“The glue that keeps the team together.” The Wolf Pack — Davis’ players in the trenches — is key to the Pirates’ hopes

By SCOTT SPRUILL YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

ith three victories in 2009, Davis equaled its total number of wins in the previous seven seasons. And the Pirates did so with a roster almost entirely comprised of underclassmen. What’s more, the ’09 crew was tantalizingly close to a winning season, which would have been the program’s first since 1998. Davis’ first two games were lost in overtime and four setbacks were by a total of 17 points. So naturally spirits are high in the Pirates’ camp, especially with the return of plenty of offensive playmakers. But what everybody in the CBBN

knows is that linemen make a season. And this season, perhaps more than ever in recent times, the Pirates have an answer for that. Thanks to the Wolf Pack. Seniors Sebastian Hunt (left), Joshua White Elk (center) and Max Oakes (right) and junior David Huitt (second from right) — all of whom will play key roles in the trenches this fall — share Native American decent and they’ve parlayed that into a bond that has grown through the summer. “Coach (Rick) Clark came up with that at (WSU) camp in June and it caught on real quick,” said White Elk, who along with the others recruited senior Jose Perez (second from left) into the Pack’s fold. “This season there is

a lot more bonding through the whole program. You can see the difference.” In between weightlifting sessions three days a week through the summer, Hunt said the linemen met on Tuesdays and Thursdays to practice technique and footwork drills. Hunt is an ideal leader for that effort, having received all-league honors at offensive tackle and defensive end last year. “These kids have put in the work,” Clark praised. “We’ve got some exciting potential on offense, but without these kids we would be hurting. They will keep us together and give a chance to compete.” Compete the Pirates did last year, considering the tight outcome of so many games, but this year the theme

with the Wolf Pack is closing out games. Just a handful of points could turn a 3-7 season into a 7-3 season. “We need to finish the business,” said White Elk, who anchored last year’s linebacking crew with all-league honors and will be sharing time on the line and possibly in the backfield. “Last year we’d fight and fight and fight and come up short. We just need that extra effort.” Being so close to a winning season last year with so much returning, the Pirates are confident something special is on the horizon. “We’re deeper and closer and more focused than last year,” noted Oakes, who expects to play guard and defensive tackle. “That part of it is important and it’s coming together real well.”

“He lets his actions speak.”

Eisenhower all-state lineman Abel Soto doesn’t say much ... and he doesn’t have to By SCOTT SPRUILL YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

year ago, Abel Soto was a junior in a senior’s world on the Eisenhower football team. He went about his business with that hierarchy in mind — quietly, respectfully and with deference to his elders. But against others on Friday night he was an animal. By the end of the Cadets’ historic 11-win season, Soto emerged with full honors at left tackle as a co-offensive lineman of the year in the CBBN’s Cascade Division and a first-team allstate selection.

This year, with many new faces stepping into starting roles, Soto is the senior in charge. He’s just as quiet as ever, mind you, but his message of hard work and focus gets across. “You will never hear a peep out of the kid, but he plays the game really hard and is a great technician,” Ike coach Dan Eyman said. “You only have to show him something once and he will perform it correctly the rest of the season.” The 6-foot-2, 230-pound Soto is one of the precious few returning starters on offense. He and center Matt Briceno, another first-team all-Cascade lineman, are taking up the task of carrying forward last year’s momentum.

“It did feel like we were starting over at (Boise State) camp,” Soto said. “But I feel pretty confident with our offense. We need to do the same things we did last year, like build team chemistry, be positive and work really hard.” Soto’s work ethic is evident the entire school year spanning three sports. After a winter as the post for the JV basketball team, he led the Valley in the discus at 145 feet, 4 inches — nearly a 20-foot improvement over his sophomore best. Despite that athletic versatility, Soto has told coaches he would like to focus solely on offense this season. “I didn’t play defense at all last season, but the coaches did offer me a

spot there for my senior year,” he said. “But I told them I would rather just go one way and focus 100 percent on offense. I want to be at my best for every play.” To that end, Soto’s summer has been filled with grunt work. When the Cadets open Saturday at West Seattle he wants to feel significant progress over his honor-laden junior season. “A lot of running in the morning and weightlifting in the afternoon,” he said of his summer routine. “My strength and stamina are two things I’ve worked hard to improve. To have another good season, we all need that.” Message to teammates: Follow that lead.

SARA GETTYS/Yakima Herald-Republic

“He’s like a coach on the field.” Sunnyside’s Andrew Daley is well-versed in the offense in his third year as quarterback

By ROGER UNDERWOOD YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

o some it’s an innate ability, something they’ve had since birth. Others come to possess it osmotically, absorbing it over time. In Andrew Daley’s case, it was probably some of both. When Sunnyside football coach Mark Marro says, “He’s like having a coach on the field,” he’s alluding to Daley’s gridiron acumen and the ability to channel it competitively. “This is his third year as a starter and he’s really grown into the position,” Marro said. “He had to go into the fire early as a sophomore and took his lumps. But he’s always been a positive

kid; he’s become a role model by going to camp and working hard in the weightroom. He does everything right.” It’s likely that Daley was doing things right, for the most part, long before he became the Grizzlies’ starting quarterback in 2008. Andrew’s father, Bill, was Sunnyside’s coach prior to Marro’s arrival in 2002. Bill Daley is currently the school’s athletic director. So Andrew, who began playing football as a seventh-grader, saw the game up close and personal at an early age. “When I was younger,” he said, “I spent a lot of time on the sidelines watching my dad coach. That’s what made me like football.” And, no doubt, helped Daley develop

something of a coach’s mentality. Part of that mentality is being in charge, which a quarterback obviously is. “I like that the ball has to go through me every time on every play,” he said. “I like that I’m in control.” So does Marro. “We run a double wing (T) with an ace back, and we’re always in four wide,” Marro said, meaning the Grizzlies deploy four wide receivers. “This year gives us an opportunity to do a little more with Andrew. “It takes time and thought to learn what he’s learned — to know what he’s allowed to do and why.” The end result, it is hoped, is victories. And Daley, Marro and others in the Sunnyside camp would like to

translate the quarterback’s coaching mentality into on-field success. “I try to lead by example,” Daley said. “I work hard in the weightroom and at practice, and hope that my teammates will come in and follow what I’m doing. And I try to set goals to push myself and make myself a better player, and also to make the team better.” For Daley, the approach he’s taken to football also figures to serve him well beyond his days on the gridiron. He’s considering attending Washington or Boise State, and perhaps majoring in physical therapy. “Whatever he does in life,” Marro said, “he’ll fit in well. He sees the big picture. The light’s come on for him. He’ll be a success no matter what he does.”

