Greta is only the last one of a series of eco-heroes who, with their strenght and loud voice, brought world’s attention to ecological issues to defend nature and the environment.

My political battle for WOMEN’S RIGHT TO VOTE meant that I was not well loved, and even today there are those who, together with praises for my work, cast doubts on my person. I was certainly extreme and not inclined to give up on what I believed was the foundation of my political action. I don’t deny having had doubts, especially regarding my daughters’ participation in the movement, but I never for one moment stopped thinking that I WAS DOING THE RIGHT THING, not only for myself, but FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. Just a few weeks before my death, the right to vote in England was given to women over 21 years of age. It was a historical event, and I am proud to have

How is honey made? And how does the rainbow form? The friendly fairies will teach children how the magic happens!

Making Natural Pigments

Rainbows are magic! Wherever they appear or are recreated, through experiments or by painting them, they inspire happiness and bring a dash of mystery. You can draw a rainbow whenever you want, using lots of different types of paints, from tempera to watercolors. You can even use pigments made from plants! My friend Violet has given me a few tips on how to create natural paints, and I’d like to share them

THE SECRETS OF NATURE!

YELLOW You can use saffron, taken from the pistil of a crocus flower with purple petals, diluting it in water. Or you can use turmeric, a fragrant spice.

RED Blend a few red fruits, like cherries or raspberries.

GREEN Seeing as it stains your clothes, you might think grass would be a good pigment. However, it’s easier to make green paint by boiling and blending certain vegetables, like spinach.

with you too. ORANGE

BLUE Blended blueberries make a perfect pigment! If you are up for a little experiment, boil red cabbage and add baking soda to the water. Watch as it turns blue!

Carrots are best for making orange pigment. Put them in a juicer to get a liquid you can use like paint.

VIOLET Violet isn’t easy to make. But if you carefully combine boiled then blended beetroots and berries, you can get pretty close to the perfect hue.

INDIGO can be created by mixing blue and violet to get the right shade.

20

Animals, Plants, or Weather?

21

Sky Violet

No two fairies are alike, but according to the role we each play, we can be divided into three groups. There are fairies that care for plants and trees, like Violet wants to do; those who look after Earth’s animals, big and small, like Leah dreams of doing some day; and those who are involved in “meteorological phenomena,” which essentially means the weather: rain, fog, snow, and so on. I’d love to become one of them!

Leah

WEATHER FAIRIES are sort of like scientists. Their main job is to study why certain types of meteorological phenomena occur and whether they’re good or bad. Sometimes, for fun, we make things a bit more magical. For example, we might make it rain while the sun’s out, creating a rainbow. ANIMAL FAIRIES aren’t just miniature veterinarians. They’re interested in the overall well-being of creatures. It isn’t enough for animals to be healthy; they should be happy too. For that reason, animal fairies never back down when it comes to pampering sad animals. PLANT FAIRIES are usually a bit more serene and patient than other fairies. Just like plants, they’re never in a hurry. With their small, expert hands, they take care of roots, branches, and leaves, using them to make incredible extracts.

This book guides young readers on a quest for fascinating and unforgettable fantasy creatures through the diary of a young apprentice who studies information, legends and details. Two sections dedicated to the Creatures for Beginner Keepers (docile and sweet) and the Creatures for Expert Keepers (the most dangerous).

7+ How to Make Friends with a Unicorn: • Offer it some sugar cubes (they love them, just like horses!). But not too many, though, it might make the unicorn sick . . . or ruin its teeth!

Favorite Pastimes:

• The mane needs brushing very gently and, if you can, try to braid it, too. Unicorns like to look tidy.

Roaming around the forest looking for obstacles to jump. Unicorns are very good at this but have to be careful not to get their horn tangled up in the branches!

64 pp 275 x 305 mm hardcover

• Never climb on its back, not even for a joke (would you like someone to climb up on your shoulders?!).

How to Attract a Unicorn: Unicorns love music but only if it’s not too loud, so no loudspeakers or microphones. The best thing would be to play a flute or guitar. If you don’t play a musical instrument yet, you can always try whistling a tune!

