RISE AND FALL BED

01 SMALL SIZE OF THE FUNCTIONAL DESIGN PROJECT ——The low-income people can have a dignified dignity Urbanization and second-child policy change in urban family structure led to an increase in housing demand. But the contradiction between rising house prices and income lag make these farmers just entering the city and low-income urban residents cannot afford an area suitable for residing. Through the modular design China Skeleton Infill, this project achieves two units and three design options, which would cost less money. Considering the owner’s improvement of economic conditions and the birth of second child, this project uses the horizontal and vertical space to re-planning to meet the requirements of more features and comfort. Without changing the original structure of old structure, the low-income people live in a happy saving style. 1st Year Studio Type: Residential Date: Mar. 2012 Location:Beijing Role: Student team (twosome) (I contributed the concept)

THE FIRST PERIOD PROJECT:

The first period project of construction can fully meet all the needs of daily life, and separate the space for children to use, so that the entertainment space for children is undisturbed. And considering the possibility of adding the second period, this project sets aside the upper space. In order to save space, we combine the cabinets and stairways, and combine the living room, dining room and storage room.

When the owners accumulated enough savings, the reserved upper space can be transformed to be more diversified. The vertical space is subdivided into six parts. Space becomes more abundant and space liquidity becomes more strengthened just because of patios and screen. Meanwhile, it becomes more convenient for family members to keep their own personal space and have more opportunities to interact with each other.

02 RETIREMENT COMMUNITY RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT

——A gift for grandma Before the design, I visited a number of the elderly, and asked their opinions about the inconvenience and distress about living in this community. During the design process, I tried my best to meet their various demands. Through the central platform of the air design, this project realizes to open up the corridors among residential areas, teaching buildings and stadiums. Hence, they are more willing to meet and chat with neighbors. At the same time, my project also solves the problem for students to go through the campus instead of by the main road out of the campus. Meanwhile, if the corridors actually are opened up, it will become easier for professors and students to interact with each other, and also increase the vitality of the whole community. It will become more convenient for senior citizens to have fun with their friends and families if I design an exterior corridor with staircase, and set up different function rooms on each floor. Besides, in this project, I still add the Community Service Center which provides health care, food and medicine delivery, home services and elderly day care and so on. At the same time, my project also addresses a problem for students. The residential care used to be a closed area where only the elderly residents can access, therefore, students have to take a much longer trip than necessary to go around the care through the main road outside the campus to another building. Considering the inconvenience,my project bridges over the residential care, connecting the dormitory and the teaching hall, plus keping the interruption outside the residential care. 4st Year Studio Type: Residential Date: Apr. 2015 Location:Beijing Role: Individual

Some old professors in this community lived in the Hutong where the relationship between people is in harmony. This project extracted the “path of the Hutong into stairways and corridors, which would allow the Hutong to extend the vertical space. Then the gathering space in the Hutong becomes a separate activity room and be placed it in each floor, so that the elderly professors can continue their former lifestyle in this building.

BEFORE REMODELED

If students want to go back to the d o r m i to r y, t h e y must use the outside school sidewalk. After remodeled, the sidewalk will connect any two buildings for students to walk on. This place will become the new transport hub.

03 LIBRARY PROJECT

ARCHITECTURE PROTFOLIO

——The story of a tree This project is my own experience about surroundings for my college life. If a student loses of his or her goals and belief, his or her college career must be full of decadence. In the design process, a 100-yearold ginkgo tree located in the original site becomes the soul of this project. Through the lead of the ginkgo tree, students go out the dormitory to participate in healthy community activities and be more willing to read and learn more knowledge. 2st Year Studio Type: library Date: Oct. 2012 Location:Nanjing Role: Individual

Whether we should try our best to study?

This project is located in the school’s main entrance which is also the junction between the teaching area and the dormitory area. There is a hundred years old tree. Students more prefer to relax and chat under this tree. Taking these conditions into account, preserving this ancient tree and maximizing all these advantages is the starting point for this project.

This stairway feels like that it can lead us to heaven of knowledge.

We can appreciate the whole picture of the old trees

Entertaining space

The project breaks the traditional traffic space. Traffic space, as the most important part of the entire building, can carry more features, such as communication, exhibition and reflection, not just a simple traffic space. The traffic space can turn into a nice landscape, diversifying the invariant building.

STEP THREE: HINT Getting into the second floor, we can see the glass wall. It will become easier for students to view other people who are leaning, reminding themselves to be just as dedicated as the others.

ARCHITECTURE PROTFOLIO

STEP FOUR: REST Each floor will have its own indoor and outdoor space for students to rest. This space encourage everyone go out to enjoy the scenery when they feel tired. Thus, students can have more opportunities to take their mind off study. All of these distinguish this library from most libraries which ask people to keep silent.

Yalun Chen

STEP FIVE: SHOCK When getting into the fourth floor, a whole book wall gives us a powerful visual impact, so that we can feel the power of knowledge, and are more willing to study hard.

