Desert Hideout Housing units for the future Competition: Open Architectural Competition Date: Fall 2013 Project Type: Residential Team: Yannis Foulakis, Konstantinos Lentzos Location: Badain Jaran Desert, China Concept A major global and ecological problem is the increased danger of desertification caused by climatic variations in combination with human activities that put unsustainable pressure on fragile soils. Fertile land is gradually being transformed into deserts due to global warming and overtaken by arid regions and deserts at an alarming rate of thousands of square miles per year. As a consequence, people nowadays are forced to abandon these regions as food resources become more and more scarce and the living conditions are intolerable to live in. In the present work we take a short-term approach based on current science and technology, which provide protection from the unpleasant weather conditions that occur in dry lands. Perspective Section
View of the housing units at the desert
Idea For this project we have selected the Badain Jaran Desert in China as a representative region apparently among the harshest on earth. This desert is home to some of the tallest stationary dunes on Earth and features over 100 spring-fed lakes that lie between the dunes, some of which are fresh water while others are extremely saline. This desert falls under extremely arid climatic zones as the average annual rainfall is only between 50-60mm and during the winter and spring there are very strong winds.

Desert Hideout | Housing units for the future
Desert hideout | Housing units for the future Unit Space Analysis The inside of the units is subdivided into two major parts, the sheltered one which contains the kitchen, the hallway, the bedrooms and the bathroom and the open-air that accomodates the living room. Placement and Shell usefullness
Section
The foundation of the residential model can be placed on arid areas under bare dry patches of deserts. The shell of the structure has been designed to protect the residential units from unexpected sandstorms, harsh temperatures and intense sun rays. However, when the weather is pleasant the shell can be elevated through some structural mechanisms so as to allow the air and the sunlight to flow inside the interior of the living units. Each structural model accommodates three individual residential units. The main atrium can be regarded as a common space for all the residents. Shell Mechanism Through the help of its structural mechanisms the shell of the structure can easily open and close, depending on the given weather conditions of the desert and in this way it can allow the inner part of the structure to adapt to its living conditions and protect itself from the event of extreme weather conditions such as windstorms. Central Atrium The inner atrium of the housing units serves as the main public space for the tenants, it provides light and air inside the units and also forms the central core of the unit. Simultaneously, by planting the ground of the atrium, a microclimate is created in order to improve the living conditions inside the units.

Skylights The skylights of the shell are used to enlighten the interior of the apartments when it is closed under unpleasant weather conditions.

Train Lines Library with Workshops Academic Project: Studio 5 | Supervisor: Konstantinos Grivas Date: Fall 2011 Project Type: Library Team: Yannis Foulakis, Konstantinos Lentzos Location: Patras, Greece Concept
West Birdseye View
The aim of this project was to design a library building and workshops. The plot is located at the seafront of the city of Patras beside the railway lines. The form is designated by the need to retain the sparse vegetation already existing in the plot. The idea of the morphological design originated from the virtual railway lines network. Three different lines interconnected constitute three distinct building complexes, each of which intends different uses. Amphitheatrically located with a view to the nortwest seafront these blocks follow an elevational hierarchy.
North Birdseye View
The Design Thus the main building block which hosts the library and the Reading Room is situated at the highest point of 8m from the ground, which renders it sunny while fully revealing the view. The main building blocks grow soaring over 4m from the ground allowing free space for the creation of a public zone. The intermediate building block constitutes an elevated passage from one end of the plot to the other and an introduction to the main building, while the lowest block which develops in ground level follows an underway path leading to the underground conference room.

An Ancient Grave Archaeology Museum at Aedonia Academic Project: Studio 6 | Supervisor: Dimitra Katsota Date: Spring 2012 Project Type: Museum, Exhibition Team: Yannis Foulakis, Konstantinos Lentzos Location: Aedonia, Korinthos, Greece The place The village Aedonia in Nemea is renowned for the Mycenaean burial treasures in the ground. In the period 1978-1980 several Mycenaean tombs excavated were found to be extensively looted. From the complex of these chamber tombs comes the famous “Treasure of Aedonia, which comprises gems and jewelry, gold rings, semiprecious stones such as amber and faience.
Concept The aim of this work was the creation of a building complex to house the new museum hosting the ancient treasures of the Myceneaen burial places as well as several utility rooms. The successful rapport of the building with the landscape was a challenge. Apart from the exhibits showroom the complex hosts 6 units of temporary residence, a cafeteria, a restaurant, an artists workshop, a lecture theatre, storage spaces and a garage.