KICKOFF 2010

SARA GETTYS/Yakima Herald-Republic

“He’s ready to make some noise.” Gerrick Andrews and the Rams are looking to bounce back from a rough stretch

By ROGER UNDERWOOD YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

rom a collective and competitive standpoint, West Valley football has been quiet the past few years. As they used to say in the old Western movies — too quiet. This year, however, the Rams have a new coach. They also have a new approach and new optimism. And though their senior ranks are relatively thin, veterans like Gerrick Andrews who have stoically persevered through the rough times might well be poised to make some noise. “I was still teaching at West Valley last year even though I was helping Dan Eyman at Eisenhower,” first-year

coach John Beck said, “and I noticed that when other kids on their team were down in the dumps, Gerrick was still giving it his best shot.” Andrews’ best shot figures to be substantially better this year. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound running back-safety said he’s about 20 pounds heavier and stronger than last season, and the added bulk has come mostly from impressively consistent visits to the weight room. “That was mostly from winter lifting,” Andrews said. “I really do enjoy it. It’s really fun to get to bond with the other guys, and that’s team bonding. It’s helped us build for this year. We’re very excited.” And prepared to turn up the volume,

it seems, on the field. Andrews said West Valley will run the Pistol, a version of the spread offense so effectively deployed last season by Ike. “Our quarterback will be in the shotgun,” he said, “but I’m still behind the quarterback. And we’ll spread the ball around.” Having gotten faster as well as stronger, Andrews figures to keep defenses honest by providing the Rams with a productive ground game. “Last year,” he said, “I ran a 4.66 (40-yard dash) that was hand timed, which is usually slower than when you’re electronically timed. This year we were timed electronically and I ran a 4.6, so I’ve improved quite a bit since last year.”

Said Beck, who coached Andrews on West Valley’s middle school track team, “Gerrick is more active. He’s gone from being a very small kid to being quite a bit bigger and stronger because he’s always in the weightroom.” Andrews said his biggest individual on-field enjoyment comes from running over — rather than around — an opponent. “Just lowering my shoulder and winning that battle, that’s great,” he said. Something all football fans enjoy is the crack of pad against pad in such a collision, so West Valley partisans might expect to hear such sounds. And, in general, much more noise from their Rams.

It’s a new ballgame

(Predicted order of finish)

Class 4A

4A, 3A alignment reshapes conference By SCOTT SPRUILL YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

While the CBBN and its membership remains at 15 schools with an 8-7 division split, the landscape has definitely changed. Gone after two years are the Cascade and Columbia divisions and new are Class 4A and 3A divisions with seven and eight teams, respectively. Eisenhower and Davis will join Wenatchee, Walla Walla, Richland, Moses Lake and Chiawana in 4A, while West Valley and Sunnyside team with Kamiakin, Pasco, Eastmont, Hanford, Kennewick and Southridge in 3A. In the 4A circuit, wide open is the best way to describe the field with favorites and longshots being interchangeable. Eisenhower and Wenatchee were the class of the conference a year ago, but the big question is how well will they restock? Both teams graduated most of their offenses, as did Walla Walla, and will debut new playmakers this fall. Richland, Davis and Chiawana all had losing records in ’09 but are poised to rise. The Bombers return seven all-league players, with first-team Cascade running back Jake McKinney coming off a 1,272-yard, 10-touchdown junior season. Davis is stacked with experience led by all-state defensive back David Trimble and quarterback Deion Wright, who threw for 1,229 yards in ’09 and returns his top two receivers. The Pirates were 3-7 last year but lost two overtime games and were eight points from being 6-4. Equipped with seniors for the first time, Chiawana is also loaded on offense and led by the CBBN’s top returning quarterback in Luc Graff. But the Riverhawks have to improve a run defense that ranked last in the conference

Kamiakin’s Tim White (2), shown here against Eisenhower last season, is back for his senior campaign. last year. In the 3A division, city rivals Kamiakin and Southridge are the clear leaders out of the gate. They have the most allleague talent back, they won eight games each in their 4A opt-up season a year ago and they each have a major offensive weapon. Kamiakin wide receiver Tim White was last year’s Cascade Division offensive player of the year, leading the entire CBBN by a mile with 70 catches for 1,052 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was also a unanimous first-team Cascade pick at three other spots — defensive back, kick return and all-purpose.

The Braves should have a prolific passing game with White and two other all-league receivers, Tyler Holle and A.J. Griffiths. Southridge will counter that with a powerful ground game led by Columbia cooffensive player of the year Dallin Palmer, who last year rushed for 1,427 yards and 15 touchdowns. The 3A Division has plenty of experience at running back. In addition to Palmer there are four other returners who logged 100-plus carries a year ago — Hanford’s Cameron Wagar (136-882), Pasco’s DeVante Lamb (139-799) and Kamiakin’s Dom Davis (121502).

• LUC GRAFF, Chiawana, QB: Head coach’s son has best returning numbers of CBBN throwers — 1,309 yards, 12 TDs in nine games — and will have junior WR Miquiyah Zamora back from injury. • DREW LOFTUS, Kennewick, WR-DB: Noted as a first-team Columbia receiver with 42 catches, 579 yards and nine TDs, Loftus was also among CBBN leaders in punt returns and interceptions. • JAKE McKINNEY, Richland, RB: The Bombers’ 200-pound back packed the ball 214 times last year

LOCATION: Pasco (1,388, 10-12). HOME FIELD: Edgar Prown Stadium. 2009 RECORD: 1-6 CBBN Cascade, 1-8 overall. LAST PLAYOFF BERTH: None.

‘CIRCLE D ON THE CALE NDAR’

• SUNNYSIDE at WEST VALLEY, Clasen Field, Sept. 24: The Grizzlies own a three-game win streak over WV, two of them by a touchdown or less. • EISENHOWER vs. DAVIS, Zaepfel Stadium, Oct. 8: After meeting in last year’s season opener, the Yakima rivals will have five games to prepare for their 58th meeting. • KAMIAKIN vs. SOUTHRIDGE, Lampson Stadium, Oct. 8: This one could decide the CBBN’s 3A Division title. The Suns prevailed 14-3 last year in week one. ‘DON’T FORGET THE INTANGIBLES’

• The single-game rushing records at Eisenhower and Davis were both set against each other in the rivalry series — Ike’s Pete Pallas going for 309 in 1974 and Davis’ Jackson Johnson piling up 312 in 2000.

