Yakima Valley Bride has made some big changes!
Dear brides (and grooms!) to be,
Kimberly & Scott Klepach
Robin & Ryan Beckett
Share your story… We’re always looking for ideas for future editions, so if you’d like to send the story of your wedding, please do! Just email sklepach@yakimaherald.com, and your fantastic day might be the next one we feature.
Planning a wedding is such a fun time in a couple’s life together — when else do you get to plan a huge party that’s all about you? Whether that party is big or small, on a lavish budget or budgetconscious, a wedding should be fun, comfortable, and most of all — you. And you’ve come to the right place. As always, inside these pages you’ll find gorgeous professional photography of local couples and local weddings. Each special feature includes the couple’s story, plus information on their team of resources, and memorable moments on their special day. Let’s not forget about the all-important wedding night too — we’ve included a special feature on three local B&Bs that make great places to spend the evening, especially if you’re waiting to jet out on your honeymoon. Details are always important, and couples everywhere want to put their own personal stamp on their big day. To help you along, we’ve compiled a list of 25 ways to make your wedding unique. From officiants to centerpieces, get inspired to make a splash with something unusual and surprising. Don’t miss our Bride Baubles feature, too. There are some fun ideas for attendant gifts, gifts for mom or mom-in-law-to-be, or gifts for you that are available locally. Also, make sure to look at our comprehensive list of ceremony and reception sites, starting on page 50, which lists all the information you need when starting your quest for location. There’s also an ad index on pages 60-61 that contains more resources for your planning. In addition to this magazine, check out or revamped website at yakimabride.com — there’s more information on that valuable resource inside these pages too. We’re always looking for ideas for future editions, so if you’d like to send the story of your wedding, please do! Just e-mail sklepach@yakimaherald.com, and your fantastic day might be the next one we feature. Cheers and best wishes, Scott & Robin Yakima Valley Bride staff

C h-ch-ch-changes… resources for your big day | Yakima Valley Bride Staff
Weddings signal big changes for the bride and groom, as they evolve into a family unit. We at Yakima Valley Bride magazine have evolved too — expanding our bridal resources, so that couples planning their big step have access to the best information out there. Our January print edition was our first glossy magazine, and with that edition, we revamped our website at YakimaBride.com. Now with a fresh look, the website offers brides, grooms and family members an easier way to find wedding-planning resources, including a searchable database
of every type of vendor. This means you no longer have to click on each category to find a particular venue or business. Instead, you can conduct a keyword search to quickly and easily find results. Plus our extensive ceremony and reception venue guide is now searchable too. This guide includes all the details — like price, capacity and special features — that you need to make sure your wedding venue is just right. We’ve also added some fun features, too, including videos of real brides and local industry insiders who offer their advice to couples embarking on their wedding planning journey.

OCCUPATIONS She’s a sixth grade teacher at Union Gap School, and he’s a sergeant with the Yakima County Sheriff ’s office. m THEIR WEDDING WAS unusual m NUMBER OF GUESTS 115 m NUMBER OF ATTENDANTS 8 m THEME was vintage carnival m COLORS were warm, autumn colors: brown, merlot, sage, rust and charcoal m ON THE MENU Buttery popcorn popped on site, salted peanuts in the shell and a candy buffet that guests could use to fill take-out boxes. Dinner was pulled pork sandwiches or bratwurst with fiesta corn, green salad and baby red potatoes. m THEY GOTAWAY Names in a red 1973 Camaro m AFTER THE RECEPTION THEY ate a late dinner at Shari’s, Kasey Berger then headed home. m THEY HONEYMOONED at Whistlin’ Jack Lodge then to Maui Joel Clifford during the winter. m FAVORITE MOMENT The bride’s father had convinced close they live in Yakima friends to play a trick on the couple: While walking his daughter down the aisle he shouted, “Wait! Hang on.” Then he proceeded to collect bundles of cash from various guests, finally giving the cash to the groom at the alter. It was “funny, spontaneous and fits our families’ personalities.”

As extravagant as you dare to dream!
Yakima’s Kasey and Joel Clifford met when their career paths crossed: Kasey worked at the Yakima County Clerk’s office and Joel at the Yakima County courthouse. Joel eventually popped the question while the couple popped popcorn. After watching their favorite band, Hand Full of Lovin’, perform at the Sports Center, they went back to a hotel room that they had won at a Yakima Bears game. They “popped popcorn, watched local T.V. and then…. in his finest P.J. pants,” Joel asked for Kasey’s hand in marriage. Popcorn also played a part in this fun couple’s carnival themed wedding.

Ashley Macias, who’s a triplet, met her husband Shane through one of her brothers, Kelly. Despite Ashley and Shane’s obvious attraction to each other, Kelly didn’t officially introduce them for months. But finally her brother relented, and the trio spent a day together. “From that moment on, Shane and I were inseparable,” Ashley said. Their romantic event started with a ceremony at Sawyer House, lit with fireplaces, paper lanterns and strewn with red flower petals, and ended with a limousine ride to Rosedell Bed and Breakfast in Yakima, where the couple spent the night in the Master Room.

