From human’s perspective, the Great Ocean Road plays an important role in connecting local towns and tourist attractions. However, if we look from nature’s perspective, these towns and roads are big disruptions to nature. Existing human settlements keep expanding into nature habitats, destroy them and create segregation. This project is to test alternative settlement model with dissolved boundaries between human and nature.

COHABI-LAB

The Cohabi-Lab is a living laboratory for testing possible cohabitation models between human and all other living things. Spaces in the Cohabi-Lab are designed based on deep understanding on the symbiosis relationship between local flora and fauna. Boundaries between human and nature slowly dissolve. New stories between all species are created. Tourist and local communities are invited to explore the Cohabi-Lab, purchase local products and learn from their new relationship with nature. The lab showcases a new model of life for our future generations. Learnings from this experiment will be used to improve or create new settlements for cohabitation.

SYMBIOSIS RELATIONSHIPS

between human, vegetation and animals on the site

This diagram illustrates different habitat shapes of local species. Image on the next page mapped out some existing symbiosis relationships between human and local vegetation and animals. Design of the Cohabi-Lab will based on these relationships.

FIRST DISTURBANCE ECO OVERPASS

Our first disturbance is an eco-overpass. It sits above the GOR and enables animals to walk on it which reconnects the nature habitat that was divided by the GOR.

LOCATION & STRUCTURE

The eco-overpass sits right above the great ocean road at the fringe of Apollo Bay township. It will grow vertically with more testing sites on top and becomes a big vertical monument.

Spaces at different height presents different settlement model between human and animals. Tourist and local communities are welcomed to visit, purchase local products and learn from their new relationship with nature. Learnings from these experiments will be collected to improve the design of our existing settlement or create new cohabitat.

CHAPTER 1 FLOWER

Chapter 1 is the eco-overpass. The dome will be covered by soil and vegetation. Kangaroos and other animals are attracted to explore on it.

CHAPTER 1 FLOWER

Their waste will fertilise the soil and feed dung beetles who will also improve the quality of the soil. When flower blooms, the spaces under the dome in the shades are designed to attract bees who will pollinate the flowers.

22
23

CHAPTER 2 HONEY FACTORY

Extra honey produced by bees will be send to the honey factory and turned into honey products. People can enjoy the nature, purchase honey products and also learn about the animal who lives here.

24
25

CHAPTER 3 WASTE PROCESSING

Sea birds like to collect human waste to build their nest, however these waste sometimes is harmful to seabirds. In chapter 3, human waste are turned into non-harmful materials by the waste processing station. Seabirds can build nests on the climbing wall, which is a part of the sports center for people.

26
27

CHAPTER 3 WASTE PROCESSING

Human can use the processed waste to make crafts in the workshop and sale in the sunday craft market.

CHAPTER 4 SILK FACTORY

Chapter 4 is the world of silkworm. The faeces of silkworms can feed the fish in the pool. The silt at the bottom of the pool can fertilize back to the mulberry trees. We have a workshop for reproducing silk productions and tourists can buy them as well as the fish.

CHAPTER 5 HARVEST

Chapter 5 builds on mutual relationship between farmers and birds. The bottom level is farm lands. Platforms on the columns are spaces for birds to rest and drink water. Farmers can benefit from birds because they can eat huge number of pests.

In winter, the bar at the top level will be full of people to celebrate the good harvest.

33

CHAPTER 5 HARVEST

Using a traditional method, people harvest indigenous grass and grind them into flour for baking bread. The heat from baking will be used to heat the hot spring which is a fantastic place for people to relax.

CHAPTER 6 CHORUS

Chapter 6 is a story about a concert hall for both human and birds. The stage consists of a small lake and a jungle of bird nests. When there is no concert, people can still sit around and enjoy birds singing different voice. People can also play music with the birds.

THE RIBBON

The Ribbon is the transport system of the Cohabi-Lab which connects different levels of the structure. It provide people with multiple transport options. At the bottom is the cable car for people who want to travel fast. People can also choose to walk around using the stairs at the top of the ribbon. This drawing shows one of the cable car station next to the silk factory.

40

THE FUTURE

In the future, successful cohabitation models that tested in the Cohabi-Lab are transplanted into the existing settlement or create new settlement of cohabitation. Cohabitation become a new life style and cities are changed to provide habitat for all species.
