MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The Yakima Valley College (YVC) Foundation has enjoyed tremendous success in the 40 years since its origin. A principle reason for that success is that it has been governed by a board of quality directors and exceptional executive directors. I have served on the board since 1981 and it has been a pleasure serving with such good people. The accompanying overview, graphs and statistics detail the Foundation’s phenomenal growth. Just in the last five years the fund balance has grown by over $3,000,000. This growth enabled the awarding of nearly $600,000 for 2017-18 as compared to $400,000 in the prior year and an increase in the average scholarships from $2,500 to $3,000. Besides a favorable market greatly contributing to this growth was the largest donation ever received, $1,000,000, from the S. Daryl Parker Estate. The bequest stipulated that $150,000 be distributed at the discretion of the Foundation board. Accordingly, $100,000 was directed to the college for new bleachers and improvements to the bathrooms in Parker Faller Field, $25,000 went to Parker Youth and Sports Foundation for improvements to the Parker Faller Field, $10,000 went to the city of Yakima for improvements to Larson Park, and the remaining $15,000 went to Larson Gallery. $150,000 of the bequest went to endow the Sherrie and Daryl Parker Faculty Award. The remainder of $700,000 established a scholarship fund – 60% for academics and 40% for YVC athletes. I am very appreciative of the support of the board members, donors, the college and readers of this message. You are invited to become involved with the YVC Foundation – establish a scholarship, make a donation or perhaps become a director. Glenn Rasmussen YVC Foundation President 3

OVERVIEW The Foundation of Yakima Valley College (YVC) incorporated on July 13, 1977. At the first board meeting of the Foundation, in October of 1978, the following goals and objectives were established: 1. To provide financial assistance to students in the form of scholarships 2. To seek contributions of money, services or equipment to support YVC 3. To sponsor educational workshops and seminars for the community through the College 4. To provide funds and determine procedures that will enhance academic excellence among the faculty at YVC The first contributions made were eight trust funds totaling $120,000 transferred from the YVC Corporation and two private donations of $20,000 bringing the net worth of the Foundation to $140,000. Twelve scholarships were awarded in 1977 totaling $4,000. Over the last 40 years, the Foundation has received contributions from over 150 donors establishing perpetual endowments and cash based scholarships with a variety of criteria. Matching federal grant programs in 1996 (2 for 1 match), 2002 and 2012 (1 for 1 match) helped increase donors’ dollars giving their scholarship funds greater earning power. The current fund balance as of October 2017 is over $12 million. 200 students were awarded nearly $600,000 for 2017 . The ability to provide opportunities to needy and deserving students continues through the efforts of the Foundation and the generous support from our donors. In 1998 a matching funds program for the Washington State Exceptional Faculty Endowment Grant, enabled the YVC Foundation to help benefit instructors at YVC. The program allows them to further their education through off-campus training programs helping them to provide a better education for their students. Today, the Foundation continues its commitment to YVC and its’ students, while keeping to the core mission set forth by the first Board. If you are interested in helping in the Foundation’s mission please contact 509.574.4645 to learn more about how you can help.

DARLENE KOCH CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR AWARD

Past Award Recipients 2016 Cristy Rasmussen 2015 De’Andre Sanders 2014 Donna Fulton 2013 Debbie McBride 2012 Joaquin Macias

13

The Darlene Koch Classified Employee of the Year Award is an unrestricted monetary award. It provides recognition to a classified employee who exemplifies dedication to the mission and goals of YVC. The selection is made by the YVC Foundation Board of Directors from nominations provided by students, faculty, staff, administrators, and alumni. The 2017 recipient, pictured left, is Ms. Laura Yolo. Laura was born in San Francisco, California and moved with her family to Washington State when she was nine years old. The family spent time living in Tacoma and Pendleton, Oregon before finally settling in the Yakima Valley. She began her educational journey at YVC at the age of 18 pursuing her GED. Although life challenges prevented her from continuing her education, Laura never lost hope that one day she would earn a college degree. In 2009 she returned to YVC and earned an associate in arts degree while being named YVC’s 2011 Student Commencement Speaker. She then transferred to Central Washington University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies. This past December she completed her master’s degree in communications and leadership from Gonzaga University. Yolo began working at YVC in summer of 2011 as an hourly instructional technician for the UB Program. In 2013 when a Program Coordinator position opened in the same department, Yolo applied and was selected to fill the vacancy. In her current role, Laura works to help academically prepare low-income, first-generation high school students for college. She works with high school students from Wapato, Toppenish, Granger, and Sunnyside. She coordinates group activities, trips to conferences, and campus tours to help students understand the importance of higher education and the options available to them. She also helps students one-onone with college preparation planning and scholarship planning. In addition, she helps plan UB’s Summer Institute. A multi-week residential summer program, Yolo helps develop curriculum, serves as an interface for faculty, arranges travel for students, and coordinates food service. “For the past four-plus years I have worked with her as the ‘English instructor’ during the UB Program’s Summer Institute,” continued Koestler. “Laura’s work during the Summer Institute embodies YVC’s student-centered mission, routinely going above and beyond her ascribed job responsibilities,” he concluded.

