welcome from the Dean Dear Friends, With much pleasure, I welcome you to Yale Opera's Spring production of Così fan tutte. This annual School of Music event in New Haven's historic Shubert Theatre is eagerly anticipated by the professional opera community throughout our region and beyond. The immense success of Yale Opera continues with current students appearing in performances across the globe this past year. Reflecting the excellence of the program, recent YSM graduates are singing at the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden (UK), the Vienna Staatsoper, and many others during the 2016–2017 season. Yale Opera returns to Warsaw in April for a performance of Georges Bizet’s Djamileh at the Beethoven Easter Festival under the baton of Maestro Lukasz Borowicz. The preparation and education of these young singers is guided by our internationally distinguished faculty, guest conductors and directors, and resident staff. We are grateful for your support and encouragement, and I hope you enjoy this beautiful music performed by our talented young artists. robert blocker The Lucy and Henry Moses Dean of Music

welcome from the Artistic Director Dear Friends, Welcome once again to Yale Opera’s mainstage production at New Haven’s historic and beautiful Shubert Theater. It is a particular pleasure to present this new production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte with our gifted young singers. The sublime music of Mozart and lively comedy of da Ponte’s libretto are matched equally by the youthful energy that you will see onstage from singers performing these classic roles, many for the first time. We are thrilled to collaborate once again with Maestro Giuseppe Grazioli. A longtime friend of Yale Opera, he most recently conducted our production of La bohème and has conducted our singers in more than twenty-five operas with the Orchestra Verdi in Milan. Also, we are delighted to introduce stage director Chas Rader-Shieber to our audience. His expertise in this repertoire, coupled with his passion for working with young singers, has created a sublime rehearsal environment and refreshing production. Our talented singers have had a wonderful time working with both Giuseppe and Chas, and we know that their enthusiasm will translate into a scintillating experience for you, our audience. Finally, we’d like to draw your attention to the beautiful sets and costumes designed by John Carver Sullivan. John is our frequent costume designer, but this is his first outing as our scenic designer. We couldn’t be happier with this stunning production. The support of our audience and patrons enables us to bring annual productions to the Shubert Theater. We thank you for joining us and for your support. We wish you a delighful evening. doris yarick cross Artistic Director, Yale Opera

così fan tutte Synopsis
Act I Friends Ferrando and Guglielmo are engaged to sisters Dorabella and Fiordiligi. The men implicitly trust the girls’ faithfulness, but their older friend Don Alfonso thinks otherwise and plans to prove it. A wager is made. Don Alfonso tells the sisters that their sweethearts are to be sent away with their regiment. A tearful farewell follows. Soon afterward, Don Alfonso introduces the men, now in disguise as Albanians, to the sisters. The girls reject their advances, so the men pretend to take poison and fall to the ground. Despina, the sisters’ maid, is in on the deception. Dressed as a doctor, she brings them back to life, but the women still don’t succumb. Act II Despina suggests there’s no harm in flirting to help pass the time. The girls take her advice. Each sister eventually falls for the other’s fiancé. The men are furious. Don Alfonso tells them he knew this would happen and suggests the Albanians marry the sisters for revenge. At the betrothal party, news arrives that Ferrando and Guglielmo are on their way back. The "Albanians" disappear, returning out of disguise. The truth is revealed.
