First Prize winner of the Carlos Prieto International Cello Competition and Grand Prize winner of the Plowman Chamber Music Competition, Dmitri Atapine has been described as “a splendid, elegant cellist” (MundoClasico) demonstrating “an astonishing showcase of virtuosity” (La Journada), and a “warm vividly coloristic touch on the cello and seemingly effortless command of any stylistic device” (Lucid Culture). He has appeared on some of the world’s foremost stages, including Carnegie Hall and the National Auditorium of Spain. Mr. Atapine’s multiple festival appearances include Cactus Pear (Tex.), Miguel Bernal (Mexico), Aldeburgh (England), Great Mountains (South Korea), Pacific Music Festival (Japan), and Music@Menlo (Calif.) as a performer and as a chamber music coach. For the past three seasons he has served as the artistic director of Ribadesella Chamber Music Festival in northern Spain. As a soloist Mr. Atapine has appeared with the Asturias Symphony Orchestra, Leon Symphony Orchestra, Arche Chamber Orchestra, and the Michigan State and Yale University Orchestras. In June of 2010 he will perform Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the Asturias Symphony Ochestra. In the fall of 2009, a debut CD of cello showpieces in collaboration with pianist Hyeyeon Park was released to critical acclaim on the Urtext Digital label distributed by NAXOS. Born into a family of musicians, Mr. Atapine has studied with Alexander Fedortchenko at the Asturias Conservatory, Suren Bagratuni at Michigan State University, and most recently Aldo Parisot at the Yale School of Music, where he earned his master of musical arts degree and artist diploma. Mr. Atapine has been recently appointed assistant professor of cello at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he is also a cellist with the Argenta Piano Trio.
