artist profiles
Violinist Soo Ryun Baek was born in Korea and enjoyed a successful career at home before her recent move to the US. Her solo awards include first prize in the Sung Jung Music, Korea Music Society, and Eumag Journal competitions, and a special prize in the Korean Philharmonic Orchestra Competition. In Korea, she performed with the City of Bucheon Symphony Junior Orchestra, Seoul Soloists, and in an invitational Kumho Company concert. As a chamber musician, Ms. Baek has performed in Spain, Germany, and the US. She has performed in master classes given by the Takacs Quartet, Peter Salaf, and Arnold Steinhardt. Ms. Baek graduated with honors from Seoul National University and received an Artist Diploma from the Colburn Conservatory of Music. She received the Leni Fe Bland Award in 2008. She participated in the Music Academy of the West in 2007 and 2008. Ms. Baek is currently a student of Ani Kavafian, pursuing her Master of Music degree at the Yale School of Music.
Born in 1985, cellist Arnold Choi has already performed to great acclaim throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. A prizewinner at Korea’s Gyeongnam (Isang Yun) International Music Competition, Mr. Choi has also won first prize at the Canadian National Music Festival and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Competition, among others, and the grand prize at the International Stepping Stone Competition. He has soloed with orchestras including the Montreal and Quebec Symphony Orchestras, Edmonton Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Shanghai Opera House Orchestra, and the Schleswig-Holstein Orchestra. Mr. Choi is a founding member of the Janaki String Trio, which received the Grand Prize at the 2005 Coleman Chamber Music Competition and the 2006 Concert Artists Guild International Competition. The Janaki Trio released their
debut album on Yarlung Records in 2006 to great acclaim and released their second album on Naxos in 2007. Mr. Choi received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Colburn Conservatory and is now studying with Aldo Parisot at the Yale School of Music. Mr. Choi plays on a Carlo Tononi 1725 (Venice) cello, on loan from an anonymous donor.
As a pianist and violinist, Lindsay Garritson has been touring the country and abroad since the age of four. Her piano teachers include Boris Berman, Emilio del Rosario, Luiz de Moura Castro, Zena Ilyashov, and Jane Allen. A frequent participant in master classes, she has studied with Menahem Pressler, Dmitri Bashkirov, Claude Frank, John Perry, and Awadagin Pratt. As soloist with orchestra, Lindsay has performed with the European Philharmonic Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the Alton Symphony, among others. She was awarded first prize at the 2008 Southern Illinois Artist Competition, and second prize at the 2007 MTNA Young Artist Competition in Toronto. As a violinist, Lindsay was concertmaster of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra from 2003 to 2006, and in master classes she has studied with Leonidas Kavakos and Lewis Kaplan. She also loves to travel, read, and spend time with family and friends.
Australian pianist Aura Go is quickly emerging as one of her country’s foremost young musicians, appearing regularly as a soloist, chamber musician and conductor. She has been a concerto soloist with the Melbourne and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras, performed at the 2005 and 2006 Melbourne International Arts Festivals, and given numerous solo and chamber recitals for ABC Classic FM. As a conductor,
Aura has worked with numerous orchestras as part of the Symphony Australia Conductor Development Program. Aura was the winner of the fifth Yamaha Australian Youth Piano Competition in 2001 and the Hephzibah Menuhin Memorial Award and Paul Morawetz Scholarship in 2000. In 2009, she was awarded numerous special prizes at the Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition. Aura earned her Bachelor of Music degree from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2006, where she was awarded the Agnes Robertson, Dowd Foundation, and Dame Elisabeth Murdoch Scholarships. She then took up a place in the Advanced Performance Program at the Australian National Academy of Music. Aura is currently studying with Peter Frankl at the Yale School of Music.
James Kim, 17, is a recipient of the First Prize at the 2009 Boston Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition, First Prize at the 2009 NEC Prep Concerto Competition, Second Prize at the 2009 Blount-Slawson Competition (Montgomery, Ala.), and First Prize at the 2006 International David Popper Competition (Varpolata, Hungary). He is also a recipient of the generous Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship. He has performed in Jordan Hall featured in the radio program From the Top, collaborating with pianist Christopher O’Reilly. He has performed as a soloist with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Orchestra, and with Benjamin Zander and New England Conservatory’s Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. He was selected to perform in the Young Prodigy Recital Series by the KUMHO Foundation. He has participated in summer music festivals such as the Perlman Music Program, Great Mountains Music Festival and School, and the Indiana University Summer Music Festival. He currently studies with Aldo Parisot at the Yale School of Music. His previous teachers
include Laurence Lesser, Janos Starker, and Susan Moses.
Timothy LaCrosse is a first-year student in viola at the Yale School of Music, where he studies with Ettore Causa.
Born in Beijing in 1986, Wai Lau started playing the piano at age seven and the clarinet at age thirteen. She received an Advanced Certificate in clarinet performance from the Associated Boards of the Royal School of Music two years later. Lau won First Prize in Hong Kong region in the Seconnd Toyama Asian Youth Music Competition. She completed her Bachelor of Music degree in clarinet with distinction at Indiana University with James Campbell in 2008, and was awarded the prestigious Performer’s Certificate. While studying in Indiana, she played with the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic and the Bloomington Camerata Orchestra. Lau performed as a finalist in the Seventh Alexandre Tansman International Competition in Lodz, Poland in 2008. In August 2010, she won Grand Prize in the Canadian National Music Festival Competition. She has performed chamber music at Festival of the Sound, Banff, and the Orford Arts Centre with renowned artists such as Russell Braun, James Campbell, Guy Few, Mark Fewer, and James Sommerville. Lau an Artist Diploma student at the Yale School of Music, studying with David Shifrin.
