Fall Home&Garden
P
Pam Edwards has always known how she’s wanted her home to look.
COVER: The backyard of Pam & Stephen. TOP: Bridge to the couple’s house covered in twinkle lights. BELOW LEFT: Kitchen window. BELOW RIGHT: A panoramic view of the house’s interior.
“I never thought that I would ever live in a red house” – Pam Edwards
The former antique shop owner has spent many years in projects involving home décor. For her, it all boils down to taste. “I have an eye for a specific style and look,” she said. Her style typically leans to a farmhouse or cottage look with rustic decorations. Pam’s work in the antique industry would often require her to be on the road, away from her Seattle home of 20 years. During her travels, she found herself drawn to Yakima, which she thought a cute little town, and one full of quirks and historical homes with wonderful architecture. Perhaps it was her combination of natural instinct and years of experience with interior design, but five years ago Pam was attracted to a particular red, cottage-style house in the center of Yakima. Her husband, Stephen Stokesberry, remembers the first
day they saw the little red house. During one of the couple’s trips to Yakima, they ran across an estate sale there. They had to park across the street and then cross a white bridge to get to the house. Standing outside the quaint front gates, Pam spotted lilacs and shade trees as she peered through the breezeway to the backyard. She fell in love. “It was pretty idyllic,” Stephen said. “She was looking through the breezeway, and I was scoping out the tools. She was busy looking at the backyard, but I didn’t get she was interested in the house.” Pam couldn’t stop thinking about the red house. She was so captivated by it that at the estate sale she bought three white numbers that represented the house’s address – 1, 1, and 0 – to keep with her. Then, several things occurred around the same time, which Pam describes as a miracle. The antique store in Seattle closed, and she landed a merchandizing job in the gift shop at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. She never let go of

those three white numbers, and eventually the couple bought the house. A year later they also purchased the house next door to use as a rental. Pam and Stephen have worked on the house inside and out, customizing its décor and outbuildings to fit their needs. The couple, married for 23 years, work well together. Stephen, 63, has years of contracting and design experience, and supplies the physical work needed to help Pam’s ideas materialize. “I’m an interior designer,” Pam, 56, said. “I move things around in new ways to save money, and I love working with people; it’s always been my gift.” Stephen’s gift is his combination of having an inventor’s mind and a contractor’s work ethic, as revealed after just a few minutes of conversation. He is both visionary and doer, and he articulates the details of various projects housed in his mind’s eye to others eagerly and fluently. Despite Stephen’s more retro tastes, he said he enjoys making this home come to life as his wife envisions.

R By Green Shoot Media
seeding. Especially in September you may want to over seed or reseed to help the weaker areas,” he said. “September is the time to get the lawn invigorated. Fertilizing helps build the root system; fertilize now for recovery and once again in October.” Next, you can get busy taking care of the weeds. Forsee said to remove perennial weeds with a proper weedand-feed with herbicide. He added that aeration and dethatching – two steps to beautify your lawn and let it breathe – should also be taken care of in the cool fall weather. Don’t forget about your sprinkler system, too. Forsee recommends reducing the frequency of your automatic watering to one or two times per week when the weather cools off. October is the time to shut down the system. Your landscaping needs some attention, too. Forsee recommends mulching roses, more delicate plants
Remember the fable of the grasshopper and the ant? The ant worked like crazy getting ready for the winter, while the grasshopper relaxed and watched him work. You can’t be like the grasshopper when it comes time to winterize your lawn, but you may find you can be more laid back when you prepare your garden. Lance Forsee, president of Colonial Lawn and Garden, said, “Fall is the best time to improve or change your lawn and landscaping. Starting in September, October and even into November you should continue mowing to keep a nice even height on your lawn.” Forsee also encouraged homeowners to rake up their leaves because “they tend to suffocate the lawn.” Forsee had some great advice about fertilizing. “Keep in mind fertilizing and fall

your garden or landscaping that will produce fall fruit.
BULBS
Fall is the time to plant bulbs that will bloom in the spring. This is where planning comes in handy. You might want to draw a map of what you are planting, so you can watch those bulbs come alive in the spring. A map will also help you decide the following year what is successful for you and what didn’t work so well.
Some bulbs to try are crocus, daffodils, tulips and freesia. Follow the instructions that come with the bulbs so you know how deep to plant them and how far apart the bulbs should be. When you’re considering what colors to plant, look on the Internet for color charts if you need inspiration. That will help you find colors that are complementary. Gardeners who plant bulbs are a patient bunch, and you may
find it hard to wait for spring. With careful planning and planting in the fall, though, you will be rewarded with a beautiful

