Connections & community Allied Arts director is busy meeting people and working to expand the arts in Yakima By Scott Klepach Jr.

I

t’s not that Jessica Moskwa never pictured herself in her position. She just didn’t envision herself here at this stage in her life. But Moskwa, the executive director of Allied Arts of Yakima, loves every minute of her job. “I did have intentions of going into the wine industry, said Moskwa, 29, who had applied at several places in the Yakima Valley years ago, but “nothing stuck. Instead, she landed a temporary position at Allied Arts in 2005. But JESSICA MOSKWA that job was even more temporary Allied Arts than Moskwa would have guessed when she arrived. On Moskwa’s first day, the former marketing and media coordinator announced her resignation, and Moskwa took her place. She was promoted to assistant director in 2007, and then took on her current role as executive director in 2008. “I always wanted to work in arts, on the nonprofit end, but I thought maybe as a second career, said Moskwa, who imagined herself first working in a corporate setting. “Fate conspired to get me into the art world. Even now Moskwa recognizes there is some overlap with her position and her original desire to be involved in the world of wine, because the organization promotes the link between the art and wine industries. But she quickly realized her tastes went beyond just fermented grapes. Allied Arts also sponsors a beer festival, and this exposure led Moskwa to love Northwest brews. Photos by SCOTT KLEPACH JR.

“(Kuri) talked about her hometown, and wanted to make it better through art, she said. “I met her, and I thought, this is great, I want to do this. Moskwa loves being around creative people for these reasons, and she is committed to the idea that art can build bridges between people and elevate communities.

hat a change just a few years can bring. For Moskwa, the past few years have brought changes in both scenery and career aspirations. Moskwa was born in 1981 and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, where her parents and brother still live. She headed into journalism school at Ohio University — which, she is quick to point out, is the home of the Bobcats, not the Buckeyes, a rivalry that might be lost to most people in this part of the country. In 2003, she earned a bachelor of science degree in journalism (with a Spanish minor), and then returned to Ohio University to finish her master’s of business administration degree in 2004. At that time, she didn’t see herself occupying the role of executive director for a nonprofit organization such as Allied Arts, but she began to realize that journalism wasn’t the right fit for her, either. At

N

one point she wanted to pursue magazine writing, but thought that journalism can be a grueling field and concluded she wasn’t willing to live a journalist’s lifestyle. Everything changed when she met Lillian Kuri in Cleveland. Because of Kuri, who was involved with

the nonprofit organization Cleveland Public Art, Moskwa learned that art can be transformative not only for individuals, but for entire neighborhoods. Moskwa recalls how much Kuri influenced her as she stepped out of college and entered the work force.

small business owners have to have a creative working skill set. That idea applies to her career and the careers of those she oversees. Three full-time staff members, including Moskwa, make up the staff at Allied Arts, and throughout the year there are up to a dozen part-time employees and teaching artists. But Moskwa is responsible for other duties as well, which can range from placing artists in classrooms to making sure the carpets are cleaned, or that events such as the recent Fresh Hops Ale Fest go off without a hitch. “Every day’s a new project, she said. “It’s totally soup to nuts here.

ow, miles away from her native Midwest home, Moskwa has grown fond of Yakima and the Pacific Northwest’s offerings of cultural and recreational activities. She loves to ski, which she learned when she was in Ohio, much to the surprise of local residents. But because skiing is limited to colder months, Moskwa has recently taken up cycling. She has been 1 in 2 ⠄2 marathons, and last summer she completed “Sound to Mountain, the 100-mile road ride from Seattle to Mount Si in North Bend. She has been

