, local leaders in the Muzaffarnagar and Saharanpur districts of UP, had banned jeans for women in their communities. In 2014, a mahapanchayat held in Mathura also asked girls to refrain from wearing jeans. This meeting was reportedly attended by hundreds of people from about 52 villages. Girls in a village in Rohtak, Haryana, are not allowed to wear jeans or keep mobile phones, as that supposedly leads them astray. In March 2018, the then Rajasthan government had asked girl students to wear salwar kameez or saris, and not western outfits, to college. Although the dress code was later made voluntary, there are still numerous colleges across India where women, both teachers and students, aren’t allowed westernwear. It doesn’t stop in villages, or with the less educated. Many senior officials, too, like a DGP, a Union Minister, and many more, have gone on record to blame women’s clothes as one of the leading causes of rapes/ assaults.

NAIL HEART

Following a notable hiatus, nail art is set to make an almighty resurgence. We’re talking miniature, museum-worthy works of art with next-level 3D detail. Our favourite designs from the SS/19 catwalks? Oh, you know, just glass-domed nails housing tiny treasures, locks of hair framed with caviar beads (based on the Victorian-day penchant for wearing your lover’s hair in a piece of jewellery...nice) and Disney-villain-inspired spiky jewel hearts (pictured here). We recommend the slightly less intimidating crystal star charms found in the Nails&More NLA20 Nail Art Wheel, nykaa.com, `280, and the genuinely wearable Press On Manicure by Colorbar, `400, which is available in two high-shine chrome shades (that can be dressed up with bright, gilded charms). A new, spangly excuse for dodging any cleaning up.

IT’S TIME TO TALK ABOUT MEL ASMA

1

WHAT IT IS Dark, shadowy patches that typically surface on your cheeks, forehead, nose, chin, and above your upper lip, says US-based derm Marina Peredo, MD. More than 90 percent of sufferers are women (you can blame your hormones— more on that later), and it can appear on anyone. But if you have darker skin or a blood relative with melasma, you’re more susceptible.

Exactly how to ghost the world’s most annoying form of hyperpigmentation right TF now.

WHY IT HAPPENS

2

UV exposure and fluctuating hormones are two main causes. Both stimulate your melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) to overproduce, “so skimping on SPF, taking hormonal birth control, or being pregnant can put you at risk,” says Dr Marina. Inflammation can also cause melasma, and is triggered by plenty of culprits, including blue light from a phone, heat (looking at you, hot yoga), and using aggressive skincare.

3

WHEN AND HOW TO TREAT IT

YOUR GAME PLAN 54

Exfoliate With Peel Pads Gentler than a scrub, these textured pads are soaked in glycolic acid to slough away discolouration and reveal a glowier complexion.

Use ’Screen Go with one that is SPF 50 or higher, and has at least 10 percent zinc oxide (the mineral blocker creates an actual shield on skin, so UV rays can’t penetrate, says Dr Arash).

Winter is prime time for getting a jump-start on fading your melasma, says US-based derm Arash Akhavan, MD. “UVB rays are less intense, and people are generally spending less time outdoors—two vital factors for clearing hyperpigmentation.” A combo of gentle exfoliating peel pads, a brightening serum, and daily SPF (see the regimen below) is the best way to score an even tone in a minimum of four weeks, says Dr Marina.

Virtue Labs’ Creative Director Adir Abergel gives us the lowdown on how to recreate the sleek look seen on the catwalk at Ann Demeulemeester show. “Start by scrunching a handful of mousse throughout your hair, then combing a second handful just through the top, leaving the texture at the back a little more natural,” says Adir. Comb the hair back over the head and tuck behind the ears, so that it lies close to the scalp, then finish the look off with a slick of heavy hair gel or oil, to complete the high-shine finish. BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO CONTOUR

Working a contour palette to perfection takes practice. But if you’re new to the business of creating a chiselled face, concealer can come in handy. All you need is two concealers—one a shade lighter and the other one two shades darker than your skin tone. Start by using the darker one under the cheekbones and jawline to make them appear sharper, and the lighter one on the high points of your face. Et voilà.

WANT AN ANTIAGEING SCARF?

Yes, please! We’ve all read multiple studies that prove UV rays cause pigmentation, premature ageing, and increase the risk of skin cancer. Keeping this in mind, Skin Project, a luxury niche brand started by Meghna Ghodawat, has launched the world’s first-ever range of anti-ageing scarves called TANBAN. Created with a patented fabric that’s engineered in a way that doesn’t allow UV rays to penetrate through to your skin, these scarves provide up to 98% UVA-UVB radiation blockage. The scarves, in six styles, are priced at `6,099 onwards, and are available on skinproject.in.

MAKE THIGHHIGH BOOTS WORK IRL

Deepika Padukone

Put your best foot forward!

FOR THE ROMANTIC A pair of black thigh-high boots is the kind of wardrobe essential that’ll help you pull off many looks—right from girlnext-door to a party one. Cosmo tip: got a date and a concert on the same night? Opt for a head-to-toe black ensemble with an LBD, an oversized belt, and a jacket with just a hint of red. You’re done.

Jennifer Lopez

When JLo made an appearance in her slouchy, denim Versace boots, she quickly became the talk of the town. Imitating a pair of jeans—with pockets in the back, loopholes on top, and a black belt slipping through them—these boots can be styled with an oversized, button-down white shirt and hoops for a classic look.

FOR THE BAD*SS BABE Match the boots to your jacket for a cohesive look, and contrast with a mini dress in a bright hue to sweeten the deal. The best part: they’ll make your legs look long and slim.

