Yachad is dedicated to addressing the needs of all individuals with disabilities and including them in the Jewish community. Yachad members participate in several fun, educational and spiritual activities each month. There are Yachad chapters located throughout the United States, Canada and Israel.
YACHAD SHABBATONIM (WEEKEND RETREATS) At a Yachad Shabbaton, each Yachad member is matched with a volunteer advisor. The Yachad participants and advisors are hosted by local community members or on college campuses. Yachad advisors are trained to facilitate conversation and to encourage the Yachad members to socialize freely with their hosts and host community members. The Yachad members are active participants in the regular tefilla (prayer) service. These weekends offer communal Shabbat meals so that Yachad members and community members can socialize and meet each other. Shabbat meals are filled with spirited singing, dancing and Yachad traditions that encourage inclusion and practice social skills. In some communities, Shabbat meals are hosted in individual community members’ homes, allowing the Yachad members and the hosts a more intimate setting to get to know one another. This also allows for community hosts with young children to participate in the Yachad Shabbaton. Some Shabbatonim are held on college campuses, such as New York University, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Maryland, and Yeshiva University. These events allow the Yachad members to experience what campus life is like, from taking tours of the campus, to hanging out in the Hillel House, to staying in the dorms. The communities have a unique opportunity to get to know many of the Yachad members and familiarize themselves with their abilities. Many community members are often surprised by how impacted they are by the Shabbaton experience and how many of their pre conceived notions about individuals with disabilities change once they have become familiar with our members on an individual level.