KICKOFF 2010

“They’re pillars of the team.” East Valley’s linemen will provide plenty of support for the Red Devils under new coach Mark Mochel

By SCOTT SANDSBERRY YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

ou won’t hear a complimentary “Attaboy” from an East Valley coach to any Red Devil lineman. It’ll be, instead, “Attapillar.” On the line at East Valley, there are no boys, no guys. They’re pillars. Period. That’s the one-for-all, all-for-one lineman philosophy preached by new coach Mark Mochel, and the team has clearly bought into it. “I just thought it was an amazing idea,” said Joey Sparks, a 6-foot 2, 260-pound senior tackle, left in photo. “You know, pillars — they hold big structures up. So we think that as a line, we kind of hold the team up. As pillars, we know we need to step up and be leaders for the whole team.” Mochel replaces the highly successful Barry Reifel, who stepped down after leading the Red Devils to 144 wins in 21 seasons. Last year Mochel was the defensive coordinator at Selah, which held seven of 11 foes to 12 points or fewer, and his idea of football success starts with stingy defense and tough line play. The pillars concept was the first thing he introduced to his new team. “It’s kind of a new thought, a new idea, and it really opened my eyes and gave me a new way of thinking,” said 6-1, 255-pound senior Conor Palomarez, right in photo. “Pretty much all of us took it to heart pretty quickly. It helps us bond together.” So strongly has the philosophy taken hold that when powerful junior Eli Curtsinger found out he was moving from middle linebacker to defensive end this year, Mochel said, “He was most excited about become a pillar.” On offense, Curtsinger will remain at running back, where he’ll share the carries with explosive transfer Cody Nickoloff, creating a real “thunder and lightning” tandem behind returning quarterback Jonathan Janis. “Eli is really just thunder up the middle,” Mochel said. “He’s blowing people up. Nickoloff, meanwhile, rushed for 1,228 yards and 14 touchdowns last year at Wapato, and his transition to East Valley seems to have been seamless. “He’s a real nice guy; we’ve all gotten to know him really well,” Palomarez said. “He’s come together with us and he’s found his home, really.” And that home is behind the pillars — like Nick Hernandez, who Sparks says “was born with leadership ability”; Ezequiel Viramontes (“he’s worked his butt off all year in the weightroom”); Salvador Rodriguez (“one of those good guys you can lean on”); and Brenden Barela, who earned all-CWAC honorable mention last year despite playing only half the season after moving into the district. Pillars all. “We never single out linemen,” Sparks said. “It’s ‘Good job, pillars.’ I really like that.”

SARA GETTYS/Yakima Herald-Republic

“He’s got big shoes to fill.”

Adam Haberman is set take Ellensburg’s reins after the graduation of Ethan Sterkel By SCOTT SPRUILL YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

rom one perspective, this is way too much to ask of any teenager. Adam Haberman will be Ellensburg’s new quarterback this season, following not only a state semifinal season for the defending CWAC champs but the record-setting career of Ethan Sterkel. A senior, Haberman has never started a varsity game at quarterback and he spent all of last season as a wide receiver. Talk about jumping in the fire. But, from another perspective, he’s a perfect fit with an ideal situation to

succeed. Haberman actually grew up playing quarterback, started there for the JV team two years ago and has one of the most prolific receivers in state history — Kramer Ferrell — to lean on. “We just want Adam to relax and play,” said Ellensburg coach Randy Affholter. “After last season we talked to him about not worrying about matching up with Ethan or his numbers. That’s not a concern. Adam just needs to go out and be himself.” There’s plenty to suggest that Haberman can offer a lot. With Sterkel on his way to 75 touchdowns and 7,149 yards in his three seasons, the quarterback position was obviously spoken for last year.

But Affholter and his coaches loved Haberman’s athletic ability and field smarts and wanted him to be more than just Sterkel’s backup. So he became a receiver basically overnight. “That first game I had some butterflies, but once I got my first catch out of the way I was OK,” said the 6-foot, 175-pound Haberman. “From there I got some momentum going.” Indeed, momentum that led to 43 receptions, 690 yards, six touchdowns and all-CWAC honors. And even though he wasn’t getting field reps as a quarterback, that experience should help with the return transition. “I see things better and I’m used to

the game speed,” he explained. “Being a wideout helped me see the coverages and understand the defenses better.” Ferrell is a monster target with 40 touchdowns and 3,568 career yards with a full season to go. And even with Haberman’s switch, the Bulldogs have another experienced weapon in speedster Sungyoung Lee, an allconference receiver who placed third in the Class 2A state 100-meter dash last spring. “I’m excited. QB is my favorite position,” Haberman said. “Ethan was a great player and I learned a lot from him. He taught me to play my own game, not force anything and get progressively better each game.”

“They’re good for the locker room.” Grandview’s four captains embody the team-first attitude Coach Scroggins wants

By JERREL SWENNING YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

lazoned on the locker room wall, it’s the last message for the Grandview Greyhounds on their way to the field and the first objective for third-year coach Jeremy Scroggins: “Where we go one … we go all” Scroggins, the 2000 Class 1A player of the year for perennial state power Royal, is in his third year at the reins of the Greyhounds program. At just 27, he brings a wealth of knowledge to the position as both a player — he was an all-conference linebacker at Whitworth after starring for the Knights — and as a coach — he absorbed plenty playing for the

architects of Royal’s dominance, Bob Nielsen and Wiley Allred, and was a three-year graduate assistant for the Pirates. Scroggins’ biggest challenge has been teaching his players to play together. “Maybe not the most-skilled team wins the championship but the team that plays together, that’s the biggest thing I learned from Coach Allred,” said Scroggins, noting a “100 percent buy-in” this season. No players better represent that ideal than Grandview’s four captains — seniors (left to right in photo) Kevin Vasquez, Adam Morales, Froy Flores and Aaron Ling. “They’ve upheld our core covenants — some things we’re really trying to

focus on with character on the field, in the classroom and in the community,” Scroggins said. In tapping the quartet, their teammates selected just one player (wide receiver Flores) at a skill position, and two reserves (Ling and Vasquez) a year ago. And three of the players (Ling, Morales and Vasquez) labor in the trenches. That they chose those who best represent what Scroggins wants from his team isn’t lost on the coach. “That’s kind of cool when the kids do that,” he said. “Because sometimes that’s overlooked.” For the players, it’s an honor to be a captain. “It feels great to know the team looks

up to me and I can lead them,” Flores said. Adds Vasquez: “It shows who they trust.” Turnout has climbed each year for Scroggins and reached a very respectable 70 players when practice began a couple weeks ago. That’s a total that is gaining on the Ellensburgs, Othellos and Prossers of the CWAC. Winning will do that. Grandview posted its first winning season since 2005 last fall when they went 6-4 in the rugged CWAC. As too, apparently, will playing as one. “This team has become more of a family than it ever was,” Ling said. “Everybody seems to know how to put trust in each other.”