STEP TWO: TRANSITION When first getting into this library, we don’t feel the pressure of study because of the exist of gym and non-function areas on the first floor. And that equipment makes us feel like going into an entertaining center, so that students are more willing to be going into this building. 6

04 CULTURAL AND ART CENTER PROJECT ——The port of mind and body

ARCHITECTURE PROTFOLIO

In the design of space and function, in order to realize the relaxation of cultural art center, in the entrance and corridor of square, this project sets ‘quiet’ as the theme, using the sunken plaza to achieve the separation between theater and noisy environment. At the same time, the water designed for the two sides of a long corridor brings inner peace to every irritable people. Through light and shade changes, curved aisles, and large-scale open space, tourists wander, stop, overlook, or meditate in every room of this building. And all of them highlight the ‘slow’ theme.

The square in front of the building adds a few touches of the church. The play area for children is similar to the priest’s station in the church, while the rear seats are similar to the listening seats in church. Visitors sitting in the chair see children play in their area, which gives them a family feeling. All of those provoke them to think about what is the most important

Th i s p ro j e c t u s e s a ra mp to connect the outdoors of the building, and when we stand on the top floor, the hustle and bustle atmosphere comes into our eyes. As the visitors go down, noise of every floor is reduced until at the sunken square where all the noisy environment is isolated by the wall. Thus sunken square offers visitors an excellent place for them to review their life.

ATTRACT People inside theater cannot see what is going on outside, but the Unidirectional glass meet the curiosity of people walking outside to see through.

ALLURING The long and curved corridor attracts people to go into there. The picture on the wall can be appreciated by all visitors. In the same time, the gurgling water outside let the visitor feel like they are in the countryside.

The coffee shop in the entrance is completely different from others, which are noisy and busy. Through the skylight, users can enjoy all the day to experience the time elapse or travel back in time. The light is changing slowly, which reminds visitor to calm down and enjoy this place.

TRAVEL BACK IN TIME

MUSE When the visitors look outside through the window, they will feel that clean water mix together with blue sky. This fantastic landscape seems to be the paradise without any noise. Why they must work hard every day, even forget the family. This question will be considered in this time.

05 MEDICAL COMPLEX PROJECT ——Life of spring, summer, autumn and winter

Medical Complex Project is a joint graduation design for teaching subjects between Nanjing Tech University and University of Kansas. And it is also my graduation project. The concept of this project follows the life cycle and the corresponding change with spring, summer, autumn and winter. And it consists of four independent, but also mutual symbiosis units: Spring —Postpartum Rehabilitation Center, shows the birth of new life Summer—Medical Center, undertakes the child center and the elderly rehabilitation center medical service, (also serves the surrounding villages) Autumn —Health Management Center, for health management of middle-aged urban citizens and training of the surrounding rural doctors

The project accommodates patients who are transferred from urban hospital since it is crowded in the urban hospital. Also, this is a good opportunity to renovate the traditional structure of medial service, making the hospital more hospitable, instead of the conventional image of being cold and scary.

In order to break the traditional cold hospital, the hospital adds new elements, which can let the patient does not feel that they were live in the hospital, however, it seems to live in their own communities. Which enables the patients to feel like they are at home.

1.

1. Market: the central part of the building provides a place for trade, who are living around the hospital, so that they can sell their vegetables and fruit that are grown by themselves and free from chemical pollution. 2.Old patients can watch the children in playing park through the windows. Hospital experts

Beijing

Large hospitals can send experts per month to teach the rural hospital doctors, for experience and skills which can increase the level of medical treatment. In the future, the hospital will be likely to achieve the hierarchical medical system, so that a community hospital can treat ailments.

A large area of floor glass brings the outdoor environment into the room. This way can guide people go out the building and encourage patients to share their concerns and exchange experience.

Mothers can use the sunken space, which is the mothers only, for rehabilitation training. The nursery can help the mother to take care of the baby, so that every mother can feel at ease to recovery.

2.The operating room and the postpartum care center is connected, so that newborns can be sent to the postpartum care center in the shortest time, minimizing new babies’ time exposing to bacteria.

When the training is over, the indoor rest space is very suitable for new mothers to communicate. The bright and spacious space can give new mothers a unique experience.

THE UNIQUE VISITOR EXPERIENCE

10:30 Visitors and the elderly can use the air corridor of the barber shop to cut hair.

The main reason why more and more patients’ relatives are reluctant to see them is that staying in the hospital is a totally boring thing, in the same time, the environment of the hospital is too depressing. In order to break the old hospital tradition, the project adds some interesting functions which can be enjoyed by the all family. In this case, the patients can feel better and not alone.

OTHER WORK

When the teacher said that the building process of Lingxiang pavilion should be animated, the entire group did not want to complete this impossible mission, but I must to assume this responsibility as leader. I knew that it was so difficult to build the curve constructed, let alone to make this process a motion graphic. I spent half a month to self-study CAD and 3Dmax, after that I used these software to make the final product. It was a good thing for me that this film has been used as an example since then.

What is architecture? I think that architecture is a man-made space; is the function of the display, the spiritual sustenance, but also is a carrier to solve the social problem.
