Who & What is Allsouls Paterson “Church planting puts the Christian community at the heart of mission — and mission at the heart of the Christian community.” — Tim Chester
THE CITY OF PATERSON Known as Silk City, Paterson has struggled to retain it’s prominence as an important American city, despite having an array of largely untapped resources - from the high concentration of beautiful beaux-arts buildings to its rapid access to the interstate and nearby global commerce centers, proximity to New York City, and the rich history associated with the birthplace of the U.S. Industrial Revolution. Like many American industrial cities, Paterson’s economy is no longer prospering as it once was. New Jersey's third-most- populous city is one of the worst places to live in America, according to a 24/7 Wall St ranking. The website ranked Paterson, New Jersey, as the third-worst place to live in America behind only Miami and Detroit. THE CHURCH PLANTER Yadi Henriquez was born in an immigrant family from the Dominican Republic and raised in Paterson, NJ. Although he grew up in the church, he was not awakened to the truth of God’s grace until he was 28 years old. He was saved on the couch of his one bedroom apartment and has followed Jesus Christ since. Not long after salvation, he committed to serving in ministry any way he could as a layman. His desire to serve the Church grew into a sense of call to vocational ministry.
In 2013, Yadi joined the staff of Christ Tabernacle NYC with desires of getting experience in a multi-ethnic church. While serving at Christ Tabernacle NYC, he also gained more clarity on his calling and began seeking training to plant a church. Yadi has the heart to plant a Spirit-led, Jesus-centered, socially conscious, transcultural church in the heart of Paterson, NJ. Yadi is married to Janine and father of Dwayne (23 y/0). EDUCATION AND TRAINING Yadi Henriquez is currently completing a two-year pastoral residence at Zion NYC Church, a new church in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. His education includes The School of Visual Arts (B.F.A.), Princeton Theological Seminary and will enter Redeemer City to City to be trained up in church planting while still pursuing further theological studies.

Why the City of Paterson? The City of Paterson is New Jersey's third most populous city, only 18 mi from New York City.
Paterson has the second-highest density of any U.S. city with over 100,000 people, behind only New York City.
2015 census estimates 510,916 people within Passaic County The City of Paterson currently has 52 distinct ethnic groups.
The second-largest Muslim population in the U.S. with over 40,0000.
Paterson homeowners have the second highest housing cost burden in New Jersey. As a result, homelessness is all too real in Passaic County, especially in Paterson.
Over 29.1% of children live in families below the poverty line.
Paterson's conditions appear to be worsening, other struggling cities like Newark and Camden's financial and economic conditions are changing for the better.

FOUNDED BY ALEXANDER HAMILTON Paterson was founded in 1792 by Alexander Hamilton. The city is the first planned industrial center in the United States, and the factories and mills were powered by the Great Falls of the Passaic River. The city became an industrial powerhouse. Firearms and locomotives were made in the city. Much of the industry has fled, but some manufacturing businesses, such as custom furniture builders, call the city home. During its boom years, the city became known for silk mills, which gave it its the nickname: Silk City.
5 things you need to know about Paterson. "One reason why the church has so little influence over the world, is because the world has so much influence over the church." — C.H. Spurgeon
WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS "Paterson lies in the valley under the Passaic Falls its spent waters forming the outline of his back. He lies on his right side, head near the thunder of the waters filling his dreams!" That's the first few stanzas of William Carlos Williams' epic poem "Paterson," which was published in 1946. The poem was a key part of the movie "Paterson," which is about a bus driver and poet named Paterson, who is played by Adam Driver. GREAT FALLS NATIONAL PARK The Great Falls of the Passaic River is the centerpiece of the Great Falls National Park. The falls and the surrounding parkland were added to the inventory of the National Park Service in 2011. The 77-foot-high falls are the second largest — Niagara Falls are the first — in terms of volume and width east of the Mississippi River. The park service recently started a project to build an amphitheater in which the audience will be treated with a view of the falls and other improvements. The park district includes Hinchliffe Stadium, which is one of the few remaining stadiums where Negro League baseball was played. LARGE IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES in Paterson’s top nationalities are Dominican, Puerto Rican, Peruvian, Mexican and Colombian, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. However, the city also has an estimated 4,200 people of Arab descent, mostly in the southern end of the city in a neighborhood with one of the highest concentration of Arab-Americans in the country. The majority are of Palestinian, Syrian and Jordanian descent. The neighborhood is home to the Masjid Omar Mosque, which was targeted by the New York Police Department in a widespread surveillance program that targeted "budding terrorist conspiracies." GOVERNMENT CORRUPTION Jose "Joey" Torres, who was most recently elected mayor in 2014, pleaded guilty earlier this year to corruption charges. He sent city Department of Public Works employees to do work on his home and to work at his daughter's business. The Torres case is one of the most high profile scandals, but the city has been plagued by a number of lesser scandals. GRABBING HEADLINES Major newspapers all over the country are recognizing all that the City of Paterson has to offer and encouraging readers to see the Silk City.

