Bridesmaid Advice| By Jamie Lee Stickel
Wedding season is officially here, and I can’t help but be a little excited. Weddings bring so much promise and hope, I can hardly contain myself. Certainly, with all of those weddings, all of those brides, there will be a need for a very important wedding accessory—a bridesmaid. That’s where I come in. As a seasoned bridesmaid (six weddings, thank you, two of those as maid of honor, and I loved all six dresses), I’ve pretty much seen and heard it all: bachelorette party catfights, drunk and disorderly groomsmen, even a dog in a tutu. As I looked back at all of the fun I’ve had attending these weddings, I began to create a mental checklist for bridesmaids to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible on their friends’ big days. There are certain tools that every good bridesmaid must have to guarantee wedding-day success. An obvious first: safety pins. You will need at least 10 of them. I’ve been at two weddings where safety pins have been used: one in which the dress the mother of the groom was wearing split down the front seam. Luckily, she had a really pretty bow on the back of the dress that was snipped off with a handy pair of scissors (number two on the list), and in just over two minutes, that bow had been transformed into a flower that we pinned to the split. Crisis averted. Next you’ll need a flask. No. Not for you. Put down the flask. It’s for the bride,

the bridesmaid’s emergency kit: top five essentials Jamie Lee and friend Amanda Schmidt
when she gets nervous. It’s for the mother of the bride, when she gets hysterical. Obvious side note: it is always a bad idea to make a joke to the mother of the bride, especially if it is within one hour of the wedding ceremony. I tried this once. I asked the bride’s mother to move out of “my area,” where I was applying the bride’s makeup. Tears ensued. A hug, a nip from the flask, and some tissues later, and we were back on track. The tissues are your fourth essential, plus, if you hide them in your bra it may give you the extra lift you need.
Every bridesmaid’s final necessity is a good speech—especially if you are the Maid of Honor (if you’re well versed in bridal lingo, that’s MOH). As I said before, I have had the privilege of being the MOH in two weddings. But it wasn’t always a given. For my best friend’s wedding, I had to work very hard for the MOH position. You never know when a bride will feel obligated to fill that coveted spot with a pesky cousin from California or an old grade school friend, “because they promised” when they were younger. I campaigned relentlessly. I gave speeches at inappropriate times to prove my ability. And finally, it paid off. Now when it comes to the speech, you must decide between funny or sappy, and never be “married” to what you decide. At the last wedding I was in, I fought with the Best Man over who would be funny and who would be sappy. Surprisingly, he wanted to be the sap. So last minute, I changed my fairy tale speech to something a little closer to, well, let’s just say it was memorable. At the end of the night, remember that you put all that hard work in for the bride’s big moment, and then the reception can be all about you, well, and maybe that cute groomsman in the corner. Y

flowers that make a statement
Melia’s Floral has been a part of the Yakima community for just four short years, and there is no doubt that owner, Melia Younker, is enthusiastic about her work. She is making a name for herself among area brides and grooms through her artistic design style. YAKIMA BRIDE: What inspired you to become a florist
and start your own business? Melia: After focusing all my attention on athletics and academics during my college years, I realized I needed a creative outlet. I come from a long line of creative women and realized I was happiest when creating beauty for people through flowers. I fell in love. YB:What is the most common request you get from
brides? M: I would say the most common request would be an all rose bouquet. If you choose a fun rose, they turn out pretty incredible. YB:What do you love about being a florist? M: I love
walking into a blank room and transforming it into a state of awe.

YB: Do you have a favorite event that you designed? M: I don’t think there is one particular event I can
choose, but looking back through the years I’ve really enjoyed the change in design, style and colors. Fall • Winter 2010