There’s also a very rare species of winged unicorn, called an alicorn. The magnificent wings are layered with feathers, like those of a swan.

the RoAd to Rome The road that leads to Rome is full of people. Donkeys and oxen pull plaustra, heavy two-wheeled carts that carry wheat or building stones. A horse that is pulling an essendum, a small, very fast chariot, leaves a white cloud in its wake. There are also several slower, covered four-wheeled carts, which are used in particular by people traveling with lots of luggage. “Stay on the sidewalk,” his tutor tells him. Averius usually likes walking, but today he drags his feet in the gravel. He tries to go as slowly as possible. He’s certainly not in a rush to find out what the test will be on…quite the opposite! He has an idea that makes him smile. He catches up to his tutor and bombards him with questions on any topic that springs to mind. “Next you’ll want to know why the wheel is round!” grumbles his teacher, raising his eyes to the sky. But Averius doesn’t get distracted and carries on. “Why is Rome on seven hills? Why are there so many roads? And what about those strange arches, one on top of the other? What’re they?” Marcus is about to answer when a chariot comes up alongside them.

It then breaks sharply and cuts them off! “Ave, Marcus!” the driver greets him. “Do you need a ride?” “Yes, and that’s not all I need!” replies the teacher, helping the boy into the chariot. “Averius, this is Annius, a dear old friend of mine. I taught his children, you know. Annius will be able to answer all your questions about the city since he’s the architect!” They set off quickly, and Averius sighs. His plan has backfired! He was trying to distract his teacher with lots of questions, and now they’d reach Rome in next to no time! Annius looks at him, amused, before starting to talk…

The babies of the Cervidae family are born in the bushes of the prairies or woodlands, and they have to hide, to avoid being seen by predators like wolves, foxes or birds of prey. The babies’ fur coat is hazelnut brown with white spots, and, when they are curled up in the grass, the deer look like lumps of earth and pebbles.

A roe is a little, agile deer, who can’t quite keep up with its parents’ great leaps as soon as it is born. That’s why it stays hidden away among the vegetation for a while, while its mother goes to look for food. As it grows, the baby roe loses its markings, and its fur will turn a uniform brown shade like the other adults, darker in winter and lighter and brighter in summer.

If it is a male, the roe will grow horns, or rather antlers: because they are not really horns like oxen or goats have, they drop every year and grow back for the next season. 1.9

If you watch baby lions playing under the heat of the African sun, it is difficult to imagine that, when they grow up, they will become powerful lions, whose length can exceed 8 ft 2 in (2.5 m) excluding their tail, or agile lionesses, who can even kill an enormous buffalo! But, there’s plenty of time for hunting… in the meantime, mommy lion makes sure they have enough of her milk and keeps them safe. The lion cubs are lively and they can take liberties that, throughout the whole savannah, are reserved only to them! Like, for example, biting the biggest male lion’s tail, the head of the pride, without him getting angry or telling them off! The cubs’ fur is light brown, but they are mottled on their thighs and legs, which makes them almost invisible when they are lying down to rest. As they grow, these marks will slowly disappear and they will develop an adult’s plain fur.

THE CUBS OF BIG CATS

Roe deer live in Europe and Asia in woods and cultivated fields, where you can see them jumping and playing with their family, made up of females and babies.

The cubs are loved by the whole tribe and there will trouble for any animal that comes near with bad intentions. Lions are the strongest African carnivores, and just the presence of the lioness and the large males is enough to keep hyenas and leopards away. Given that lions live in groups, when the lioness has to go and hunt someone stays and babysits the cubs, so they are never alone.

G) (1.3–2 K 6 OZ

To move the cubs around, the lioness seizes them by the scruff of the neck in a bit of rough way. Not having hands, she can’t do it any differently and she doesn’t harm them in any way.

We all know dinosaurs: we usually imagine them as gigantic and scary lizards, as the dominating protagonists of life on Earth of a long gone era. Actually, dinosaurs were very diverse in shape and dimensions and they lived during a long geological era that paleontologists call “Mesozoic”.

Now completely extinct, dinosaurs lived in a period between 245 and 65 million years ago, but not all Mesozoic animals were dinosaurs. They shared their habitats with many animals: other reptiles, mammals, amphibians and invertebrates.

Paleozoic WHAT CHARACTERISTICS MAKE A DINOSAUR? 1

2

The first characteristic is to have lived in the Mesozoic era. All those animals populating the Earth during earlier or later times are certainly not dinosaurs.

All dinosaurs lived on land. Even though some dinosaurs were able to swim for short distances, they never lived permanently in lakes, seas or rivers, like for instance cetaceans do. Those big marine reptiles that also lived in the Mesozoic were not dinosaurs. Even those reptiles flying across the sky at incredible speed, known as “pterosaurs”, were not dinosaurs.

dinosaurs

3

Dinosaurs walked on land; their legs were positioned directly under their body, keeping it raised from the ground. Today you can observe the same in mammals and birds. This adaptation made dinosaurs excellent walkers and runners and probably helped them to successfully survive for a very long time.