CONVICTIONS Help answer the question, “What does God want us to be as a church?” his question then allows us to begin setting up measurable goals for success at Allsouls. All of our measurable goals flow directly from the core values, or who God has called us as a body and as individuals to be. (1 Peter 2:9-10)
What does God want us to be as a church? “We must show the next generation what it means to be a holy nation. This holy nation isn't America. It's the church of God.” —Jackie Hill Perry
WORD SATURATED God speaks and gives life through His Word. That affects the way we will preach, giving ourselves to a regular diet of expositional preaching. Further, we will endeavor to be a church whose entire “life” is built around God’s Word. (2 Timothy 4:1-2; Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 2:42) GOSPEL CENTRALITY The gospel is the great mystery that the Bible unfolds. The life, death and resurrection of Jesus – even more, the supremacy of Jesus in all things – ought to pervade and shape every member & ministry of the church. We want to behold, protect, and give the gospel. (Isaiah 56:7, Matthew 21:12-17; 2 Corinthians 32:8) SACRIFICIAL COMMUNITY God’s Word creates life in individuals, and then draws those individuals together into community. The power of the Gospel is put on display to the world when individuals lay aside preferences in order to show others, of diverse backgrounds, Christian love. (1 Corinthians 14:26; 1 Peter 2:9)
INTENTIONALLY LOCAL The local church is God’s intended focal point for discipleship & mission in this world. Therefore – while maintaining meaningful partnerships with other local churches, networks, and denominations – we will always strive to give priority to local church life, exercising meaningful membership, discipline, and participation in Christ’s ordinances. (Acts 1:8; Mark 16:15) CULTURE OF HUMILITY Jesus accomplished our salvation by humbling himself, and God delights in demonstrating His power through weak vessels. Therefore, we will aim to build a culture which is marked by humility, and which values what God values, however counter-cultural. (1 Corinthians 3:6, Acts 2:47) WATCHFUL SHEPHERDS Anonymity is toxic to the Christian life, and God gives pastors to churches to shepherd the people. We will not neglect this sacred responsibility, but give ourselves to establishing an ethos and patterns of presence, knowledge, and care. (Matthew 24:14)
RENEWAL/MULTIPLICATION Jesus accomplished our salvation by humbling himself, and God delights in demonstrating His power through weak vessels. Therefore, we will aim to build a culture which is marked by humility, and which values what God values, however counter-cultural. (1 Corinthians 3:6, Acts 2:47)