“THE TRUTH ABOUT LONG-DISTANCE RELATIONSHIPS...” Radhika Apte, who was undoubtedly the toast of 2018—given her smashing performances in Netflix original series Sacred Games, Lust Stories, and Ghoul—offers up relationship advice like a #boss.

t’s said that distance makes the heart grow fonder. But anyone who’s been in a longdistance relationship (LDR) knows that the kilometers (and time zones—boo!) can make things super-hard. In fact, a 2015 study shows that 56.6% people perceive LDRs to be less happy and satisfying than geographically-close relationships (GCRs). Don’t lose hope, though, because, a new research in the Journal Of Sex And Marital Therapy suggests we musn’t negatively stereotype long-distance relationships. According to the study, LDRs may be higher-quality and more stable than many of us might assume—but only if certain conditions are met. Not many know that our hottie-AF covergirl, Radhika Apte, has been in an LDR for several years. She married Benedict Taylor, a British avant-garde violist, violinist and composer, in 2012, and both of them have been juggling their schedules ever since to make their longdistance marriage work. “Benedict and I met eight years ago through common friends. But to date, not many people know that I’m married. It wasn’t like I wanted to keep things ‘under wraps’ as many may think. It’s just that we got married and didn’t make a big deal out of it,” she tells us, adding, “It was a registered marriage. But honestly, marriage or no marriage, it doesn’t really matter to me, because commitment is commitment. If two people want to be together, they will be, irrespective of whether they’re married or not. In our case, we are both from different countries, and marriage suited us because it gave us entry to each other’s countries.” It isn’t as simple as it sounds, though. For our February issue, Radhika gives us the ground rules— from experience, obviously—for a successful marriage in a longdistance setting.

“Bened and I speak at least 10 times a day. At any point, we know where the other is.” ON SETTING TIMELINES FOR SEEING EACH OTHER “Bened (he hates being addressed as Ben, so I call him Bened) and I try to meet each other every month. Either he comes to India or I go to London, where he’s based. It’s really important to take time out to meet each other in an LDR. In our case, we’re committed to being together for a few days every month—sometimes we even cancel other plans to make that happen. There have been times when it turns into a month-and-a-half due to our schedules, but we don’t ever stretch it beyond that. If you really want to be with somebody, you make that effort; it automatically becomes a priority. And it’s very intuitive, it’s what we need, and what we want to do. Of course, this makes things expensive. Travelling is, perhaps, the biggest expenditure in our lives. But in order to make this work, it’s also important. There’s no formula, but the one thing every couple in a longdistance should do is set timelines about when to meet, and give that preference over other things.”

ON PRIORITISING SCHEDULES “Different work schedules and time zones can definitely wreak havoc on a relationship. But many a time, even when in the same city, couples can settle into a pattern that doesn’t work particularly well for one or both. So Bened and I have maintained a schedule as to when we will speak to each other, and we stick to it religiously. We talk more than 10 times a day. We always wish each other ‘good morning’ and ‘good night’—since he’s a few hours behind me, we speak FOR MORE GREAT STORIES, VISIT COSMO.IN

when he wakes up, and once when I’m about to hit the bed. He texts me before he goes off to sleep, and I do it as soon as I wake up. So we’re constantly in touch. At any given point in time, he’ll know where I am and I’ll know where he is. But this is not to control the other person. Some people think it’s not important to know where the other person is all the time, but for us it works out well. It’s just that you miss the other person so much, it’s all the minutiae that helps you feel closer. I have this parallel world where I imagine what Bened would be doing—how and where he is, what he’ll eat, how he’s feeling at that moment, whether he’s in a train or elsewhere, the cacophony around him. This helps me be a part of his world. But different people function differently. You need to decide when you can devote private, unrushed time to speak to your partner. Or the time when you crave connection the most. And how you’d like to do it— if you’re okay with spontaneous texts, phone/video calls and the like. There’s no limit to the kind of communication arrangements that can be made, as long it is mutually satisfying.”

ON HANDLING MOMENTS OF LONELINESS “Being in an LDR for so long, I can affirm that it’s extremely hard. People often ask me what I do when I feel lonely, when Bened isn’t around. Invariably, my response to them is this: loneliness has nothing to do with LDR. People can live together in the same house for years and still be lonely. Of course, when you want to

cosmo interview be with each other, when you come home and want the other person to be there, and that doesn’t happen, it’s difficult. But you get used to it. In today’s day and age, people travel constantly for work—it’s become a part of their lifestyle. So even if we were to be in the same city, and a shoot came up, I’d end up being on location for a good two to three months. That’s an inevitable part of my profession. We have accepted our situation, and try to make the best of what we have. The fact that we are constantly in touch just makes it easier for both of us. When we first started dating, Bened quit his job and moved to India. But we both didn’t think it was the right thing to do. We both take our work very seriously, and don’t think either of us would be happy giving it up for the other person. The thing is, if you aren’t happy, you can’t make anyone else happy. So, we make each other’s work a priority, and are also accommodating and encouraging about it.”

ON SETTLING FIGHTS “Well, every relationship, be it an LDR or a GCR, goes through ups and downs. Everyone has disagreements and fights. It’s the same for us. Our golden rule is that we never hang up on each other. I think it’s a very rude and insulting thing to do. When we’ve had a fight, we just end up saying, ‘I don’t wanna talk to you right now’, or ‘Bye, we’ll speak later’. And within minutes, you’ll catch both of us trying to call each other simultaneously. It doesn’t even matter whose fault it was, we both apologise. Not speaking for long periods of time because of a disagreement can aggravate the situation. We always let go of the fights, and forget about what had happened. Bened and I are very accepting of each other’s behaviour. We don’t have any rules about how to behave, either. It’s important to know that people make mistakes and that’s

102

COSMOPOLITAN FEBRUARY 2019

okay...to understand where the other person is coming from. I don’t know how to explain this, but there are no unnecessary restrictions in our relationship. For example, in eight years, we’ve never said to each other, ‘How come you’re not making me a priority?’. We have a lot of respect for each other, and there’s a certain understanding of the fact that we love each other, and no-one’s trying to put the other person down or hurt them intentionally. Being accepting of each other solves a lot of problems. I’d suggest focusing on the good qualities of your partner instead of sweating the small stuff.”

