West Aire Valley, Leeds Regeneration Spring 2019 | Academic Project | Individual Work
Life is fantastic Everything is awesome!
’’
I major in Landscape Architecture. I had an environment design background during my undergraduate study. My interests cover landscape planning, urban design and exploring the relationship between humans and environment. I have a habit of seeking out and recording any happy elements in my life. This is why I love landscape and devote myself to creating a positive social atmosphere by the experiential landscape. My aim is to achieve reciprocal socialization.

Users • Walking or cycling transport system between my area and City Centre are bad; • Slow traffic routes are cut off by motorway; • Do not feel comfortable cycling in the city centre • Do not have enough linkage between both riversides of the Aire River;
• In the south of the site, it has much more green space than northern part while it does not open to the public and there are a lot of dead corner in traditional industrial where happens a lot of crime; • In the north of the site, Human daily life is not supported by green public realm, which occurs boring and quiet social atmosphere. • Most of existing green spaces do not meet the quality standard in the last Strategy;
• Flooding issue usually persecute people who live on the ground floor near Leeds Dock; • Unaccessible to riverside; • Unsafe and unattractive; • Lack of facility to stay, sit or have a rest
ASSESSMENT
Key Issue
The site has many interesting urban plots like culture heritages, art and culture museums. However, the surrounding environment of them are not developed ideally and lack of connection. It occurs people come, have a look and leave directly.
HERITAGE & ASSETS
WALKING & CYCLING
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE
• Large potential areas are available to develop, promoting economic development; • The better choice to be a landmark;
• The contradiction intersections between road system and pedestrian/cycling; • Main busy road cut-off walking and cycling system, both user demands need to meet; • Lack of crossings, loop cycling routes and safety.
• HS2 station: potential further severance; • Limited public transport service; • Poor connection between external national systems and internal transportation;
• • • •
Insufficient greenspace in the city region; Limited potential chance for growth; Lack of focal point; Rim of disconnectivity
All these issues have reflected the assessment that the existing environment doesn’t meet human demands. It lost the connection between human behaviour and the surrounding environment. Based on these issues and government policy, the ambition of City Council is set for Leeds to be the ‘Best City in the Uk’, as a fair, open and welcoming city. Focus on the connection between social and environmental dimensions to achieve sustainable development. As a landscape architect, How should I do?
FLOODING
WATERFRONT
SOCIETY
CITY IDENTITY
• Deal with flooding issue in a green and technical way; • Potential benefits for natural habitat development;
• Bored existing waterfront area; • Potential opportunity to be a book of past and future with heritages, natural resources and high tech industries.
• Lack of local facilities (retail store) • The gap between city and surrounding district; • Fragile social relationship; • Lack of activity during non-working hours.
• Unclear city identity; • Lack of landmarks and public space; • Lack night economy
Policy review
Improving the town space and character of places;
Increasing the tourism potential area;
Mitigation and management of flood risk
‘Create a vibrant waterfront area;
+New City Park in the South Bank
+Employment
Spatial Policy 3: Role of Leeds City Centre - Proposes a new City Park in the South Bank area in AVL;
Spatial Policy 5: at least 250 hectares of land for employment use;

VISION & CONCEPT ------ MAGNETIC CITY SYSTEM As a landscape architect, My aim is to identify opportunities to achieve social and environmental dimensions of connection and sustainable development. I get inspiration from ‘A Brief History of Time’ and want to create a ‘Magnetic City’ to close connection between environment and human. The meaning of ‘Magnetic City’: A magnetic field consists of a centre (urban node) of gravity. The aim is to make a close relationship between human and environment. Through enhancing the centre of gravity, promoting social interaction to achieve reciprocation of human and environment and spirally sustainable development.

It’s too waster space, It can be provide more employment opportunity.

Leeds city council proposed a city centre park to deal with lacking of the green public realm in the city centre and meet a large number of human flow from HS2 in the future.
Level two : Interaction
Develop the function of the potential area
•

Level three : Reciprocation
Zone connection
Strategic Plan
City Park New City Park is requested since the green public realm shortage in the city centre and a huge number of businessmen and visitors come from HS2 station. Redevelop the former Tetley Brewery and transform it into a welcoming green public realm. It will be connected with Dock Street, waterfront area by the green corridor.
Mixed residential area This area will be a mixture allocation with housing, leisure, retail store and community green space. Compared with City Council policy, the function of this area tends to be more diverse instead of single housing duty to avoid the same issue happening again, which is higher living density while lower living quality. The new mixture neighbourhood unit will be supported by nearby local facilities.
Hunslet Riverside This area is full of natural resources while it is broken by the existing transport system, which is not supported by a continuous riverside route.
Education Hub This area consists of Leeds College, Leeds City College and secondary school (The Ruth Gorse Academy). The main measure is to build linkage and study atmosphere in this area to provide an outdoor learning environment, which would be beneficial to develop a potential user group from each site.
First of all, it needs to be protected by existing biodiversity and value habitats. Furthermore, It has a chance to develop water leisure activity with Leeds Rowing Clun and Thwaite Mills. Both of the riversides should be connected and become more public for human behaviour. Proposed pedestrian/cycle bridge can link the site to the south and west bank of the river.
Hunslets Mills Based on the existing social issue like high crime rate, air pollution and bad health. This area needs to be more public and green. It needs a green public space which serviced for surrounding works and can be a green buffer between the housing and the glass manufacturing area.
Mixed employment area
The listed buildings(Hunslet Mills) are to be retained, refurbished and reoccupied. Opportunities to create active frontages to the waterfront, Goodman Street and Atkinson Street are encouraged where this is consistent with preserving the setting of the listed buildings.
To meet the demand of Leeds economic development trend, the existing general employment area should be regeneration. The aim is to provide a friendly work environment, try to transition to digital industries and reuse abandoned area.

Reciprocal Life Community Micro-environment Overview
In this project, the transitional edge of the existing residential area is completely dead with a minimum sense of placemaking. However, it is memorable and a retreat getaway for most of the characters. Based on MYTO MAP (Mines, yours, theirs, ours), we collected the characters’ hope intersection to help us identify and explore the locality, laterality and extent of the space. Through model making to develop concept and test ideas. We evaluated each option according to four aspects - Access, comfort, uses, sociability. Furthermore, we analysed how the characters value will increase, like their happiness, health, leisure and so on.

CONCEPT
DESIGN TEST
The concept focuses on temporality, where space has the capacity for periodic change. Adaptability, which is the ability to alter changes or be changed to fit current circumstances and transformability, an idea where spaces open, close, expand and contract. All together will bring the reciprocal lift to our character. It will be about the community which will act together, make together, celebrate together, and work together to make a better place.

Eco - hotel design
1.Tao follows nature
model working 32
2.Conform to the terrain
The vein in natural texture forms rhythmic changes in the process of evolution and create a complex diversity of ecological pattern. According to the trend of mountain, following the natural context and extending natural texture create eco-resort hotel which could 'disappear' in the environment.
3.Build the momentum based on the shape
4.Adjust measures to local conditions
5.Build along the mountain
