Charrette

“The intense final effort made by architectural students to complete their solutions to a given architectural problem in an allotted time or the period in which such an effort is made -- (Merriam-Webster)

We have been or are and will be going through the same struggle and we always want to help!

http://www.harvarddesignmagazine.org/issues/33/are-charrettes-old-school

Charrette

“A meeting in which all stakeholders in a project attempt to resolve conflicts and map solutions.” -- (Google) “The exercise was a loud, raucous, frenzied, stressful, though profoundly creative experience."

We want to be open to opinions from all relevant parties

Charrette

The word charrette is French for "cart" or "chariot." (Wikipedia)

“Physical Vehicle that holds the work of students

https://www.grandemasse.org/?c=actu&p=alors_charrette_et_charrett_club

Charrette Late Middle English (denoting a cart or wagon): from French charrette, literally ‘cart’; current sense dates from the mid 20th century, possibly with reference to the use of a cart in 19th-century Paris to collect architecture students’ work on the day of an exhibition.

We want our value and work transcend our studio workshop spaces and be seen in an “exhibition hall”

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arriv%C3%A9e_d%27une_charrette_dans _la_cour_des_Beaux-Arts,_Gazette-St-Germain-des-Pr%C3%A9s,_sept-65.jpg

Disclaimers Disclaimer 1 We do not encourage the all-nighters and the low respect for the time of architects that embodied in the earlier definition of Charrette. However, no word is completely neutral if one dig deep enough for its meaning and history; perhaps the best we can do is focusing on the positive implications we want to carry on.

Disclaimer 2 Although our precedent is based on a strict and exclusive style (Beaux-Art), we, as modern day classical architecture students, seek to embrace various styles while rediscovering the wisdom and beauty lay in the history.

For The ND SoA An attractive and informative exposition of what the school does and believes

For The Current Students An accessible way to raise awareness of important matters, and to gain necessary communication skills to better express creative ideas through writing

For The University/ Other Universities An open resource for understanding and cooperation

For The Alumni

An inclusive platform to promote a reconnection with the school, and more interaction with students

Platform for Mutual Understanding Some have the passion to express; some pine to listen. We aim to address such demand and supply. Communication Skills We need the ability to enter the conversation. Respectful discussion and shrewd perspectives are essential for the education of future architects. We want to be anonymous when it comes to being an architect, but we want to be articulate when it comes to design ideas. The Mindful Review Review promotes reflection, reflection generates progress. A mindful review of in-school and broader architecture events can foster the mindfulness much needed for personal, professional and community growth.

Precedent Study Within the School

This week in Walsh Fam (Rome Dome Home) Via Gmail: informative but only within students and mostly one way info Fact: We actually have a Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notre_Dame_School_of_A rchitecture#:~:text=U.S.&text=The%20University%20of% 20Notre%20Dame,and%20post%2Dgraduate%20architectu re%20programs.

Quick Break Down Perspecta

Retrospecta

Constructs

“The Yale Architectural Journal is the oldest studentedited architectural journal in the United States and is internationally respected for its contributions to contemporary architectural discourse with original presentations of new projects as well as historical and theoretical essays. Perspecta’s editors solicit articles from distinguished scholars and practitioners from around the world, and then, working with graphic design students from the School of Art, produce the journal.”

"The annual journal of student work at the Yale School of Architecture. Part historical record, part monograph, Retrospecta seeks to capture and record the current life of the school. Documenting one academic year, each issue contains exemplary work from both the design studios and support courses. The daily activities of the school, including lectures, symposia, exhibitions, and studio reviews, are also highlighted through numerous candid photographs and quotations. The journal is edited by students and published by the school.”

“First Published in January 1999, Constructs is a bi-annual news magazine highlighting activities and events at the Yale School of Architecture. The large-format, 28-page publication features interviews with visiting professors, previews, and reviews of exhibitions, symposia, and lectures sponsored by the school, as well as faculty and alumni news. It also has feature articles on issues relevant to discussions in the design studios and on architectural events worldwide. The magazine is edited by Nina Rappaport and designed by Jeffrey Ramsey. It is distributed free of charge to alumni and Yale affiliates and sold in architectural book stores internationally.”

