Welcome

No Turning Back. How could we, how dare we, when we have come so far already? All around we see God’s truth being played out in a world that, for the most part, doesn’t know it. And it’s for these people that we move ahead in faith, seeking to be the army of young people who have taken up the mantle of the Three Angels’ Messages in order to proclaim it—without shame, and with no fear—to a world that desperately needs to know the wonderful truths that we have been so blessed with as Seventh-day Adventists. No Turning Back. Because what is there to turn back to, but to a life of sin, of empty pleasures, of vain and, ultimately, doomed things? No Turning Back because, as Jesus said: “No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62). This year we have prayerfully chosen a group of speakers who, in their own way, have helped point us the way forward, on what Jesus called the narrow path “that leads to life” (Matthew 7:14). I trust that, as you attend the meetings and seminars, you will be encouraged, uplifted, and determined more than ever to not only live out the Gospel but spread it to those who need to know the truths that we love and cherish so much, the truths in Christ that give us hope for a wonderful future, a future that this world does not and cannot offer anyone. No Turning Back. On the contrary, we as leaders of GYC want to encourage all who come to this year’s session to, unashamedly, “press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14). Welcome to GYC 2010. We pray it will be a life-changing experience for all of us.

- Justin McNeilus GYC President

Topics

A Crash Course on Daniel: Lessons from the Past for Living in the Present | 310

Michael Hasel & Norman McNulty

Are you dealing with challenges to your faith? Are you asking, ‘Where is God in my life?’ Do you have a desire to be part of something bigger than yourself? Are you concerned about facing the judgment? Unearth powerful principles for living, as did Daniel, a life of no turning back as you clearly grasp the allimportant teachings in the book of Daniel.

Adventist or Fragmentist: Avoiding Apostasy 101 | 349-350

David Shin

The history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is littered with accounts of apostasy and offshoot theological movements. Why have so many Seventh-day Adventists turned back from being part of the remnant movement? Why does history record so many “fragmentists” within the fold? In this seminar, David Shin explores the reasons people forsake the faith and digs deep to establish a confident foundation on which young people can build for continued faithfulness in the body of Christ. The mistakes of the past do not have to be repeated!

Adventist Women, Inc: Professional Women in God’s Service | 314-315

Magda Rodriguez & Amy Sheppard

Explore how to share your faith in the workplace, balance the varying life demands on a professional Adventist woman, and avoid common traps of a career. The presenters will also reflect on their real life experiences and offer tested principles for success as young Adventist professional women in today’s world.

The Alpha and the Omega: Postmodernism and the Emergent Gospel | 343-344

Rick Jaeger, Herbert Douglass & Don Mackintosh

This seminar provides a much-needed examination of the Emergent Movement that is sweeping through the evangelical, and Adventist, church. Rick Jaeger, Herbert Douglass, and Don Mackintosh explain the underlying post-modern culture—how it thinks, how it got here, where it is going, and how it deals with the concept of truth. The presenters tackle relevant questions: Can Adventism and postmodernism co-exist? Is the Emergent philosophy compatible with Scripture? Is it more relevant for young people than the Adventist message? This is a required seminar for all who have encountered these questions.

15 An Intelligent Faith: An Adventist Apologist’s Adventure | 307

Clifford Goldstein

Belief in God is logical and reasonable. In this seminar, examine rational arguments for the existence of God, uncover the logical fallacies committed by those who dismiss belief in God, and explore the challenges sin and suffering pose to the Biblical picture of a loving God. Clifford Goldstein also relates his amazing, experiential journey from hater of Christianity to believer in Jesus Christ.

Binding Up the Wounds: Jesus’ Ministry of Healing the Brokenhearted | 337-338

Tamara Conway & Nicole Parker

“[The Lord] heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3). Explore the beautiful process by which God heals emotional and spiritual brokenness, turning the stumbling blocks of our pasts into stepping stones for living lives that bring Him glory. Learn how divine and human love combine to create authentic spiritual community, a safe place to grow into what God calls us to be—free from the darkness of the past with no turning back.

By Beholding: The Mind-Shaping Influences of Media & Entertainment | 328-329

Scott Mayer, Brandon Mascarenas & Thom Mayer

From movies and television shows to music and video games, media infiltrates nearly every part of life. In this seminar, the presenters pull back the curtain to provide a behind-the-scenes look at the philosophies, methods, and goals of Hollywood media producers. Be warned of the dangers, and learn how to live a life of “no turning back” in a media-saturated culture.

