や ま が み ゆ か り

Yukari Yamagami grew up in Japan, a historical city, Nara. She was introduced to the old traditional arts, culture, architecture, and plenty of nature during her childhood. While she was in university obtaining a B.A. in Social Science from Ritsumeikan University of Japan in 2012, she volunteered for a program in the USA called “Habitat for Humanity”, visiting through which she spent time in Mongolia building houses. The experience working with locals, as well as for constructing their homes, opened her eyes to the fun of constructing and joy of being helpful to others. Through both studies and experiences, she has recognized that we as humans are apt to be invariably influenced by the design of Interior spaces. It led her to a strong desire to facilitate interaction between society and space that she had generated during her studies in Social Sciences. She has both Japanese and Chinese in her background, as she has visited one of the main cities in China, Shanghai, often and studied at Jiaotong University in 2013. The experience living in Shanghai gave her opportunities to look into their modern architecture as well as traditional architecture from which was being updated to new one. She had opportunities to compare those old and new buildings and understand the meaning of architecture for us. During her university years, she worked and assisted the architect, which was one of her professors, in the field of Housing Environment. She realized her interest towards architecture and interior space since then. It led her to move to Canada, Vancouver for starting a new field, Interior Design to understand this interaction between society / culture, and space, and to enrol at LaSalle College Vancouver, Diploma and Bachelor of Applied Design in Interior Design in 2016 and 2020. During her studies at the college, she came to realize the importance of the communication aspect of design. In order to output and communicate those concepts clearly, design has a wide range of significant creative possibilities. The place where Yukari comes from, Japan has inspired her in so many ways. The way of seeing things in life, everything could be an inspiration. However, she has been interested in traveling around the world since she was young, and it has influenced her artistic style as well. Travelling through East to West, 13 different countries has opened her eyes. It was a great opportunity for her to realize how many characteristics and unique cultures we have in this whole world, and how it influenced our everyday life. What makes her always curious and passionate is how each of our stories of life influence the space that we live in, and how much power that “space” has to influence the aspect of our life experiences and culture. The “space” exists not only because of the building, yet people’s life brings more value and fulfillment to that space. As she grew up in a city surrounded by mother nature, nature has always been one of many great teachers for her. Being in the trees with all the light bouncing around, warmly cuddling you, that moment is really inspiring. Floating in the middle of the ocean, looking up at the breathtaking blue sky, and the endless horizon line in front of you is always inspiring people. The combination of curiosity towards both human society and nature are what motivates and encourages her to move forward in creation. She believes that we as humans, our desire is to find a balance in the chaos and live in comfort with harmony. The solution could be found through the understanding of nature, including ourselves, human nature. Design is a process of visualizing the solution. Nomatter what design, there can always be a comfortable harmony and rhythm within each materials, typography, texture, and others, it is like poetry. She believes these personal experiences are such that others can relate, and it is always a great motivation for her to bring a new creation to the world.

Hospitality / Community Project The purpose of this project is to create a design that can dynamically interact with its social, natural, or built surroundings (Laka Competition 2020). Here demonstrate how I have achieved the design from abstraction to completion. It details an assignment from my Senior Project course as part of my Bachelor’s of Interior Design degree, and highlights a strong desire to facilitate interaction between society and space that I had generated during my previous Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences. Through both fields, I have recognized that we as humans are apt to be invariably influenced by the design of interior spaces.

8

A goal is to create a unique space that can assemble people, and provide an opportunity for each of them to share spontaneous experiences. I have chosen a curved organic shape as the interior concept, and got inspiration from a natural color scheme. In order to provide a space that is naturally comfortable, I have designed the skylight on the top floor to get enough sunlight to indoor space. Kitchen on the first floor also kept the same organic concept but has a smooth surface in order to be easy for cleaning.

Kitchen Thahito and local communities

Design Brief

10

Kitchen Thahito

Through achieving the goal of the project, I acknowledged that we are facing some social issues everyday. A lack of a sense of belonging has been shown to be associated with loneliness, emotional distress, psychosocial disturbance, and mental illness (Judy et al.). A feeling of isolation or no connection between people is becoming one of the main issues of depression around the world nowadays. It affects the working environments, families, the development of children, and more. Kitchen Thahito mainly focuses on any communities in Vancouver BC that need to grow the feeling of social belonging. Vancouver is one of the main cities which has a lot of potential to grow within Canada. However, it has complex issues due to its variety of communities and cultures from immigrants. It also leads to a lack of sense of belonging. Kitchen Thahito’s vision is to create a connection between many people who lack a sense of belonging in society. Kitchen Thahito makes this possible by offering a platform by using a double-decker bus for people to share activities such as cooking, eating, and traveling without boundaries. Providing mobility to the design will also enhance the ease of access and the diversity of people who will experience positive joy. In addition, the word “Thahito’’ means “travelers”. Nomadic lifestyle has become one of our main lifestyles nowadays, and it is the natural way human beings interact with the world with their curiosity. I embarked upon my own first overseas trip with my family to the USA when I was 10. At the time, I was not able to understand the local language, but every moment was precious. The strongest memory that I had during the time was on a bus when we were heading to the hotel in Los Angeles. While on the bus, an elderly lady winked at me and tried to communicate by gesturing. We started to connect with each other by exchanging simple words. This experience opened my eyes to the world and made me curious about how to be inclusive of other people. My goal is to create a unique space that can assemble people, and provide an opportunity for each of them to share spontaneous experiences.