Born in Macau in 1989, Kuok-Wai Lio began his piano studies at the age of five. In 1997, he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He entered the Curtis Institute of Music in 2006. He was invited to study with Andras Schiff at the 2010 International Musicians Seminar and in his

workshop in Lucerne. Lio currently studies with Peter Frankl and Boris Berman at the Yale School of Music. His awards include first prize in the 2007 International Fulbright Concerto Competition for Pianists, first prize in the 2005 Gina Bachauer International Young Artists Competition, gold prize and Yoda (special) prize in the Sixth International Chopin Piano Competition of Asia, second prize at the Third Seiler International Piano Competition for Young Pianist, and third prize in the Fifth Tchaikovsky International Competition for Young Musicians in Japan. Joohye Lim was born in 1985 in Seoul, Korea and began studying violin at age six. She studied with Young Uck Kim at Seoul National University (B.M.) and with Lucy Chapman at New England Conservatory (M.M). She has performed as a soloist with the Seoul National University (SNU) Orchestra in the Seoul Arts Center. She was the concertmaster for the SNU orchestra for four years. Her performances have been broadcast on national radio in Korea as part of the Rising Stars of the Twenty-First Century series by the Korean Broadcasting System. She has participated in music festivals including the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Program, Keshet Eilon Violin Mastercourse, Banff Music Festival, and the Isang Yun Memorial Chamber Music Festival. As a winner of the Dorothy Bales ’41 Violin Competition, she was awarded a one-year lease of a P. Bailly violin.
Joo Hyeon Park was born in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea. Soon after receiving his initial piano lessons, he went on to win various prizes in Korean youth competitions. He then entered the prestigious Yewon Arts School. At the age of twelve, Mr. Park made his professional debut at Opushall in Seoul, Korea. He earned his Bachelor of Music Arts degree with honors at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg. Mr. Park has performed in many festivals and concerts throughout Europe. He is also an active chamber musician, concertizing with the Twins Quartet, Luz Leskowitz, Heidi Litschauer, and Won-Ji Ozim. He has had solo engagements with the Dornbirn Youth Symphony Orchestra, Göttinger Symphony Orchestra, Mecenat Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Symphony Orchestra of the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg. Mr. Park has won first prize and the Audience Choice Award in the 2005 Rotary Lindau-Friedrichshafen Competition, the Mozarteum (Salzburg) 2007 Mozart Prize, the 2008 Animato Foundation Competition, and the Rolf und Ingeborg Rütgers Private Foundation Award 2008. He was selected to be a member of Live Music Now, founded by Sir Yehudi Menuhin.
David Radzynski was born in 1986 in New Haven, where he began studying the violin at the age of six. As a winner of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra Young Musicians Competition in 2001, David appeared as a soloist with the orchestra, playing Beethoven Romance No. 1, with Victor Yampolsky conducting. In 2005 David appeared as soloist with the Polish National Philharmonic in Warsaw, playing the world premiere of Elegy composed by his father, Jan Radzynski. In 2006 David was awarded First Prize in the solo competition, senior division, of ASTA, Ohio. David participated in various summer music programs, including the Rubin Academy of Music (Jerusalem)
Summer Institute for Strings, the Perlman Music Program on Shelter Island, the Norfolk and Aurora Chamber Music Festivals, the Orford and Sarasota Music Festivals, the Prussia Cove Music Seminar, and the Summer Course Villefavard. David’s major violin teachers include Almita and Roland Vamos, Paul Kantor, Mauricio Fuks, and Kevork Maridrossian. He currently studies at the Yale School of Music with Syoko Aki.
Australian clarinettist Ashley William Smith’s performances have been critically reviewed as “incandescent” and “a masterly display of skill and insight.” Ashley holds a Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours from the University of Western Australia, having won numerous awards including the Vose Memorial Concerto Prize, Bello Chamber Music Prize, and the Sir Harold Bailey Award. From 2008-09 Ashley studied at the Australian National Academy of Music, where he won both the audience and jury prizes of the ANAM Concerto Competition. In 2010, Ashley took up the position of ANAM Fellow in Performance. Ashley was awarded a 2010 Australian Broadcasting Cooperation/ Symphony International Young Performer Award as the grand finalist of the ‘other’ instruments’ category. Ashley’s principal area of interest is contemporary music and new approaches to music presentation. He has performed as a soloist in concertos by Mozart, Copland, Krommer, Ross Edwards, and Magnus Lindberg, and frequently performs as a guest with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. Ashley is supported by travelling fellowships from the Friend’s of UWA Music and the Harold Mitchell Foundation.

Aki, violinist Edward Tan currently holds a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance with high distinction as well as a Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied under the guidance of renowned violinist Oleh Krysa. One of five winners of America’s Concerto Competition in 2006, Edward is also a three-time prizewinner in the National Violin Competition in his native Singapore. He has performed as soloist with various orchestras, most notably performing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with Lan Shui and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra in 2002 and the Sibelius Violin Concerto with Gerard Schwarz and the Eastern Festival Orchestra at the Eastern Music Festival in 2006. More recently, he has given two sold-out duo recitals in the Esplanade Recital Studio with pianist Sim Yi Kai, in 2008 and 2009.
