ZHONGKANG ROAD PUBLIC REALM REGENERATION PROJECT BOOKLET YA LIU 2020

Zhongkang Road is on the north extension of the central axis in Futian District, Shenzhen. Due to the segregation caused by the urban expressway, Beihuan Road, the area was somehow neglected in the early urban planning of Shenzhen and now suffers from poor pedestrian environment and accessibility, dilapidated urban facilities and lack of public space. This project was commissioned by the District Government to enhance the public realm of Zhongkang Road, making it a safer, greener, and more accessible area.

The sidewalks are enhanced through new permeable paving with the addition of a new cycle lane. Improvements such as raised pedestrian crossings are incorporated to prioritize the pedestrian experiences. Tree pits are enlarged to accommodate bioswales as part of the stormwater management system. The enhanced sidewalk will be the main thread which links thresholds, nodes and public spaces along Zhongkang Road.

1. TO IMPROVE THE PEDESTRIAN EXPERIENCE Raised pedestrain crossings will be introduced while footpath area will be widened. Some inner streets will be temporarily pedestrainized to be street markets.

The public space to be upgraded involves a complex group of stakeholders, which makes the process extremely difficult. Nevertheless, the involvement of design and art has played a role of “lubricant. The reflection of the urban design discourse and the search for collective memory have more or less aroused resonance and discussion, thus promoting communication and understanding.

The plot at the South-East corner of Zhongkang Road has been enclosed idle for over 20 years —— it belonged to Huamaoyuan Neighbourhood before 2000. The community was strongly against any kind of developments since then. The design process of the park has included the residents from the beginning. Workshops were held to consult their demands and they also participated in the jury. The discussion on this vacant piece of land has provoked extended imagination on the street and to the future community.