KICKOFF 2010

SARA GETTYS/Yakima Herald-Republic

“He’s as tough as nails.”

A rough childhood, an unwavering faith helped make Prosser’s Cesar Lopez a force By SCOTT SANDSBERRY YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

f you want to see big hits at Prosser, look for the little guy. Cesar Lopez tops out at 5-foot8, but packed on that frame is 200 pounds of football fury. And although Prosser coaches don’t keep tackle statistics, they know who’d be on top of the list. “He plays with a chip on his shoulder and a fire from within,” Prosser coach Benji Sonnichsen said of Lopez, who started every game last year at middle linebacker and enters the 2010 season as a Mustang team captain. “He’s the toughest football player on our team, and he’s definitely one of the toughest to come through here over

the last era of Prosser football. He won’t back down from any fight. He’s not the fastest kid, but he’s a kid that will not back down.” Maybe that’s because Lopez has been through too much to back down now. First there was the childhood of homeless squalor in Nicaragua, where even the most rudimentary education came with a price tag. Then came the rugged trip on foot “through the mountains and mud” to reach the United States. As a 6-year-old he had to be the strong young man, seeing his mother behind the impenetrable glass of immigration incarceration and not understanding why she couldn’t come home. But the strength also comes from something else.

“I have a big brother ... a spiritual brother,” Lopez said. “His name is Jesus.” “I’ve asked Him that I could be something big, that people would know who I am, know that I came from a poor family in Nicaragua. I wanted to proclaim His name. I wanted to be a role model to teenagers. I see them killing each other, going out partying, whatever — and it’s sad. I try to be somebody to look up to. “(Teammates) say to me, ‘You’re strong, you’re tough, you’re not scared of nothing,’” Lopez said. “I tell them it’s the big guy upstairs. It’s not me.” Lopez knew no English when he came to the United States, and felt both joy and uncertainty when he began attending school. “(In Nicaragua) you have to pay for school, and here teach-

ers were teaching me and I was like, ‘Am I going to get charged? No?’ So I started taking advantage of it.” Lopez takes nothing for granted — not even Prosser’s place among the CWAC’s upper echelon. When a few teammates weren’t putting in the offseason effort, Lopez was the first to chide them for it. “I told them you don’t win games not showing up for conditioning. You win games in the summer by working hard,” Lopez said. “Two hundred and 12 (degrees) is when water starts boiling. Not at 211, at 212. It’s all in that extra degree, that little bit of extra work and energy. That little extra work can make all the difference.”

“ You can only hope to

Ellensburg’s Ferrell quickly moving up the ranks of the state’s all-time best receivers By SCOTT SPRUILL YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

ramer Ferrell knows exactly what numbers will affect Ellensburg’s football team the most this season. They are last year’s team records — 9-0 in the CWAC and 12-1 for the season. “Everybody will come out and give us their best game,” Ferrell predicted. “It’ll be fun to be in a challenging situation like that, and we’ll definitely have to be ready for it every week.” Especially you, No. 7. Any scheme to keep the Bulldogs from a similar run will have a lot to do with trying to keep Ferrell from catching a dozen passes, streaking all over the field and scoring two or three touchdowns. The trouble for the CWAC is, containment on Ferrell has been tried before. And completely failed. After a breakout 70-catch, 18-touchdown campaign as a sophomore, ANDY SAWYER/Yakima Herald-Republic file Ferrell became a major target for Ellensburg’s Kramer Ferrell escapes the clutches of a Selah defender during a defenses last year. Following his coach’s counsel, Ferrell has diligently pushed for improvement and not coasted on his past achievements. He’s got a to-do list for his final season. “Mostly it’s about better route running,” he explained. “I need to break off more cleanly, and I don’t always get the depth I should. The other key thing is better blocking, which gets overlooked.” The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Ferrell has the speed (4.45 40) to be a deep threat, but his ability to take a short pass and break off a big run is notorious throughout the conference. A 5-yard bubble screen can turn into a 60-yard touchdown in just a few shifty moves and missed tackles. And while Ferrell and Haberman work out their new chemistry, there’s an ally for both in Sungyoung Lee, a statecaliber sprinter who’s an experienced threat in the receiving corps and a dangerous kick returner. “Having Sungyoung back gives that balance and experience,” Affholter said of his offensive weapons. “If teams try to take Kramer away, we have more than that. Kramer understands that and adapts real well to what defenses throw

at him.” Credit for some of that ability goes to his family lineage in the game. His older brother Wes was a two-time all-CWAC wide receiver, and his father Pat was a running back at Kittitas who led the Coyotes to the Class B state quarterfinals in 1979 and ‘81. Prior to his dad’s high school run, Ferrell’s uncle Chip was a scoring machine at Kittitas, amassing 58 touchdowns and nearly 4,000 rushing yards at Kittitas. “I try to remind them once in a while they were in a B league,” Ferrell said with as much family smack-talk as he can muster. The point is the Ferrells have enjoyed their big numbers, but the true joy comes in winning games with your teammates. Before last year’s 12-1 breakout campaign, the Bulldogs were 6-4 in Ferrell’s freshman and sophomore years. “I’ve had some good years but it’s about more than just individual stats,” Ferrell said. “Hopefully I can do my job, take some pressure off the other guys and we can have another great season.”

KICKOFF 2010

SARA GETTYS/Yakima Herald-Republic

“He’s a real workhorse.”

