Take it easy.

It sounds so simple, so why is it sometimes so hard? Our jobs, families, friends, cell phones and computers all vie for our attention, and fun and relaxation get pushed to the bottom of our to-do lists. And when we do find time to get away, we often find ourselves in places that are neither affordable nor approachable. But here in the Yakima Valley, taking it easy is, well, easy. With more than 90 wineries, our sun-soaked Valley is best known as one of the largest wine-producing regions in the country, but our free-spirited community is also renowned for its friendly merchants, bounty of agricultural crops, rich cultural heritage, affordable attractions and lodgings, and laid-back approach to life. You’ll find diversity in every aspect of your visit, from the rich, cultural heritage of the Yakama Nation and the region’s Hispanic community to the myriad of outdoor recreational opportunities, such as fly-fishing, boating, camping and hiking. When it comes to dining, choose from fine restaurants, casual cafés or authentic roadside taquerias. At just two to three leisurely hours from Seattle, Spokane or Portland, getting to the Yakima Valley is easy. And with so many wines, fruits and vegetables to sample, tasting the Yakima Valley is easy too. The hotels are affordable and many local attractions are free or inexpensive, so making room in your budget is also a snap. When it comes right down to it, there’s nothing hard about visiting the Yakima Valley -- except maybe leaving!

YAKIMA VALLEY

Wineries

A Premium Experience

Get away to the Yakima Valley for a wine flight you’ll never forget. The best way to sample a variety of wines at your favorite wine bar or restaurant is to order a flight. And the best way to soak up a balanced blend of viticultural experiences is to escape to the Yakima Valley. In this sunny wine country region, you’ll find friendly tasting rooms, premium boutique wineries, picturesque vineyards and charming inns. The Yakima Valley Appellation is the State’s oldest and largest wine-growing region, cultivating more than 12,000 acres of grapes and producing more than one-third of all Washington wine. More than 70 wineries craft over 30 different types of wine, from Syrah to Sauvignon Blanc to Merlot to Mourvèdre. But the region’s impact and influence on the wine industry hasn’t gone to its head. The Yakima Valley remains one of the friendliest, most affordable and laid-back destinations in the State. Discovering the Valley is a little like finding a four-star restaurant where jeans and flip-flops are not just tolerated, but encouraged! And the Valley’s approachability is outshined only by the diversity of its wine-themed delights. Choose a walking tour of tasting rooms in downtown Yakima, a leisurely drive from vineyard to pretty vineyard in and around Wapato and Zillah, a stroll through urbane tasting rooms in Prosser or rest easy overnight in a romantic wine-country inn. If you’re staying in Yakima, begin your wine-country tour at one of downtown’s bustling tasting rooms. When live music is featured, the tasting rooms become the center of downtown nightlife. West of Yakima, the newest AVA, Naches Heights, is home to wineries with spectacular views of the Valley and tranquil picnic areas. 6

Friends of the Vine Rattlesnake Hills Wine Trail PO Box 1825 • Zillah, WA 98953 888.375.7498 • rattlesnakehills.com

The community of Prosser offers a different, though no less satisfying, wine tasting experience. More than 25 contemporary tasting rooms allow you to enjoy a whirlwind wine tour in just a few hours -- and most of them are free. You’ll find every varietal under the sun, and something else you’re sure to appreciate -- a complete lack of pretension. Every day is a good day to visit Yakima Valley wine country, but the excursion is even more enchanting during one of the region’s wine-themed celebrations. At Red Wine & Chocolate over Presidents’ Day weekend (and close to Valentine’s Day), chocolate lovers and wine devotees come together to enjoy pairings of creamy confections and rich red wines. At Spring Barrel Tasting, which takes place the last full weekend in April, you’ll have the opportunity to sample wine straight from the barrel and stake a claim to the finished product before it’s even bottled. During Thanksgiving in Wine Country, the region’s wineries invite enthusiasts to celebrate the season of plenty, which is especially fitting in this bountiful agricultural Valley. For the adventurous taster, try a wine tour by horseback, a delightful way to meander between tasting rooms. Soak up the sun and aromas of the farmland as you ride to the next “wining hole.” Your steed will give you an up-close and personal tour of the vineyards and orchards. To continue with your Wild West experience, bunk down in a luxury teepee for the night on a working farm with extraordinary views of the Yakima Valley landscape.