ON MAKING FLEETING VISITS WORTH IT “I’m a die-hard romantic, and Bened is very practical. So that’s a good combination. And we like doing cute things for each other constantly. Sometimes I’ll send him something funny, or write a poem for him. Bened, on the other hand, is extremely thoughtful. His gifts aren’t exorbitant, but very personal. He always remembers if I mention about wanting something, and he ensures he gets it for me. As for date nights, it really depends on the kind of day we’ve both had. Our work lives are so chaotic that we don’t end up going out much. But we make sure to do things we enjoy together, even if we are home. For instance, we both love cooking— that’s something we do often, and it’s always special! For both of us, the main objective is to be with each other. So our time together automatically becomes special, because we don’t put pressure on, or have any unrealistic expectations of, each other. I think, in long-distance relationships, the time you get to spend together is so precious that that becomes rewarding in itself. You erase all the superficial things from your life, and only want to live in the moment and enjoy it—that’s what makes it worth it all.” FOR MORE GREAT STORIES, VISIT COSMO.IN

ON COMMITMENT...AND EARNING YOUR PARTNER’S TRUST “A lot of people think LDRs are like a test of love. I do agree that they are difficult, sometimes even painful, but the most beautiful part about LDRs is that it’s a choice you make every day—that you want to be with this person even if you’re not together all the time. People, these days, seem to be afraid of commitment. I’ve heard so many people say, ‘Oh, I need my own space’, or they are frightened to let someone in because they are worried it will alter their fabric. So while LDRs give you a lot of space for self-growth, they also help you appreciate the other person and the value they add to your relationship. As for trust, it isn’t something you can find on your own. It needs to be formed together. A lot depends on how open you are about things and how accepting you are of the other person. Also, on how reassuring you are and, most important of all, what kind of bond you share. You don’t have to be perfect to find trust. Bened and I have been through some tough times, but what helps us is having no reservations or fear about being part of this relationship. It’s better to be open about your insecurities and discuss them, as that also makes dealing with them easier. Communication is key. But in the end, I’ll leave you with just one tip: don’t take advice from anyone. Find what works for you, and make your own rules. There’s no one right way to make it work. Do what you want, what he wants...find a way together. If you want to make it work, you will make it work. If somebody gives you excuses for why they can’t make something happen, chances are they won’t ever make it happen.” Q

When clothes are coming off at lightning speed, it can be hard to get your libido firing at the same pace as your partner’s. For women, arousal is a more sequential process that starts in your mind, and it takes time to bring your body on board. But know this: a single sexy thought can be enough to send ‘get ready!’ signals to your brain and nether regions, prompting desire and increasing vaginal lubrication, says US-based gyno Dr Elizabeth Poynor. Tap into this effect from the minute your alarm goes off, and your body will be screaming for a release by sundown.

ACE YOUR FLIRTING GAME With these fail-proof rules, we have you covered on all fronts... time to flirt like a boss, ladies. By Caitlin Carlson

T

he word flirting can sound quaint to the point of being lamely outdated. But the ability to banter playfully with someone you’re into is a time-honoured and valuable dating skill. “It heightens sexual tension and distinguishes your dynamic from a ‘just friends’ situation. It also helps you gauge compatibility and chemistry on so many levels,” says US-based dating coach Laurie Davis Edwards, Founder of The Worthy One, an online community that helps women in their love lives, and author of Love @ First Click. The only problem? In the era of digital dating, you may never have learned this analogue skill...or you’ve let it expire. Here’s how to signal you’re down to get much closer.

Use Enticing Words

Pepper In an Emoji

Shoot Over a GIF

Get a Little Fresh

Data from dating app The League found that women who write mmm, gorgeous, handsome, cute, or aww, in their messages are six times more likely to swap numbers with a match than their less flirty counterparts. Try a line like, “A handsome guy who also likes ice cream? Mmm...” says the app’s Founder and CEO, Amanda Bradford.

Toss in a wink, a smiley face, or a kiss—the top emojis used by both sexes when flirting on their phones, according to match.com’s Singles In America’ survey. But do so sparingly—not in lieu of a complete sentence when one is called for, says US-based celebrity matchmaker and dating strategist Jasmine Diaz.

“When texting, it can be difficult to express yourself, and even more difficult to show emotion, but GIFs take off some of the pressure,” explains Jess Carbino, Tinder’s resident sociologist. “You can send a flirty GIF, such as batting eyelashes, that conveys interest without having to be too forward.” It shows your comical side too.

When flirting with your thumbs, banter is the only thing you have to go on. “It has to create enough rapport that you want to meet up,” says Laurie. While chatting, look for moments where you can tease him, or be sassy with an intriguing challenge like, ‘I’ll tell you when I see you’ or ‘Wonder if you’re this funny IRL...’ He’ll bite.

Digital Flirting

Face-to-Face Flirting Lock Eyes (in a NonCreepy Way) “Some old-school methods are irreplaceable. There’s nothing sexier than two confident people making eye contact from across the room,” says Rori Sassoon, CoFounder and CEO of the New Yorkbased VIP matchmaking service Platinum Poire. A glance or two in which you make eye contact (for three seconds, max!) paired with a subtle smile sends a clear message: ‘I’m interested’.

Say Something Nice So this hottie picked up what you’re putting down and is approaching. Now what? “You can’t go wrong with giving an earnest compliment,” says Rori. Look for something you

find flattering about him (his outfit, his choice of drink), or mention something sweet he did, like giving his seat to another person or helping to get the bartender’s attention so someone could order a drink.

Recognise His Efforts If a guy tosses out a line like, ‘You have beautiful eyes’, and your response is, ‘I bet you say that to everybody’, you come off as skeptical, says Jasmine (even if it was a total line). If you’re interested in getting to know this dude, instead of deflecting or downplaying his comment (c’mon, he’s trying here!), simply respond with ‘Thank you’, then move the conversation along. If that feels too abrupt, throw some honest praise right back.

Send Signals With Body Language Consider all the nonverbal hints you give when you’re not interested in someone. You fold your arms, avoid eye contact, and lean back. When you want to show that you’re listening, engaged and intrigued, make sure to uncross your arms, look him in the eyes and casually tuck your hair behind your ear, advises Jasmine. Q

WAIT, IS HE INTO YOU OR NOT? Despite how intuitive women can be, 82 percent of us don’t know when we’re being flirted with, per a University of Kansas, US, study. The researchers chalk it up to the many different styles of wooing. A sincere flirt, for example, discloses his feelings (‘Umm, I like you’), although you might mistake him for simply being friendly. Other guys may opt for the polite style—acting “cautious almost to the point of being passive,” says study author Jeffrey A Hall, PhD. If he wants to hang or asks if you’re seeing anyone, take the hint: he’s into you!

