CARES Act Funding Awarded to Students
This spring YVC was excited to be awarded funds through the CARES Act. The CARES Act is federal legislation that provides a variety of financial support to individuals and businesses affected by the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) pandemic. One part of this federal program allocates money to Yakima Valley College, and a portion of that allocation can be awarded to students who are experiencing financial expenses because of the campus disruption in operations due to the coronavirus.
The total awards disbursed for spring and summer, including institutional funds for WASFA students is $766,590 to a total of 1,872 students.
"CARES Emergency Funds certainly helped students during a significant time of need," stated Financial Aid Director Oscar Verduzco. "Having funds go directly to students allowed them to address whatever their immediate need was. We will continue to award CARES Emergency funds to students who enroll through summer and fall quarters while funds remain available," he continued. YVC Foundation Awards Annual Scholarships This July marked the 23 rd year the Foundation has awarded scholarships to YVC students. In total, $664,000 in scholarships funds were distributed for the 2020-2021 academic year. In all, 220 students received scholarship awards, with an average of $3,000 for most students. Since 1977, the YVC Foundation has worked to provide financial support to students. Starting with $140,000 from ten donors, the Foundation’s endowment has grown exponentially to over $12,000,000 from 150 donors. In its 40-year history, the Foundation has awarded more than 5,000 scholarships to students, totaling more than $5.8 million.