WINERIES

In the Rattlesnake Hills that stretch from Wapato to Zillah are numerous lovely vineyards where you can sample wines right at the source. Your host is often the winemaker or a family member, who is happy to discuss the distinctions between each grape, harvest or bottling. Pick half a dozen vineyards to visit, pack a picnic and spend a leisurely day among the grapes.

Our rich history... Rattlesnake Hills is located in the northern most portion of the Yakima Valley AVA, 17 miles southeast of Yakima, Washington. With a dry, sunny climate and warm summer days and cool nights, this area is a proven winner for wine grapes. The soils developed from ancient ice and rock flows combining with volcanic sediments creating a superior growing region for our vineyards. Rattlesnake Hills are aptly named for the long rolling, dry hills flowing from West to East, ringing the area with picturesque views of the snow capped Eastern Cascade Mountains and tiny hamlets settled in the mid-1850’s. Melting snow diverted into irrigation canals provide water for not only wine grapes but all the fruits and vegetables that find their way to dining tables all over the world. Vineyards began cropping up in the mid 1970’s and this trend is still occurring today. Many vineyards grow top-notch grapes, producing wines garnering not only local and national acclaim but also international attention.

YAKIMA VALLEY

Spirits & Hops Trail 78% of the Hops in the United States are Grown in the Yakima Valley There’s not too many places where a person can taste the actual ingredients and compare them to the results of the spirits and beer making processes. Tasting at the source is a unique experience that the Yakima Valley’s breweries and distilleries provide visitors. The ingredients are typically grown right outside the production room door, bringing a special ambiance to the flavor and intricate details of the craft beverages. The creators of these flavorful liquids are usually part of the families that cultivate the hops and fruit. Multiple generations tending the same crop year after year instills an innate knowledge of the growing process and the different qualities of each varietal. This knowledge allows them to utilize the best quality ingredients at the peak of their life to create a superb product. All of these beverages have one thing in common, they are literally crafted from the earth to the table in the Yakima Valley. Yakima Valley has some of the best growing conditions in Washington State, producing approximately 78% of the nation’s hops for breweries along with worldrenowned fruits for cideries and distilleries. Visiting these establishments is like taking a class in agriculture. Proprietors enjoy sharing the details of the Valley’s volcanic soils, elaborate irrigation systems and other growing practices. Nowhere is this more evident than at the newly opened craft brewery Bale Breaker Brewing Company. Started in 2013 by fourth-generation hop farmers, Bale Breaker Brewing focuses on handcrafted ales that showcase the world-class hops grown in Yakima Valley. 16

SPIRITS & HOPS The brewery is surrounded by hop fields and visitors can have the ultimate sensory experience by seeing, smelling and touching the hops on the vine. With names like Field 41 and Top Cutter, the brews also relfect their hop heritage. Snipes Mountain located in Sunnyside, makes handcrafted, small batches of ales using a blend of traditional and modern brewing methods. They feature many varieties of locally grown Yakima Valley hops balanced with a blend of Northwest and European malts. The use of quality ingredients and a passion for beer results in a fresh, unique, full-flavored beer. The inspiration behind Tieton Cider Works is the love of land, food and drink by a third generation apple growing family. They believe the ciders they make are a reflection of the harvest, fruit, and place it is grown. The existing infrastructure in the Valley provides many advantages as providing fresh ingredients for seasonal ciders. Glacier Basin Distillery, the first craft distillery in Yakima, makes premium brandies using locally grown fruit from their location at Gilbert Orchards’ Hackett Ranch. They proudly share the Yakima Valley’s agricultural bounty through fine spirits.