a mountain biker for some time, but she began training just two months prior to that event. “I needed something to get back into biking, she said, “and I had this audacious goal. Moskwa does not consider herself a visual artist, but she had been interested in arts when she was a child. Her parents were big motivators, supplying her with crayons and crafts at a young age. She dabbled in jazz, ballet and painting, but she said she never perfected any of those skills. She ran track in high school. But she didn’t focus on anything particularly arts-related at that point in her life. These experiences did amount to something, however. “I realized how formative these experiences were, and where they can take you with learning, she said. “Continued creativity is the skill for the 21st century professional. Continued from Page 2 with others drove her to spearhead the program. “I had the idea that art is a common language,” she said, “and that art is a place to start a conversation.” Film, she continued, is an easily accessible art form, and most people are interested in the medium. With all of her planning and connections, Moskwa hopes to stay connected with the community and forge new relationships, especially with younger people. “I really want to see other young professionals involved in art,” said Moskwa. She is a member of a number of local and regional organizations, including Junior League of Yakima, the Yakima Morelia Sister City Association, the downtown Rotary Club, Washington State Arts Alliance, as well as a leader of United Way’s New Leaders Yakima County program. “I want to make sure I’m visible in the community, and always have a

ow, though, the economic crunch has taken a toll on Allied Arts and the arts and education fields in general, and Moskwa fears that youth will be shortchanged in the long run.

“The lack of arts education is alarming,” she said. “I see us as a leader in both raising awareness and creating new ways for kids to experience arts.” A solution might lie within the collaborative nature of the arts community, Moskwa said. Allied Arts has joined other arts organizations such as the Larson Gallery at Yakima Valley Community College and Yakima Valley Libraries, among others, to stay above water and offer new ways of creative expression to the public. And though free social networking sites such as Facebook give users a sense of connection, Moskwa said she would argue that nothing compares to the real face-to-face contact the arts can provide. “This was happening a long time before me, but when resources are limited, collaboration becomes a part of my philosophy,” said Moskwa. “Art is about people connecting. That jives with our programming here.” WIB

Everts said looking back on her life is a difficult task now that her daughter has entered the world. “I can’t think back to my pre-baby life now, Everts said. “It’s just taken on a whole new role for me; she’s my focus now. WIB

Women in Business QUESTIONS FOR THE PROFESSIONALS: JACQUELINE PROUT What is your title/role? I have two main roles: custom framing and gallery owner. What are your primary responsibilities/duties in this position? As a custom framer, I assist customers who want to frame art works, family heirlooms and other treasures. As a gallery owner, I support local artists by featuring their works in individual and/or group shows. Local art is for sale throughout the shop, including two-dimensional pieces (paintings, drawings, photos) and threedimensional (textiles, sculpture and jewelry). How long have you owned/operated a business, or occupied your current position? I am beginning my 33rd year of business in Yakima! Why did you decide to start a business? I had worked for a Yakima frame shop for a while and loved the process of designing and building frames to showcase customers’ artwork. I

opened a small shop of my own off Lincoln Avenue and developed my personal style of collaborating with clients, businesses and artists. Did you picture yourself in this position when you were growing up? As a young woman growing up in the ’60s, I thought about marriage and family. As time went on, I realized my passion for the arts. What were your career/ life dreams as a child? I dreamed of being an artist. What drives you to run a business? What are your motivations? I find great pleasure in satisfying my customers. They bring in unframed or used-up art works. I listen to their requests and ideas then create finished products that suit their needs. Others come in my shop looking for gifts and/or personal items. I help them select pieces, made by local artists, that reflect individualism rather than mass marketing.

note Labor Department statistics do not take into account differences in experience, skill, occupation or hours worked. It’s also important to note the current income disparity between men and women represents a significant improvement from as recently as 30 years, when women’s median pay was just 60.2 percent of men’s. That figure rose rapidly between 1980 and 1990, when the disparity in median salary was 71.6 percent. Good and bad of franchises METRO NEWS SERVICE

Franchises are well-known business ventures. It is estimated that one in every 12 businesses in the United States is a franchise. One of the foremost franchise industries is fast food. An individual thinking about opening up a small business at one point may consider a franchise operation. Before doing so, it’s important to explore both sides of franchises to determine if it’s the right business model for you.

Advantages One of the first advantages to franchises is the established name. Name recognition can go a long way toward moving merchandise. A small business that is not a franchise will have to spend a good deal of time and capital establishing a solid track record and name recognition. A franchise likely already has this. Corporate marketing is another advantage. While individual franchises will do their own advertising and marketing, the corporate entity will still be doing their own work toward promoting the business’ name. This saves individual franchises money. Money can also be saved on equipment and inventory. Franchises will have bulk purchasing power because franchises typically must feature the same brands and equipment throughout their satellite locations. Buying in bulk drives down the per-unit cost of many items.