Teepees at Cherry Wood Bed, Breakfast & Barn. Photo by Gordon King.
With the hustle and bustle of getting everything ready for a fantastic wedding, it can be difficult to think ahead to when the ceremony and reception are over and the honeymoon begins. Once many couples relax, they are hit with the reality of how much energy it took to make it through the big day. While many plan on leaving town or leaving the mainland for a honeymoon, sometimes plans for a post-wedding vacation are on hold — at least for a while — and it’s nice to have a quiet, relaxing getaway without the hassle of itineraries and travel. Bed and breakfasts have become a popular option for newlyweds. Sure, B&Bs are available for a one-night transition to that faraway honeymoon, but they can also serve as the perfect honeymoon retreat all on their own.

Valley Bride
photography BY Amber Miller
In October 2006, Lindsay Hughes was just 17 and diagnosed with a rare type of intestinal cancer. “It wasn’t certain I would make it to my high school graduation. Or college. Or my own wedding,” she said. “But I did it all.” Lindsay said the wedding was everything she could have asked for. And as for the groom? “I’m sure it’s tough to be the husband of a cancer patient, but he says he couldn’t imagine life any other way.”

• Nail down ceremony structure and requirements with your officiant. • Register for gifts. • Interview photographers and videographers, florists and musicians. You don’t need to make specific plans yet, but you should review their work and make sure it suits your style. Then make a deposit to save the date. Adjust your budget after getting estimates if needed. • Interview caterers and bakers (as in, schedule some tastings!); book one. • Finalize the guest list (after checking with both sets of parents). • If you’re having a destination wedding, order your save-the-dates so they’ll be ready to send 6 to 8 months before the wedding.

months
• Envision your wedding style and color scheme. Make an inspiration board from your favorite magazines — especially this one! • Get organized! Start a file or binder for all the wedding-related paperwork, ideas, business cards and brochures. Use our checklist (it’s online too!) to stay on top of all of your to-dos. • Work out your budget and discuss who’s going to pay for what. • Interview planners and hire, if needed. • Decide on your wedding size and discuss the guest list with your fiancé and families. Remember the best way to cut cost is reduce your guest list. • Choose your wedding party, including bridesmaids, groomsmen, ushers and honored roles. • Pick a wedding date and time. Finalize it after checking with key guests (parents, bridal party…), potential venues and officiants. • Reserve the officiant, ceremony and reception sites. <p. 50> • Schedule a formal engagement photo sitting. • Begin researching photographers, florists, caterers, bakers and bands/DJs. • Start looking at dresses in magazines and on websites. • Have an engagement party. Set a date, draft a guest list, pick a venue and order invitations.
months
• Reserve tables, chairs and any other rental equipment. • Find and hire a lighting specialist (if you’re using one.) • Narrow your dress choices, pick one and place your order. • Choose the bridesmaid dresses and make sure your girls order them. • Reserve a hotel block near the reception site for out-of-town guests. • Interview bakers and book one. • Create a wedding website. Include info about your wedding, surrounding events and registry. • Order your save-the-dates so they’ll be ready to send at least four months before the wedding. TIP: Order your invites at the same time and cross one more item of your to-do list. • Plan and finalize the reception menu and how it will be served (sit-down, buffet, appetizers) with your caterer. • Discuss honeymoon destinations. If you’re going abroad make sure your passport is current as well as any visas or vaccinations that may be required for exotic locations. • Finalize flower ideas with florist. • Book ceremony musicians; start working with a song list. • Consider purchasing wedding insurance. • Submit your engagement announcement to newspapers.
6
months
• Send out save-the-dates. Order invites (if you haven’t already). • Grooms: Decide what you and your groomsmen will wear and give them all the ordering info. If you’re renting a tux, get measured for it. Also buy shoes, stays, cuff links, a pocket square and any other accessories. • Order the wedding rings; send them out to be engraved if you’d like. • Make sure the rehearsal dinner site is booked and give the host a guest list. Book venues for any other gatherings, such as a day-after brunch. • Book a hotel for your wedding night. • Choose your wedding cake design and flavors (not without tasting them all first, of course!). • Think about your ceremony décor like extra flowers or an aisle runner.

Many couples are discovering there’s not just one “right” way to get married, and that in turn means there really is decidedly no wrong way, either. The same goes for choosing a wedding officiant. While many couples select a religious leader, there are other options for choosing someone to lead you through the wedding ceremony. Some couples might opt for an alternative spiritual leader, such as a druid or new age leader. Others may avoid this structure and look to the courts to make the relationship official. Some prefer to have someone in the family or a close friend perform the ceremony, and there are inexpensive ways to receive credentials online. More and more couples are cutting lose from the traditional white dress/three tier cake/ champagne toast, adding a touch of whimsy to their day by incorporating a theme. Intrigued? Us too. Here’s a list of fun ideas: • Alice in Wonderland • ’50s or any other decade • Monochrome (Everybody wears black, white or some other color— even the guests) • Kentucky Derby (Hats please!) • A Royal wedding • …or a Parisian wedding • The Tropics • Mardi Gras • Seaside retreat (striped tents, shells) • …or get married on or near a holiday.
