YVCC is an AA/ EEO Institution.
Message from the President I am honored to be serving as president of the YVCC Foundation. I have been a director of the Foundation since 1981 and president for the last three years. I have a real soft spot for YVCC since I graduated from the college in 1955, played varsity basketball for two years under Coach Sherar and met my wife to be. It is gratifying to be able to help YVCC and its students fulfill their mission and goals by working through the Foundation. In the 35 years since the Foundation was formed its assets have grown from an initial$140,000 to over $8,000,000. Some 4,400 scholarships totaling more than $2.8 million have been awarded in those 35 years. This past year we had 300 applicants for Glenn Rasmussen scholarships. 145 were awarded for $260,000. Many of those applicants that did not receive scholarships were very deserving but due to the depressed market and related restrictions on what may be awarded from some of our federal grants, we were unable to provide scholarships to them. Hopefully the economy will improve and our investments will increase in value sufficiently so that in the future we may award scholarships to all deserving students that apply. Glenn Rasmussen YVCC Foundation President

Purpose Yakima Valley Community College Foundation exists to provide support to Yakima Valley Community College. Since its inception in 1977 the Foundation has provided many students with scholarships and financial assistance. Each year the Foundation awards scholarships totaling approximately $200,000 which provide many deserving students an opportunity to attain a higher education who otherwise would not have access to college. The Foundation relies on alumni, friends and concerned citizens to underwrite its scholarship programs. The ability to provide opportunities to needy and deserving students can only continue through the efforts of the Foundation and your generous support. Please continue your support if you are currently a benefactor. If you are not, will you help the Foundation with your donation? For more information call 574.4645.
In 1977, eight trust funds totalling $120,000 were transferred from the Yakima Valley College Corporation to the YVCC Foundation. In addition, the Foundation received two contributions totaling $20,000, bringing the net worth to $140,000. The YVCC Foundation grew financially under the Executive Direction of Milton G. Martin from $140,000 in 1977 to $777,028 in 1986 when Mr. Martin retired. Under the leadership of Executive Director Paul Strater there was steady growth from 1986 to 1992 when the Foundation reached $1,211,790. In addition during this time Paul served as Human Resource Director for YVCC. In 1992, the Board of Directors named Darlene Koch as Executive Director for the Foundation. With opportunities to receive matching grant funds from the Department of Education, the Foundation increased the endowed scholarship by $2,205,000 and the Exceptional Teaching Endowment to $700,000. The Foundation was able to take advantage of the grants due to community support. In the fall of 2010, after the retirement of Darlene Koch, Stacey Kautz was named as the Executive Director. Kautz began working with the Foundation in 2000 as an administrative assistant. Today the net worth of the Foundation is in excess of $8,000,000.

Donor: Millie Stenehjem Millie Stenehjem taught full-time at YVCC for 27 years and then continued to teach parttime until she retired in 2002. During her tenure she taught speech, drama, and humanities classes. “I was interested in becoming a teacher because I felt that teachers can make a difference,” stated Millie Stenehjem. In addition to her teaching schedule, Millie also made time to be involved in many other aspects of campus as well as the Yakima community. Many of which she continues today. She currently serves as the President for YVCC’s Alumni Association, a position she has held for over ten years. Wanting to continue her service to YVCC’s students, Stenehjem established the Stenehjem Family scholarship through the YVCC Foundation. “I have always been interested in helping students,” stated Stenehjem. “I received scholarships while in college and understand how important they are for students,” continued Stenehjem. To help grow her scholarship fund, she participated in both the Title V in 2002-2003 and the Title V2 in 2007-2008 matching grants. Casey & Millie Stenehjem
YVCC’s Alumni Association is looking for advisory board members. Board members must be at least 18 years of age, have attended or worked at YVCC, and be willing to make a two-year commitment. Individuals related to someone who has attended or worked at YVCC are also eligible. For more information contact Deborah Wilson at 509.574.1932 or dwison@yvcc.edu.
Alumni: Stefanie Menard Stefanie Menard began attending YVCC in the 2003 and quickly became a familiar face on campus working in the Community Relations Office as a work-study. Like many YVCC students, she also balanced a part-time job off-campus, carried a full course load and made time for family and friends. Through her on-campus and off-campus work and through the generous support from the YVCC Foundation Stefanie was able to complete her associates degree while remaining debt-free. “The financial support I received from the YVCC Foundation was a huge help to me as a student,” stated Stefanie Menard. “I can’t express how much I appreciate donors for establishing scholarships to help students like me, realize their dreams of pursuing college degrees and accomplishing our goals,” she concluded. Following her associate of arts transfer degree, she began attending Central Washington University. She graduated in December of 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and shortly after accepted a part-time position Stefanie Menard in YVCC’s Community Relations Office. After a successful interview process, Menard permanently joined YVCC as a Communication Consultant I in 2007.