4

All dinosaurs were diapsids, which means that their skull had two holes (or fenestra) behind the eye sockets. These holes made their heads lighter and made room for the development of the masticatory muscles. Many reptiles were synapsids, because they had one hole; others were anapsids, because their skull had no holes at all.

CARNIVORES

TEETH AND FANGS We can learn about what an animal eats, how it finds food and if it chews it or swallows it whole, by looking at its teeth. And dinosaurs are no exception.

The type of food that was eaten determined the shape and the number of teeth of these reptiles; whilst the size of them simply depended on the dimensions of the animal. However, there were also dinosaurs without a single tooth, and those ones give paleontolgists many questions to answer about what their food was. Some of them, though, had a rigid and sharp beak instead of teeth, and that was enough to tear the leaves apart.

Predators like the Theropods had pointed teeth: some were straight, others were curved, very often with a serrated edge that would help tear the flesh of the prey apart. Carnivores’ teeth were not suitable for chewing: they were only used to hold the victim in a grip and to break it into pieces, which they then swallowed as a whole, like sharks and crocodiles do. T-rex’s teeth could reach the size of a banana. They numbered appriximately 50 to 60 and each had a different function depending on their position: the front ones would grab and hold the prey, the lateral ones would tear the flesh, which was then pushed into the throat by the ones at the back. Conical and non-serrated teeth indicate that the animal fed on fish instead. Spinosaurus, whose teeth resemble those of a crocodile, is an example of this.

CHINESE NEW YEAR CHINA

GRACE OF MONACO (1929-1982 AD) There are MOVIES in which a normal girl meets a prince through a peculiar set of events and ends up marrying him…this happened to Grace Kelly! When she started her career as an actress, she would have never guessed that she would be the protagonist of such a twist. She was a real diva, of a breath-taking beauty and with an extraordinary talent: the most important directors of the time fought to have her in their movies. It was on a movie set that she met her future husband, Prince Rainier in 1955. That same year she fulfilled her biggest dream by winning the Oscar, which is the most important award in world cinema. The following year she married Rainier, becoming the princess consort of MONACO, which is the second smallest country in the world (covering an area of only 0.78 sq mi – 2 sq km!). The Princess turned it into one of the most glamorous and exclusive destinations in the world, loved by celebrities (many of which were her friends). She had to give up her career as an actress and diverted her passion to others, organizing charity events and helping the less fortunate. She unexpectedly died in a car accident, leaving the memory of an extraordinary woman and A FAIRY-TALE PRINCESS.

LOUIS XIV or the SUN KING (1638–1715 CE) Being born within a royal court means attracting a lot of attention. Some would rather not have that, whereas others become famous precisely because they enjoy being the center of the world.

DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE MOST INTREPID CROWNED HEADS OF THE WORLD!

King Louis XIV of France was called the “Sun King”; everything had to rotate around him, like planets around a star. His motto was “I am the State” because he concentrated all powers in his hands alone. He deprived the aristocracy of any decision-making power and forced them to live with him in the vast palace at Versailles, a few miles from Paris, so that he could always keep an eye on them. He surrounded himself with art and beauty and hired the best artists of the time. His parties were legendary, with flamboyant costumes, special effects, and even fireworks. He spared no expense for his army, too, which in a few years increased from 65,000 to 400,000 soldiers. It was thanks to this immense military force that he transformed France into the greatest European power at the end of the 17th century. A whole series of legends were created around him. One of the most famous ones is that of the Iron Mask, a mysterious prisoner with a mask on his

face who was treated with the utmost respect. WHO COULD HE HAVE BEEN? Maybe a spy who knew important secrets? Or maybe the king’s twin? They are all fantasies that inspired copious literature on the character of this eccentric monarch.

ner and illustrator a. After attending the , she graduated as a has brilliantly illustrated

Snowflake HI, MY FRIEND, NICE TO MEET YOU! My name is Snowflake and, like any other unicorn, I can do magic. My magic powers are related to ice: I can make it snow or I can freeze over the water in lakes and rivers, even on a hot summer day. I love the cold, and I like sliding on my hooves as if they were ice skates. I am an artist when it comes to building snowmen. I’m not happy to just decorate them with carrots, sticks, and scarves; I make them move as if they were puppets, thanks to my magical horn.

