Full-court press: With starters Trimble, Kupp and Luckett back from a team that earned a fifth-place state trophy last season, the Pirates were given a No. 1 ranking in the Seattle Times’ preseason poll. Trimble is a two-time league MVP and all-state selection, Luckett has been providing double-digit scoring and rebounding for two years, and Kupp can play any position. Davis has two new faces in the backcourt with Lizotte and Gasseling, a transfer from Eisenhower.

Soto was a starter as a freshman and held his own. PG Josh Gasseling, also a starter as a freshman in ’10-11, transfered to Davis but the return of Denzel Jones puts Ike’s backcourt in good hands. Manzo owns a career scoring average of 13.6 in 68 games. Sunnyside’s youth left the team one win shy of making district last season but with so much returning experience the Grizzlies are sure to be one of the most improved teams in the league.

Full-court press: The Rams, who started three sophomores last season, are loaded with experience with the return of four starters — Strock, Peake, Cluff and Dresker — and their top five scorers. Strock, a second-team all-league pick who had back-to-back 28-point games, leads a tall, athletic front line that will be tough to contain. Kinloch’s crew turned in a solid summer and is poised for a big jump up after finishing in fifth place a season ago.

all-league players, last season’s cochamps have five — Davis with three and Chiawana with two. Even with the graduation of two of the league’s top three scorers (Justin Smith, Buddy Walters) it makes sense that Chiawana should be a challenger for the Pirates. Football standouts Miquiyah Zamora and Jordan Downing — both double-digit scorers — will lead the Riverhawks, although Downing is still recovering from a football injury. ... Look for Colter Quick to lead a Richland crew that has six varsity returnees.
CLASS 3A — Kamiakin made a 14-0 run through league play a season ago and graduated player of the year Case Rada and two other all-leaguers. But the Braves had eight underclassmen on that roster, including 6-6 scoring threat Justin Pedley. ... Kennewick has its top two scorers back in Bryce Leavitt and Reggie Clinton, and two-time allleaguer Matt Mendenhall is back to lead Southridge after a runner-up finish last season. Clinton and Eastmont’s Trea Thomas both earned all-league honors for position and defense last season. — Scott Spruill

Perez scored double digits seven times with a high of 20, and Juarez had a high of 19. Morales is the type of post player the program has lacked, but she is rehabbing a knee injury and not expected back until late in the season. WISHING ALL THE AREA ATHLETES A GREAT SEASON!
CLASS 4A — Last season’s big three — Chiawana, Richland and Moses Lake — all sent their best players on to four-year colleges so there’s significant unpredictability here. Wenatchee could make a big rise up from fourth with the return of all-leaguers Michaela George, Lexxi Hallberg and Kylee Butterbaugh. George (14.7) and Hallberg (11.0) are the league’s only returning double-digit scorers. Richland has eight varsity players back, including all-leaguers Britney Pringle and Kennedy Corrigan. Defending champ Chiawana lost a lot off its third-place state team but returns 6-1 Sadie Sparks. CLASS 3A — Kamiakin and Eastmont tied for last season’s league title at 13-1 and both had nine underclassmen. The Braves, though, went on to place fifth at state and they return player of the year Khadidja Toure and sister Sira Toure, who also earned all-league honors for her position and

Full-court press: Most of last season’s varsity roster graduated, though Strom and the athletic Craig are solid, Shavehead has potential (5.5 ppg in limited action) and last year’s JV was pretty decent. The key piece will be Balderas, who missed most of last season. A 6-5 guy with legitimate post moves is a rare commodity in the CWAC, and a healthy Balderas would be the Wolves’ go-to guy.
E LSE WHE RE IN THE CWAC Quincy made a move up into the middle of the pack and might continue that climb this season. Coach Wade Petersen has an experienced squad of nine seniors and three juniors, led by second-team all-CWAC selection Braulio Flores (8.6 ppg) and a solid nucleus of other seniors — Jacob Durfee (7.6 ppg, also a solid rebounder), Mario Martinez (9.4) and Kody Berens (6.5). The Jacks are long on athleticism and short on, well, height. ... After going a rollercoaster couple of seasons — third in state in 2010, winless last year — Ephrata figures to find itself somewhere between those two extremes. The Tigers’ five varsity returners include gifted 6-3 slasher Tanner Williams (10.1 ppg) and PG Layton Lange, and soph G Dylan Bentham can shoot the rock. But there’s not a lot of height, and 6-3 Michael Clark and 6-foot Jake Laird will have to overachieve on the boards. ... With a junior-dominated team last year, Othello might have been a year away, and this year might be that year. With 6-4 Drew Scott (12.5 ppg) pulling down nearly 10 boards a game and muscular 6-footer Tyson Mollotte and 6-1 Dustin Rodgers also pounding the boards, that will leave plenty of room for David Garza (11.5) and PG Caleb Garza (8.6) and athletic senior Jacob Tovar to score from outside the key. — Scott Sandsberry

Full-court press: Barring injuries or unforseen obstacles, the Red Devils will contend for the CWAC title. Raab’s teams always play gritty defense; Mohsenian, Hodgson, Merkle and Zimmer are a formidable nucleus of proven talent; and, in Hodgson and Zimmer they have the ability to have a power inside game.

JV Full-court press: The Bulldogs have the tallest team in the league and probably the youngest, with only three seniors and three juniors throughout the varsity and JV rosters, the rest all freshmen and sophomores. Full-court press: Hartman has plenty of reasons to be, as he says, “cautiously optimistic” — a solid group of returners led by Bersing and Wood, lots of athleticism (though not a lot of basketball-comes-first players), enough height to be able to win some rebounding wars, and a summer-league season that gave the Vikings some confidence.

East Valley’s Yasi Mohsenian averaged more than 10 points per game last year in earning first-team all-CWAC honors.
Full-court press: The Wolves took a hit when junior post Joanne Anderson (7.6 ppg) suffered a knee injury in volleyball that will cost her the entire basketball season. But Sammi Jo Blodgett is as explosive a player as there is in the league, and the Wolves always possess both a high basketball IQ and an absolute refusal to back down.
ELSEW HER E I N T HE C WAC Last year, a lot of CWAC coaches thought Ephrata might give Prosser a serious run for the league title, but the Tigers ended up barely over .500. Perhaps they were just a year away, and this is the year Ephrata steps up. The Tigers have a solid nucleus of eight seniors, led by stellar 5-6 guard Kelsey Yenney (11.9 ppg), 5-10 forward Heidi Buchert and 5-11 post Hailey Boyd. ... After graduating six members off last year’s team — including star Desiree Durfee — Quincy will have to build around the versatility of its standout pair of post-forward sisters, senior Cassidee Davis (9.1 ppg last season) and junior Aurorah Davis (6.6). The two have been impact players for the Jacks since they moved in from Illinois two years ago. Senior post Marinda Talley averaged nearly 5.0 ppg over the second half of last season. ... At Othello, the rebuilding challenge will be enormous following the graduation of Christine Kirkwood (16.9 ppg). The leading returner figures to be Alyssa Martinez, who averaged 2.8 ppg but came on strong over the latter part of 2010-2011, including a 10-point night against Wapato, until a knee injury ended her season. — Scott Sandsberry
ANDY SAWYER/Yakima Herald-Republic file
Wapato’s Sammi Jo Blodgett is the top returning scorer in the CWAC. She averaged nearly 18 points per game last season.