ROBERT M. LEADON EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD The Robert M. Leadon Excellence In Teaching Award is an unrestricted monetary award. The selection is made by the YVC Foundation Board of Directors from nominations provided by students, faculty, staff, administrators, and alumni. The 2017 recipient, pictured right, is Dr. Heidi Shaw. Shaw attended Central Washington University in order to work with the chimpanzees, who were learning American Sign Language. She earned bachelor degrees in German and interdisciplinary studies: ethology, followed by a master’s degree in experimental psychology. She went on to complete her PhD in experimental psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno. Her master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation investigated different aspects of the use of American Sign Language in cross-fostered chimpanzees. In 1995 Shaw began teaching at YVC. “For the past 22 years, Dr. Shaw has provided students with opportunities to succeed at the collegiate level in psychology. Her passion for her discipline and subject matter is contagious and students find her engaging in the classroom,” stated Dean of Arts and Sciences Kerrie Cavaness. In addition to her classroom work, Shaw also offers her students the opportunity to conduct scientific research outside of the classroom. “One of the outstanding offerings that Dr. Shaw provides is her promotion of undergraduate research,” stated Psychology Instructor Tom Mount. “In her unassuming way, she goes to great lengths to provide research opportunities for students who have an interest in psychological research. She actively engages them in projects that are methodical, rigorous and intellectually stimulating,” he continued. Since 2013, Shaw has worked with YVC’s Office of Institutional Effectiveness and the Title V Grant to engage student researchers. They have helped analyze the annual fall student survey data and made recommendations to the college. “ In addition to her teaching, Shaw is an active researcher. Her work builds on past research with cross-fostered chimpanzees and sign language that was pioneered by Drs. Allen and Trixie Gardner. YVC students have participated actively in this research since 1995. This past spring, Shaw and three YVC students presented their research at a regional psychology conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.

SHERRIE & DARYL PARKER FACULTY AWARD

Past Award Recipients 2016 Lori Kunkler 2015 Martin Meister 2014 Julie Swedin 2013 Rachel Dorn 2012 Dodie Forrest

15

The Sherrie & Daryl Parker Faculty Award provides recognition to a full-time faculty member who, through extraordinary interactions and personal influence, motivates students toward greater academic and personal achievement. The selection is made by committee from nominations submitted by students. The 2017 recipient, pictured left, is Ms. Shannon Hopkins. Hopkins was raised in Switzerland and Ireland. Finding the Irish school system difficult, Hopkins did not complete high school. She then spent the next two years training and conditioning horses. Wanting to continue her education, she decided to move to Washington State and attend Tacoma Community College, where she wrote and edited the college newspaper. After transferring to The Evergreen State College, where she received her bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, she worked as a journalist and editor for a weekly newspaper. In 1991 she returned to school and attended Central Washington University (CWU). While at CWU she was hired as a teaching assistant which gave her a stipend, allowing her to earn a master’s degree without incurring any debt. When a full-time position opened up in YVC’s English department, Hopkins applied and was hired to fill the position. She has worked for the college for the past 26 years, teaching everything from English 90T through English 203 and various literature and creative writing courses. “I love teaching at YVC,” stated Hopkins. “I appreciate my colleagues, who are diverse, talented and supportive in every way, and I enjoy and learn from my students, many of whom battle extraordinary odds to be here. I count myself lucky to have found such an inspiring job,” she continued. She has had a remarkable impact on her students. “I found Shannon Hopkins to be an amazing teacher,” stated student Alisha McNeil. “I took her class last fall, which was my first quarter at YVC. In addition to trying to understand how college worked, I had also never taken a hybrid class before and was tasked with the challenge of figuring out how it operated. Consequently, I had dozens of questions, and nearly every time after class, myself and other students would remain in the classroom to talk with her about all the questions we had. She was always cheerful and happy to teach me not only what we needed to know to pass the class, but also any other relevant and interesting information that would help us in the future,” she continued.

Ann Miller is a new donor establishing the Dale & Ann Miller Dental Hygiene Scholarship. She stated that the dental hygiene program has provided at least 12 great employees for the family dental practice started by her husband and continues with her son Dale and wife, Victoria.