Yakima Herald-republic • yakimaherald.com

Women in Business Franchise owners will also have the benefit of other franchisee’s past experiences. Routine meetings and strategy guides can help them navigate the tricky world of small businesses. While there will be some trial and error, franchises come with a playbook of sorts that may offer guidelines and strategies for success.

Disadvantages Some of the advantages to franchises can also be disadvantages, depending on one’s perspective. For example, working under the auspices of a larger entity restricts some of the creative freedom a small business owner might want. In general, franchisees must discuss ideas and decisions for the business with the franchisors before execution. Franchisees are expected to pay dues to the franchisor. While money may be saved on other aspects of franchise ownership, the average royalty fees paid by franchisees range from 3 to 6 percent of monthly gross sales. Any business venture will require an initial investment. However, franchise investment could be considerable. The average initial franchise start-up investment is $250,000, excluding real estate. Some franchisors will also want to ensure that a potential franchisee has a considerable savings account for other expenses. Many times franchises are started by partners simply for the start-up costs involved. While some franchises have a proven track record, not every franchise will work in a particular geographic area. Researching franchises takes time. And after all of that effort and application, a potential franchisee may still be rejected by the parent company.

Explore green careers METRO NEWS SERVICE

One of the fastest-growing segments of the job market is environmentally friendly careers, or green jobs. As the number of people interested in protecting the environment continues to grow, so does an industry devoted to going green. While certain sectors may be cutting back on hiring, companies that focus around environmental issues, saving energy and green manufacturing are booming. Here are some predicted green job statistics, courtesy of Build Baby Build. • Advanced biofuels: 29,000 new jobs by 2012; 190,000 jobs by 2022 • Energy efficient infrastructure: 280,000 jobs, nearly half of which would be created in the next 12 months • Solar energy: 110,000 new jobs by the end of 2010 in the U.S., plus solar job growth of 100 percent in Canada • Overall 37 million renewable energy jobs by the year 2030, which would be 17 percent of all U.S. employment • Wind energy: 185,000 new jobs in the next 12 months Searching for green jobs is easier now than in years past. Companies

everywhere are creating positions to bridge the transition between traditional ways of doing business and new, environmentally friendly options. Anyone with a good work ethic can get into a green career, especially where a specific skill set (such as crafting solar panels) is not required. Here are some of the up-andcoming green jobs. • Land-use planners: Individuals who plan land use to reduce carbon footprints. • Green hospitality: Individuals who specialize in hotels and the travel industry that support green initiatives. • Alternative care: Many people want to go beyond traditional medicine to cure what ails them. Alternative treatments, such as the use of herbs, is quite popular, as is accupuncture treatment. • Green attorneys: Lawyers who specialize in environmental issues are in high demand. • IT professionals: Green companies need individuals to maintain computer systems, Web sites and provide employee support. New Internet databases enable individuals to search for green jobs in a convenient manner. Consider sites such as www.greencareersguide.com, www.greatgreencareers.com and www. greencareercentral.com to get started.

It’s more than just a name for restaurant owner, it’s about family By SCOTT KLEPACH JR.

M

ercedes & Family Restaurant couldn’t have opened without her. But to Mercedes Guzman, it’s not about her. In fact, as her family and customers have learned, Guzman doesn’t aspire to bask in the limelight of the success her small but busy Mexican restaurant in west Yakima has experienced. Even so, success hasn’t been easy, and Guzman said she tries to stay humble and focus instead on putting in a long, hard day of work, day after day. Rest isn’t a word she knows — or perhaps one she chooses to ignore — which is a common trait in many small business owners. But Guzman’s story reveals she is more concerned with others around her than receiving a lot of praise and attention. That is why, though her name appears first in the restaurant’s title,