Summit He is my best friend, and he is the best yeti at rock climbing that I know, even when the rocks are icy. He often helps me to reach places where my hooves can’t climb. He takes me in his enormous hands and lifts me up to the top without breaking a sweat; it’s as if I am as light as a feather.

Leaf GOOD MORNING! Please sit down on one of those tree trunks in the glade and listen carefully. As I always say to my students, nature speaks, you just have to open your ears and listen to it. My name is Leaf. I am a unicorn, but also a teacher. I sometimes use magic for teaching; I use my horn to trace drawings, which then come to life in the air. Learning becomes fun that way. Every now and again, I take my students on trips: into the mountains, to the river, or to the countryside...outdoor lessons are my favorite. A special moment on these trips is when we have a picnic. Eating together is such fun!

Rascal He’s the naughtiest of my students, but also the most generous. He sometimes goes overboard with his pranks, but he is a great classmate. If a friend is in trouble, he doesn’t think twice about it and runs to help.

STEGOSAURUS MY BACK IS COVERED IN PLATES, BUT THEY AREN’T DANGEROUS. l use them to warm, cool, and protect myself. I have lots of teeth, but they aren’t sharp because I only eat plants.

THE PLATES ON MY BACK ARE COLORED AND…THEY CAN MOVE! Sometimes I leave them laying flat along my back, but other times I raise my plates up toward the sky, like arrows.

IN TIMES OF TROUBLE, MY TAIL ACTS LIKE A WHIP, but I don’t like using it in that way. In cases of extreme danger, I’d rather just flee. I run away as fast as I can.

I eat lots of leaves! I am slow, and I run only if I see danger coming my way. If I can’t escape, then I use my enormous tail as if it were a long whip; it’s my best weapon.

I KNOW IT MIGHT SEEM STRANGE, BUT ALTHOUGH I AM VERY BIG, I AM NOT THAT HEAVY. What make me so big are my neck and my tail, which are really long, whereas the rest of my body is actually quite small.

Number of players: 2 Equipment: 12 pieces per player Aim of the game: to capture the opponents’ pieces

How to play: To start the game, every player, in turn, must position their piece on a space of their choice of the playing board. This preparation continues until both players have positioned all of their 12 pieces. Warning! In this phase you must not create a horizontal or vertical line of 3 consecutive pieces.

Because this is the actual aim of the game! During the match, in fact, each player, making one move at a time, chooses one of his pieces to move to an empty space, trying to form a row of 3 pieces in a horizontal, vertical but not diagonal line. Every time a player forms a row, he can choose to capture one of his opponents’ pieces. Remember: the rows that count are those with 3 pieces, not one more, not one less! The key is strategy, do not get caught out. The winner is the player that leaves his opponent with only 2 pieces.

Let’s Experiment Series ILLUSTRATIONS BY ROSSELLA TRIONFETTI - TEXT BY MATTIA CRIVELLINI

Learning comes best through experience, even better if children can do it at home. With simple and easy-to-find ingredients children will reveal the secrets of science through fun and real practice. Two characters will accompany children in this colorful series: the Professor will teach them the scientific explanation and the Little Robot will guide them in the practice. For each experiment there is also a “mess-o-meter” for parents to know how messy the experiment will be... don’t say we didn’t warn you!

, what DID YOU SAY IT S CALLED?

2021 TOKYO SUMMER OLYMPICS!

THE

LAMPADEDROMIA

Then there was the LAMPADEDROMIA, which was the first version of the relay race. Each team consisted of 40 members, each of whom had to run 82 feet (25 m) while holding a flaming torch aloft! It might seem hard to believe, but it did work like that! Today, there are only 4 sprinters, and they pass a “simple” baton. Definitely safer but less spectacular.

WHAT COMPETITIONS DID THE POTENTIAL CHAMPIONS COMPETE IN? THERE WERE MANY DISCIPLINES, AND SOME OF THEM WERE THE ANCESTORS OF MODERN SPORTS.

,

LET S DISCOVER THEM TOGETHER!

THE HOPLITODROMOS RUNNING First of all was RUNNING, in which the fastest athletes in Greece had to cover at least one “stadion.” No, it had nothing to do with football matches—a “stadion” was an ancient unit of measure (1 stadion corresponded to approximately 193 yards [177 m]—and the hardest race was 24 stadions long, which was 2.6 miles [4.2 km]).

And what about a race where the athletes carried over 40 pounds (20 kg) of iron and animal skins on their shoulders (also running barefoot)? The HOPLITODROMOS was a tough competition: only the strongest and best trained athletes could endure it.