DISTINCTIVES help answer the question, “What makes our church unique?” Churches, like people, have unique DNA. The beauty of the body of Christ is that there are many expressions of it. It is amazing to observe how little direction is given to the details of how “to do” church. God has not called every church to operate within the same structure and philosophy. Our distinctives help us verbalize some of our unique DNA as a church.
What Makes Our Church Unique? “Anything for the glory of Christ that will change the world will always have significant demonic opposition... Work hard and pray even harder by faith! Put on the full armor and fight! Expect God to move mountains!” — Dr. Eric Mason
AUTHENTICITY We value being honest about who God is, who we are, and what God desires us to become as we strive to cultivate a Christian community that is deeply committed to each other out of genuine love and concern for wholeness and unity. (Romans 12:9; 1 Corinthians 1:24; Colossians 3:1-17; Philippians 1:21) CREATIVITY As image bearers, we at Allsouls seek to, first, bear God’s image through our creativity and, second, help other image bearers put their creativity under the authority of God through our example, teaching, training, and encouragement. (Exodus 35:30-33; 1 Timothy 4:14-15; Colossians 3:23-24; Ecclesiastes 9:10-11; )
THEOLOGY Gospel-Centered Theology directs everything we do. We want to help all generations do the same by teaching them Gospel-Centered theology and applying it. We want to show everyone that His Word is the path of life where true promises are made and kept by the covenant-keeping God for the good of his people and the glory of His name. (2 Timothy 4:3-4; Titus 1:9–11; Ephesians 4:14; Romans 16:17) DOXOLOGY We are what we worship. We know that worshiping our own image cannot satisfy but worshiping the one in whose image we were created in can and will bring joy eternally. Because God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him, worship is not vain and love is real. This is why everything we do is to this end: the worship of the triune God. This drives our ministry and our lives. (Matthew 28:18-20; Romans 1:16; Romans; 10:9; 1 Corinthians 1:24; Colossians 3:1-17) LEGACY We are focused to be much more than a church to attend, but a community centered on the person and mission of Jesus Christ. We're actively working to build a great Paterson, renewed and redeemed by the gospel. (1 Timothy 6:6; Proverbs 13:22; Proverbs 22:7; )

RED LIGHT This group focuses on serving the women on the streets of Paterson who are engaged in prostitution. These women are primarily on Broadway and Auburn Street and are usually homeless and dealing with addiction issues. Our goal is to meet them where they are, assess their emotional and physical needs and attempt to meet those needs. We walk the streets with supplies and information in hopes of building relationships and serving these women.
OUR STRATEGY? “Church Planting puts the glory of God on display as it creates new communities that reflect the diversity of his creation.” —Doug Logan, Jr.
OPEN TABLE Exists as a food outreach for those in our neighborhood who may need a good meal. The story of the gospel is embodied each week as we gather around the table. That table should should shape our lives, hearts, and imaginations. We can live as the people of Jesus by gathering around tables and providing a meal for the people in need throughout our community. OPEN MIC Once a quarter, Allsouls hosts an Open Mic Worship Night where creative people from across the City of Paterson are invited to share their talents to the glory of God. These events function much like traditional open mic nights, in which artists may choose a time slot during which to take the stage; the difference being that Open Mic Worship Nights are centered around worship, community, and Jesus. Open Mic Worship Nights were started with two goals in mind: to bring people together in unity to worship in spirit and in truth, and to give a platform to gifted worshippers who otherwise may not have had one. OPEN HOUSES Is a convenient way for you to hear our story, to learn about our mission, and to meet some of the leaders in our church. It’s the perfect time to introduce yourself, to ask us any questions you may have, and to connect with others from our church. Music, refreshments are provided and full childcare is available for families. KIDS COMMUNITY DANCE Kids of all ages are welcome to join us for free ballet classes.. Our goal is to bless the children in our city by offering our friendship as a church community through dance and hospitality. We also enjoy connecting with one another outside of class through events and performing opportunities. First and foremost, we desire that each child feel seen, known, and loved. We long to see our surrounding neighborhoods united together in community, regardless of background. Our hope is to use the medium of dance to encourage children through mental, physical, and artistic skill and healthy, meaningful relationships. “Let them praise His name with dancing…” – Psalm 149:3. Saturday mornings at Paterson Museum, September-April. I HEART PATERSON This group focuses on serving and loving the City of Pateson. We will be serving meals with NYC Rescue Mission, an established organization that has been working with the homeless for 143 years. They provide the food, clothing, shelter and counseling necessary to help those in need get back on their feet and off the streets. SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY Exists to help you grow into the knowledge of God, Self, and Others by the grace of the gospel, in the presence of community, through the power of the Spirit for the glory of God and the good of others.