GUZMAN Continued from Page 13 “She might be small, said Erik of his mother, “but holy smokes, she could work fast. Guzman was born and raised in Jalisco, a Mexican province located in the central-western portion of that country. She came to live in the United States 23 years ago, and she brought her cooking knowledge and experience with her. Guzman, 50, has worked through tough times before and after the restaurant’s opening. Her sister suffered from epilepsy, and Guzman worked to pay for her medicine. But when Guzman was diagnosed with cancer of the uterus, she had to take a leave of absence from her previous job at Morton & Sons, where she was employed for 13 years, to visit family and receive treatment in Mexico. She survived the cancer, but she was away from work for too long, so when she returned to Yakima she found herself unemployed. But she had a knack for making tamales, which garnered some community attention. She made tamales for St. Joseph’s, and she still supplies up to several thousand tamales for Catholic conventions at least every other year. Erik then persuaded her to sell tamales at Yakima’s Farmers Market. People were hooked, and they told her if she opened a restaurant, they would buy her food. “When I see customers (come in), they motivate my mood, Guzman said. “We have really good customers, repeat customers, and that kind of drives me more.

Guzman’s restaurant is still known for its tamales, but she has also started making her own style of enchiladas as well. People have implored her to supply her products through other ways, too, including the local catering business 2 Busy 2 Cook. Young Life has requested Guzman to supply her tamales at its booth at the

Central Washington State Fair in the past. Guzman also offers her own catering service, to serve up to 400 people, from her restaurant. Guzman tried to open a bigger establishment a few years back, but customers preferred the smaller, more affordable dishes her first restaurant offered, so she scaled back her focus.

Even with the single restaurant, though, Guzman is used to keeping long hours, sometimes staying at the restaurant preparing food and cleaning until late in the night and early morning hours. And she has refused to lighten her load, even when she faced an injury. Guzman broke her hand several years ago when she slipped

and fell in the restaurant, but instead of taking some time off, she continued to work with her good hand. Despite orders from the doctor to rest, she maintained her work schedule, seven days a week, with a cast. She also teaches catechism at St. Joseph’s, and every Saturday she drives to the school to hold her class. For the past 15 years, she has juggled work life with her religious studies duties. She continues to take classes and teach, and offer guidelines to others who wish to become teachers in the church. Guzman often arrives to work at 4 a.m. Saturdays to get the restaurant ready for Erik to take over, and then she leaves to get ready to teach catechism. She teaches and grades papers before heading back to the restaurant to finish her work day. “She hasn’t taken a break for years,â€? said Erik. While her steadfast faith is one of the reasons she devotes her time and energy this way, Guzman actually began teaching catechism, she said, because of her children, and especially Erik. “What can I do with him?â€? she said she had wondered she he was a young boy. â€œâ€Ś I wanted to teach (the kids) a little more about God.â€? It is this religious worldview that guides Guzman in raising her family and running her business. Despite her success, Guzman keeps herself in check, keeping things in perspective about her future. “I want to be able to make it, if God lets me,â€? she said. WIB

WOMEN IN BUSINESS QUESTIONS FOR THE PROFESSIONALS: MINA WORTHINGTON

What are your primary responsibilities/duties in this position? My primary duties include defining critical objectives, policy development, project management, staff advancement, community relations and political advocacy. How long have you occupied your current position? I have worked in the financial services industry for 21 years, with 17 of those years in the credit union industry. I have been President/CEO of Yakima Valley CU for just over 2 years. Why did you decide to be a part of this organization? I decided to join the team at Yakima Valley CU as Chief Operations Officer in 2005 because I saw the opportunity to become part of a phenomenal organization that had succeeded in carving out a special place in the “heart of its community. Did you picture yourself in this position when you were growing up? What were your career/life dreams as a child? How did they change as you grew up? Not exactly. Like many children — including my own — I pictured myself becoming a veterinarian, an astronaut, or a race car driver. I sort of “fell into my career in financial services. What drives you to run a business or organization? What are your motivations?