Devoted Devotions: A Vibrant Devotional Life for the Last Days | 347-348

Taj Pacleb & Westney White

In a world of quick fixes and instant gratification, God invites us to be still in order to know He is God. Taj Pacleb and Westney White lead an exciting journey through Scripture to discover how young people can move past empty devotional routines and experience an intimate relationship with God. Learn how to hear His voice, know His heart, and do His will as you dwell “in the secret place of the Most High,” daily abiding “under the shadow of the Almighty.”

16

Topics

End-time Events & End-time Living: Adventism’s Message for an Expiring Planet | 325-326

Chester Clark, III & Don Mackintosh

Have you ever wondered if these really are the “last days”? Are you confused by the numerous opinions of how to prepare for the times in which we live? Don Mackintosh and Chester Clark investigate the fulfillment of end-time prophecies—the evidence is right in front of our eyes—and map out from Scripture the only safe course of action for our lives today.

Free at Last: How to overcome habits & challenges | 331-332

Chad & Fadia Kreuzer

From painkillers and nervous ticks to specific vocabulary and comfort foods, the human mind is readily enslaved to a variety of behaviors, habits, and actions. Join Chad and Fadia Kreuzer to discover the Biblical keys for overcoming habits such as difficulty forgiving, anger, eating disorders, substance abuse, and other personal addictions. Explore a range of principles for overcoming from the Bible, the latest health research, and scientific data. If you desire to be an overcomer or help in the ministry of liberty, this seminar is for you.

God’s Gift that Keeps on Giving: The Writings of Ellen G. White | 327

James Nix

Even before the formation of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, God spoke to Ellen White through visions and prophetic dreams. More than 150 years later, millions of people worldwide continue to be blessed by studying her writings. In this seminar, explore who Mrs. White was, how she prepared her books and articles for publication, and why her writings remain relevant today.

The Great Controversies: Relativism’s Beauty & Fundamentalism’s Beast | 345-346

Justin Kim

Within Adventism, hot topics and controversial issues are continually debated. For the young adult, it is easy either to be turned off by these theological and political fights or to be engaged on a premature level and be swept away by them. Pastor Kim addresses the labels of liberalism, conservatism, fundamentalism, and other “isms” as he explores Biblical principles that allow young people to move beyond superficial labels, see through the discussions, and strategically utilize the controversies to further the core issues of the Gospel.

17 The Inside and The Outside: Biblical Standards for Dress and Adornment | 302-303

Isaac Olatunji, Jr.

“Talk of Christ; and when the heart is converted, everything that is out of harmony with the Word of God will drop off” (Child Guidance 428). In a world fixated on fashion, sexuality, and mass media, young people often experience dissonance between what is on the outside and Who is living on the inside. In this powerful, Biblical seminar, Dr. Olatunji takes a Christ-centered approach to God’s standards for dress and adornment, providing confidence and encouragement to those confused and desiring something better today.

The Marked Bible: Trained and Equipped for Sharing God’s Word | Exhibit Hall

Scott Moore & Phillip Sizemore

The world desperately needs young men and woman who unselfishly extend the boundaries of God’s kingdom. In this practical, hands-on seminar, discover Biblical techniques and principles for “sowing” the Word of God anywhere and everywhere. Learn how to share and defend the teachings of Scripture with every truth centered in Jesus Christ. Bring a Bible—and take it home marked with everything you need to give Bible studies.

Mission Extreme: God’s Radical Calling for Your Life | 321-323

Alan Parker

God wants you to experientially discover what happens when you give your life over to His radical purposes. He desires you to find your calling, grasp His plan, and join Him in His mission for His glory. Alan Parker outlines from Scripture how to find your identity and purpose as part of God’s radical calling for your life. But be warned—following Him will result in a dramatically transformed life with no area left untouched.