Selah lineman Scott Ellenberger wastes no effort in preparing for his senior season By SCOTT SANDSBERRY YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

o call Scott Ellenberger a workhorse is quite appropriate. The Selah senior offensive guard/defensive tackle practically lived in the weightroom all summer, setting the example for younger Vikings to live up to. He squats nearly twice his body weight. As an offensive and defensive lineman, he will only rarely leave the field this fall. But what he really has is the mentality of a tugboat. You know: relentless, deceptively powerful, capable of moving loads significantly larger than itself and, well, not too fast in the water. At least, not at first. Last winter, because he had friends

on the swim team and because it was “one more thing to keep me in shape,” Ellenberger turned out for that aquatic sport. Huh? A 260-pound, weightlifting football lineman in the pool? Did he even know how to swim? “Everybody kind of knows how to doggy paddle,” cracked Ellenberger, a refreshingly honest and self-deprecating sort. On his first day of swim practice, he warmed up with the others, going “back and forth across the pool three or four times in the time it took people to do 20 times back and forth. I was tired.” And that was just warmup. In the time trial that ensued, the already-spent Ellenberger couldn’t finish the required 100 yards. But he kept at it, became a legitimate

competitor who cut his event times in half by season’s end, earned a letter and quite literally reshaped his body. “It was really weird,” said Ellenberger, who admitted being soft — “a creampuff, actually” — as a freshman and sophomore footballer. “First I lost something like 20 pounds, then I gained back 25 during the course of swimming, all the while losing four pants sizes. It shaped me up.” As arguably the Vikings’ hardest worker in the offseason, Ellenberger is particularly proud of how much work some of his teammates have put in, notably junior linebacker Connor O’Malley and senior lineman Kasey Lent-Jones. All that work could pay big dividends. Selah’s freshman team went unbeaten last year, and while some of those talent-

ed youngsters figure to vie for playing time, they may have trouble getting it. Last year’s starting quarterback, Trent Douglass, returns and figures to have a trio of stellar running backs behind him in Allen Noble, Tanner Fife and junior Klayton Fleming. The Vikings’ other signal-caller, junior Jose Garcia-Prado, is a legitimate dual-threat QB, and the Vikings’ line — as always — will be one of the team’s strengths. And the line’s strongest guy has already proven he’s willing to dive into the fray head-first. As tough as it was, Ellenberger called his swim-team experience “exhilarating” — precisely what he wants this fall to be. “We’ve talked about this being our year,” Ellenberger said. “Our senior year is going to be a great year.”

KICKOFF 2010

“He can carry the team on his back.”

Mario Sanchez gets Toppenish fired up, helps lead the way for its ground attack By SCOTT SANDSBERRY YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

ario Sanchez may not have the YouTube impact of Baltimore Ravens superstar Ray Lewis and he may not even have the moves, but the Toppenish senior tries to imitate Lewis’ memorable little pregame dance before every Wildcat home game. Why? Because he knows it’s just another part of getting his teammates ready to turn themselves loose on the football field. “I want to be the vocal voice,” Sanchez said. “In the pregame before every home game, I circle everybody up, and I’m in the middle, trying to fire guys up and saying crazy stuff, doing this little dance I do. “I try to imitate Ray Lewis, his leadership. I really like how he gets everybody up and the team follows his energy and emotion.” Toppenish coach Jason Smith likes to see that, too — because he knows when Sanchez is feeling the beat, those teammates will definitely be tough to beat. “I didn’t really realize it until the end of his sophomore year,” Smith said. “As a team, when you have players like (running backs) Carlos (Ramirez) and Ivan (Macias), hard runners and great kids, other guys get kind of overlooked and it seems like the team really follows them. “But the team plays its best when Mario’s on a roll. And it’s not what he says, or it’s not that he pancakes a lineman every time. But when he’s feeling it, it’s a vibe that just goes throughout the team. It’s a difficult thing to pinpoint, but the team goes where he goes. They key off him. They may not even know that, but that’s what happens.” Although Toppenish will be one of the smallest teams in the CWAC, a ground-gobbling double-wing offense has carried the Wildcats to 10 wins over the last two seasons — surpassing their cumulative total of the previous four years. And they take great pride on the defensive side; in 2009, only one Toppenish foe scored more than

SARA GETTYS/Yakima Herald-Republic

28 points. “Defensively, our mentality is to fly to the ball. Everybody gang-tackles,” Sanchez said. “Our linebackers are great — they make our job easier, with Carlos (Ramirez), Jesus Guel and David Chavez.” On offense, Ramirez and Macias

combined to rush for 21 touchdowns and nearly 2,000 yards in 2009, while quarterback Daniel Maldonado completed nearly 58 percent of his pass attempts. And with an offensive line Smith said has “so much depth this year,” the Wildcats could well move up in the CWAC standings.

“We’re not really big, but we use our quickness as an advantage,” Sanchez said. “We all know once we’re on a roll, we’re a hard team to beat. With the offense we run, if we run it right and if the linemen get their assignment blocks, no one can stop it.”

KICKOFF 2010

“He has elevated his game.” A fixture on the lines, Wapato’s James Shumate is striving for a new level

By JERREL SWENNING YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

apato’s James Shumate is looking for another big push. The 6-foot, 215-pound senior ranked among the Yakima Valley’s best heaving the 12-pound shot last spring, earning a trip to the Class 2A state track and field meet in Tacoma. This fall, Shumate is looking to throw around opposing offensive linemen. Second-year Wapato coach Chris Treat figures the three-year starter on the offensive line might be a natural on the other side of the ball, where he’ll be in the lineup for a second straight year. “Defensively, that’s where he’s going to make his greatest improvement,” Treat said. “He could be able to push a kid off the ball and then get around him.” And that’s when the fun begins. “It’s always good to get past the line and hit someone in the backfield,” Shumate said. That would be a great help to a Wapato program that has struggled in recent years and is young again this season. Shumate’s spot on the offensive front is still in question, Treat said. But that’s hardly a bad thing. Shumate’s versatility — he’s played up and down the line — should benefit his younger teammates. “It gives us a chance to find our identity ... it’ll be a huge help,” Treat said. “We can put him in multiple spots and he’ll give us leadership.” While the youthful Wolves are hungry for success, Shumate got a little taste of it last spring. Posting the Valley’s fifth best mark going into districts, he uncorked easily his top throw of the season — 45 feet, 101⁄4 inches — to place third at the CWAC district meet and qualify for state at Mount Tahoma High School. Although he didn’t medal at state, Shumate left encouraged and motivated. “It makes you strive to be that much better,” he said. To that end, he’s spent much of the summer in the weightroom and has benefited from a growth spurt. Still months away, Shumate is eager for track season to come around, too. He plans to compete in the 100-meter dash as well as the shot and discus. As far as the track success translating to the gridiron, Treat is certain it will. “Track has worked wonders for that kid,” Treat said. “Hopefully he’ll bring the same dogged determination to (defensive end).” Of course, Shumate is reminded, it’s only useful if he’s still in the play. “Track does really help .... but if you overpursue,” he said. “You’ve got to learn to go the distance, but not go too far.”