ďż˝ AGE: 38 ďż˝ CONTACT INFORMATION: 501 S. Fifth Ave., Yakima, 98901; 509-248-1720 ďż˝ MARRIED? Yes ďż˝ FAMILY? Two sons, ages 3 and 4 ďż˝ BUSINESS/ ORGANIZATION: Yakima Valley Credit Union ďż˝ WHAT IS YOUR TITLE/ROLE? President/CEO My primary motivation is to leave something better than it was when I found it. With Yakima Valley CU, that is a real challenge, since it was left to me in such great shape! Also, I get a lot of satisfaction from helping employees accomplish their dreams and aspirations. How much support did you need to get where you are at now? Did you receive help? My mother always told me that I could do anything or be anyone that I wanted to be. That helped to build my self-esteem and remove the perception of “barriers.â€? That is the most support anyone could ever ask for. Does someone help you to run the organization? There are currently 97 employees here. Every one of them helps me to run it. How long have you been in Yakima? What led you

Have you lived and worked outside of Yakima? How does running an organization in this area compare to running a business in other areas? (Or, have you observed differences?) The major difference between running a business here and other places where I have worked is the overwhelming sense of community. The residents of Yakima support many of our local, homegrown businesses, and I have a tremendous appreciation for those values.

How do you see this role changing/evolving over time — say, in the next five to 10 years? As this organization continues to grow and flourish financially, I can see a need to become even more involved in the industry and the multiple communities that we will serve. Running a business/organization or working for one eats up a lot of time, but what other hobbies do you have? First and foremost, I enjoy spending quality time with my husband and children. I also like to exercise, travel and cook.

Personal: Married to Jerry, 4 wonderful children (Brian, Jolie, Mark and Darcey), and 6 grandchildren. Words of Advice: Make every day count.

How has your role as a business owner/worker

What sort of advice can you offer younger generations and/or new business owners? The most important thing you can take from your experiences is to actually learn from them. WIB 42.830779.WIB/L

the evenings. I have either worked in or managed every department within a financial institution, except marketing. The experience of working full time while obtaining and paying for my formal education has had a significant impact on my work ethic and perception of the world.

What other work experiences did you bring to the table before landing this position? How have these experiences shaped your work ethic? My first job was making shakes at a burger joint when I was 15. I started working as a bank teller during my senior year of high school. From there, I worked my way up the ranks while obtaining my education in

Words of Advice: Stay true to what you really love to do & it will always shine through to the clients you treat. Thank you to my loyal and new clients!!

Did you attend college/ university? What was your major and minor? How does this field apply to what you are doing now (directly or indirectly)? Did you receive any other training? My undergraduate degree is from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, where I majored in business administration with a minor in psychology. My MBA was obtained at Loyola Marymount University. Even though the formal business education and “other training have been very relevant for me throughout my career, the most valuable training, coaching and direction has been obtained from various mentors.

T

he recession is taking its toll on millions of Americans each day. One unique sector affected by the economy is single mothers whose careers are necessary on many levels. They do what women do best ... pick themselves up, dust themselves off and start all over again!

RECESSION/These tips can help you survive recession and thrive in the future Continued from Page 18 during your severance time. It will add to your résumé and make you feel good simultaneously. These “free” services also allow you to demonstrate your strengths so you can potentially begin to work freelance and then land a fulltime job with your clients once the recession resides. 4) Utilize ALL severance offerings: Many companies these days include corporate counseling in their termination packages. Use these services to redesign your résumé. Research the possibility of utilizing company or agency offices from where you can job

search productively and at no cost by using their computers, Internet, printers, scanner, résumé paper, and business card production. Plus, these environments are great for networking with other individuals in similar career transition who can help with both emotional support and potential job leads. 5) Leverage your industry resources: Meet with the president of your industry trade organization’s local chapter so they know you in-person and your individual qualifications and goals. These contacts can be invaluable and serve as true ambassadors in

6) Network: Arrange in-person meetings with everyone you know — you never know who may have a contact worth leveraging. Offer to meet them for coffee or a drink, and always pay the bill as they are doing you a favor. Try to avoid lunches and dinners as they can get expensive quickly and chip away at the severance payments you need to manage wisely. 7) Create a budget: Be prepared for the long-haul should you not be able to land a job prior to your severance running out. Cut back immediately on all unnecessary

expenses like dining out, clothing, beauty services, and coffee shops. And make a budget line for networking expenses as these add up, but are tax deductible.