Easy Ways to Spruce up Your Home’s Interior
S
By Green Shoot Media Some of the easiest and most effective ways to spruce up your home’s interior are by using paint and home décor such as window treatments. With a few simple changes, your home can have a fresh new look in a short amount of time. But you also need to make sure you make changes that will last, not quick decisions that could leave you with regrets in the future. That’s what Janet Shockley said is especially important about window coverings. Shockley, the owner of J Designs, started her window treatment business 28 years ago, and she’s seen homeowners make big mistakes with their homes when they don’t get expert advice on the right products and installation. “You need to get it right the first time,” Shockley said. “It needs to look good and do the job that you need it to do. It needs to be both functional and attractive.” Shockley said she has seen some people “waste tons of money” buying window treatments that don’t last or that don’t do the job effectively, whether the goal is privacy, energy efficiency or the right look for a room. Choosing the correct products is critical to a design that will make you happy for the long term.
“Sometimes it’s just one product, and sometimes it’s a combination of products,” Shockley said, “but in the end, you’re making an investment in your home. You want it to be something that lasts for years.” The staff at J Designs makes all their window coverings in their own workroom and handle every detail from design to installation to service after the sale. It’s that personal service that has kept Shockley’s business thriving for nearly three decades. While the style of J Designs window coverings can suit any decor — they’re completely custom, after all — Shockley said many homeowners are asking about how their window treatments can improve their home’s energy efficiency. “Windows can be more efficient depending on what you put on them,” she said. “Cellular shades are popular. That’s the generic term for many brands you might have heard of — brands like Duette or Crystal Pleat. It’s three dimensional, so it has an R value.” (R value is a measure of installation effectiveness.) That’s just another way choosing high-quality window treatments can save you money over time.
“Your home can have a fresh new look in a short amount of time.”
PAINTING
Some design changes can be even simpler, though. A new coat of paint can also do wonders for a room and make it look clean and bright. Brad Cunningham, who runs Stein’s Ace Hardware in Yakima, advises people to use high quality semi-gloss paint in their kitchens and bathrooms. He said that semi-gloss paint is better to use where there is heat and moisture because of its higher “scrubability.” Many people use flats and satins for other rooms such as living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms and as a contrast in textures or for moldings. When you are sprucing up with fresh paint, it is a good time to try different colors. “Lots of people use light colors, and they could accent their rooms with some other colors, maybe by painting one wall in a room a dark color,” Cunningham said. “Fall is an ideal time to do sprucing up, and that could include upgrading your lighting and changing out smoke detectors as well.” If your home could use a facelift, try giving the interior a fresh coat of paint and some new window treatments. When the project is completed, you may find that you have given yourself a lift as well. H&G

It’s simple to paint a room if you follow a few easy steps:
1. Use spackling compound to fill in any holes or cracks in the walls. Smooth the patches with a damp cloth. It works as well as sanding and doesn’t create dust. 2. Prepare the room. If the walls are very dirty, you may need to wash them before painting. Move the furniture to the middle of the room or to another room. Cover everything in the room with old sheets or plastic if you plan to paint the ceiling. If you will paint only the walls, just cover the floor next to the wall with an
old plastic shower curtain. Apply masking tape or painter’s tape to woodwork that meets the wall to avoid getting paint on it. 3. Follow directions on the paint can for the best painting results. If you need to stop painting for a while and come back to it later, seal your paintbrush and roller in a plastic bag, and store them in the refrigerator for a few hours or in the freezer for a few days until you are ready to use them again. If your brush and roller are frozen, allow time for them to thaw before you resume painting. Using this method allows you to put off washing your brush and roller until after the project is complete.
