Being the first room that you ever draft, You shall be cautious with the dimensions Because an error, even of a millimetre Multiples When your drawing is translated to life

“Given a grid, snap an acute angled triangle, a cylinder and a spanning bridge on the any possible permutation of the prescribed positions. Provide each side of the construction, some doors, windows and walls. Mark OTS and double volumes as prescribed for each floor” is what the exercise said.

By now, Precision is still a prerequisite, Nevertheless, its obvious. Developed is the harmony of symbols, A language recognised all over, A Common tongue to share Construction details, information in hand. Thus made is a story of elements, On how they constitute a structure

In a parallel universe, in a planet called Glorm, an advanced alien civilization called Zurcs reside. Zurcs are ellipsoidal creatures who have evolved their bodies to float around, instead of walk.

Besides their body’s shape, they share many behavioural features with humans. Like human civilizations, they are social creatures and prefer dwelling in a society. Their cities are structured like

decentralised networks, links between small clusters of tall skyscrapers separated by dense forest cover. The image above shows one such cluster of skyscrapers

Observation and Analysis Observation is the key to Innovation. Bearing this in mind Thy shalt See through spaces, Their principles of organization. See through people, Their Personality and Style. Finally, See through societies, Their socio-cultural aspects

17

Personalization is the consideration of human element in design Personalised spaces require a thorough understanding of the client’s nature. Their opinions, most of the time drive out of their style, their likings and disliking. Constructing a mind map of behavioural qualities is an efficient way of deducing someone’s personality In Mike Tyson’s case, Observing his behaviour in and beyond the ring, both in his youth and in the present, it became evident that he was undergoing a spiritual change, his decisions were getting more mature as he grew. Noting that shift, the mind map was divided into two segments. Left one showed his present while the right was his past. Although he was under a change, some traits from his past lingered along with him. So, mentioning them was equally important. Viewing the mind map after completing, all of those qualities came down to one word, ‘Intimidating’

18

Deciphering Styles

Holding the word ‘Intimidating,’ while examining the magazines of architecture and interior design, certain furniture elements seemed to resonate Tyson’s style. In-order to imagine an interior space designed for Mike, those furniture elements and backgrounds were cut from the magazines and made into

a spatial collage. The swimming pool , centre table, teapot sets and the crimson rug signify his intimidating luxurious lifestyle.

should reflect his changed nature and therefore, colours that reflect his energy and calm are used in the poster. Both yellow and cyan are from his champions belt.

An event that the present day Mike Tyson, father of 7 would more likely host is an event on awareness of Self Defence. Poster for this event

Laying with his tattoo, the illustration says that as he conquered the champions belt, he’s in his way of realising a spiritual calm.

The oldest living city Va r a n a s i “Banaras is older than history, Older than tradition, Older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together” - M a r k T w a i n

23

Wandering around the city older than history, Pacing through the streets and the ghats, Familiarizing with the Moist breeze of the holy river Tasting the road side cuisine Acclimating to the new smells Sometimes from a stall nearby Other times from the animals. Throughout our walks, Clarifying the topic to study, the city never failed to reveal it’s history Although much is destroyed, Less is extinct

Light and shadow of the site were mapped by a team. Constructing on the data, I marked possible heat gain over the edges of the plot. One after the other, when I was securing the sides from heat gain; the idea of weather shade came, but then, it would be better to shade the exterior walls with the buildings own shadow. ‘What it I offset the floor plate of first floor beyond the plan of ground floor? And what if I do the same with second floor?’ An illustration of the said extension is pictured above. Such a structure would naturally create two semi open spaces, one double volume and other single. Also emphasising the gradual transition from public to private domain.

28

Simultaneously, a group mapped movement of people and vehicles around the site. Overlaying the movement over the study of light and shadow and also acknowledging the fact that for tourists, visiting the heritage city, Ahmedabad; interactions with a bunch of locals could provide more exposure to our culture, an opportunity seemed to develop out of the proposed offset. An opportunity to develop mutual interactions between locals sitting on an ‘Otla,’ under the shade of the offset and the tourists, in their way

to the TIC building. Representing the above mentioned situation, a silhouette of two people talking can be seen in the illustration above. Because of the map produced under the study of Static and dynamic elements of Manek chowk, I was aware of the fact that there was a huge parking lot on the north of the site (right side in the image above, coloured in green). For a fact I knew north light is the best source of indirect natural light, so providing windows on

the north would have brought light to the entire site. But, the sight of vehicles parked right at the eye level was not pleasant. So, for the ground floor, I planned to keep window sills above the eye level, when seated i.e. 1350 mm from the floor. Similarly, for the first floor, where I planned to construct a lounge, I intended to show the contrast that Manek chowk offers; right beneath the bright blue sky, most of the time covered with calm clouds lies a network of densely packed narrow streets, always bustling with

traffic. An irony, routine for the locals would rather be fascinating for the tourists. Here too, for the transition to happen, sill level of the window was placed above the eye level. Such that if you are seated on the couch, you can see only the sky, which complements your calm lounging state, but as you get curious and stand up, you see the chaos.

29

Gathering all inferences from the site, Thoughts were assigned measures Cross checked using Anthropometry And then, were given a form. Constructing plans, elevations and sections, Thoughts were finally translated into a universal language of architecture

Parekh House by Charles Correa Acknowledging the play of levels in the Parekh house, each level in the model was crafted individually and paced one upon the other, held firmly between the two walls. Hence the model is dynamic in nature. Anyone can pull a level out to see within.

SCALED MODEL 34

On testing the cuboidal structure as shown in the image above, nature forces applied on the members were identified. Reverse engineering the applied forces, an arched spanning member was constructed.

ILLUSTRATIONS OF JOINERIES

A MS SHEET CAN GRAB THE MS ROD BY WRAPPING AROUND IT. ILLUSTRATIONS ABOVE SHOW TWO POSSIBLE WAYS OF DOING SO.

PLACING THE TWO MS SHEETS ONE ABOVE THE OTHER, THEY CAN BE RIVETED IN POSITION.

A TRIMMED ROD WHEN THREADED, ACTS LIKE A BOLT. SO, IT CAN BE SCREWED DIRECTLY INTO THE WOOD.

FLATTENING ANY END OF THE MS PIPE, IT CAN BE SCREWED TO A WOODEN BLOCK.

WOOD CAN BE JOINED WITH MS SHEET EITHER BY USING A SCREW OR BY PASSING A MS SHEET THROUGH A SLIT IN THE WOOD.

WOODEN BLOCKS WERE INTERLOCKED BY CARVING POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES ON CONSECUTIVE BLOCKS.