YB:What is one thing you think brides and
grooms should splurge on? What could they save on if they had a smaller budget? M: I would recommend spending the most money on the bride’s bouquet; it will be in almost every picture of your wedding. On the other hand, if couples need to cut back, I would suggest going with simple centerpieces. A few floating flowers and rented vases...can be just as beautiful. Also, using in-season flowers can save you a good amount. YB:What should a bride know/ask when
meeting with a florist? M: Knowing your colors is the biggest thing. Also, if there are particular flowers you love, be sure to let the florist know, so they can find a way to incorporate them. Having an idea about your budget will help a lot as well; florists can work with you and help you stay on track when ordering.
YB: Do you consider yourself an artist?
YB: Anything else we should know
Do you bring in other aspects of art into your work? M: I do. All floral designers are artists. I took some art classes throughout high school and college and feel like I bring that background into many parts of my design process.
about you? M: I’ve started to grow my own flowers, and in the future, will hopefully be able to provide brides with some fun alternatives that would be more cost-effective.
YB:What are some arrangements that
YB: Any flower trends right now? Color
aren’t requested often, but you think look great for a wedding? M: I love tropical flowers and don’t (see) them requested in this area as often. Boy, do they make a statement though.
trends? M: I’ve noticed that many brides are going for a more vintage look this year. I love it! YB:What’s your favorite personal style for
flowers? M: I love colorful, bold looks with a lot of different texture.

A long, long time ago, getting married was a serious affair. The groom wore black; the bride wore white, and pictures reflected the “happy” couple in unsmiling, uncomfortable poses. Thank goodness someone figured out that weddings are joyous occasions… the prime time to celebrate love, new beginnings, and endless possibilities. Today, while most brides still wear some form of white, it might not be a dress. Now, more than ever, brides and grooms are personalizing the big day, creating true one-of-a-kind events that reflect their individual personalities, as well as their new wedded-ness.

A dizzying array of creative personalization is now possible, even for those working on tight budgets. “You just need to find some little way to really make the day yours,” says Genipher Messer, a Yakima bride of seven years who has planned numerous weddings for friends and relatives. “Even something as simple as making sachets of wildflower seeds for your guests to plant at their homes can create a special impression that will last forever.” Unique invitations are another way to personalize the big day. advance of the wedding day, especially if guests will need to reserve lodging. These “pre-invitations” might consist of a photo of the couple that has been transformed into a postcard, or even a refrigerator magnet. The actual invitation, which is typically sent out six to eight weeks before the ceremony, is the perfect way to announce the theme of the big day. For traditional, formal weddings, invitations are typically done in an elegant script on a light

colored card stock. For the couple getting married at a mountain retreat, the invitations might look more rustic, perhaps even with some imagery of pine trees or mountain vistas. Crystal Weathermon, a Yakima fiancée planning for her wedding, came up with the adorable idea of sending out “message in a bottle” invitations, using tiny glass bottles filled with sand, shells, and a scroll announcing the wedding.

create your own signature drink Customized cocktails are quite the thing at many events these days, especially weddings. Not only are they perfect for the theme-loving bride, but they give options to the guests who wish to get away from the usual beer and wine. And let’s be honest, that’s quite a treat. Another plus: this trendy alternative to an open bar helps keep the liquor tab under control . . . making dad very happy. When choosing your signature sip for the night, pick something that uses your favorite liquor (the fewer ingredients the better), matches your color scheme, or just sounds like a delicious way to add a bit of oh-la-la to the bar menu. The last piece of the puzzle is naming the drink, and the sky’s the limit there. To make it truly custom, try incorporating your names, adding a theme from a favorite hobby the two of you share or use it as a play off your honeymoon plans. Whatever it is, keep it about the two of you and you can’t go wrong. Yakima Bride has collected seven colorful recipes that are sure to keep your guests smiling throughout the night. BLUE: Blueberry Martini • 2 oz. Blueberry Martini Mixer • 1 oz. vodka Combine, with ice, into a cocktail shaker. Shake and strain. WHITE: White Cosmopolitan • 1 ½ oz. vodka • ½ Cointreau • ¼ oz. white cranberry juice • Garnish with a lime. Combine ingredients, with ice, into a cocktail shaker. Shake, strain and garnish with a lime wheel.

Crystal & David 6.27.10
Crystal Weathermon and David Olden share a moment while walking on the beach at Westport, Washington. When asked to share their favorite moment, they said, “Running through the ocean afterwards as the fog was rolling in.” Crystal and David were married on the beach, under a gazebo surrounded by family and friends. Following a trip to Yellowstone National Park, the couple will be home in Yakima.
