I believe in the relation between sensory perception, the well-being of the user, social interaction and social participation within designed environments. These are the elements of my architecture. Social interaction and participation are essential. These activities cannot be forced, but rather spontaneous. The curiosity of people passing by should be stimulated, people should be allured by activity. My design approach can be described as ‘trigger to meet’

AGE FRIENDLY CENTRE

INTRODUCTION The rapid Dutch ageing population has been putting pressure on the health care situation. As a result health care regulations have been changed, causing people to live independently as long as possible. This will have an impact on existing neighbourhoods, which means that the amount of older residents will increase. In the new situation it is important to discover how these people will be able to manage their own health and well-being. I have done research in age friendly concepts in order to discover how this will support future neighbourhoods. I’ve discovered that healthy aging in an important concept for independent living. This concept exists of physical AND social aspects of the built environment. Moreover, the emphasis has been put on social cohesion of different age ranges. The research has resulted in a multi functional community centre (MFC), which could also function as a guideline for supporting age friendly neighbourhoods.

The MFC is a transparent volume with small boxes. This combination should tempt visitors to participate in the exposed activities, which take place indoors and outdoors. These are connected by a ramp which functions as an explorational route. The main goal was to stimulate social interaction and participation of the surrounding residents. Creating a physical age friendly environment is makes the building accessible. However, creating opportunity for interaction and social life supports the well being psychologically.

CENTRAL PARK community of healthy citizens

Project : The Cube Theme : Society & Architecture Location : Markermeer, The Netherlands Date : Spring 2012 Professor : Dr. J.C.T. (Jacob) Voorthuis INTRODUCTION This project is based on ‘The Republic’ written by Plato (380BC). It exists of dialogues discussing the moral and philosophical aspects of an ideal community, such as education and justice. We were given the task to project our view and Plato’s view on high density cities of modern society. This has resulted in a cubical city of 1x1x1 km³, which exists of a 3D grid of steel structures. In this project I was responsible for the public space of the modern platonian city. I designed a park of 500x500m which functions as the main public space for one million citizens. Each part of the modern platonian community exists of citizens who have to their own task. Modern research has shown that seperation of work and recreation in daily life can enhance the productivity and well-being of the individual. Therefore I’ve designed a park with wo main functions. Firstly, its multi functional character provides the citizens in their needs. It stimulates differentiated social and recreational participation. Secondly, the park is designed as a healing environment, which simulates different senses of the human body. Being more aware of the senses could contribute to the well-being of the individual.

BOOMPJES 60 - 68 community support

social participation & social inclusion

Project : Transformation of an office building to a mixed-use building (residential, community, commercial) Phase : SO Location : Rotterdam Date : 2016 Team : Robert Winkel (owner, architect), Michiel van Loon (architect) Robert Platje (project manager & building technology specialist), Yan Hang Lo (junior architect) Tasks : mass study, facade design, residential study, illustrations Program(s) : Autocad, Sketchup, Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator

INTRODUCTION The Boompjes 60 – 68 is an office building at a prominent location along the river Maas with a magnificent panoramic view. At the same time on the other side it is located near the urban qualities of Rotterdam with a surprising view over the city centre. Different models were proposed such as a new iconic model and a transformation model, both adaptive to economic demands. In each proposal the office will become a sustainable building mixed-use building existing of apartments, community spaces and commercial spaces. The layout of the residential part has a flexible concept in order to adapt to the changing demands in types of apartments. The commercial spaces are situated on the ground floor. Together with the characteristics of the environment the parking garage and storage spaces are hidden from the street, resulting in an active and alluring plinth.

De Generaal Project : Transformation from office building to a residential building with a commercial plinth Phase : VO, DO, OMV, SALES PHASE Location : Rijswijk Date : 2016 - 2017 Team : Robert Winkel (owner, architect), Michiel van Loon (architect), Robert Platje (project manager & building technology specialist), Frank Huibers (architect), Ed de Rooij (architect), Roberto Magnanini (junior architect), Danielle Persson (junior architect), Yan Hang Lo (junior architect) & Bianca Diaconu (trainee) Tasks : facade study, housing study, OMV drawings, 3D modeling, visualisations and sales documents (making and supervision) and aestethic supervision Program(s) : Autocad, Sketchup, Vray, Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator INTRODUCTION The former headquarters of the Belastingdienst (Dutch tax authorities) in Rijswijk will be transformed into residential building ‘De Generaal’. A initiative of Aertgeerts Bouwgroep. Together with EyeOnProperty, we have developed a smart plan to transform this centrally located office building into a flexible and sustainable apartment complex for youth and seniors. With a new glass façade and internal renovation the residential spaces will have a great view around.

Part of the ground floor is reserved for commercial facilities, such as restaurants and cafés. The attractive and lively plinth will help to improve the quality of public space and the connection with the surrounding area. The existing basement of the former building will be reused to house the individual storage rooms.

A floor height of 3 meters and glass from floor to ceiling gives these apartments unique spatial qualities. This type of living offers a great addition to the current residential market in Rijswijk which consists mainly of single-family rowhouses and tenement houses.