YAKIMA VALLEY

Attractions

Come for the wine and the fresh produce, but expect the unexpected. When you visit the Yakima Valley, there are a few things you expect to find. Award-winning wines, for instance, and farm-fresh fruits and vegetables. Exhilarating recreational opportunities and museums devoted to the region’s cultural influences. But it’s what you might not expect that makes the Yakima Valley such a surprisingly satisfying destination. In a nutshell, we just don’t take ourselves too seriously. We’re proud of what we produce, but we don’t let it go to our heads. In fact, we’re just as excited about some of our more curious attractions -- like the dinosaur statues in Granger or the Teapot Dome in Zillah -- as we are of our spectacular wineries and great farms. We love it when visitors sing our praises, but we’re just as delighted when we can make them laugh. The Yakima Valley invites visitors to dip their toes into a little nostalgia, a little Americana and a whole lot of fun. It is home to some captivating attractions you won’t find anywhere else in the State.

The Central Washington State Fair

There’s nothing more American than a fair. Nowhere else can you fill up on fried foods, great games, live music and exciting rides. Here in the Yakima Valley, we have a pretty darn good one that takes place in late September at State Fair Park, on Fair Avenue just off I-82. The State’s official fair since the late 1890’s, the Central Washington State Fair has retained all of the charm of those early expositions. Many of its participants and exhibitors live, farm and raise their animals right here in the Yakima Valley. It is one of the best annual displays of agriculture anywhere in the State. The Dinosaurs of Granger

The tiny town of Granger has a gigantic theme: “Where the dinosaurs roam.” The slogan was reportedly inspired by the discovery in 1958 of mastodon bones at a mine once owned by the Granger Clay Co. (Never mind that mastodons are not technically dinosaurs.) The town is dotted with statues of dinosaurs, which make a delightful detour along State Route 22.

The Murals of Toppenish

This historic community in the Yakima Valley has an Old West feel, Native American traditions and an easily apparent artistic streak that quite literally had local artists climbing the walls. “The City of Murals” boasts more than 70 life-size paintings that depict farming, aviation, railroading, rodeos and numerous other historical landscapes. Wander through town on your own or enjoy the murals from a mule-powered wagon tour. Placards posted near each scene offer historical details. Mural in a Day, which takes place the first Saturday in June, artists arm themselves with paint brushes and participate in the creation of a huge communal mural.

The Teapot Dome of Zillah

The Teapot Dome was built in 1922, when a bribery scandal over Wyoming oil fields rocked President Warren G. Harding’s administration. It used to be a service station, and is now one of those quintessential roadside attractions that you don’t really have to “get,” but you definitely have to photograph. The newly renovated teapot is now serving as Zillah’s visitor center in the center of town.

The Trolleys of Downtown Yakima

It’ll take you more than half an hour to travel two blocks and back, but your conductor will know more about trolley cars and Yakima’s history than anyone else you’ll meet during your stay. The ride is a glimpse into the past, but the refurbished streetcars feature ingenious seats that ensure you’re always facing forward.

American H

History & Culture There’s no better way to appreciate the present than to delve a little deeper into the past. Housed in a former Toppenish creamery, the American Hop Museum features murals, displays, photos and implements that trace the history of the perennial vine from the 1500s to today. The museum is open May 1 through Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Tours are available, but must be scheduled in advance. Central Washington Agricultural Museum

A magnet for farming and history buffs, the 15-acre Central Washington Agricultural Museum is located in Union Gap. Fort Simcoe State Park

Fort Simcoe is one of the most-visited historical sites in the Yakima Valley and a rich source of Native American and military history. The Fort was established in the 1850s to maintain peace between the settlers and the region’s native inhabitants. When it was no longer used by the military, it became the first home of the Yakama Indian Agency and a school for Native American children. The 200-acre day-use park is located 30 miles west of Toppenish on Fort Simcoe Road. It is open from 6:30 a.m. to dusk, during summer, and closed November 31 through May.

