What role does urbanism still play in today’s rapid, massive urbanization? It seems very few people question this endless, non-context, non-identity urban environment which is driven by limited political, economical, technical and ecological constrains. Thus some people claim that Urbanism has already lost its position to politicians, to economists, to ecologists, to traffic planners and to architects-- people who are doing urbanism but not necessary have any clue about Urbanism. When our urban environment faces challenges of complex, pressing global issues and we are overloaded with endless flow of information, fear, rules, and when urbanism does not sufficiently respond to the gap between our social needs and resources, it could be easily neglected. But Isn’t urbanism the profession that can create space for better collective goals and is the only one that can spatially visualize and realize it? It is Urbanism that has potential to deal with these sociological, economical, ecological issues and provide spatial solutions with the spirit of time. We should use Urbanism as action, as device, as tool, as operation to analyze, define, intensify, diversify, organize, adjust, repair what is needed and to generate clear spatial solutions. We should define an Agenda based on local and global urgencies and use Urbanism to formulate strategies to specific questions. And finally Urbanism can be sexy.

Design Architect | Concept design, modeling, skin development, BIM and technical drawing, consultant coordination The new Vanke development and headquarters establishes a modern, cosmopolitan city center at the heart of the Shenzhen Bay Headquarters Base. Moving beyond older models for business districts that alienate the human scale and employ strict separation between urban and commercial space, the new center is designed for an active, human-scale urban environment with porous connections to the city, central park, and waterfront. Our scheme splits the conventional city block into four separate tower shards, accommodating program along the perimeter of the site to create a light-filled “urban room” at the core. This strategy gives each different building type a unique form and identity responding to the different surrounding conditions of the city, park, and waterfront. The slimmer building volumes offer more premium commercial spaces with flexible floor plates and enhanced sunlight and views.

JAMSIL STADIUM RENNOVATON Re-imagining the Legacy to City of Seoul Professional
_
NBBJ Design
Design Architect | Concept design, modeling, skin development, BIM and technical drawing, consultant coordination Jamsil Olympic Stadium is a powerful and timeless symbol of those Olympics, and of Korea’s emergence as a leading modern economy. It is a widely respected landmark of Korean architectural design, and is deeply cherished by all Koreans. But over thirty years have passed since the Olympics, and Jamsil Stadium today lacks many of the features and experiences found in contemporary world class stadia. For Jamsil to once again host major international sporting events, a significant upgrade to both its athlete facilities and fan experience is needed. The concept for the renovation is rooted in the idea of “Jamsil Resonance” – how the stadium, through its timeless design, its rich history, and unique experience, resonates across the site, into Korean culture, and outward to the world. The approach has been to carefully preserve the legacy and design features of the original stadium, while modernizing the overall image, fan, and athlete experience to modern standards. The stadium will also connect more powerfully to the surrounding landscape, and operational efficiency will be improved, to enable Jamsil Stadium to once again host world class events, and represent Korea on the world stage. Upon completion, Jamsil Stadium will be one of the leading stadiums in the world for international athletics, and will position Seoul well for a future Olympic bid. But unlike any other stadium of its size, Jamsil will also be a part of the everyday Seoul City Life – a place where anyone can go to spend time, walk the concourses, have dinner, and experience what it must have felt like in 1988.

Project Designer | Concept design, modeling, skin development, and drawing
The concept for the new Qianhai Bay Urban Center master planned by James Corner of Field Operations is the “Water City”. Its framework establishes five “Water Fingers” which serve as both development amenities and storm water mechanisms addressing sustainability and resiliency in its relationship to the Qianhai Bay. In addition to its specific response to the Shenzhen region the Expo/ Convention Center development builds on this master plan theme of the “Water City” in the creation of an iconic architectural structure and its surrounding site which are inspired by the dynamic attributes of the ocean and aquatic life. At the tip of Qianhai Bay at the west end of this diverse city sits the site at the end of Dachanwan. Given this special urban and cultural condition a new civic center in this development must be a building that can maximize connectivity, synergy and diverse experiences – mirroring the character of Shenzhen. This new civic center is created by folding a series of city blocks in on themselves to achieve this intensity of interaction, changeability and human experience; like a city within a city or like a Bay within a Bay.