DON’T STOP ONCE YOU DEFINE THE RELATIONSHIP Although there are other motivations (like sex), most happy couples who are long-hauling it keep flirting because it’s fun, says Dave Henningsen, a professor of communication at Northern Illinois University, US. “As a relationship develops, flirting may not seem as important, but it can show your partner that you’re still attracted to them,” says Dave. It may sound corny, but give this a try: write thought-provoking questions like, ‘What’s the most exciting thing you’re going to do solo this year?’ on index cards. Another option: ask each guest to write down one quality—a physical trait, personality quirk, or other detail—they wish your next partner would have, suggests Guy. It could be anything—a sense of adventure, or six-pack abs. Later, use the list as a reminder of things you deserve in your Q next SO.

DON’T GET TOO LIT “It’s okay to drink in moderation. The thing to avoid is drinking to numb painful emotions resulting from heartbreak,” says Guy. Limit yourself to one cocktail per hour, and if you start to feel like you want to drunk-text ex-bae, hide your phone or give it to your BFF.

CAN YOU REALLY FLIP A REBOUND INTO A REL ATIONSHIP? Out of the frying pan and into the fire… Introducing the latest dating term: The Bad Pancake. But can we have our cake and eat it, too? By Mel Evans

I

t’s the weekend, and you’re gearing up to tuck into a stack of fluffy pancakes. The oil is in the pan, and the mixture is good to pour. You wait for the bubbles to emerge before sliding the spatula under your half-cooked first attempt, catching the edge as you flip, dragging a trail of pancake mix from one side of the pan to the other as it starts to smoke under the pressure. You’re defeated. Still, you wait 10 seconds for it to cook, then transfer it to a plate and pick at it, until you decide it’s a lost cause and bin it. Introducing the newest metaphor for your dating life: The Bad Pancake (TBP).

Like the first pancake you try to make—a swooshed dough ball of nothingness—TBP is the first person you date after a serious relationship, destined to end in failure. “A bad pancake never turns out to be a real relationship,” says Molly Bernard’s character,

Lauren, to Hilary Duff’s Kelsey in Younger. So you put your good guy on the back burner in order to not squander a diamond in the rough— and you get yourself a bad pancake. Easy, no? But before you rush, UKbased relationship expert Annabelle Knight advises to be mindful of the post-relationship grieving process and what it brings to a new love—whether it’s a bad pancake or not. “Whether it was you who ended the relationship or not, it’s always best to allow time to process any residual emotions”, she says. “Quite often, a new person is just a distraction, which isn’t fair on him, or you.” But where’s the fun in that? Let’s add zest to this theory with some casual dating, where the combo

116

of dating apps and a perceived ambivalence towards sex can create a bad-pancake loophole. And when you’re in dire need of some flipping practice, it could be the antidote. “Casual dating is very different, and can be useful for someone wanting to move on from a relationship, because it can rebuild confidence both in yourself and in dating,” Annabelle says. “Enjoying yourself with someone on a casual basis can be a Godsend when you’re feeling low after a bad breakup, but it’s advisable to be cautious about jumping in the deep end too soon as this can damage your emotional state.”

make a stack? To an extent, the ol‘ adage that ‘the easiest way to get over someone is to get under someone else’ rings true here when you’re both in a similar frame of mind. “If you ended it, you might be ready for new love, because you’d have had one foot out of that relationship for a while before making the decision,” sex therapist Desiree Spierings says. “By the time you leave, you are often more ready to meet new people— you’ve already had a grieving period.” Annabelle agrees, but warns that at some point, you’ll need to address why your relationship ended, so you can learn from it. That’s where a bit of bad pancake could come in handy. “Identify what’s working for you

and what isn’t,” says Desiree. “Often you’ll see people still contacting an ex after a breakup, or stalking them on social media. If they’re honest with themselves, this might make them feel worse. Once you’ve identified what’s not working, set limits for yourself—such as, ‘I will not contact my ex unless it’s about unfinished housing or financial business’.” Before you think a bad pancake is the secret to relationship bliss, know that rebound flings are seldom destined to last. You can limp along, but ultimately you’ll need the head space that only comes with being on your own for a bit. “If you meet someone you like after coming out of a serious relationship, do yourself the courtesy of giving yourself some time,” says Annabelle. “The relationship stands a much better chance if you both enter it as happy, emotionally healthy individuals. Remember: the only baggage you need to take with you when you start dating is your clutch bag.” Filled Q with pancakes.

6 THINGS YOU CAN LEARN FROM A KISS From the first kiss, you’ll find out…

IF THERE’S A NEXT KISS IN YOUR FUTURE Mid make-out, your levels of the feel-good hormone dopamine should spike. But if you’re kinda meh as you come up for air, that dopamine hit might be lower, and it’s likely that your sexual chemistry just isn’t there.

HOW MUCH THEY CARE ABOUT THEIR OWN WELL-BEING Everyone has a signature mouth flavour, scent, and feel that stem from their diet, genetics, and overall health, says Justin Garcia, PhD, Research Director at the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University. Hints your date is a slacker in the wellness dept: thick saliva (which signals dehydration) and an ashy aftertaste (yeah, they’re probably a smoker). WHAT THE SEX WILL BE LIKE Kissing can help you figure out if your partner is attentive to what you might like, says Garcia. So someone who starts slow and spends time on each part of your mouth might focus on foreplay and pleasing you in bed. Someone who goes fulltongue fast might be a bit more selfish in the sack.

From locking lips longterm, you’ll sense...

THEIR MOOD RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW If it’s more of a quick peck than a lingering smooch, your partner might be tired or stressed. Whereas a full-on, drop-everything, holdyour-face make-out more likely means they are happy or relaxed, or have already been thinking about you for hours.

It’s nature’s ultimate chemistry test. “You can use what’s encoded in a make-out to learn so much about your partner,” says Sheril Kirshenbaum, author of The Science Of Kissing. Here’s what to look for.