Moved by the Word: The Transforming Power of Scripture in Your Life, Your Church, and Your World | 309

Bill Knott & Jay Gallimore

There’s no shortage of self-help books, commercial seminars, and mystical experiences that promise direction for your life. But there’s just one divinely-inspired, reliable and time-tested source of wisdom for you, your congregation, and the worldwide Seventh-day Adventist Church. Join Jay Gallimore, Michigan Conference president, and Bill Knott, editor of Adventist Review and Adventist World, for a lively four-part seminar that pushes past the platitudes and shows you how to reclaim Scripture as the foundation for your personal life and our life together as a church.

Radical Commitment: Nothing Less! | 316-317

Samuel Koranteng-Pipim & Jeffrey Rosario

The word “radical” evokes fear, even among Christians! But if the Bible is true, if our message is the Truth, if the “signs of the times” mean anything, and if “revival and reformation” are possible, then we must be radical for the Lord. The time has come for us to be ashamed of our superficial religious experience, mediocre performance, waffling positions, and the cheap vanilla faith that costs us nothing. “Radical commitment” is a call to Christian nonconformity. It is a plea to stand out and be counter-cultural. It is a challenge to change the world by the force of our Biblical commitment. Anything less would be irrational—and irrelevant!

Rock-Climbing 101: Strengthening the Foundations of Our Adventist Faith | 340-342

Mark Finley

While many claim the Adventist message is irrelevant in today’s relative world, Mark Finley stirringly affirms the eternal relevance of the Biblical Adventist message—even for today’s postmodern young adults. Be inspired by the absolute reliability of God’s Word and assured of the continued importance of the beautiful and distinctive Biblical heights held by Seventh-day Adventists.

Sacrificial Living: Managing God’s Resources God’s Way | 339

G. Edward Reid

In a fragile economy where securities are threatened and investments lose their value overnight, sound Biblical principles are needed for those living in the last days. Learn how to live life without debt, in harmony with God’s will, and free to financially support the work of God. Drawing on his decades of experience in personal finance and church stewardship, Ed Reid applies Biblical principles for true fiscal success in this generation

The Shaking & the Shaken: How to Face the Shaking of God’s Remnant | 345-346

P. Gerard Damsteegt

Is the shaking happening now or is it still future? Dr. Damsteegt provides an in-depth look as he examines this crucial topic in the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy. The events of the 2010 General Conference Session are analyzed, and its impact on the global church and relevance to the shaking is explored. Respond to the urgent, loving appeal of Jesus as you learn how to endure through to the end and receive the Latter Rain.

19 Till I Die: A Study on the Commonality of Tears, Blood & Sweat | 307

Sebastien Braxton

Do you want to stay fired up, ready to take over the world after GYC is over? Sebastien Braxton provides practical coaching on maintaining your commitment to Jesus as you live a powerful, Spirit-filled, changed life in the monotony of everyday and to the very day of death. In a society often devoid of lasting commitment, this seminar shares practical and relevant perspectives that will challenge your future and your spiritual commitment. Be sure to bring your paper, pen, and a prayerful spirit.

The Way Out: Overcoming Depression & Loneliness | 318-320

Neil Nedley & Angelo Grasso

In a society full of opportunity, wealth, and technology, depression and loneliness are at record levels. As an Adventist young adult, how does one maintain emotional wellness when confronted with disappointment and discouragement? What steps can be taken to remedy depression and heal from the pain of loneliness? Dr. Nedley and Angelo Grasso provide practical, Biblical insights for a vibrant, positive, and fulfilled Christian life.

With All Your Mind: How To Think Like A Christian | 308

David Asscherick & Nathan Renner Thinking is something that is taken for granted. That is, we don’t think enough about thinking. What is the right way to think? Should Christians think differently than non-believers? What role, if any, should philosophy play in the life of the Christian? And what exactly is philosophy anyway? This seminar will address the subject of thinking generally and of thinking like a Christian specifically. Too often Christians allow others to do their thinking for them. This must stop. Find out how. Come reclaim your thinking, and, thus, your mind.

About

Who We Are

Generation of Youth for Christ (GYC) began in 2002 when a diverse group of Adventist public university students envisioned a multi-cultural, youth-led organization committed to upholding the distinctive beliefs of Adventism and training young people for ministry. Since then, annual GYC conventions have attracted and equipped thousands of young adults passionate about hastening Christ’s return. A supportive ministry of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, GYC is a non-profit organization in the state of Michigan. It is governed by a board of directors and supported by its official sponsors: Adventistlaymen’s Services and Industries (ASI) and the Center for Adventist Ministry to Public University Students (C.A.M.P.U.S.)–a division of the Michigan Conference Public Campus ministries.