Part of the power of this new Civic Center is that its iconicity is derived largely from the idea of creating a powerful and unique spatial experience that captures the City within a City concept. The building arcs, lifts and curves around the site to form dynamic and beautiful plazas and courtyards intensifying this goal of maximum synergy and connectivity. The result of these folding and arcing spaces is a waving skyline that talk to the Tencent City and signal to the city and the world that something dramatic is happening here – that this is the center of something powerful happening in this new city.

Creating a new civic center in Shenzhen at Dachanwan offers the opportunity to reflect the exciting and unique diversity of Shenzhen and the powerful surrounding ocean currents. The idea of creating a city within the city captures the spirit of Shenzhen at the human scale while the inspiration of the ocean currents inspire a more global scaled form for the building that reflects the flows of water in the flows of people, cultures and ideas. From these conceptual intersections emerges an iconic architecture that the people of Shenzhen can relate to and hold up as an icon of their spirit and place.

There are 4 key program elements in this expo center; exhibition hall, multifunction hall, banquet hall, and hotel. The four program functions are strategically placed within the one circular mass to unify it as one iconic piece and emphasize the synergies of this dramatic sense of proximity. Instead of locating the program in traditional linear fashion they are arrayed in a circular layout that allows the main concourse that continuously faces the inner courtyard to energize the space and maximize the visual connectivity which is highly valuable in an expo/convention facility. The Exhibition hall sits on the east wing on grade and has its loading on the east façade while the concourse faces the inner courtyard. A second level link to the surrounding berms provides cover for the loading down below while also forming a cafe experience opening out to the lush landscape on the east. Temporary exhibitor office and facility head office are on the upper level of the exhibition hall that opens up to the roof garden.

Inspired by ancient and cleansing waters flowing past smooth stones and ancient forest from Beigao Mountain to the West Lake. The expo as stones in the urban stream symbolize the flow of fresh ideas and brilliant innovation that will ensure that Hangzhou is a pioneer and trendsetter on the global stage. Symbolic form is scaled to both create a one of a kind global icon viewed by every visitor arriving by air and a city brand-defining human experience from the ground. The expo is designed around the next generation of user experience. Today’s convention and exhibition centers are planned in accordance with the traditional model that has been used for decades, and they are all “set in stone” practices. The plan corresponds to the subway station, the flow line and the surrounding environment, designing a “emission linear” layout. It not only solves the pain points of the traditional fishbone and array type, but also does not cause new operational problems. It is a breakthrough and upgrade to the traditional fishbone layout.

Connecting vivo AI to place is central to the vision project. The site and the surrounding city provide unique opportunities to make this connection; the important cultural history and current urban vibrancy of Hangzhou, the stunning natural beauty of the hills, West Lake and tea estates, and the dynamic hub of technology innovation and development all provide rich inspiration and connection points for the project. This project is inspired by the innovative vivo business model for AI that creates a range of AI Scenes from intelligent Data and Services. For this vivo AI HQ we are creating a series of Scenes as the inspiration for this project; forming a journey from the cities threshold to the individual workplace. 加强

Role: regional analysis, skin study and modeling, drawings, diagramming, presentation package The new Vanke development and headquarters establishes a modern, cosmopolitan city center at the heart of the Shenzhen Bay Headquarters Base.

Role: regional analysis, visualization, drawings, diagramming The China Telling Communications Complex expresses the 21st century paradigm of integration, knitting green space to workspace and the city to the sky. The integrated towers and plinth elegantly merge premium office headquarters with distinctive retail opportunities for up-and-coming brands, supported by a distributed network of amenities, social spaces, gardens, open-air lounges, and flex areas. An engaging, active urban presence is created through sunken plazas, street level shopping and dining, and multi-level connections to the elevated park. Green roofs, bio-swales, and permeable hard-scape sculpt attractive outdoor areas throughout the site while working to manage drainage and water retention in support of Shenzhen’s Sponge City initiative. The towers’ dynamic façade abstracts the universal visual symbol of communications infrastructure—the spooled conduit of cabling and fiber optics—into a high-performance building envelope and compelling icon for Telling as a global leader in telecommunications.