YOUR RELATIONSHIP’S STATUS “Sometimes, a kiss between partners can be an indicator of how engaged and into each other they are,” explains Justin. If it’s been a while since your lips have touched, you might want to be more proactive about how often you two are connecting. If this is the eighth time you’ve stolen a kiss today, well, you’re rock solid. YOUR ODDS OF HAVING AN ORGASM For hetero partners, it’s speculated that consistently exchanging saliva may pass trace amounts of testosterone from him to you, which may boost your libido, says Sheril. Other research shows that women are more likely to get off during a hookup if it involves deep kissing. Q FOR MORE GREAT STORIES, VISIT COSMO.IN

2 A SUDDEN DOSE OF DAREDEVIL

You want to be prepared for any run-ins with your crush, which may be the reason you’re rocking a fresh lewk lately. But there’s more to it: when you’re really feeling someone, it can actually boost your own selfesteem, explains psychotherapist Jennifer Freed, PhD.

Strange but true: having an unrequited romantic fascination can make you seek out strong sensory experiences like hearing loud music or eating spicy foods, a recent study found. If you can’t satisfy your thirst, you turn to other outlets for a fix.

3 HARD-CORE MOTIVATION

4 SOME EXTRA INSPO

When you’re in a state of infatuation, “you get an extra shot of dopamine that can excite and energise you,” explains Jennifer. This pushes you to pursue things you haven’t before, like finally hitting send on that application for your dream job.

“The energy that comes from having a crush is really productive,” says Jennifer, who suggests channelling it into a creative project. Grab a friend and go to a paint-and-sip class, start a book club with your crew, or give your songwriting skills a go.

But Then There’s Obsession Territory If two or more of these apply to you, you might want to pump the brakes before things backfire. You spend more time stalking your crush’s Insta than doing actual work. You can’t think of anything else to possibly talk about but them. You lie or do sketchy stuff to get closer to them. You say yes to every favour they ask of you. You keep trying with them, even though they rejected you. (Move on, girl!) SOURCES: HELEN FISHER, PHD; JENNIFER FREED, PHD

FOLLOW THE ONE-HOUR RULE With big names in Silicon Valley telling us there’s no such thing as a work-life balance any more (your career path should be holistic, duh), and the average Indian putting in at least 10 hours of overtime a week (yep, skipping a lunch break counts), drawing those distinct—and necessary— boundaries between home and the office can be tricky. “On occasion, I was expected to attend restaurant reviews with Michael on weekends,” says Ruby Snape, former PA to the late film director and restaurant critic Michael Winner. “Often, I politely told him I wasn’t available.” Work out boundaries and stick to them. “I always turn my phone off at night,” says Donna. I also have a ‘pending’ file in my inbox where I put less urgent matters, and make sure they’re cleared every Friday.” She also sets recurrent reminders on her phone calendar three weeks in advance, for things like organising visas. Ruby goes one step further: “I review my to-do list every hour.” That sounds like a lot of Post-its. TAKE NOTE A recent study found that when you try to multi-task, it can take 20-40 percent longer to finish a list of jobs than if you work through the list in a sequence. Number your tasks in order of priority, then designate blocks of time to each. Employing the ‘autopilot’ technique could also boost productivity— combining one easy task (like replying to simple e-mails) and one hard task can improve your focus. According to other productivity experts, listening to music with a speed of about 60 beats per minute, like Vivaldi’s Four Seasons: Winter, helps too. Cue iTunes! Q

They’ve defined three styles of boundary setters: the separator (who completely switches off from work outside of the 9-to-5), the integrator (who divides work and personal time into smaller chunks during the day— usually reserved for those in a high enough position to stroll out of the office for a spa appointment at 3pm, then return at 5pm to finish a report), and the cycler—those who have weeks of intense grafting, followed by more chilled time, such as accountants or seasonal business owners. Studies show having time out can make employees more productive, so take that to heart and let yourself really clock off. If this sounds impossible, limit yourself to one hour on Saturdays and write draft messages, but don’t send them until Monday— weekends aren’t the time to kick-start a conversation. There are plenty of smoothie bowls to be Instagrammed and ladies’ nights that deserve your attention instead.

you, you, you

ASK COSMO ANYTHING From random little issues to major life dramas, we’ve got your back.

Q.

My new guy says Valentine’s Day is cheesy, and while I agree, I’m also secretly hoping to celebrate. How should I bring it up? A: On February 14 (and every other day),

you have to speak up to get what you want. Otherwise, on February 15, this new man could very well just shrug and say, ‘But you agreed this day was no big deal!’. Yes, you’re right in that he would be clueless not to do something romantic anyway, but guys often take your word at face value. So follow a cue from those candy hearts you see everywhere and tell him ‘Hug me’, ‘Adore me’, or ‘Kiss me’.

to say is important. Unfortunately, some men suffer from something we like to call selective relationship hearing—as in, when you talk dirty, they perk right up, but when you get deep, they may start to space out. (And yeah, there’s nothing worse than finally saying ‘I love you’, only to have him respond with ‘Yeah’ or ‘Me too’ because he’s staring at his e-mail inbox and not really listening to you.) So make sure you have his full attention. Find a quiet moment—no, not while you’re having sex—to look into his eyes and say those three big little words clearly.

Q: I want to win at BJs. How do I ask him to tell me what he likes? A: A lot of dudes will get nervous if you ask, ‘Do you like it when I lick or stroke up and down?’ over a morning coffee. So have this convo in the bedroom, where you can do some hands-on learning. Pull down his pants and experiment while requesting feedback. ‘Are you into this’ or ‘Show me how you want it’ are great prompts to, ahem, get the balls rolling. And if your guy

124

insists he loves everything you do, don’t be suspicious. He’s probably not lying.

Q: Is it a bad idea to pursue something with a guy who cheated on his ex? A: It’s not exactly a good sign. But here’s the thing: some men cheat because they’re players who don’t give a damn about the women they’re with, but others stray only in extreme circumstances and regret it. One mistake doesn’t mean this guy is a terrible person. Maybe he just screwed up. You have good reason to tread carefully, though, until you get the full picture of why he was unfaithful. And tell him from the start that if he wants to date you, trash behaviour is unacceptable.