9) Don’t settle: Remember you are valuable; do not take a job in which you have no interest or if it does not pay what you are worth. Be patient and focused on

Women in Business QUESTIONS FOR THE PROFESSIONALS: JENNY SIMMONS

Jenny Simmons ■AGE: 38 ■CONTACT INFORMATION: 8308 Ahtanum Road, Yakima, 98903; 509-833-5096; www. jennymaes.com; jenny@jennymaes. com ■MARRIED? Yes ■FAMILY? Three children, agen 14, 11 and 9 ■BUSINESS/ ORGANIZATION: Jenny Mae’s GlutenFree Goodies ■WHAT IS YOUR TITLE/ROLE? Owner ■WHAT ARE YOUR pRIMARY RESpONSIBILITIES/ DUTIES IN THIS pOSITION? Head of Production and New Product Development

Why did you decide to start a business? Our family recognized the opportunity and demand for fresh baked goods free of common allergens, genetically modified ingredients, “artificial anything and simply free of ingredients we could not pronounce. After purchasing many types of bread over a four-year period, my children kindly wanted to go without. It wasn’t worth the misery of tasteless bread resembling cardboard. As a mom, bread seemed a necessity to ease the challenges of eating gluten-free. Experimenting with different ingredients and techniques produced many bread crumbs, but finally I mastered the art of baking gluten-free bread. My children loved my bread and would no longer allow me to purchase from the store. So it all began. Friends and family with the same needs began requesting my bread. I was thrilled to make their lives simply easier and provide that bread most take for granted. My kitchen grew too small, but my best friend, Kim Russell, would not allow me to stop there. She wanted me to bake for all of Yakima and found the perfect location at “Freddy’s Produce on Ahtanum Road.

were growing up? What were your career/life dreams as a child? How did they change as you grew up? Two years ago I didn’t see myself owning and operating a gluten-free bakery. As a child, my career or life dreams seemed to change as often as the seasons. Gluten-free was not in my vocabulary when I was 5 years old or 30. In fact, I never considered myself an excellent baker. Glutenfree living, however, is not a choice for our family but a necessity to live. My son’s sudden illness in 2006 and quick recovery eating gluten-

financial statements and litigation preparations to understanding customers’ daily struggles as a glutenfree diabetic to gluten-free with 10 food allergies. It is not easy, with no room for error, but a challenge I love.

What drives you to run a business? What are your motivations? I genuinely love my business and my customers. A diagnosis of celiac disease, gluten sensitivity or allergies to multiple foods can be devastating to many, but my goal is not only to provide fresh baked glutenfree bread, but also offer the emotional support they deserve. If I can provide an excellent product that encourages customers to maintain a gluten-free diet, then there are no words to describe that fulfillment. My customers are my motivators.

How do you see this role changing/evolving over time — say, in the next five to 10 years? Over the next five to 10 years “gluten-free will be a common term known by most. The medical community now estimates 30 percent to 40 percent (recently in a Good Housekeeping article) of all Americans are gluten sensitive and celiac disease common as 1 in 100 people. The gluten-free market will continue to increase exponentially, opening many opportunities for me over the next few years.

Does someone co-own the business/organization, or help you run it? All my friends and family have come together to make this happen. My friend Kim gave me no options but to open a gluten-free bakery. She was my “kick start and mentor! My mom and dad, Barb and Jim West, devoted countless time and energy into my business. They will never realize how their support softened many challenges along the way. My Aunt Diane and Aunt Mary have dedicated much time and effort. Without them, many days would have seemed physically impossible. My husband

and children are my biggest fans and support all the family challenges of starting a new business. I can’t thank Fred Brown enough for his support and advice. While running Freddy’s Produce, he finds the time in his busy schedule to help me in any way possible. How long have you been in Yakima? What led you here, or what made you decide to stay in the area? I was born and raised in this area, graduating from Selah High School in 1990. Did you attend college/ university? What was your major and minor? How does this field apply to what you are doing now (directly or indirectly)? Did you receive any other training? I 42.830019.WIB/L
