COSTFORDisavoluntaryorganization,whichprovides technologicalassistanceforruraldevelopment.Itwas foundedandregisteredasanon-profitvoluntary organizationin 1984 byDr.D.R.Chandradutt,Dr.K.N.Rajand Mr.AchuthaMenon,theformerChiefMinisterofKerala.The ideaofCOSTFORDtookrootwhenMr.AchuthaMenonshowed interestinthealternativedesignphilosophyandbuilding materialsandtechniquespromotedbyMr.LaurieBaker.

COSTFORDstarteditsconstructionactivitiesin 1986. COSTFORDworksongovernmentaswellasprivate constructionwork.Theyhavecarriedoutlargerural developmentprojectsofCentralandStateGovernment agencies.CollectivelyCOSTFORDhasbeenabletoreleaseabout 20,000 buildingsinKerala.

COSTFORDattemptstousesomeoftheconstruction materialssuchaslime,bamboo,mudandexposedbricksand architecturalelementssuchastherat-trapbond,fillerslab (voidformer)roofingusedoftenbyLaurieBakerinhiswork inKerala.Fortheircoreactivities,COSTFORDissupportedby TheDepartmentofScienceandTechnology,Govt.ofIndia;the departmentofRuralDevelopmentGovt.ofIndia;the departmentoflocalSelfGovernment,Govt.ofKeralaand HousingandUrbanDevelopmentCorporation(HUDCO).

BakerhasservedastheChairmanofCOSTFORDandplayedan activepartintheearlyyearsofCOSTFORD.However,Laurie Bakerworkedbyhimself,directlywithhismasons,carpenters andworkmenandneverstartedaconventionalpersonal architecturalfirmofhisown.

Ar.P.B.Sajan,ChiefArchitectandJointDirectoratCOSTFORD,isacommitteddiscipleofLaurie Bakerfromthebeginningofhiscareer.HepassionatelypromotesLaurieBaker'sapproachto architectureandbuildingconstructionthroughprojectexecutionaswellasresearchand disseminationofknowledgeincosteffectivetechnologiesthroughpolicyadvocacyandnumerous trainingprograms.

Someofhisprojectsincludedesignofovertwothousandresidentialbuildingsindifferent economicranges,twentysixslumrehabilitationprojects,manyeco-restorationproject,redesign andexecutionoftribalhamlets,schoolbuildings,campusesandhospitals.Hiscurrentfocusin researchisonusingmudandbambooasanalternativetohighenergyconsumingbuilding materialsusedforconstruction.

Ar.AshamsRavi,AssociateCoordinatoratCOSTFORD,startedhisjourneyinthecompanyasan internintheesteemedorganization.He,likeP.B.Sajan,devotedlypromotesLaurieBaker’s principlesofarchitectureandconstruction.Hewillinglystandsuptoeducatestudents, professionalsandanylaypersonabouttheconstructionconceptsandtechniques.

Hisresidence,Canaan,HUDCONationalAwardwinningprojectforGreenBuilding,isaexisting exampleforsustainableconstructionmethodologiesthatcanbeincorporatedinanybuilding construction.ParticipatinginTEDtalk,lectures,workshopsonbambooanditsbuilding techniquesarehisleisurepursuits.

Hewasahumanistwhoworkedtirelessly forthewell-beingofthemarginalized.Baker completedseveralprojectswhichreflectedhis principlesnationwide.Hewasclosely associatedwithanumberofinstitutionsto adviceonmattersrelatingtocosteffective buildingtechnology.

TheLoyolaChapelwasbuiltonthecampusofLoyolaCollege.Thechapelistenmetrehigh, setinaloadbearingbrickstructurethatgainsitsstrengthfromawidecavitydouble-wall thatkeepsthetemperaturepleasantandenhancestheacousticsquality.Astrikingfeature ofthisBakerianaestheticsisamesmerizingvisualofaholy-crossinthesouthernwallof thejalliworkilluminatedbydivinelightfromaclerestorywindow.Thechapelispartofa largerbuildingthatalsohousesanauditoriumforvariousacademicevents.

KARIMADOM SLUM REHABILITATION

Itisaunique projectunderBSUP emphasizingpoor people’sneeds, commonfacilities, environmentalfriendlinessand costeffectiveness.

BRUNOPALIATH’SRESIDENCE

Theclientrequiredasmall,cozyresidenceforoneto live.Thesitewasdocumentedanddraftedby triangulating.Withthehelpofgooglemaps,the locationmapwasdraftedinease.Aftermeetingwith theclient,theplanwasfinalized,furtherafterwhich thesectionandelevationdrawingsweremadefor thesanctiondrawing.

GAYATHRI’SRESIDENCE

Theclientsrequiredtwoseparatehousesina singlecompound.Thesitewasabitchallenging duetotheleveldifferencefromtheroad.

Thesitewasinitiallydocumentedandwasdrafted bytriangulatingtheobtainedmeasurements. Latertheplansweredetailedoutforclient discussionafterthearchitecthaddesignedthe proposal.

JEMIMA’SRESIDENCE

Thisclientrequiredadoublestoriedhouse,in whichthegroundfloorandthefirstfloorwillbe partiallydwelledbythemandtherestwillbelet outforrentingcollegestudents.Theclientwas enthusiasticandwouldlovetoexploreallthe opportunitiespossibleintheirresidence’sdesign.

Regularsitevisitsweremadeforsupervisingthe workbeingexecutedandtodirecttheworkers.

Thesitehadanexistingshedwhichhadtobe dismantledpriortotheconstruction.The dismantlingwasthoroughlysupervisedsoasto preserveanymaterialspossiblethatcanbeused fortheextensionprojects.

Initsfinishingstage,thegrilldesignwas proposedoutofwhichtheclientsareyettochoose thestyleofdesignneeded.

Theplanset-outwasdoneonsitebythe architect,siteengineerandthemason.

KAVITHA’SRESIDENCE

Thesitewasprettychallengingastheplotwas previouslyusedasapaddyfield.Sincethewater contentwashigh,thetrenchwasdugtillthesand appearedandquarrywasteandrockswerepilled upandmadesuretheyweresettledtoavoid futuresettlingcracks.

Theofficecabinwaspreviouslydocumentedand theinteriorforfurniturearrangementwas proposedbythearchitectafterwhichtheplanwas detailedoutandrenderedforthepresentation.

Thedocumentedclassroomsweredraftedand givenfurniturearrangementproposalalongwith thecolourthemeandpattern.

Theportionoftheresortwasdocumented,draftedandthemodelsweremadelateron foratender.Thecottagesweredesignedinsuchamannerthattheydon’thaveany permanentstructurebuilt.