• ISAAC ANDERSON, Prosser, RB-DB: Led the CWAC in rushing last year as just a sophomore, dominating the final three games with 564 yards on a workhorse 96 carries. • KRAMER FERRELL, Ellensburg, WR-DB: Coming off the state’s No. 3 all-time receiving season — 1,793 yards — and has hauled in 40 touchdown passes in his career. • DOMINIC GARZA, Prosser, WR-DB: The Mustangs’ two-way standout was a CWAC first-teamer at defensive back and wide receiver with 45 catches for 722 yards. • CODY NICKOLOFF, East Valley, RB-LB: Moving in from Wapato, Nickoloff brings instant offense following his 1,228-yard, 14-touchdown season for the Wolves in ’09. • BOBBY RIDDLE, Ellensburg, RB-LB: The Bulldogs’ defensive anchor was an all-league linebacker as a sophomore who rose to allstate status during ’09 playoff season. ‘ C I R CLED ON T H E CA L EN DA R’

• PROSSER at ELLENSBURG, Oct. 1: The two CWAC favorites will meet in the fifth week of the season at Andreotti Field. • SELAH at PROSSER, Oct. 15: A year ago the Vikings trailed 19-0 but rallied to win and bounce Prosser from the playoffs. • EAST VALLEY at WAPATO, Oct. 29: EV’s Cody Nickoloff will return to Doornink Field to face his old teammates. ‘DON’T FORGET THE INTANGIBLES’

• In the final regular-season game on Nov. 4, Toppenish will host Wapato for the 100-year anniversary of their rivalry. They have met on the field 109 times and Wapato leads the remarkably tight series 52-50-7.

GORDON KING/Yakima Herald-Republic file

Prosser’s Isaac Anderson is back for his junior season after leading the CWAC in rushing yards last year.

They’re establishing the run Top teams figure to stay atop CWAC, with running backs taking much of the spotlight By SCOTT SANDSBERRY YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

The prognosis for this year’s CWAC campaign is a line straight out of the Bogart classic “Casablanca”: Round up the usual suspects. Yes, it’s Prosser, Ellensburg and Othello in whatever order, East Valley, Selah and Toppenish nipping at their heels and Ephrata, Wapato and Quincy giving chase. P.S. The CWAC figures to be more of a hammer-it-out, ground-bound league this year. That’s P.S. as in Post-Sterkel, the first year since Ellensburg rode quarterback Ethan Sterkel — the league’s top offensive player and an all-state defensive back — into the state semifinals. Now he’s at Central Washington University and the CWAC is chock-full of pow-

erful lines and capable running backs. “I’m thinking our league is going to shift more toward the run,” said Toppenish coach Jason Smith, whose doublewing formation was already heavily weighted to the ground attack. “(Isaac) Anderson at Prosser is a good runner. Ellensburg loses Sterkel, and he was a pretty good quarterback. (Cody) Nickoloff ” — a Wapato-to-East Valley transfer and arguably the league’s most explosive runner — “is worth two wins, possibly three or four over what they were going to get anyway.” Selah has had some prolific passing attacks in recent years, but this year coach Jeff Jamieson has a surplus of capable running backs and a relative shortage of proven receivers. Meaning ... “We’re going to try and play more ball control, see if we can slam it up there and get a first down,” Jamieson said. Interestingly, the team that lost the best passer — Sterkel, who completed 80 percent of his passes for 30 touchdowns and more than 3,000 yards in the regular

season alone — hopes to keep airing it out. “We still want to spread and throw and get our athletes in space,” Ellensburg coach Randy Affholter said. “We lost everybody up front (in the line). Our perimeter kids are very good, but our line, that’s going to be the question mark. The one thing that will be to our advantage is we have a lot of kids (on the line) we feel can play varsity football.” Othello brings back a half-dozen players who made the all-CWAC team last season, Toppenish can depend on possibly the league’s widest array of returning starters, and perennial power Prosser has the kind of arsenal to return the Mustangs to their accustomed spot at the top. But Prosser coach Benji Sonnichsen looks to the team that lost the most — in Sterkel — as the pick to defend its 2009 CWAC crown. “Definitely, Ellensburg is the team to beat,” Sonnichsen said. “I know they lost a lot of guys, but they have a lot of swagger right now and I know they’ll take a lot of pride in defending the CWAC.”

KICKOFF 2010

SARA GETTYS/Yakima Herald-Republic

“His motor never stops.”

Highland all-SCAC West lineman Alex Laughery has been a fixture for four seasons By DAVE THOMAS YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

t’s nothing complicated or abstract. Alex Laughery doesn’t hesitate for a moment when asked what motivates him. “I like hitting someone on every play,” Highland’s all-SCAC West pick on both sides of the line said. That’s particularly true on offense, which is why the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Laughery enjoys his work on that side of the ball just a little bit more than on defense. “I have a chance to hit someone on every play and know that every block on

the offensive line counts,” he said. And with his combination of athletic ability and an almost endless supply of energy, Laughery gets in plenty of licks on a weekly basis for the Scotties. “You could see that football was a big deal for him and that he likes to hit people,” Scotties coach Shane Roy said. “Football is in his DNA.” Although Laughery has been a standout up front for Highland since earning all-league honorable mention as a freshman, it was the his work in the past year and a half that has transitioned him into a player who is now drawing the attention of some NCAA Division II schools, possibly as a tight end.

“I was working hard at it but just wanted to do better and get to the next level,” said Laughery, who credits his work with defensive line coach and weight room coordinator Thomas Hale for his improvements. “He’s behind me 100 percent and helped me do different kinds of lifting to get the muscles going.” “It all came together for Alex last year,” Roy said. “He got into the weight room and (Hale) took him under his wing and got him playing football really hard on every play. “What he’s developed in the last two years is the nastiness that goes with that position. Being nasty is half the battle and he relishes that role.” That determination is particularly

noticeable on offense. “He’s a good defensive player, but as an offensive lineman, he likes to impose his will on people,” Roy said. “He enjoys pancaking people. He wants to move forward and move kids. “We can pretty much dial up a run play behind him and get positive yards.” “I love to just go hit somebody and keep pushing him downfield,” said Laughery, who, as a soon-to-be fourth-year starter, is also accepting a leadership role. “I want to help everyone out. I want to be a vocal leader but also show them the proper way to do things.” Especially when it comes to putting a hit on someone.