Q: My guy’s been working out a tonne and is now ripped. I’m worried that he’s getting ready to dump me. Am I being paranoid? A: Let’s see...we’ve all known guys who suddenly got washboard abs and just as FOR MORE GREAT STORIES, VISIT COSMO.IN

suddenly decided to become single. And we also know dudes who got healthy to, well, get healthy. Bring it up, but don’t go into detail on his fitness routine. Instead, reveal your worries and ask how he’s feeling about your relationship.

Q: The new season is upon us and bold prints seem to be ruling the roost. But will it look OTT if done head-to-toe? A: It all depends on how you work the trend. You can opt for a shouty, logo-ed number (as seen at Balenciaga) and balance it out with a pair of opaque stockings, preferably in a dark shade. Or, you could take the Michael Kors/Louis Vuitton route and make the most of this trend by mixing things up—clash the same print in different shades or varying degrees to keep things interesting. If you think florals are not groundbreaking enough for Spring, animal print is still going strong. Pair your stripes with spots, and colourblock your way to create an ensemble that’s actually worthy of the hashtag OOTD.

SORRY NOT SORRY

What does it mean to be an Indian woman, one with unapologetic sexual desires, nonconforming orientations, and uninhibited kinks? These fierce, fearless powerhouses show the way. By: Samar Rajput; Photographs: Sushant Kadam; Interviews: Humra Afroz

Prabhleen Kaur Designer, 29 “I was in an abusive relationship that had made me submissive. I’d never tell him what I wanted, how I liked it, or even what I didn’t like. It took me time to get out of it, and even longer to understand that sex is as much about me. I’ve been with multiple men since, and it’s not a one-way street anymore. There are men who still try to patronise, though. There was a man who once told me to be more ladylike, and stop making too much ‘noise’. That was the last I saw of him. I’ve also stopped pandering to others’ opinions. Shaving my hair ‘down there’, for one. I like it natural, so I let it be now. If men express displeasure at the sight, I show them the door. And yes, I enjoy porn. There, I said it, for all of us.”

Angélique Raina, Brand Consultant, and Founder, polysophy.online, 28 “I dress a certain way, and that makes a lot of people presume a lot of things about me. I’m actually quite conservative and idealistic otherwise. For example, I don’t like wearing a bra; but I’ve never had flings, no one-night stands, only been in serious relationships. Some people, however, judge me based on my appearance. They label my choice of clothes as a bit too outgoing, even inappropriate. Also, if I’m being polite, it can be misconstrued as flirting. In fact, I had a similar experience with a woman too. She assumed I was a lesbian, and when I told her I wasn’t, she got aggressive, saying, ‘You are! You don’t know yourself, or are in denial’. So both men and women can make assumptions aboout you and your sexuality.”

Suruj Aka Glorious Luna Drag Queen, Performing Artist and Model, 26 “‘Meetha Gudh’ (sweet jaggery), is what the neighbourhood men call me. It was not a compliment. It’s one of the names I’m called, and have learned to live with. I first realised I don’t identify with my gender when I was attracted to a guy in school. But I couldn’t approach him, it was a huge deal to be queer! I told my parents much later, in a 30-page letter. My dad didn’t speak to me for weeks—it’s all okay now, but the outside world is still brutal. Even in a city like Mumbai, the bullying continues. Once, a man unabashedly grabbed my hand in broad daylight, asking me to hug him. No-one came to help. My previous landlord harassed me because I brought ‘bad name’ to the building. My broker would show up at my house at 5am with hooligans, asking me to cough up more money or I’d be evicted. I was.”

Priyanka Paul Illustrator and Poet, 20 “A lot of men (and women!) find me intimidating because I’m vocal about my sexuality. I am bisexual, and in my experience, women are more open to feedback and pleasure-talk in bed. Men, sometimes, can take offence. I once told a man I wanted to be eaten out. He was a bit taken aback, and retorted, ‘I don’t do that...’ but was quite experimental when it came to his own pleasures. There have been women like that too, with a ‘take it or leave it’ attitude. I find that odd. Also, when it comes to personal space and its violation, women can be very naïve and pushy. I’ve had women hitting on me, and despite no reciprocation, getting touchy, feel-y—one even went on to sit on my lap. Even some straight women don’t think much of touching casually. I think it’s because the girl-togirl boundaries aren’t really that well defined, unlike with men-women. Women can forget the ‘consent’ rule applies to them, too! That being said, when a man forces himself on you, it’s a different dynamic. He’s asserting his power on you.”

Natasha Noel Yoga Teacher, 26 “I was raped when I was seven. And continued to be sexually molested till I was 12. That completely changed my relationship with my body. I hated being a woman, and became a tomboy. It was much later that I realised that it was, in fact, empowering to own your woman-ness. But even then, sex was just a mechanical process. I’d be embarrassed, guilty actually, if I wanted to have sex, but felt like I had to do it when a partner wanted. I’ve shed all those inhibitions now, and life is so much better. I orgasm every single time, and actually enjoy sex, which is so liberating. I’m most surprised when women feed into stereotypes. I am well-endowed, so a friend once told me I have a ‘porn type’ body, and that in certain pictures, I look like I’m ‘asking for it’. I didn’t even have boobs when I was raped, so no, no-one’s ever asking for it!”

Merrylin Boro, Model and Entrepreneur, 25 “I have a lot of nudes on my Instagram, and what’s bizarre is that posting a topless image is usually considered an open invitation for men to send d*ck pictures to me. Many people, both men and women, tell me to stop posting such ‘explicit’ images, and that I am just trying to get attention. But for me, it’s a very personal choice. I feel it’s empowering, and a celebration, just like my sexuality. There should be no regrets about how you look, what you wear, or, even what you want...sexually, too. It’s 2019, and you can’t still think only men want or enjoy sex. We do, as well, if it’s a consenting environment. But when it comes to ensuring mutual satisfaction, a lot of men only think about themselves, even today.”