Exceptional Faculty Award Program In May and August of 1999 the YVCC Foundation approved $100,000 in matching funds for an Exceptional Faculty Awards Program. An additional $50,000 was approved in April 2001. In subsequent years the Foundation approved another $200,000 and received matching funds for that as well from the State Board of Technical and Community Colleges (SBTCC) for a total of $700,000. Today the fund is worth in excess of $800,000. All funds generated by and through this program shall be credited to the Exceptional Faculty Local Endowment Trust Fund, from which only the earnings may be expended. Currently the awards have been $20,000 yearly to be used for projects or professional development activities that advance the college’s mission and goals. Proposals for awards will be accepted by division deans on an ongoing basis and will be forwarded to the Vice President for Instruction and Student Services and President for approval in collaboration with the Foundation Executive Director.
Robert M. Leadon Excellence in Teaching Award A small portion of the available funds from the Exceptional Faculty Endowment are awarded by the YVCC Foundation for the R.M. Leadon Excellence in Teaching Award. The award was established by the Velikanje Law Firm in memory of Robert M. Leadon, a Foundation Director who died in 1986. He was well known for his commitment to excellence in teaching as a part-time instructor at YVCC. The Foundation solicits nomination from students, faculty and staff yearly for who they consider to be outstanding full time instructors. The Foundation’s Awards Committee then meets and decides the best candidate for the award. The recipient receives a monetary award with recognition at commencement each year.
Darlene Koch Classified Employee of the Year Award In 1989 former Vice President of Administrative Services and prior Executive Director of the Foundation, Darlene Koch, established the Darlene Koch Classified Employee of the Year Award. As VP for the college Darlene worked closely with the classified staff and wanted to give recognition for their hard work. She believed that without the classified staff the college couldn’t function properly. Nominations are given to the Foundation yearly from staff and faculty for outstanding work by classified employees. They are chosen by the YVCC Foundation Awards Committee yearly and the recipients are given a monetary award and recognition at commencement.
Message from Executive Director I began working for the YVCC Foundation in January of 2000. At this time, I had two quarters remaining before I would earn my Associate of Applied Science degree in Legal Office Assistant. Following my degree I had thought that I would pursue a career in this field. However, my advisor and instructor, Audrey Wedin, introduced me to YVCC Foundation Executive Director Darlene Koch and I was hired as her assistant. During the next 10 years Darlene and I worked closely together and I learned a great deal from her. Upon her retirement in March of 2010, I was made Interim Executive Director and was hired permanently 6 months later. My time with the Foundation has been such a privilege. I have had the opportunity to work with such a wonderful group of volunteers that make Stacey Kautz up the Board of Directors of the Foundation. They gather every month for board meetings and work to help accomplish the Foundation’s mission of supporting student success. In addition, from March through May they rate approximately 300 applications of students applying for scholarships. This is a huge undertaking and it takes a lot of time and thought. Of course the Foundation wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the generous support of our donors. Their donations help students achieve their goal of receiving an education to better their lives as well as their families’ lives. It is always so inspirational to me when people want to help others and so appreciated by the Foundation and the students they help. Finally, it has been such a joy for me to watch the students who receive scholarships achieve their goals and go on to become what they dreamed of being. Knowing that the place where I work has such an impact on the lives of others leaves me so humbled. It has an continues to be such a blessing to be a part of this organization. Thank you for all of your support.