Power, Mangroves, & Shrimp: A Sustainable Future Professional
_
Morphosis Architects
Role: regional strategy, power plant programming, layout, massing design, visualization, drawings, diagramming, presentation package Over the course of the 20th century, we have seen a 65% loss in global wetlands and a 35% decrease in the world’s mangrove forests. Although these rates are slowing due to concerted efforts to reduce urban development, the revitalization of the wetland biotope is instrumental to this proposal. This project aims to foster cooperative relationships between sustainable mangrove ecologies, resultant opportunities in the local farming economy, and nationalized energy and water infrastructure. These interlaced systems will supplant insufficient policy-based strategies currently in place for local wetland protection and economic growth. The current site will be converted to a brackish coastal wetland expanding the local wetland biotope. Within this reclaimed habitat, strategically planted halophytes, along with the dense root systems of new mangroves will expand to naturally define the site and prevent sediment runoff. Mandated intelligent and sustainable farming practices will bolster local mangrove forest health avoiding the replication of unregulated South-East Asian farming practices. This organic growth will build consistent ecological resilience while maintaining fiscal returns for on-site shrimp farms.

The project emphasizes on the possibilities and implications of re-purposing nature to produce ‘spectacular’ and educational tourist experiences centered around health and ecology, integrated with the pragmatic demands of a man-made island ecosystem. We celebrate the island’s man-made qualities by revealing the ‘true nature’ of it, creating environments, places, parks and building suitable for the man-made. The research responds to emerging cultural, political, and technical issues linked with the growing archipelagos of manmade tourist islands backed by the Chinese government in the South China Sea.

Role: conceptual design, modeling, diagramming, visualization Distribution problems regarding spoilage and costs continue to increase when farms are further away from the metropolis. Folding the farm back into the city to alleviate this issue is proposed through the scheme. Using the rapidly growing developments in Downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District as a catalyst to form a new way of looking at Arts Districts and strengthens the relationship between agriculture and industrial environments.

Device_ Airpocalypse For A Lovely Deep Breath
Academic _ Independent work
Chongqing used to be a city with rich attractive outdoor space due to its unique geological formation and quay culture. Unfortunately, with increasing SOMG pollution across the country, local people suffer from losing outdoor space and forced to confine themselves with their air cleaning machines. The concept is to create a device that constantly purifies air and provides clean air to the public so that people have opportunity to go back to normal life again.

GAME
Light-weight Structure
- PLAY with Friends Conceptually we created a floating playground where you will not be alone. The Game encourages you to get help from friends even strangers and work together. - Tug o’ Tree house For the two-person size tree house it requires three to four people’s strength in order to pull down and get in. Which means you need to give a little love to teamwork.
FLOATING
- Levitate in the Air The tree house lifts itself up from the garden to create an open connection from the bridge to multiple scenery spots along the Thames River and also to create an unique meditation space among shadows from leaves and trees - Dream in Cloud The floating tree house provides unique space where the concept of gravity if forgotten where you overlooking at the great view from a perspective nobody has ever dreamed about.
120
MOBILE
- Floating System The floating system contains two elements: the Helium inflated structure and the Helium airbag. The major levitating force was taken by Helium inside. - Minimum Impact to Trees Instead of standing on a tree or hanging down from a branch, the Helium airbag enables the tree house to leave least amount of impact on trees.
Paper-fiber reinforced plastic was used as major material due to its lightness transparency. The hallow structure was inflated with Helium which makes itself lighter. The flexibility of fiber reinforced plastic enables the possibility of fluid spatial experience.
Stabilizing System The tree house was hold by four strings in order to keep it level. Vertically, the tree house requires one string attached to the pre- installed anchor to prevent it from flying away. Other three strings were used to keep the tree house level.
Helium on Noise Control Helium inflated airbags also provide great noise buffer for inside.
Helium on Thermal Performance Helium inflated bags act as insulation for the structure. The air space contains inside is highly efficient on thermal performance.
Re-used Materials Paper-fiber reinforced plastic doesn’t share lots of environmental concerns that normal FRP have. The paper fiber is easier to be extracted from the matrix and the bio-plastic has much better disposal property.
Low Maintenance The tree house requires minimum of maintenance.

Development Logic
Opening discussions that surrounded the design approach for the space, initiated with a conversation about canopies as a form of protection as well as the special relationships from the perspective how one emerges. It was this theatrical synergy created during this activity that inspired our team to design a space with a visual movement. Therefore, we created a populous from the paper motif with a system of connections that merged together various sizes randomly stretching like a sculptural collage to form a canopy above the audience.

InstrumentFrom Old French instrument, from Latin īnstrūmentum “an implement, tool”. It is a language in which architecture is an instrument, as complex or as simple as the case requires. It brings us back to “design performance,” from which I want to draw a final implication. Various types of paper foldings were created and assembled with four arrangement logics. The assembled systems were then tested for its span ability and adaptive strength. Then the final prototype was selected.