Yakima Area Arboretum

Nurturing thousands of plants since 1967, the Yakima Area Arboretum is not only open year-round, it’s free! Wind your way through more than 2,000 species of native and exotic plants from around the world, including one of the region’s few Japanese gardens. The Jewett Interpretive Center offers a great location for small meetings, as well as a gift shop and library. The Arboretum is open daily from dawn to dusk. Yakima Valley Museum Situated on the edge of beautiful Franklin Park, the 65,000-square-foot Yakima Valley Museum explores every aspect of Yakima Valley heritage; from its natural history to American Indian culture, to pioneer and early city life, to the roots and development of the Valley’s fruit industry. The museum houses over 38,000 objects, and more than 40,000 documents and photographs. Aficionados of early transportation will be drawn to the incredible exhibit of horse-drawn vehicles and legal eagles will enjoy the reconstruction of the Washington, D.C. office of Yakima native and Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas. Particularly colorful are the museum’s whimsical retro neon signs and the extensive collection of fruit crate labels. Learning can be fun in the Children’s Underground Center at the museum. Farm Fresh Fun Eating local is a snap when you’re surrounded by farms and orchards. The bountiful Yakima Valley is a sunny region rich with orchards, farms and vineyards where it’s never been easier to eat local. More than 40 commercial crops are grown in the Yakima Valley, which enjoys sunshine 300 days a year. Farm-fresh produce is within reach almost year-round, from asparagus in April to apples and potatoes in November. Some summer months are particularly fruitful, like July, which tempts with just-picked apricots, green beans, blueberries, corn, nectarines and squash. Nowhere else in the State can you feast on food so close to where it was grown. You might say that in the Valley, the source of your next meal is just a stone-fruit’s throw away. And a trip to a familyowned local farm beats a visit to the grocery store any day. If you only have eyes for organic, look no further than the Yakima Valley. You’ll find many of these organic producers at weekly and weekend farmers markets in Ellensburg, Goldendale, Prosser, Selah, Sunnyside and Yakima. Visit one of these seasonal open-air bazaars and you’ll have a unique opportunity to meet the friendly farmers who grow your food. They’ll not only greet you warmly and ply you with samples, they’ll also happily share cooking tips and introduce you to new varieties of fruits and vegetables. Even in the winter months when the fields are quiet, you can celebrate the region’s agricultural industry by exploring its history. Several Yakima Valley museums and attractions are dedicated to farming and food production, such as the Central Washington Agricultural Museum in Union Gap, the Yakima Valley Museum in Yakima and the American Hop Museum in Toppenish. The Yakima Valley is one of those rare destinations where “local flavor” can be experienced quite literally.

YAKIMA VALLEY

Outdoor Adventure Serene to spine tingling, there are plenty of ways to answer the call of the wild. Yakima Valley Outdoor Adventure

In the Yakima Valley, weather and topography team up to create the perfect conditions for outdoor adventure. Weather in the Valley is moderate during the spring and fall, crisp and cold in the winter, and hot and dry in the summer, and no matter what the season, there’s a good chance the sun will be shining. Spectacular mountain passes, deep blue lakes, rushing rivers and pretty meadows provide a wealth of exhilarating recreational opportunities. For the adventurous, there is skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, rock climbing and river rafting, alongside the more serene pursuits of horseback riding, hiking and golfing.

Bicycling

From spectacular views to challenging climbs, the Yakima Valley has much to offer cycling enthusiasts. Elite riders will enjoy the grades west of Yakima from Eschbach Park to Naches Heights and Lake Wenas. If you’re looking for a less strenuous, but no less breathtaking trip, venture to the Yakima River Canyon, where one day each May, traffic is restricted while riders of all ages and abilities participate in the Your Canyon for a Day Bike Tour. Those who wish to blend their passion for cycling with the bounty of the Valley can take a ride through orchards and vineyards. The lower Yakima Valley features many wineries that can be toured by bicycle as well as vehicle. Each September, the Wine Country Trek winds from Yakima to Prosser for the Great Prosser Balloon Rally.

Yakima River

Exploring the Yakima Greenway

The Yakima Greenway is comprised of 3,600 acres of lush vegetation and a 10-mile pathway that follows the Yakima River and attracts walkers, bicyclists, inline skaters, runners, picnickers and families to its parks, shady nooks, lakes and playgrounds. The protected, natural greenbelt includes three parks, two fishing lakes, two rivers and four river access landings.

