GREEN CONVERGENCE LINE Location: Shenzhen China Area: 250 hectares Date: 10/2017 Group work: Xuefei Yang, Bicheng Wang Academic work Located in the edge of Shenzhen, the Green artery(mountain area) slowly formed since ancient time. However, with the rapid economic development in Shenzhen, the urbanization process has been accelerating. Greenartery gradually becomes the center of Shenzhen, infrastructure has been improved. Six roads, three tunnels, two subway lines divide the mountain into 6 parts, which results into habitat fragmentation. Meanwhile, High-voltage lines and landfills create holes on the habitats, and the expansion of the city gradually erodes the edge of the green mountain, causing serious ecological degeneration, especially for the local animals. This design aims at reconstructing the broken habitat, especially for animals living in the mountain; extending the habitat on the mountain to the habitat in the city; realizing the possibility of animal migration; minimizing the impact of human activities on animals and habitats; and achieving ecological restoration of the mountain edge. During the reformation process, with a focus on physical modelling and prototyping, four prototypes are established-----weave, fold, island and edge. And thus a variety of different models are developed to fit in every situation, used in large, medium and small scale. The broken habitat patches are reconnected, the animal migration corridors are establishd. The rooftop garden serves as an ecological stepping stone to connect the green areas for bird migration.

MODULAR STREET INTALLATION Location: Shanghai China Area: 60 hectares Date: 09/2017 Group work: Xuefei Yang, Lianliu Guo, Linan Zheng, Yu He, Yucheng Yu Academic work With the accelerated process of urbanization in China, migrant population to big cities is increasing every year. Shanghai, as the most developed city in China, meets a large number of migrant workers each year, but the situation of them is worth our attention. Our site, located in Shanghai, is a typical center of migrant workers, which is selected based on the proportion of migrant workers’ population and the seriousness of migrant workers’ problem. There is a terrible vicious circle of poverty between the generations of migrant workers. Many migrant workers come to Shanghai looking for jobs. However, they find themselves unlikely obtain deserved repayment and respect from this city. Migrant workers are too busy to enjoy their leisure time with various activities and also ignore their children’s education. The overwhelming burden seems to cause different diseases both physically and mentally. In order to satisfy their basic needs for small space and provide them with more forms of activities, I created an interchangeable modular design that can be combined or repurposed in different functional ways and we put them on the main routine, so that the trunk drivers, the woman busy with the housework and their kids can have the chances to have some leisure time playing and chatting in these street spaces on the way to home.
SAFETY ISLAND HIGHLINE Location: Rotterdam Netherlands Area: 1.4 hectares Date: 11/2017 Individual work Personal work Turning abandoned highlines into community parks bacomes more and more popular after The High Line in New york. And designers try reforming them into different types in order to accept special conditions in different cities. So when I get to learn the unique conditions about the highline in Rotterdam, I found it has potential two-story interaction spaces and it’s surrounded with communities and educational institution, which means there are many children and teenagers calling for entertainmental and safe spaces. Based on their demand for playing safely and different features of 4 blocks, I turn it into a safety island highline for children. And in order to save the dim condition caused by the narrow streets and high-density communities, I use light as basic element to create many interesting forms and functions that emphysize great importance on the connection between the two layers and provide enjoyable and educational experience for kids as well as their parents.

TRAVERSING THE EDGE Location: O‘Hill, Charlottesville, Virginia Area: 0.5 hectares Date: 9/2018-12/2018 Individual work: Xuefei Yang Academic work When I walked through the forest in the first time, I could feel the clear change of spaces formed by plants and topography. I found it very interesting to see how the space transits into another. The edges that exist in O’Hill show various form, such as hard or soft, coarse or fine. Their various forms relate to the topography, the infrastructure and many other elements. The existing edges in the forest are out of order and irregular. In order to give visitors specific and diverse experience when they traverse the transition zone, I introduce the movie frame switching and try to use the cinematography to design spacial changes. It’s an artificial way to change the natural environment that make the transition zone more clear and constantly changeable. Beside the physical and spacial features, I also consider the living organism, the succession in the ecotone, the animals who live in econtone and how people interact with these animals and the ecotone. The animals, such as rabbits, squirrels and deers, tend to live in the econtone to get more foods, and at the same time, they are sensitive animals so I need to consider the adaptation of animals when I try to introduce more human activities . I use crescent which derive from the most effective ecotone shaped like waves, and I use the two sides of the crescent and the space enclosed by crescent for different uses. I try to organise the different activities of both people and animals in the edge.

First, it wants to provide a outdoor classroom for students to discuss and exhibit outside the building. Second, the hole on the wall and the water channel combined to help solve the flood or runoff problems. Thirdly, the outdoor classroom also act as the expansion of the building both in the Projectand planspace. showing the location of cross section transect material