OUR DOCTRINE We hold to the historic teachings of Christian orthodoxy as articulated in the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed. In addition to the abridged belief statement below we hold to the Confessional Statement of The Gospel Coalition and the five doctrinal distinctives of Acts 29.
Affirmation Of Faith "Passion is not a substitute for clarity. Volume is not a substitute for content. Emotion is not a substitute for conviction." — H.B. Charles Jr.
SCRIPTURE IS We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the verbally inspired word of God, the final authority for faith and life, inerrant in the original writings, infallible, and God-breathed. (2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:20-21, John 16:12-13) GOD IS We believe in one Triune God, eternally existing in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit— co-eternal in being, co-eternal in nature, co-equal in power and glory, having the same attributes and perfections. (Deuteronomy 6:4, 2 Corinthians 13:14.) CHRIST IS We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful man. (John 1:1–2, John1:14, Luke 1:35) We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption through His death on the cross as a representative, vicarious, substitutionary sacrifice, and that our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead. (Romans 3:24, 1 Peter 2:24, Ephesians 1:7, 1 Peter 1:3–5) We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven and is now exalted at the right hand of God where, as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry as Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate. (Acts 1:9-10, Hebrews 7:25, Romans 8:34, 1 John 2:1–2). HOLY SPIRIT IS We believe that the Holy Spirit is a person who convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; He is the Supernatural Agent in regeneration, baptizing all believers into the body of Christ, indwelling and sealing them unto the day of redemption. (John 16:8–11, 2 Corinthians 3:6, 1 Corinthians 12:12–14, Romans 8:9, Ephesians 5:18). HUMANITY IS We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that through Adam’s sin the race fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God; man is totally depraved and of himself utterly unable to remedy his lost condition. (Genesis 1:26-27, Romans 3:22-23, Romans 5:12, Ephesians 2:1–3, Ephesians 2:12) SALVATION IS We believe that salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed on Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins. (Ephesians 2:8–10, John 1:12, Ephesians 1:7, 1 Peter 1:18–19) CHURCH IS the body and espoused bride of Christ, is a spiritual organism made up of all born-again persons. (Ephesians 1:22-23, 1 Corinthians 12:12–14, 2 Corinthians 11:2) We believe that the establishment and continuance of local churches is clearly taught and defined in the New Testament Scriptures. (Acts 14:27, Acts 20:17, 1 Timothy 3:1–3, Titus 1:5–11) We believe in the autonomy of the local churches, free of any external authority and control. (Acts 13:1–4, Romans 16:1,4, 1 Peter 5:1–4)

JOIN US Joining in what God is doing in the City of Paterson can happen is many different ways! As we said, some can participate from afar, and some can up close. Those from afar can do so in four ways:
How To Participate “A lack of generosity refuses to acknowledge that your assets are not really yours, but God’s.” — Tim Keller
PRAY Our community is still forming. A lot of the people joining are on the fringe. That means our community is going to be fragile and need a lot of cultivation and prayer. We want to see the Gospel truly speak to the hearts of our people. It won’t be easy. Our leaders and our people will greatly benefit from prayers of people who care about God’s mission in Paterson. GIVE We are working with two major groups: young people and seekers. Both do not tend to be major givers. We are going to need external support to survive as a church. We ask that people consider being a part of our support system by giving towards what God has called us to do. SHARE Word of mouth is still the most powerful marketing tool. Tell people about what God is doing in our community! It may means someone hearing through the grapevine and showing up on a Sunday. Or another God speaks to, to partner in different ways. The greater the network, the more ways we can see people partner with us. Please share the word and see how God uses it! TIME AND TALENT Please consider how you may be able to help Allsouls Church Paterson through your vocational and skilled passions. We will always be in need of legal advice, accountants, content creators, graphic, grant writers and web designers, etc... DONATE When you donate your new and gently used items or extra musical instruments laying around that you and your family no longer play? Donate your used guitar, drums, violin, saxophone, flute, clarinet, and more. Your used musical instrument donations can make a big difference in the lives. We can use or sell them on our online auction site and use the revenue generated to fund valuable employment training and job placement services for people in your community. Thank you so much for your interest in the Paterson Church Plant. God has amazing things in store for this city. We are overjoyed at the thought of you stepping into this journey with us!