Fishing, Hiking and Horseback Riding

There are numerous trailheads throughout the Yakima Valley for hikers and equestrians of all skill levels, as well as access to fishing, hunting and exploring the high lakes, mountain meadows and countless streams. Swimming, boating, fishing and horseback riding are all available at nearby Bumping Lake (SR 410) and Rimrock Lake (Hwy 12). The Yakima River is a classic western trout stream and fly fishing has become increasingly popular in recent years. The riffles and pools provide great places for prize rainbows to hide and feed. Prime times for fishing are September through November and in the spring, when flows are highly variable and a wide variety of insect hatches provide excellent angling.

Anglers must release all trout on this river, and are restricted to artificial flies or lures with a barbless hook. There are many local outfitters who can provide guided outings on the river and help to ensure that your first experience on the fantastic Yakima River is a memorable one.

Golfing

Nestled in an orchard in west Yakima, Apple Tree Resort is the region’s finest golfing destination, widely known for its signature 17th hole, a par-3 apple-shaped island. Public golfing is also available at River Ridge Golf Course in Selah, Sun Tides Golf Course in Gleed; Westwood and Fisher courses in Yakima, and Mount Adams Golf Course in Toppenish.

Recreation on the Yakima River and in the Yakima River Canyon

During the summer months, there isn’t a more relaxing way to soak up the beauty of the Valley than a gentle, 11-mile float down the Yakima River. Motorized watercraft are prohibited on the river, except between the Roza Recreational Site and Roza Dam, which controls irrigation for 72,000 irrigated acres downstream. Rill Adventures on the Old Thorp Highway can outfit you with rafting, rowing and fishing gear, as well as picnic lunches, ice chests and dry bags. The company also offers kayaking lessons, shuttle service and full-moon floats June through August. A drive down the Yakima Canyon Road (SR 821), which connects I-90 and I-82, is a breathtaking journey dotted with wildlife. Along this designated scenic route you’ll find plenty to pass the time, including fishing, easy river rafting and camping. Follow the meandering river as it sometimes slices between basalt cliffs formed by centuries-old upheavals. It’s thought that the Yakima River predates those stony ramparts, once flowing across a relatively flat landscape. As rock ridges rose, river erosion equaled the uplift, cutting a steep, narrow gorge. As you drift, drive or bicycle by, you can see the basalt layers in valley walls that once formed part of one of the largest lava fields in the world, said to have covered more than 200,000 square miles in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

36

Yakima River Canyo

n

The canyon attracts bald eagles, especially in winter, as well as 21 raptor species and birds of every variety, which flock to the numerous mini-climates and vegetation types found here. You’re also likely to spot river otters, coyotes, cougars, bears and deer.

Rock Climbing

The Yakima Valley is home to the Tieton River area, which is accessible from White Pass (Hwy 12) and offers excellent traditional and sport climbing for all skill levels. The volcanic rock was shaped by lava flows that created columns of Andesite, a form of basalt that is unique to the region.

e

National forest and wildlife viewing, lakes, streams, rivers, skiing, hiking and beautiful agricultural settings transport you to the great outdoors.. Skiing, Snowboarding and Mountain Pursuits

Just 40 minutes from Yakima are two spectacular mountain passes: White Pass and Chinook Pass. Both provide beautiful scenic drives, access to the Pacific Crest Trail, and numerous opportunities for hiking, fishing, mountain-biking and nature photography. The White Pass Ski Area has excellent Alpine and Nordic facilities and even offers a number of summer activities at the White Pass Village Inn, including bird watching, fishing and swimming. Alpine skiing and snowboard enthusiasts will revel in the newly expanded ski area and additional 767 acres of terrain as well as two more quad chair lifts and a 3,000 square-foot midmountain lodge.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE

Apple Tree Golf Cours

White-Water Rafting on the Tieton River

Every September, Pacific Northwest white-water enthusiasts gear up for one of the State’s most invigorating rafting trips. The Yakima Valley Flip Flop is an annual event that takes advantage of the manipulation of the Tieton River for irrigation. A torrent of water is released from Rimrock Lake down to the Tieton River and into the Naches River, more than doubling the river’s normal flow to 2,500 cubic feet and creating a fast-paced intermediate rafting run. Osprey Rafting Co. provides white water trips complete with lunch or dinner. Runs fill up quickly, so call early for reservations.

