From the President Today we celebrate the completion of degrees, the achievement of long awaited goals and the culmination of years of hard work and sacrifice. It is a joyous occasion, not only for our graduates, but also for their families and friends who have supported them throughout their educational journey. It is also a celebration for the excellent faculty, staff, and administration of the college who have worked to provide the highest quality education, support services, and encouragement that has enabled our graduates to succeed and to reach their full potential. Student success is central to the mission and goals of Yakima Valley College. Watching our graduates walk across the platform to receive their degrees revitalizes and inspires us all to continue in our efforts to provide quality education to the citizens of the Yakima Valley. Our 2019 graduating class, like thousands of previous YVC graduates, will go on to be lifelong achievers and leaders in our community and throughout the world. Welcome

Founded in 1928, Yakima Valley College is one of the largest providers of postsecondary education in the south central region of Washington State and has a long tradition of quality teaching and a strong commitment to student success. YVC offers a comprehensive curriculum for bachelor of applied science degrees, transfer degrees, professional and technical degrees, and basic skills instruction. As one of the 38 community and technical colleges in the state of Washington, YVC serves Kittitas, Yakima, and Klickitat counties with campuses in Yakima and Grandview and learning centers in Ellensburg, Sunnyside, and Toppenish. Today’s ceremony will include graduates from YVC’s bachelor of applied science degree and associate degree programs as well as high school students who are earning both their associates degree and high school diploma at the same time. YVC’s ceremony also includes students who have completed their certificate of achievement in one of our many areas of study. Thank you for joining us to celebrate our graduates.

Academic Procession

The commencement ceremony begins with the academic procession, a tradition dating back to the twelfth century. The processional order begins with the platform party (board, president, vice presidents and speakers), followed by the deans, faculty, the bachelor degree graduates and the associate degree graduates, and certificate students. The graduates will be primarily in two colors of gowns. The bachelor degree graduates wear black, and the associate degree and certificate of achievement graduates wear maroon. Running Start students who are graduating with their associate degree and high school diploma can choose to wear YVC’s maroon or their high school gown. The college’s administration and faculty wear gowns indicative of their academic degrees embellished with various colors depending on their discipline or area of study. In addition to the cap and gowns, you will also see some students wearing cords, medallions, and stoles which recognize outstanding academic achievement. The cords recognize honors (GPA of 3.40 to 3.84) and high honors (GPA of 3.85 or higher). Honor cords are either white (certificates) or maroon and gold (associate or bachelor’s degrees). High honor cords are either double white (certificates) or double gold (associate or bachelor’s degrees). Phi Theta Kappa members are wearing gold stoles and student government officers are wearing white stoles. Finally, two students selected for the All-Washington Academic Team are wearing their medallions.

Announcements

We ask that our guests silence cell phones. For safety reasons, keep all walkways clear. When the graduates enter the stadium, please stand during the processional. Photographs may be taken, but audience members are not allowed on the stage. There will be opportunities for photographs following the ceremony. Please stand for the recessional, then remain in your seat until all graduates have exited. If you have questions, please speak with an usher.

Commencement Speaker Mr. Ricardo Garcia

Yakima Valley College is honored to have Mr. Ricardo Garcia speak at the 90th Commencement Ceremony. Mr. Garcia was born and raised in San Diego, Texas. In 1959, soon after graduating high school, he enlisted with the U.S. Army and was assigned to a unit in South Korea. Upon completion of this assignment, he was transferred to Fort Lewis, and found himself training at the Yakima Firing Center. After completion of his army tour, he attended YVC and CWU, graduating with a BA in social work. Mr. Garcia became an activist and advocate on behalf of the valley’s farm workers. Social change and social justice was the cry of the activists during the Chicano farm worker movement. Activists were successful in establishing a chain of community-based organizations, which addressed issues of health care access, pre-school education, housing and economic development. Mr. Garcia was one of the four founders of radio station KDNA 91.9, the Spanish-language outlet that took to the airwaves in 1979. Mr. Garcia’s work as a social worker spans more than 40 years. He was the first executive secretary for the commission on Mexican American Affairs, served as the executive director of Northwest Rural Opportunities, and also was the general manager of Radio KDNA-FM. He retired in 2008.

Student Commencement Speaker Ms. Anita Valdovinos

Yakima Valley College is pleased to have graduate Anita Valdovinos deliver the student commencement speech for the class of 2019. Valdovinos has completed her associate in arts transfer degree. Ms. Valdovinos was born in Yakima, Washington. The eldest of eight siblings born to immigrant parents, Ms. Valdovinos was always encouraged to pursue education. When her parents’ divorced, she moved with her father to Texas. When she was just 15 years old, her father was deported and she decided to stay in the United States. She graduated from high school in the top 10% of her class, however, her dreams of pursuing a college degree were put on hold when she learned that she was pregnant with her first child. Ms. Valdovinos decided to return to the Yakima Valley to be near family and work. Wanting to pursue her dreams for a better education and life for her family, she enrolled at YVC in 2015. “YVC offered me resources and a support system that helped my husband and I to go to college,” she says. I have poured myself into this school and have truly come to love this college. During my time at YVC I had my third child, went through homelessness and even a house fire, but in the midst of chaos what stayed consistent was Yakima Valley College. It has prepared me for the next stage of my life as I continue my education at Central Washington University to study Zoology.” 4

Distinguished Alumnus Award

Ms. Verlynn K. Best

The Yakima Valley College Alumni Association is pleased to announce Ms. Verlynn K. Best as this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Ms. Best is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and President of the Greater Yakima Chamber of Commerce. A single mother and non-traditional student Ms. Best enrolled at Yakima Valley College, earning three degrees in 1997. “My experience at YVC was a turning point in my adult life and provided me with a quality education to pursue a career I love and I’m passionate about,” she states. Committed to making her community a better place, Ms. Best has served on the Chamber’s Board of Directors, and is currently serving in her eighth year as CEO/ President. She is a tireless advocate for local business and community interests. She has also served on the board of the Yakima Valley Visitors & Convention Bureau and is currently serving on the board of Washington Chamber of Commerce Executives. She is also a past volunteer of Habitat for Humanity and has participated in builds all over the United States.