Our Mission Statement

There exists, today, an army of dedicated young people within the Seventh-day Adventist church who yearn to demonstrate Nehemiah’s leadership, Daniel’s integrity, Mary’s humility, Paul’s passion for evangelism, and Christ’s love for God and humanity. It is the goal of GYC and its members to seek and galvanize such young people. We aim to mobilize existing youth and young adult ministries that are fully committed to the distinctive message and mission of the Adventist church towards the proclamation of the Three Angels’ Messages.

Our Aim

Generation of Youth for Christ seeks to equip and inspire Seventh-day Adventist youth and young adults to be ambassadors for Christ in their respective places of work and study by: • Providing Biblical training in the form of participatory workshops, Bible studies, and inspirational messages • Fostering and encouraging Christian fellowship among young people from diverse geographic, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds • Creating networking opportunities for Adventist young people and youthoriented ministries • Encouraging young people to assume leadership responsibilities in the Seventhday Adventist Church by employing their experience and talents in planning and presenting the annual conference and other events

An Exemplary and Abundant Lifestyle

in recreation, entertainment, dress, and healthful living

An Enthusiasm for Service

A Commitment to the Seventh-day Adventist Church

as God’s Remnant Church, by supporting and upholding its principles, organization, and leadership

An Attitude of Humility and Cordiality

as we seek to clarify, articulate, and defend the Biblical teachings of the Seventh-day Adventist Church

Conferences

GYC 2002 — “Pentecost: He Will Do It Again”

Pine Springs Ranch, Southeastern California

The first GYC reached maximum capacity when 400 people registered and registration had to be closed early. With an emphasis on spiritual revival, the theme reminded young people that God can and will repeat the miracles He has performed in the past.

GYC 2003 — “Higher than the Highest”

Ann Arbor, Michigan

Over 1,000 youth and young adults were challenged by a realization of the necessity for excellence in every sphere of life. Attendees were inspired to reach “Higher than the Highest” – to give God their best and surrender every aspect of their lives to Him.

GYC 2004 — “Carry the Light”

Sacramento, California

Witnessing and evangelism as a way of life were emphasized to the more than 1,800 attendees of GYC 2004. This was pragmatically implemented when over 600 young people knocked on upwards of 5,000 doors and enrolled over 800 people in Bible studies.

GYC 2005 — “Now is the Time”

Chattanooga, Tennessee

The 3,600 young people in attendance at GYC 2005 were impressed with the nearness of Christ’s return, and encouraged to prepare their own hearts and lives for His return. Over 1,200 Bible study interests, were followed up by lay Bible workers in preparation for an evangelistic series held in the Chattanooga area by Mark Finley.

GYC 2006 — “By Every Word”

Baltimore, Maryland

More than 4,000 young adults were infused with a desire to wholeheartedly embrace a life of total surrender to Biblical principle. Hundreds of doors were knocked on in preparation for an evangelistic series after GYC.

41 GYC 2007 — “Be”

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Although a low turn-out was anticipated because of scheduling problems with the convention center and because the meeting coincided with examination week for many students, over 2,900 young people packed into the Minneapolis convention center, listening to a call to BE God’s people at the end of time. Many responded, braving the freezing cold of Minneapolis, to knock on thousands of doors—sharing the warm love of Jesus Christ.

GYC 2008 — “For This Purpose”

San Jose, California

GYC 2008 in San Jose, California hosted its seventh annual conference, themed “For This Purpose.” Interesting speakers such as Justin Kim, Randy Skeete, Radim Passer, Chelsy Jourdan, Alistair Huong, Shawn Boonstra, and more, led us in studying how we can reflect Christ’s character. This conference was life-changing! Over 5000 attendees discovered themselves thinking and planning differently – truly finding purpose in life.

GYC 2009 — “Unashamed”

Louisville, Kentucky

The GYC 2009 conference, themed “Unashamed”, was based on the verse in Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.” To be unashamed of the gospel is to proudly proclaim it wherever you are. Paul let nothing hinder him from spreading the truths of God’s word, and today we also want to preach the good news in whatever we do. This conference will be looking at how one can live evangelistically, even if he or she is not an “evangelist.”