Quite Serious, Quite Academic.

Quick Break Down There are numerous lines of publications ‌ There is cooperation with Professional Publishers including: Actar, Sternberg Press‌ We can prehaps learn the most from the Real Estate Review (Edited by students) and the Studio Reports (accessible on Issuu) Those two are less formal However, we should make changes (the studio report is ~ 150 pages and only covers one studio We need to have a clear profile and define what is our core value and main focus

Harvard Design Magazine New Geographies The Incidents Studio Reports Platform Harvard Design Studies Other Titles

This is just a quick run-through to initiate

more thoughts. We will continue working to gather more Ideas. Perhaps we can work to write a short report of a presedent study?

Our Short-term & Mid-term Goals

Provisional Content Ideas Fall Semester Issue + Spring Semester Issue?

Recap from the Last Touch Point I Have a team meeting at the end of June/beginning of July with all members ( to be scheduled before June 25 th) to know everyone’s skills, interests, thoughts and expectations :) II Make timelines for the booklet and for the first publication (week by week?) maybe we can aim to have the first publication out at the end of the semester, if not, the end of this year Timeline should include: Studio to be covered People to be interviewed Numbers of projects to be scanned and titled Make an example booklet on issuu, showing our goal and values. It is similar to an elevator pitch or PowerPoint presentation, but in magazine form!

III Things to be designed: a title font with construction lines the theme, visual cue that would tie the whole magazine together, and trans generation Plan to play with some material to get a sense of the workload? For example, we can, applying the visual style we will come up with together, try to cover studio news of the Greek Studio led by ex dean Lykoudis or the India studio by prof Krupali or the skyscraper studio by prof Stamper or ?? IV Look through SAO rules, but this should be a less urgent task. Since we would like to be affiliated with the AIAS. After working under AIAS and closely with SoA , we can think about getting University wide recognition after the first issue? V We should decide how much focus we want to put in delivering detailed scans of student works as well? Since many alumni I talked to expressed a desire to look at student’s work in detail. The online thesis review somehow delivered that. Given the nature of our media, perhaps we should think about how to use our strength?

Now - First meeting following extensive work to substantiate the plans July Prototype Issue

August - A Debut Pitch to the SoA Students and the Faculty The End of Fall 2021 Our First Ever Fall Issue

What does the Demo Issue do? Creating a solid representation of our ideas to show the school And .‌ It is simply a joy for us to create something tangible!

Prototype Demo Issue From the Operation Perspective Textual -Write a piece of Studio cover of the class of 2020 Greek Studio? (Alternatively we can write about Krupali’s India studio from two years ago?) -Write the interview piece with ex-Dean Lykoudis and Dean Polyzoides - Write the Charrette History Cover Visual -Work on font ( Colour, Size, Spacing according to the piece it is covering) -Work on page arrangement code -Cover Page Arrangement -The actual design of the Demo Issue with the three parts of contents Strategic -Researching for future content -Planning of the Fall 2021 Issue (define section length and directions, contextualize the previous general plans) -Outreach and contacting target people -Logistics of publishing legitimately

From the Content Perspective I A history of Charrette Culture from the original chariot (we can perhaps have a logo from the design of a chariot? ) to the BeauxArt School tradition, to the general architecture deadline reference, and eventually the workshop culture. Disclaimer: might seem provincial that we are only covering the academic and pedantic? But we can say that we will cover different stories every issue! Represents the by-topic kind of framing II An Interview with ex Dean and new Dean (Suggested by Esteban, details needs further planning, including contacting, interview question planning etc.). Represent the future column for interview and guest writers III A cover for a studio from 2019 (we can look into the class of 2020 Greek Studio or India Studio? Or Dunay’s? TBD). Represent the studio/In-school news cover