Pleated sleeve shirt, Bodice, `17,200; suspenders, La Perla, `47,652; stockings, stylist‘s own; earrings, Deepa Gurnani, `10,800; shoes, Brogue High AD, Melissa, `8,999; bag, Twist PM Bag, Louis Vuitton, `2,55,000

Sandra Nandeibam Model, 21 “‘How can a boy become a girl?’...the remark still haunts me. No-one knew what I was going through. They would mock me and bully me. It’s funny, though, because most salons and fashion boutiques in Manipur are run by transgenders, and everyone goes there! But they can’t swallow the fact that someone in their own family can turn out trans, too. I was punished, even beaten up. Eventually, my parents realised it wasn’t a disorder that could be cured, and they accepted it and supported me. But I was always okay with my sexuality. I lost my virginity to a boy when I was 10, and have had a number of partners since. And why not?! I’m a sexually-active woman. Yes, women do enjoy sex. And, by the way, yes, we do masturbate.”

Bonita Singh Rajpurohit Model, Activist and Visual Artist, 19 “I’m still a virgin. I’ve just gotten into the dating scene, and have only been with two men so far. It’s partly self-preservation—I’m not sure how they’ll take my trans status; and partly apprehension—I’m also very conscious of my body right now. I’m waiting for my sex-change operation before finally going ahead. But I do enjoy intimacy with men—the foreplay, the kissing. I know sexual intimacy will make the relationship more complete, but I feel it’s too soon for me. For the longest time, as a child, I was in denial about my orientation. I’d convince myself I’m just like other boys, not queer. But gradually, it became very difficult. I finally came out to my parents a few years back. But it is tough to find a partner. Men tend to become a bit hesitant when they find out I’m trans. It’s my identity so I have nothing to hide, that’s why I want to take things slow.”

“I’m bisexual, and a lot of men try to act like it’s something for their pleasure instead of an orientation. Many trivialise and fetishise it, saying things like, ‘Oh wow, I love lesbians, they’re so hot!’ or even, ‘We should have a threesome!’. But the lamest comments I’ve heard about bisexuality, by far, is that people who haven’t experienced sex with both genders can’t be bisexual (or that it’s not naturally possible to be attracted to both men and women). A lot of that has to do with the lack of education around sexuality. Also, we need to start treating young adults as people who can make decisions around sex for themselves, and provide a safe, non-judgemental space. Families and teachers, here’s looking at you.”

Bodysuit, H&M, `1,999; skirt, Forever21, `2,100; trench, Tommy Hilfiger, `7,299; sunglasses, model’s own; Liberty Choker, Myo, `7,620; Origins Necklace, Swarovski, price on request; I Am Ring, `3,680, I Am 2.0 Ring, `3,540 (right hand), Resilience Ring, `3,680 and Dreams Ring, `3,680, all Myo; shoes, Century Boots, Steve Madden, `9,999

Tanya Bedi Graphic Designer, District India, 24 “‘You don’t look like a virgin’. It’s a bizarre thing I’m often told. I mean, what does a virgin look like? Also, it is difficult for them to believe that I am so out of choice and not because of lack of partners. I grew up with body issues, which also gave me depression. That led to inhibitions about my sexuality, too. So I’ve never really let myself date anyone. I’m healing now, but feel I deserve some self-love first. That doesn’t mean I’m asexual. I am enjoy watching porn, use a ‘rabbit’, have made out with men...but not ready for anything more yet. Things would probably have been different if I had grown up differently—if I had been told I could be free with my body and behaviour. Who knows, I could have even experimented with my sexuality as a teen, been sexually active, had boyfriends like my friends do, and been less afraid. There are times when I fall for a guy and feel like I can be with him, but then anxiety takes over invariably, and I have to pass. For now, I am just taking it one day, one thing at a time.”

VINTAGE ELOQUENCE

Mix the past with the present to make way for new trends, and team it up with bold make-up to create a strong statement. Bonus: flattering accessories that’ll make sure all eyes are on you wherever you go. Photographs: Santiago Ruisefor; Make-Up: Stephanie Snizer

CORAL IS THE NEW RED The decades past experimented aplenty with gold. And coral lips, with a delicious undertone of orange, balance out gilded hues with élan. A sweep of highlighter takes things to the next level.

DIAMOND DUST Sequins are playing the main lead this season— not only when it comes to clothes, but also in make-up. There are no rules, so you’re free to treat your face as an artist’s canvas—a smattering along the cheekbone, on lids, or a stray heart-shaped sequin atop the brow bone...

Dress, Anthony Rivera; beret, Zara; necklace, Bimba & Lola

THE BOLD MOUTH Want to make sure all eyes are on you? Sport a red mouth! But not blood-red that’s been doing the rounds, pick a matte shade with a hint of orange, which delivers a vintage finish, helping you nail the retro-glam look. Brooch, Gucci; hat, Vanwho; earrings, Pipirisnais

beauty

EMBRACE EMERALD EYES A halo of gorgeous green around the eyes spells decadence. Emerald shades, with a hint of shimmer, are most flattering, especially when paired with a glistening, glossy pout.

Styling: TINO PORTILLO; Model: KEIDY GARCES/MZAGENCY; Hair and Make-Up: LUIS GIL; Production Assistant: ANGEL SANCHEZ

T-shirt, Karl Lagerfeld; stone hat, Kuerno; scarf, Bimba & Lola

HIGHLIGHT THEM EYES Neon sequins give a modern twist to a retro look. A dewy face with a hint of lip balm could use a pop of colour. You can choose to line your upper lids with either single- or multihued neon stick-ons— there are plenty of options online—to keep the focus solely on your eyes.

Dress, Anthony Rivera; beret, Mango; earrings (on the beret), Iconique

Q

Seasonal changes leave my skin so dry. How can I prevent it?

A: Get a Vitamin E cream stat. It will help improve the skin’s defense barrier and reduce fine lines that form on skin due to dryness and dehydration. Try The Body Shop’s Vitamin E Intense Moisture Cream-—it’s a rich, non-greasy concoction formulated with Vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, and wheatgerm oil that protects, nourishes, and locks in moisture for longlasting hydration. The Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture Cream, `895

Q

I’ve been hearing about the importance of skin’s pH levels. But what does that really mean?

BEAUTY EXPERT WE ANSWER A BUNCH OF YOUR BURNING BEAUTY QUESTIONS.