KICKOFF 2010

“He’s a student of the game.” An all-state defensive back, La Salle’s Dan Brusic is set to take the lead on offense By DAVE THOMAS YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

an Brusic’s offensive opportunity has finally arrived. While a defensive stalwart for the La Salle Lightning, Brusic patiently played understudy to former quarterback Mike McGree the past three seasons. Now he’s ready for the spotlight. “This is my final year to start, so I want to make the most of it,” said Brusic, whose QB experience to date is five games as a freshman when McGree was injured, and mop-up duty in lopsided victories. “I’ve been learning the offense because I knew this would be my one year. “I love the game. I think I bring a passion for it to the field.” That resolve has his coach convinced Brusic’s ready for the starting role. “He is so anxious and so ready to play (quarterback),” Lightning coach Jack McMillan said, marveling at Brusic’s dedication to the game. “He’s the type of kid who doesn’t want to sit down. He’s in incredible shape because he works so hard. Danny is a driven kid with a work ethic second to none. “He’s going to do a very good job.” Comfortable with the tangible aspects of the position, Brusic said his biggest challenge is gaining the trust of his teammates. “I’m pretty focused (on the field) ... but there’s more pressure on me,” he said. “Guys will look up to me to do things right. I want to make sure we’re all ready to go.” McMillan is certain that won’t be a problem. “He gets in there and commands the huddle,” the coach said. “He knows what’s going on. “Probably the best thing about Danny is the kids really trust him. You can’t ask for a whole lot more than that.” If there’s one downside to Brusic taking charge of the offense, it’s that he may have to cut back on his primary passion — playing defense. Although he’s a two-time all-state pick at defensive back, the hard-hitting 5-foot-7, 175-pounder knows that holding such a critical offensive role could lessen his defensive impact. “Having the passion for football I have, I’d rather play defense,” he said. “But I’ve been waiting for this chance to play (quarterback) ... and I’ll do what is best for the team.” What’s best, in his coach’s mind, is allowing the senior leader to have a two-way impact. “He told me that if he had to go just one way, he’d go with defense,” McMillan said. “I said, ‘Don’t worry. You’re not going one way.’” Which should be a double dose of good news for La Salle.

KICKOFF 2010

“He’s all business.” NV’s Carson Kass is back after a scary ankle injury By DAVE THOMAS YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

arson Kass is one tough kid. Just ask his coach. After Kass hurt his right ankle against Goldendale in Week 6 last season, the Naches Valley offensive lineman tried telling coach Ty Kime, “It was OK.” It wasn’t. The ankle was broken and a week later, Kass had six screws and a plate surgically inserted, and, all of a sudden, Kass wasn’t sure about his future in athletics. Fast forward 51⁄2 months and Kass was not only rehabilitated, he was starting — at catcher, no less — for the Rangers’ baseball team. “I was a little nervous that first week or so,” Kass said of playing baseball. “It was sore. But after the first week or so, it wasn’t too bad. “I didn’t think (when I first got hurt) that I’d be able to play football (this fall).” But play he will — which doesn’t surprise Kime. “That was one of the worst injuries I’ve seen in a long time,” Kime said. “But I had zero concerns (about him getting back out there). It’s just his work ethic. He’s worked harder than anyone I’ve seen in the weight room.” Kass followed his doctor’s instructions, not pushing too hard too soon, but wasted no time once he got the green light. “That first week (after surgery) I tried to keep it elevated,” he said. “They said that was one of the most crucial times in the recovery, so I tried not to mess that up.” Once that stage passed, Kass got back in the weight room, working his upper body at first, before rehabbing the ankle and strengthening his legs. “I think I kept up good pace,” he said. “When I did get some work in, I worked pretty hard.” Although he managed to play baseball, Kass said he didn’t feel really comfortable until the end of the school year. “It didn’t feel 100 percent,” he said, “but it felt a lot better.” Now, after a summer of working maintenance with the forest service during the day and lifting weights in the evening, Kass can’t wait to get back on the field. “I just want to keep the intensity up every play,” he said. And the Rangers can’t wait to take advantage of his athleticism. So much so that they will move the 5-foot-11, 245-pounder from center to right guard “to take advantage of that (ability),” with Kime adding that the senior sets a standard he hopes others will emulate. “He’s not a real vocal leader, but guys follow him wherever he goes because they know he’s doing the right things,” Kime said. “We’re looking forward to having him back out there.” But not as much as Kass wants to get back out there.

SARA GETTYS/Yakima Herald-Republic

“The game is won in the trenches.” Three senior linemen lead the way for Zillah’s vaunted wishbone offense

By DAVE THOMAS YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

ven off the field there’s a sense of teamwork among Zillah’s three offensive anchors. During their interview for this story, they worked together, reading and feeding off each other. It’s that cohesion and cooperation between senior linemen (left to right in photo) Ty Purdy, Nathaniel Deardorff and Kyle Kluever that’s a prime reason behind Zillah’s successful wishbone attack the past two seasons and the optimism about the upcoming campaign. “They’re just hard-working, good kids

who lead our team,” coach Rock Winters said of the three who will each be a third-year starter this fall. “We’re happy to have them anchoring our line.” And all three are happy to be there, leading the way. “The offense is based on our line and we have to step up,” said Kluever, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound left tackle. “We make holes where we can, so the backs can get through,” said Deardorff, a 6-2, 215-pound right guard. Not just talented, these three are smart players, which is critical to the success of a wishbone offense, Winters said. “The best wishbone teams I’ve been around have smart offensive

linemen,” Winters said. “They have to be aggressive and quick-thinking. If you’re not a quick thinker, you’ll struggle as an offensive lineman in the wishbone. “All three of these guys are good students. They’re smart.” It also doesn’t hurt playing together as long as they have. “We make sure everyone knows their job and knows where they’re supposed to be,” said Purdy, a 6-3, 220-pound right tackle. “It’s a lot easier to do your job if you don’t have to worry about the guy on either side of you.” “It helps knowing these guys for so long,” Deardorff said. “We understand the system. I don’t have to think too much. It’s all routine.”