These super athletes would run with their helmet on their head while wearing full war gear. Although this game no longer exists in the modern Olympics, it is still part of soldiers’ training.

12

13

HOW WERE THE PARALYMPICS CREATED? In 1948, a doctor named Ludwig Guttmann (with similar ideas to Pierre’s) decided to help the wounded from the Second World War by using sport as therapy. During the opening of the Olympic Games in London, he launched the Stoke Mandeville Games. Only 16 athletes took part, but it was a good start nonetheless! The first edition of the Paralympic Games (in Rome in 1960) saw 400 athletes from 23 countries sharing the same infrastructures and equipment as all Olympic athletes.

IT WAS THE bEGINNING OF A PROFOUND REVOLUTION: NEW SPORTS— MORE AND MORE INCLUSIVE—AND NEW ATHLETES WITH WONDERFUL STORIES! Every 4 years, thousands of athletes (in 2016 in Rio, there were 4,350) take part in another world-famous sporting event: the Paralympics (“para” stands for “parallel,” because they are organized along with the Olympics).

never give up:

the PARALyMPIc games We are still talking about fantastic champions, who break records and win medals. SO, WHAT IS SO SPECIAL AbOUT THEM? Some of them compete in wheelchairs, others use prosthetics that make them look like superheroes, others can’t see or hear, and others have a brain that functions in a special way.

THEY ARE ExCEPTIONAL MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE (AND EVERY PREjUDICE!). MANAGED TO bREAK THROUGH EVERY LIMIT

74

75

what a RECORD! CERTAINLY, EACH OLYMPIC GAMES HAVE GIVEN US ExCEPTIONAL STORIES AND bREATHTAKING

COMPETITIONS. HOWEVER, SOME ATHLETES HAVE REACHED SUCH ExTRAORDINARY HEIGHTS THAT THEY HAVE bECOME PART OF HISTORY.

For instance, swimmer MICHAEL PHELPS won 28 medals (8 in the same Games), beating gymnast LARISA LATYNINA, who was in second place among the “super athletes,” by 10 medals. There have also been talented athletes who stood out in more than one sport. For example, FRANK KUGLER triumphed in 3 different disciplines during the 1904 Saint Louis Olympic Games (wrestling, weightlifting, and tug-of-war).

France, Great Britain, Greece, and Switzerland hold the RECORD FOR PARTICIPATING IN THE MOST Olympic Games. The United States and Soviet Union (this was the name Russia and some neighboring countries used to have) have had the greatest number of MEDALS. Almost 3,000 for the USA—you would need a huge room to exhibit them all! These records penalize the smaller countries, though (and those where sport is not practiced much) because they didn’t take part in the first modern Games. And also, they have fewer inhabitants so they have fewer people to send to the Games!

INCREDIbLE, HUH? NObODY HAS MANAGED TO bREAK HIS RECORD!

Keeping the population in mind, the record goes to FINLAND (55.8 medals for every 1 million citizens).

AND WHAT WAS THE MOST OLYMPIC GAMES? SUCCESSFUL

The one in Atlanta, with 8.3 million tickets sold!

48

49

MYSTERIOUS OBJECTS HEAVY BALLS...

...AND HEAVY RACKETS!

Up until the 1950s, soccer balls (even the ones used in the Olympic Games) were sewn in an irregular way and they would become very heavy when soaked. THE REASON? The leather that was on the outside was not waterproof (which means that it absorbed water), so the ball would become very difficult to control.

Even tennis went through some small evolutions. For example, up until the late 1970s, rackets were made of wood, they weighed about 14 ounces (400 g), and their strings were of animal origin. Today, the materials are all synthetic and they are slightly lighter (although several players say that a racket that is too light makes their strokes less powerful!).

Furthermore, just think how painful it must have been when players tried to hit it with their head! The first modern balls were introduced in the 1970s and were black and white: these colors were chosen because they were well visible on TV (at that time, TVs didn’t have colorful images).

SO DANGEROUS! Speaking of wood, even the first types of skis were rigid and bulky, and the boots wouldn’t come off with a simple touch because they were actually attached to the skis.

THEY WERE DEFINITELY DANGEROUS AND NOT VERY PRACTICAL IN CASE OF…A SUDDEN URGE TO GO TO THE bATHROOM (IT CAN HAPPEN IN THE COLD!).

scheletro

cuore

62

come è fatto Un osso?

Estrai quindi l’osso e prova a piegarlo. Ci riuscirai senza romperlo?

63

I globuli bianchi
