HI ! I'm Takahito Yamada, born in 1988 in Tokyo, Japan, studied architecture at Tokyo Metropolitan University. During the period 2012-2014, I have participated in reserching project in South Asia such as Thailand seminars, study tours in Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore etc. After graduating from the University, I moved to Vietnam and joined Vo Trong Nghia Architects in 2014 as an Architect. Since 2016, I have been the Senior architect and managing several projects at the headquarters of the Architecture office in Ho Chi Minh City.

This is a private house project for the three-generation family located in an emerging residential area, 15-minutes drive from the center of Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. The newly built houses around the site form a highly dense neighborhood and they share the outer wall with each other. The site of project is in such a narrow site of 7 meter wide x 20 meter long. Among such typical highly dense residential development areas in Asia, we decide to propose a stradegy of housing that suitable for the tropical climate in which greenar y and the residents live intertwinely. The client’s f irst re quest is “a l arge g re en garden” w here children can play and adults can have BBQ with their family and f r i e nds . In a d d it i on , t he re s i d e nt s a ls o e x p e c t a bi g swimming pool, spaces for exercise, a grandmother’s bedroom, a living room & a dining with kitchen, a sufficient parking lot - all on the ground floor. Hence, we have proposed to divide the idea of the “large green garden” into smaller connected gardens.

Con t in u ou s G a r den Specifically, as the volume of the building is climbed from the ground floor, it is gradually set back while twisting. On the top floor, the house is configured to protrude a two meter cantilever to the main road. The stepped gardens of the house are placed interwinely with the terrace as they are connected and continuous to the top floor.

At s ome place, it is designe d as a private garden that the residents can access directly from their bedroom. While in other space, the terrace becomes the public garden which everyone can gather. 10

PL A N N I NG In the interior space, the ground floor and the first floor are connected by a huge central void. It attaches all of the main funtional spaces such as the living room, the dining with kitchen, the librar y and the kids’ bedroom to become one space in which the residents can interact with each other. 15

L ONG SEC TION Stepping garden on the facade not only work as a interior garden but also behave as a pocket park for the surrounding city. In such a hig h dence buildings, this garden provide natural wind, green scape and voices of children.

E LE VAT ION People, natural winds, natural lights pass through the entire building by stepping through the building in stepping garden. Each step is sometimes a tree pot, a private terrace, or a glass top light.

Under rapid urbanization, cities in Vietnam have diverged far from their origins as sprawling tropical forests. Nowadays, the excessive increase of motorbikes causes daily traffic congestion as well as serious air pollution. In addition of that, many families in Vietnam are living in a Multi-generation. Therefore, the current challenge is to create spaces which allow them interact and communicate despite their differences. The gardens lo cated on the top of the ver tically stacking spaces; bounded by sliding glass doors. This strategy improves the microclimate thanks to natural ventilation and daylight in every room, but also the alternately stacking openings increase visibility and interaction between the family members. Living, dining, bedrooms and study room are continuously opened. In fact, from one room to another, people's sightlines can reach beyond to the other rooms via the gardens.

P l an ni ng All the openable functions - such as living, dining,bedroom and library - are gathered in the east side, and are arranged in a stripe shape while sandwiching the gardens and the voids. This composition creates a large space connected to each other's rooms while being loosely partitioned by green . 32

SE RV I C E F U N C T I ON All the survice function such as WC, closet, storage, corridor and staircas e are compac ted into the the ver tical volume located to the west side area. Thanks for this, rooms can be located to various level. Also, this volume blocks the harsh west sunlight in Vietnam.

E N V I RON M E N TA L S T R AT E G Y Tropical double skin -which is composed by trees and sliding glasses - created microcliemate in this house with natural ventilation from the river, natural sunlight with tree shade. These work for the reduction in running cost and energy.

3 PROPOSE THE "ARC HI TECTURE" Instead of making the presentaion panel, we proposed to create our "Arhitcture" in the courtyard of this building. It's totally beyond the given plot but we showed how this bamboo building will have the power to develop this exhibision.

The modulized 14 bamboo frames are supported by surrounded bamboo grid. Maximum hight of this exhibision is 6m which is over the courtyard wall, thanks for this, people can see from the mainstreet and could be good advertizement. 51

Ho Chi Minh is a largely flat area which is populated with vertical structures. In this context, FPT University appears as a Forrest Mountain organically growing within this cityscape. FPT is designed to accommodate the influx of 5000 students, along with various functional spaces required within a limited plot of 22500 m2. In this complex, green spaces work as the spatial connection and orientation of the whole. C ar ving through the building and continuing to the roof, green area is dedicated to circulation and gathering, as courtyard and semioutdoor garden. Furthermore, the building facade is rendered by trees which cleanse the air and reduce energy consumption. The building is designed to aid the recovery of greenery, once flourished in the city, and foster new generation of thinkers.

E N V I RON M E N TA L S T R AT E G Y Environmental strategies: Green double skin system The shade and evaporation of trees cool the space, while thick soil layer works as heat insulator. The window placement enhances cross ventilation. By utilizing simple technology and natural resources, the construction and running cost of the building is maintained quite low, while providing well-tempered comfortable space. 94

All the design should be dedicated for the guest's experience ; ex. chilling among the tropical trees - ex. drinking local beer within local atmosphere - ex., sleeping under the warm & dark lightings - etc.
