Artist Profiles William Purvis, horn

Ani Kavafian, violin

William Purvis pursues a multifaceted career in the United States and abroad as horn soloist, chamber musician, conductor, and educator. He is a member of the New York Woodwind Quintet, the Yale Brass Trio, and the Triton Horn Trio, and is an emeritus member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. A passionate advocate of new music, he has participated in numerous premieres of pieces for solo horn, horn concerti, horn trios, and woodwind quintets by such composers as Krzysztof Penderecki, Steven Stucky, and Elliott Carter. Purvis has also been a frequent guest artist at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Boston Chamber Music Society and has collaborated with many of the world’s most esteemed string quartets.

Violinist Ani Kavafian enjoys a prolific career as a soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. She has performed with virtually all of America’s leading orchestras in major venues across the country, has premiered and recorded a number of works written for her, and has been featured on many network and PBS television music specials. Kavafian tours internationally as an artist-member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and appears frequently in performance with her sister, violinist and violist Ida Kavafian.

Purvis is currently Professor in the Practice of Horn and Chamber Music at the Yale School of Music, where he is also coordinator of winds and brasses, and formerly served as Director of the Morris Steinert Collection of Musical Instruments. A Grammy Award winner, Purvis has recorded extensively for numerous labels including Deutsche Grammophon, Sony Classical, Naxos Records, Koch Entertainment, and Bridge Records.

At Yale, Kavafian teaches a studio of graduate-level violin students, coaches chamber ensembles, and frequently performs on Yale’s Faculty Artist Series and Yale in New York series. She regularly teaches and performs at several music festivals, including the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival/Yale Summer School of Music, the Heifetz International Institute, Sarasota Music Festival, and the Meadowmount School of Music. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, of Armenian heritage, Kavafian began piano lessons at age 3. At age 9, in the United States, she began studying violin with Ara Zerounian and eventually with Mischa Mischakoff. She went on to study violin at the Juilliard School with Ivan Galamian, eventually earning a master of music degree with highest honors. She plays the 1736 Muir McKenzie Stradivarius violin.


Mihae Lee, piano Praised by the Boston Globe as “simply dazzling,” Korean-born pianist Mihae Lee has been captivating audiences throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia in solo and chamber music concerts, in such venues as Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Jordan Hall, Berlin Philharmonie, Academia Nationale de Santa Cecilia in Rome, Warsaw National Philharmonic Hall, and Taipei National Hall. An active chamber musician, she is a founding member of the Triton Horn Trio and was an artist member of the Boston Chamber Music Society for three decades. Lee has appeared frequently at numerous international chamber music festivals including Dubrovnik, Amsterdam, Medellin Festicamara, Busan, Gimhae, Seattle, OK Mozart, Mainly Mozart, Music from Angel Fire, El Paso, Arizona Friends of Chamber Music, Chamber Music Northwest, Rockport, Bard, Norfolk, Mostly Music, Electric Earth Concerts, Music Mountain, and Monadnock. In addition, she has collaborated with the Brentano, Juilliard, Tokyo, Muir, Cassatt, and Manhattan string quartets, and has premiered and recorded works by such composers as Gunther Schuller, Ned Rorem, Paul Lansky, Henri Lazarof, Michael Daugherty, and Ezra Laderman. Lee is a graduate of the Juilliard School and the New England Conservatory studying with Martin Canin and Russell Sherman, and has released recordings on the Bridge, Etcetera, EDI, Northeastern, and BCMS labels. In addition to her

concert career as pianist, she is Artistic Director of the Essex Winter Series and Chestnut Hill Concerts in Connecticut, and Music Director of the Sebago-Long Lake Music Festival in Maine.