Yakima Sportsman State Park

Recreational vehicle owners love this destination for its spacious camping sites, plentiful shade trees and access to the Yakima River. A fishing pond, hiking trails, playgrounds, covered picnic areas and sandy volleyball courts are also available at this beautiful state park, which hosts informational evening programs during the summer.

Fullbright Park and the Ahtanum Youth Park are popular destinations unto themselves. Fullbright Park is the perfect location for family picnics, dog owners and attending events. There’s a large playground for kids, a dog area where pooches can fetch and roam, and big grassy fields where antique truck buffs can gather for the annual Antique Truck show every May. Ahtanum Youth Park is seventy-four acres of beautiful trees and grassy areas offering two rental buildings, numerous picnic areas and shelters. The park also includes an equine riding arena and BMX track. Fun annual festivals allow residents and visitors to dip their toes in Union Gap’s rich history. Old Town Days takes place in June with a parade, Civil War Re-enactment, and vendors while the Central Washington Antique Farm Exposition is held in August. In December, the city throws a huge party known as the Union Gap Old Fashioned Holiday Parade and Celebration. The whole family will enjoy the lighted implement parade and seasonal festivities. Zillah, a charming family-friendly community of approximately 3,100 residents, lies just on the outskirts of the Rattlesnake Hills American Viticultural Area. Surrounded by vineyards and orchards, this agricultural area offers a peaceful sojourn from the rush and hustle of city living. Wineries, produce stands and glamping opportunities are hidden among the many acres of farmland surrounding the town.

December 6th

Catch the shopping bug for unique gifts at Sister Sister and Cowgirl Bling and don’t forget to take a peek at the 16 foot tall 100 year old stained glass windows in The Old Warehouse Restaurant and Lounge. Zillah has two fantastic Mexican food restaurants. El Porton and El Ranchito will awaken your taste buds and fill your stomach for the trip back home. If you want to extend your visit, rough it in a luxury teepee at Cherry Wood Bed, Breakfast and Barn or stay at the Vintage Valley Inn and relax on the sun deck or indoor pool. American Viticultural Area (AVA)

While meandering through the town you may come across an odd looking building shaped like a teapot. In fact, this historical landmark built in 1922 was handcrafted and inspired by the Harding Administration Teapot Dome Scandal. It has been moved into the city limits to be utilized as Zillah’s Visitor Center. In the Springtime Zillah hosts several community events. Spring Fling takes place in April and Zillah’s Community Days are celebrated in May with assorted family activities. Zillah Chamber of Commerce • P.O. WHERE THE WEST STILL LIVES

City of Toppenish If you have a passion for history, a taste for fresh fruits and vegetables, and an appreciation for local art, then Toppenish is your town. Located in the bountiful Yakima Valley and entirely within the boundaries of the Yakama Nation, the small city of 9,000 is adorned with more than 75 historically accurate murals. Splashed across buildings throughout town, the larger-than-life murals lead visitors through a vibrant visual history of Toppenish. Take in the sights by horse-drawn covered wagon or stroll on foot to view scenes of Native American life and culture, Wild West adventures and early-American ingenuity. In addition to its famous murals, Toppenish is home to three engaging museums. The American Hop Museum chronicles the history of the hop industry, and the Northern Pacific Railway Museum, housed in a 1911 depot, takes visitors on a journey back to the days of steam-driven locomotives. The Yakama Nation Cultural Center is filled with exhibits that celebrate the region’s first residents. In addition, the museum complex houses a restaurant and a spacious gift shop that sells handcrafted accessories, Native American jewelry and distinctive souvenirs. Toppenish was named one of the 20 best places to live in the West by American Cowboy magazine, and the town loves to celebrate its unique qualities and attractions with popular events and festivals throughout the year. The thrilling Toppenish Pow Wow and Rodeo takes place over Independence Day weekend and culminates with a Wild West parade on July 4th. In August, mingle with some of the region’s artists at the Toppenish Western Art Show. In late November through late December, the Toy Train Christmas celebration fills the community with holiday cheer.

