I ALWAYS WANTED to go to a sleepaway summer camp, but there weren’t any in the area where I grew up. Lucky for my kids, that’s not the case here. Yakima-area kids and parents have lots of options for overnight camps, from three-night mini camps for first-time campers to weeklong horseback excursions. (See page 8.) For closer-to-home adventures, this area has a growing number of day camps that allow kids to hone their sports skills, sing Broadway musicals, learn to tap dance or decorate cakes. (See page 13.) Like Us: facebook.com/yakimabusybee.com You could also fill their summer Friend Me: facebook.com/yakima.mama calendar with free or low-cost vacation Bible school programs offered by local churches. It takes a lot of hours to put together these wonderful programs for our children. They’re some very lucky kids. We’ve filled this issue with as many summer camps and May/June activities as we could find, but I’m sure we’ve missed a few. As always, I will post other events as I hear about them at yakimabusybee.com and on Busybee’s Facebook page. Be sure to “like” and “subscribe” to our page so you don’t miss out.

See you at camp!

Pool Rules: Safety First! Summer break is just around the corner for schoolaged children and that means warmer weather and plenty of opportunities to spend time in and around the water. Keep these tips in mind to ensure your little ones are in a safe, fun environment. All children—even if they know how to swim—need constant supervision around the water. Infants, toddlers and weak swimmers should have an adult who can swim within arm’s reach.

HEALTH

Buzz

Swimming Pools & Spas • Teach young children not to play around pools or spas when an adult is not present. • Always watch children when they are in or near water. Don’t be distracted by phone calls or text messages. • Install a fence that is at least four feet high around all sides of the pool or spa. The fence should have a locking gate that closes and latches by itself. • Cover and lock pools when not using them.

ESTHER HUNTE, MD, is a family practice physician at Family Medicine of Yakima.

• Remove or lock up ladders to above ground pools and spas. Boating & open bodies of water • Wear life jackets that fit when riding in a boat. Children 12 years and under must wear a life jacket that fits them on moving boats less than 19 feet in length in Washington. • Use plenty of sunscreen to avoid sunburns. • Be aware that swimming in a lake or river is much harder than swimming in a pool. While it may appear calm and the water temperature may seem warm on the surface, the current can be strong and the water temperature much colder below. • Take life jackets, a rescue device, a cell phone, and someone who knows CPR when you are out on the water. • Exercise caution around irrigation canals. Children should not play near them as it is too easy for them to slip in and is difficult for them to climb out. A few precautions will ensure everyone has fun in the sun and can beat the heat safely this summer season. ■

This Trail

Rocks

After just minutes walking on the Cowiche Canyon Trail, we’d already spotted a snake and a tree gnawed by a beaver. The kids scrambled over boulders and tossed stones in the creek. We stopped for lunch, then headed back before anyone started to whine. For a super easy weekend ramble, this trail just a few miles west of Yakima is hard to beat. Flat and wide, the 3-mile trail is built on the bed of an old railroad line. Thick gravel in some places could make biking difficult, but jogging strollers should handle the terrain with ease. Dogs are permitted on a leash, and it’s not uncommon to pass riders on horseback. Rattlesnake sightings are also common, so keep a watchful eye and have kids stay on the trail. There’s no water or restrooms along the trail, so plan ahead. We like to pack a snack and stop for a bit before turning back to the car. The trail crosses nine bridges over Cowiche Creek as it winds its way through the basalt and andesite canyon. Look for interesting rock features, like the face in the center picture above. Rocks aside, the topography is primarily grasslands and shrubs. There are wildflowers in the spring and fall foliage in autumn. Mid-summer weather can be particularly brutal, so don’t wait to plan your first visit. — Sara Bristol Getting there:

There are parking lots at each end of the main trail, which connects with the Uplands Trail and the Winery Trail to Wilridge Vineyard. East Trailhead: Driving west on Powerhouse Road from 40th Avenue (behind Fred Meyer’s), take the second left onto Cowiche Canyon Road. Go 2.2 miles (about 1 mile on gravel) to the trailhead at the end of the road.

Weikel Trailhead: From Yakima, drive west on Summitview Avenue to Weikel Road (about 5 miles west of 72nd Avenue). Turn right onto Weikel Road, then turn right into the parking area at the bottom of the hill.

THREE MORE EASY TREKS Yakima Greenway — This 10-mile paved walking and biking path offers lots to explore, including several small lakes and a large wooden playground. There are multiple access points, but two of the simplest are Yakima’s Sarg Hubbard Park and the north end of 16th Avenue at Hwy 12. For more, visit yakimagreenway.org. Boulder Cave — Bring flashlights to explore this moderate 2-mile loop that passes through a 350-foot lava tunnel. Accessible by jogging strollers; may need to lift it over a couple tight spots. Located on SR410 about 32 miles west of Naches, there’s a sign pointing to the cave and day use area. Northwest Forest Pass or $5 daily parking fee. Red Top Lookout — It’s less than a mile hike to the fire lookout, but this trail is a puffer, climbing 350 feet to the top. From I-90, take Exit 106 west of Ellensburg and follow US Hwy 97 north toward Leavenworth/Wenatchee. Just past the Mineral Springs Campground, turn left onto FR 9738. In 2.6 miles, go left on FR 9702. Drive 4.5 miles to the trailhead. 4WD isn’t necessary, but a vehicle with high clearance is recommended. Northwest Forest Pass required.

Meet The Very Hungry Caterpillar Saturday, June 8 at 11 am Inklings Bookshop

A pick to engage reluctant readers by heather vantassell | readingforsanity.blogspot.com Twelve-year-old twins Abigail and John are forced to relocate when their inventor father, Professor Elton Templeton, accepts employment at the Tickeridge-Baltock Institute of Technology. Upon arrival on the Tick-Tock Tech campus Dean D. Dean publicly BOOK REVIEW confronts Professor The Templeton Twins Have an Idea Templeton and accuses By Ellis Weiner. Illustrated by Jeremy Holmes. Recommended for Grades 3-5. him of stealing the idea for the personal oneman helicopter. When Professor Templeton refuses to share credit with Dean, the desperate man enlists the help of his own twin, Dan D. Dean, to kidnap the Templeton twins and their high-strung dog. Abigail and John are forced to rely upon fantastical use of their hobbies as well as their “ridiculous” dog to get out of this precarious situation. A cross between mystery and science fiction, the purposeful, progressive plot of The Templeton Twins Have an Idea is engaging and fast-paced. The conflict between the Dean twins and the Templeton twins quickly escalates, while obvious foreshadowing allows the reader to puzzle out the resolution. The witty narrator, who never officially defines himself or his relationship to the twins, appears frequently to break up the storyline. The narrator engages the reader on a personal level through hyperbole plays with idioms, metaphors and clichés as well as sarcastic review questions concluding each chapter.

Full-page detailed illustrations in mysterious shades of blue and black are presented in a comical format that meshes well with the humorous plotline. Gears and gadgets decorate most of the pages. Additional charts, maps and diagrams are interspersed throughout and play an integral role within the story. Variations in fonts and page layouts add yet an additional layer of playfulness. The ending is delightfully predictable and allows the tale to come to a full resolution. The book is so much fun that readers will yearn to know what happens next in the interesting lives of the Templeton twins. Abigail’s smart and witty character will charm girls while the use of inventive gadgets and sarcastic humor will appeal to boys. With sequential titles in the makings, this clever, engaging tale is perfect for the reluctant reader. ■