Distinguished Service Award

Mr. Bob Berry

Yakima Valley College is honored to present Mr. Bob Berry with the 2019 Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Berry is being recognized for his contributions to help establish a partnership between YVC and Sinclair Broadcast Group. Mr. Berry has spent the better part of the last 20 years in Spanish Language broadcasting in the region. First in radio, as the managing partner of stations in Wenatchee, Moses Lake, Walla Walla, the Tri-Cities and Yakima. After selling these stations in 2008 he was hired to launch a new Univision affiliate (KUNW) and run it’s day to day operations. In 2014 he assumed the same responsibilities for KIMA and CW9. “I wanted to make a difference in my career so I turned my attention to our Hispanic community,” he says. “I wanted to provide the news and information people need to achieve the goals they have for their families. That’s why it was so important for us to partner with YVC. From Orgullo Comunitario on KUNW to the bi-weekly stories on KIMA we showcase what the best and brightest are doing, and how a strong college education propels them to success.”

Faculty Emeritus Award

Ms. Rhonda Taylor

Yakima Valley College is pleased to honor Ms. Rhonda Taylor as the 2019 Emeritus Faculty. Ms. Taylor graduated from the YVC’s Nursing Program in 1977. She then transferred to Washington State University earning and bachelor’s degree before continuing her studies at Gonzaga University, where she earned a master’s degree in Family Nurse Practitioner. She started teaching at YVC in the Nursing Program in 1989 and later served as the director of the program for over 20 years. Ms. Taylor served two Governor-appointed terms on the Washington State Nursing Commission. During that time, she chaired the committee work that resulted in the Washington State continuing competency laws for nursing practice. She was also appointed to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, and served there for 10 years. At the end of her tenure on the National Council, she was honored with the National Outstanding Contribution Award. Newly retired, Ms. Taylor and her husband Mike divide their time between Yakima and Arizona. 5

Sherrie & Daryl Parker Faculty Award

Mr. Ben Mayo

Yakima Valley College is pleased to honor Math Instructor Mr. Ben Mayo with the 2019 Sherrie & Daryl Parker Faculty Award. A life-long Yakima Valley resident, Mr. Mayo graduated from YVC before earning a bachelor’s degree in music. He spent the next few years traveling the country and working as a professional musician. In 1982 he returned to YVC and pursued a degree in civil engineering. During this time, he began tutoring in physics and realized how much he enjoyed it. He earned his teaching certificate from Central Washington University and began teaching math part-time at YVC. He later earned his master’s degree and was hired to be the full-time math instructor on YVC’s Grandview Campus, and in 1995 was hired to work on the Yakima Campus. In addition to his work inside the classroom, Mr. Mayo has also written two textbooks, which are used by the math department. A humorist, he has also written five books of puns titled, “What’s the Difference Between…?” while also developing a game based on these works.

Robert M. Leadon Excellence in Teaching Award

Ms. Kathy Laws

The Yakima Valley College Foundation is pleased to present the Robert M. Leadon Excellence in Teaching Award to Ms. Kathy Laws. An instructor in the College and Career Readiness division, Ms. Laws teaches courses in reading, writing, college prep, and transition to college. Ms. Laws grew up in the Yakima Valley, graduating from Davis High School. After working for a couple years packing fruit in a warehouse, she decided to attend YVC, taking early childhood education classes and earning her transfer degree. She had no plans to continue her studies until she was encouraged to do so by long-time YVC instructor Ellwood Crosier. She transferred to Central Washington University and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. In 1985 she was hired to work part-time at YVC’s Sunnyside Learning Center, later transitioning to teach at the Toppenish Learning Center and then in Yakima. Ms. Laws is known for her passion for students and their success, particularly as expressed in her work creating “bridge” programs to help students transition to college-level courses.

Darlene Koch Classified Employee of the Year Award

Mr. Richard Miller

The Yakima Valley College Foundation is proud to honor Mr. Richard Miller with the Darlene Koch Classified Employee of the Year Award. Miller is an Information Technology Specialist III in the Technology Services Department. Miller was born in Yakima, graduating from West Valley High School in 1981. He started his career as a maintenance technician in area nursing homes. Nearly two decades later, Miller returned to school, earning a degree in communications from Perry Technical Institute. He was hired full-time in YVC’s Technology Services department in August 1999. Since then, his position has morphed and grown with evolving technologies. Currently, Miller oversees video conferencing operations for classes on both the Yakima and Grandview campuses, conferences, and special events. He also provides audio/visual systems design and technical support for e-learning. On campus Richard is well known for his technical knowledge, helpful nature, and always going above and beyond for YVC students, faculty and staff. 6