A: Our skin takes a beating from the environment, particularly because of pollution. The correct pH maintains the acid mantle of the skin, which keep you protected against such environmental aggressors. One of the key products in your skincare routine that affect the balance of your skin is a cleanser. Opt for one that draws out grime and impurities easily, without stripping your skin dry. This foam cleanser by Innisfree is formulated with Jeju calamus extracts that thoroughly cleanse make-up residues and urban pollutants, leaving skin feeling squeaky clean.

Q

I’m looking for a new serum. What are the hero ingredients that I should be looking out for?

What’s a good firstdate make-up look?

Maybelline New York Master Flush Stick, `749

A: One of the biggest trends of SS/19 is radiant make-up complemented with flushed cheeks. Opt for a soft-matte formula that glides on effortlessly and stays put for longer. While a clean face with rosy cheeks is always a good idea, if you like, you can take it a notch higher by opting for smokey eyes in a similar blush/rose tones. As for the lips, stick to a tinted balm to moisturise your pout and add a touch of natural colour.

Obagi Professional C Serum 15%, strawberrynet.com, `6,029

A: Vitamin C is a real skin MVP. It’s deeply hydrating, evens skin tone, and wards off signs of ageing. This amazing anti-oxidant is vulnerable to breakdown when exposed to light and air, so make sure you look for products packaged in opaque airtight tubes. Try the one by Obagi’s, it contains 15% l-ascorbic acid, a form of Vitamin C, which neutralises free radicals, accelerates collagen synthesis, and offers antioxidant protection.

COSMO PARTIES!

A STAR-STUDDED AFFAIR Cosmo hosted a private screening of Amazon Prime Video’s fun, new webseries Four More Shots Please!, and here’s what went down...

I

f you’ve been on the hunt for a fresh, fun show for your next binge-watch sesh, Amazon Prime Video India’s Four More Shots Please! is just what the me-time doc ordered. Starring Sayani Gupta, Manvi Gagroo, Bani J and Kirti Kulhari, the dramedy series chronicles the lives of four millennial women who are navigating their careers, relationships, and sex lives, while occasionally also dealing with an existential crisis. Relatable? We thought so too at the exclusive, private screening that Cosmo hosted right before the show went live on Amazon Prime Video. In attendance were the stunning primary cast of the show, Lisa Rani Ray (who plays a closeted bi-sexual), Anupamaa Dayal, Urvashi Kaur, Nitya Bajaj, Komal Pandey, Aishwarya Sharma, Payal Sen, Pushpanjali Chawla, among many others. Over gourmet popcorn, (but, of course!) bags of candy, and champagne, we recreated a movie-theatre experience for our favourite girls. And, as the night rolled in, we were hooked to the first

few episodes of the show, which not only gave us an insight into the lives of the fiesty female characters, but also touched upon issues like body positivity, bisexuality, online abuse, and female friendships. If you haven’t already watched Four More Shots Please!, we highly recommend you catch it on Amazon Prime Video now. (L-R) Sheena Sherwani, Pupul Pachauri, and Malvika Rallan Nagpal

Pisces

Taurus

01.20–02.18 You could totally be a life coach—your motivation is that inspiring, especially with the New Moon in your sign on the 5th. Don’t let small hiccups curb your money moves on the 19th, when Mercury unites with Neptune in your finance zone. That may mean keeping your grand plans on the DL for now, but don’t worry, you’ll soon shine bright enough for everyone to see. YOUR YEAR: So much goodness awaits, thanks to the hard work you put in last year. April brings new job opportunities, and by August, you’ll be majorly in love.

02.19–03.20 Slow and steady wins when it comes to Swiping Right this month—be just a bit cautious. That said, when Venus moves into your friend zone on the 3rd, a simmering flirtation may come to a boil. And don’t stress about mixed messages on the 18th, some people are just hard to read.

05.22–06.20 Kick off the month with a fresh stamp on your passport around the New Moon, on the 5th. With three planets in your zone of intimacy, you may also become smitten. But remember to stay grounded at work, as the Sun moves into your career house on the 18th.

06.21–07.22 Don’t freak, but you just entered the fast lane. Brace yourself for a li’l speed bump on the 13th, when Mars unites with Uranus. Love could strike anytime, but especially when Venus connects with serious-minded Saturn on the 18th.

10.23–11.21 Listen up, Einstein: before widely sharing your wisdom, enjoy some downtime at home with fam and old friends. Once verbal Mercury moves into your zone of creativity on the 10th, blast off with your brightest ideas. You’ll be major #Goals to many, and you’ll end up as the first pick for your dream gig on the 22nd.

07.23–08.22 Flirt your way to bae when the New Moon hits your relationship house on the 5th. At work, you might get pushback when verbal Mercury tangles with vague Neptune on the 19th. Don’t sweat the tiny details; focus on your new cuddle buddy instead.

11.22–12.21 Keep juggling like a pro, but watch for curveballs. A major creative breakthrough, —or a new swoonworthy match—could come out of left field on the 13th, when fiery Mars makes a conjunction with Uranus in your zone of creativity and love. Then, at month’s end, focus on your home base.

03.21–04.19 Time to stop scrolling and Get. Sh*t. Done. When Venus moves into your career zone on the 3rd, your success will skyrocket. Just check your ego when Mars unites with unpredictable Uranus on the 13th, and revisit your cash strategy when Mars moves into pragmatic Taurus the next day.

08.23–09.22 When Venus moves into your creative zone on the 3rd, you’ll be in the spotlight at work. You might even meet your special someone under the Full Moon, on the 19th, just a day after the Sun slides right into Pisces and your relationship house.

12.22–01.19 Girl, you have mad social skills. Loving Venus makes its annual appearance in your sign on the 3rd, which means you’ll be blessed with mega magnetism. Get ready to enter full-on party mode when passionate Mars moves into your zone of true love and fun around the 14th.

04.20–05.21 You’ll get a longawaited green light on the job front around the 10th, when verbal Mercury moves into creative Pisces. Stay calm if someone blocks your vision on the 18th, when Venus unites with Saturn. You’ll find a new thrill the next day, when the Full Moon falls in your zone of love.

09.23–10.22 Host your own throwdown on the 5th, when the New Moon lands in your house of true love and fun. On the 12th, a rare conjunction between feisty Mars and unpredictable Uranus enters your relationship zone. Prepare for a surprise crush-fession.