The advantage of using a double-decker bus is endless possibilities for its location. It allows a space such as a parkinglot in a restaurant to turn into a public social space, a school parking to the educational open space for students to gather, and even the possibilities are open to the public community such as a local park. The possible site examples below are the parking spaces of a restaurant, La Piazza Dario located in the Italian Cultural Centre and Lasalle College Vancouver. The reason for these locations as ideal sites is it could show the possibilities of Kitchen Thahito could reach for. The parking space of La Piazza Dario in the Italian Cultural Centre is large enough for a double-decker vehicle to be set up widely. Moreover, to locate Kitchen Thahito in the pizza restaurant is ideal for connecting people to people, people to social activities and people to the local, seasonal foods. It can create more dynamic social interactions between customers and the local communities. It is also important to consider the effects of Kitchen Thahito bring to the education field. Like Lasalle College Vancouver, there is a large parking lot in the back side of the building. It is located in front of a cafeteria of the college and many times college students are gathering and socializing there, however, it has limitations in a variety of foods and as a social environment. It would be an educational place for students to learn cooking skills at the same time provides a social space outside of school. It would be a part of their cartinary course and would be a center of student community. To achieve local community groups, there are many parks that has a potential to be a public space.

Form Progression

14

Kitchen Thahito

The organic form on the other hand is innate, it shapes as it develops itself from within, and the fullness of its development is one and the same with the perfection of its outward Form. Such is the Life, such is the form. Nature, the prime genial artist, inexhaustible in diverse powers, is equally inexhaustible in forms. -A. W. Schlegel, Samuel Taylor Coleridge

The cursivewriting lines form emphases our development in art history as a human. There are numerous amounts of language written in hand, and used as an art and architecture all through past and precent. It deliveres our abstract messeges into concrete shapes. It leads us to imagine many things in our life: Special feeling receiving something handwritten, Birth of new horizon, Finalizing the journey for the love one who can not see each other in the distance, A development of human and art history. A goal is to create a unique space that can assemble people, and provide an opportunity for each of them to share spontaneous experiences. A cursivewriting lines form is a shape that provides natural confort to everyone.

Bon Voyage Restaurant

や ま が み ゆ か り

Commercial Design Project Bon Voyage Restaurant presents customers an unique experience of “Romance of flying the sky” for their special day. It’s an individual restaurant that has an unique and high-end atmosphere to the space design. Its extraordinary environment calls to mind our curiosity and joy as if our first step of “flying the sky”.

38

Its design process is to achieve an aesthetic look and feel of the shape of flow in order to empathize the atmosphere of flying in the sky. The design uses the organic shape of the airplane body and wings as a motif. As well as the importance of form of design, materials have significant influence on the environment. Fabrics have a language of light and float to the atmosphere. Having fabrics on the ceiling creates the ambient of clouds and softness to the space. A large space is the potential to the space design. To maximize the advantage of vertical space, mezzanine is used in the space and it divides the space between open and intimate areas. The large windows with breathtaking views is a key point of this project. In order to “fly the sky the view must be accessible from each corner of the space. The space guides guests from entrance to the seats through the waiting area, lounge, and bar counter as if going through from the security gate of the airport, runway and finally to departure to the sky.

2020 / 08 / 23

Nothing is as precious than time. It is not visible to the eyes and all the more reason, we feel this changing of air in the taste of each seasons, breeze caressing our cheeks, and the voice of ocean. A night in the end of summer when I was 10, I watched a TV about a story of a mummy girl in somewhere Europe. Her eyes were closed as if she was sleeping in her ethereal beauty. I still remembered that I felt as through the flow of time surrond her was frozen. I fell a sleep with my family while we were watching. They were sleeping peacefully on tatami mat (Japanese flooring). As I looked up the ceiling light, tears rolled down my eyes naturally. I wished this time would go on forever. To live in today’s world, we often fall under the illusion that we are wasting time if we do not move constantly. Most importantly, we should rather consciously be aware of and feel our live.