With those three anchoring the line, Zillah has reversed its fortunes after a 3-7 record in 2007, going 8-3 in 2008 and 9-2 last season. Now, as they prepare for their prep swan songs, they are hoping to leave more than a legacy of victories at Zillah. “There’s not as many seniors (this season), so we want to step up and show guys how it’s done,” Purdy said. “I’m not going to play after high school, so I’m going to play and practice every day like it’s my last game. “We want to show the younger guys to cherish everything they have now because it’ll be gone before you know it.”

• TONY CACCHIOTTI and NIC

WOODARD, La Salle, RBs: The Lightning’s move to Class 1A will be led by the 1-2 punch that features the bruising, 200-pound Cacchiotti and the speedy Woodard (12.2 yards per carry in ’09). • TYRELL CRONIN, Goldendale, QB: The West’s first-team all-conference selection will try to pick up some of the offensive slack left by the injury to standout running back Torey Spaulding-Jimenez. • MATT HADLEY, Connell, RBDB: The two-way first-team all-SCAC East selection was the Class 1A player of the year as a sophomore and has already orally committed to Brigham Young, where his older brother, Spencer, was a linebacker in 2008 before leaving on a mission.

‘ C I R CLED ON T H E CA L EN DA R’

• GOLDENDALE at NACHES

VALLEY, Naches High Stadium, Oct. 8: The Timberwolves were 5-0 when they hosted the Rangers last season and were shut out. • ZILLAH at LA SALLE, Marquette Stadium, Oct. 15: The Lightning were unbeaten in conference play the last four years in Class 2B, while the Leopards have posted back-to-back 6-0 marks in the SCAC West. Get there on time, as both teams feature powerful ground games and stingy defense that could make for a quick game. • ROYAL at CONNELL, Dennis Esser Field, Oct. 22: This one usually goes well beyond deciding the SCAC East champion as the Knights and Eagles have won four of the last six Class 1A state titles.

‘DON’T FORGET THE INTANGIBLES’

• While the SCAC East has become a state force — at least one of its teams has advanced to the semifinals or beyond in the last six seasons — only Zillah has carried the flag for the West past the round of 16 during that stretch. The Leopards fell in the quarterfinals in 2004 and ’05.

Stellar La Salle won’t sneak up on anybody Class 2B power joins SCAC West By DAVE THOMAS YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

There’s a new kid on the SCAC West block, but don’t think this newbie is going to get pushed around by the established big boys. In fact, most of the coaches believe La Salle will have an immediate impact on the league race. “They’re going to come in and compete right away,” Highland coach Shane Roy said of the Lightning, which is moving up from 2B and replacing Mabton, which shifts to the SCAC East, where defending statechampion Connell resides. “La Salle is definitely a team to reckon with,” said Cle Elum coach Tony Kretschman, who takes over after longtime coach Mark Randleman retired. “Adding La Salle brings the competition level up.” So much so that La Salle was considered one of the top teams when coaches were asked for preseason favorites, along with defending champion Zillah, Goldendale and Naches Valley. La Salle coach Jack McMillan is flattered by the attention, but he knows his team will have to earn the respect of its peers. “No. 1, we know we’re not going to be in any of those 40, 50, 60 to nothing games,” he said of La Salle’s domination in the Central Washington League. “Every game now will be a challenge and we’ll have to be prepared.” La Salle is certainly capable of meeting that challenge thanks to a solid line and deep stable of running backs, featuring bruising senior Tony

Cacchiotti, fleetfooted senior Branden Seymour and junior Nic Woodard. “We’re like a lot Cronin of teams in the league,” McMillan said, “we’ve got a lot of good young kids, but we have to stay away from injuries.” Zillah and Goldendale appear to be the other prime contenders, although both have already suffered key setbacks. Zillah has an experienced line and wishbone-veteran Joe Burns at quarterback, but the Leopards won’t have rugged Chris Castillo, who decided to skip football to concentrate on wrestling. At Goldendale, the Timberwolves return firstteam all-league quarterback Tyrell Cronin, who sets up behind a veteran line featuring three allleague seniors. But the Timberwolves won’t have all-league running back Torey Spaulding-Jimenez, who suffered a broken leg this summer. Naches Valley, with experience on both lines, figures to be in the mix as well, although the Rangers need to replace virtually all of their skill position players on offense. Among the others, Cle Elum has a strong tradition, but the Warriors also lost most of their skill position players; Highland has experience, but the status of running back Forrest Kopta is up in the air because of an eligibility issue; and Granger faces a rebuilding job, according to coach Gary Ely.

Excuse White Swan coach Andy Bush if he’s not crestfallen about La Salle opting up to join the SCAC West in Class 1A. A graduate of the nowdefunct Carroll High and a friend of Lightning coach Jack McMillan and staff, Bush has a natural affinity for the Catholic school. It’s just hard to get past the 17-0 Central Washington B League record La Salle rolled to while the Lightning were conference foes with the Cougars. “It’s nice to see them move up to the SCAC,” Bush said. Of even more relief to Bush

and his Kittitas counterpart Merle Watkins is the reduced travel in the realigned CWB. While a trip to Lake Roosevelt isn’t a quick jaunt, it definitely isn’t the long haul to Oroville on the Canadian border. “I think we’re all happy about the new travel schedule,” Watkins said. “We’re excited to get home at a decent hour.” White Swan and Kittitas will be joined in the league by fellow CWB holdovers Soap Lake and Waterville, and former Class 1A schools Warden and Lake Roosevelt. “It’s gonna be a tougher league with two 1A teams moving down,” Bush said. Both the Coyotes and Cougars advanced to the state playoffs the past two seasons, with Kittitas looking for its

sixth straight trip this season. The two teams meet in the league opener at White Swan on Oct. 1. In the Class 1B 8-man ranks, Lyle-Wishram is leaving the Southeast 1B division to join the Pacific Coast Conference’s South Division, which includes 2008 state runner-up Wishkah Valley. The Cougars, 7-2 last season, again will feature standout running back Henry Matai, who is closing in on 4,000 rushing yards for his career. Easton-Thorp, formerly of the Pacific Coast South will be joining the Northeast 1B League. After finishing 1-8 in its first season, Sunnyside Christian will again play in the Southeast 1B, which includes defending state champion TriCities Prep.