Housing Complex Housing Units at Eleonas industrial area of Athens Academic Project: Studio 7 | Supervisor: Yannis Aesopos Date: Fall 2012 Project Type: Residential, Urban Team: Yannis Foulakis, Konstantinos Lentzos Location: Athens, Greece
Concept This is a plot in the heart of Eleonas, an industrial area of great significance for the city of Athens, with many factories, abandoned buildings and unused space. To the north side the plot abuts on Iera Odos street, to the west side on the stream of Prophet Daniel and to the east on the Agricultural University. View from the entrance road of the Housing Complex
Birdseye View from Iera Odos
Idea The idea is to partition the land into strips based on the archeology of pre-existing buildings of the area and redefine their character. The configuration of the plot in lanes has resulted in the creation of theme zones: public space that grows on ground level, the elevated complex residence and the underground fields with a distinct character to meet users’ needs. These stripes end up to the stream of Prophet Daniel and create an oblong zone of entertainment.

Versions of Utopia Bridges at Attiki Odos in Athens Academic Project: Studio 8 | Supervisor: Yannis Aesopos Date: Spring 2013 Project Type: Urban, Transport Team: Yannis Foulakis, Konstantinos Lentzos Location: Athens, Greece Concept Attiki Odos is the latest and most important road axis of Athens. It is a project created on the occasion of the 2004 Olympic Games and links the eastern El. Venizelos Airport with the west exit of Attica towards Korinthos-Patras. The violent intervention in the urban fabric due to the establishment of the underpath highway results in the severance of the north from the central part of Athens thus posing accessibility issues in various neighborhoods. Idea The aim of this project is the invention in the form of bridging the north and south sections of Attiki Odos as well as the integration of programs which will facilitate citizens’ daily life. The unfamiliar building complex comprises a range of typical urban facilities, thematic areas and recreational spaces. Car access is possible through the exit stream from the airport. Perspective Section A-A΄
Design Thus a system of elevated platforms in the form of folding ribbons is developed creating different spatial experiences through the promotion or concealment of sunlight. This design is subject to certain conditions such as the link between pedestrian and vehicle, city and vehicle, pedestrian and highway.

Regeneration of Mikrolimano Open International Competition Competition: Open Architectural Competition Architects: Tsabikos Petras Architectural Studio Architect in Charge: Tsabikos Petras Collaborating Architects: Yannis Foulakis, Vasiliki Daskalaki, Ioanna Iliadi Project Year: 2014
Concept Piraeus landscape is characterised by the diverse terrain and the great length of the coastline. The sea constitutes a collective point of reference for the people of Piraeus and the walk next to it is a timeless and cross-cultural experience that extends from Piraiki and Pasalimani to Kastella, Mikrolimano and Faliro. The composite formation of the proposal is organized aroung the creation of a broad promenade along the coast and in direct contact with the water element of the channel and the natural harbor of Mikrolimano. The walk constitutes a joint experience for the region as well as the central axis of 10 thematic areas and plateaus which highlight and activate the particular and cultural features of the area.
View from the new coastline
A city for pedestrians and cyclists The aim is to give priority to the pedestrian and cyclist and minimize car use (traffic regulation, setting of parking and loading space) as well as the transfer of parked vehicles to appropriate parking areas to reverse the disproportionate presence of asphalt over the limited number of pavements. The proposal is for a one-way system along Dilaveri and Koumoundourou coastline in traffic mild street form.
Urban Analysis The aim is the local and ultra-local connection of the area with the wider area of Attica to restore smooth and organic connection to the metrostation of Faliro and the tram. The crosslinks to Kastella and the sport facilities of Peace and Friendship stadium are reinforced through Papanastasioy Avenue and the trolley line. A cycle lane leading to the coast is developed connecting the two main squares.