26th Annual Lighted Farm Implement Parade December 6th

On the sunny side of the Cascade Mountains, nestled among lush orchards, pastures and vineyards, is the affable town of Sunnyside. Surrounded by wine country and warmed by 300 days of sunshine every year, this small agricultural and culturally diverse community is home to acres of parks, family-owned farms and wineries, an 18-hole golf course, and numerous events and attractions that welcome thousands of Valley visitors. At heart, Sunnyside is a farming community, and proud to share the fruits -and vegetables -- of its labors. Asparagus, cucumbers, corn, tomatoes, cherries, peaches, apples and grapes all thrive in Sunnyside’s fertile soil and on its trees and vines. Spring through fall, visitors are invited to buy or pick fresh produce to enjoy in the Valley or transport home as a delicious reminder of their travels. Sunnyside boasts two charming wineries of its own and is encircled by many more. At Steppe Cellars on Chaffee Road, visitors can taste an intriguing Sémillon, Syrah or Gewürztraminer, then enjoy a picnic in the winery’s lovely cherry orchard. Tucker Cellars on Ray Road produces reds, whites and rosés, as well as gourmet popcorn and spicy pickled beans, asparagus and carrots. Whether you are in search of a fun weekend getaway or an extended stay here in the center of Washington’s Wine Country, they have several hotels, a Bed & Breakfast and a RV park to accommodate your needs. Beer aficionados will feel at home too at Snipes Mountain Microbrewery and Restaurant, a lodge-like eatery that serves hand-crafted ales from Pilsners to Porters alongside steak, seafood and American cuisine for lunch and dinner seven days a week. Be sure to sample the hometown favorite Sunnyside Pale Ale, a four-time award winner in the Best Bitter category. Though small in size, Sunnyside is big on celebrations. Cinco de Mayo festivities take place in May; the Pioneer Picnic is held in June, the Sunshine Days takes place in the fall and the popular Lighted Farm Implement Parade takes to the streets in December.

Cinco de Mayo Celebration The Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration in Sunnyside is held the first weekend of May. This event is billed as Washington’s largest Cinco de Mayo event. If you enjoy Mexican food, this is the place to be! It draws a very large crowd of locals and visitors to enjoy a variety of attractions, including live entertainment, street vendors, carnival, parade, charros and the Miss Cinco De Mayo Pageant.

All year long, the Sunnyside Historical Museum, located downtown at Fourth Street and Grant Avenue, offers a glimpse into Sunnyside’s rich and culturally diverse past. Learn how pioneers and Native Americans shaped Sunnyside’s way of life, and view Ben Snipes’ cabin, a tiny structure built in 1859 to house the town’s first white settler. You can’t miss the fact that Sunnyside offers an abundance of sunshine. After all, it’s right there in the name. But there’s so much more to this amiable agricultural community that you’ll only discover if you make the trip. Pretty vineyards, farm-fresh produce, good food and company, and charming festivals -they’re all waiting for you on this side of the mountains. But you may want to plan your trip to coincide with one of the community’s festive celebrations. In June, put on your kilt for the Scottish Fest and Highland Games. July offers art lovers an evening of art, food, music, and wine at the Art Walk & Wine Gala. In August, more than 3,000 wine enthusiasts converge for the Prosser Wine and Food Fair, an afternoon of fine wine, beer, food and live music. And in September, the skies fill with colorful hot air balloons as the Great Prosser Balloon Rally takes flight. Don’t forget your camera -- after sunset, the balloons are anchored and brilliantly illuminated against the night sky.