Concept The first prize winner of a Greek design competition in Greece, which challenged participants to redesign an existing structure into an archaeological museum, this proposal by Tsabikos Petras Architectural Studio examines both the reintroduction of green areas into the city and relationship among city, sea, and coast. The scheme follows the lead of a north-south and east-west axis which present a pedestrian connection between the museum and a public square, and an archaeological site with a second public square, respectively. The museum seeks to form an effortless transition from urban to natural landscapes. The city collides with the museum and reaches toward the sea as an “urban deck,” simultaneously speaking to the urban presence through close proximity to the city and forming a connection to the natural by revealing views of the coastline and sea. This unique layout that bonds city, coast, and sea creates an “urban entrance” for the museum, strengthening the connection between the visitors and the sea by drawing them through the urban environment. The landscape of the site incorporates both man-made and natural elements. The engineered form is made of natural earth covered with plants, and as it interacts with the existing landscape, forms a depression which collects rainwater. A second “landscape entrance” emerges from the relationship of the two landscapes and their interaction with the urban deck, connecting visitors to a sense of place before entering the museum. The museum itself is informed by the archaeological site and the historical character created by the fortification structures nearby, namely ancient walls. These walls speak to the boundary between land and sea, just as the permanent exhibit’s wall acts as the boundary between the exhibit itself and the accompanying activity. In this way, the museum transports the historical presence of Peiraeus within its walls, which act as continuous paths through the museum, ultimately releasing visitors in alignment with the archaeological site. To further emphasize education in archaeology, an additional route through the museum highlights the restoration process to visitors, giving them a close look at the work being done on the site through display windows.

Versions of Isolation Residence Units at Trizonia Island Academic Project: Design Thesis | Supervisor: Yannis Aesopos Date: October 2015 Project Type: Residential, Bangalows Team: Yannis Foulakis, Konstantinos Lentzos Location: Trizonia Island, Greece
Perspective Section Birdseye View
Content Τhe content of the thesis has to do with residence in Greece after the economical crisis and is directly related to the Greek participation in the Biennale 2015 in Venice. The basic factor of the project was the choice of the area which would host our intervention. This is a 2.5-square-kilometer island and is accessible by regular communication via boat from the village of Hania. Trizonia is the largest island of the Corinthian Gulf and the only habitable one with a population of 156 residents. The island has preserved its traditional color and natural beauty while wheeled traffic is prohibited. The nearest town on the island is Patras at a distance of 40 km. Athens is 250 km from Trizonia. The intervention area is located in the northwestern part of the island and is developed on an area of 400 square meters. The island meets all of the criteria of the scenario of architectural intervention and summarizes all the hallmarks of the Greek countryside. The Idea The idea is the creation of a central path and a sequence of secondary offshoots which lead the visitors to three different neighborhoods of housing units. The path immerses the visitor in the ground concealing the view and eliminating sunlight and contact with nature leading him to a controlled artificial environment. Then it leads him to his personal housing unit granting him what it previously deprives him of. The target of this action is the enhancement of the experience of a claustophobic trench and the absolute exposure to the isolaterd environment of the island and the contrast between artificial and natural.

The entrance
View from the trench
Entrance is through the central 4m wide path to the east section of the intervention region leading to the rundown square through which the users move towards housing unit neighborhoods. Users can approach the sea through the extension of the central path leading to a wooden jetty towards the west side of the intervention region.
The trenches Use of the trenches aims at the achievement of the optical isolation scenario through the concealment and the promotion of the view as well as to the enhancement of this experience. Also through the path undergrounding we achieve the smoothing of topographical altitudinal gradients. 66
The role of View
The contact with nature and the transition to artificial Concealment of the View
The transition from the artificial intervention to nature and the users exposure to it before their stay at the bangalows is achieved with the elimination of the secondary paths trench and the graphistic fading out of the artificial to the natural ground.

The square The dug out square where you come to through the main entance route and which houses the main reception forms the core of the design intervention. From the square the visitor follows the corresponding secondary route depending on the neighbourhood that hosts his personal unit.
2
The significance of the view
1΄
The square is the point where the natural environment is minimized to achieve maximum sight concealment. From the square secondary paths are notched creating the opposite experience. The terraces contribute to the gradual revelation and direction of the view before the user gains exposure to nature.
