ENGAGEMENTS
WHAT EVERY BRIDE KNOW
needs to
The engagement session is one of our favorite parts of our time together because it gives you both a chance to be in front of our cameras before you get married, which is going to make your wedding day experience feel so smooth, seamless and comfortable. Not only that, but we get to create something so special together! You’re going to be married for over fifty years, but you only get to be engaged for this short period of time. We’re so excited to capture the only time in your life when you get to be each other’s fiancées.

LOGISTICS We love shooting at gorgeous locations. We recommend two locations max for engagements. A general rule of thumb is the more locations and outfits, the less images but the more variety you’ll have! We can do sunrise sessions if necessary. We require sunrise shoots for those who want to take portraits in very crowded locations like the Cherry Blossom Festival in DC. We love to travel to shoot! However, if we’ve never been to your desired location, we may need some advice for where to park and your favorite spots.
CHOOSING TIME & DATE We’re natural light specialists because we believe that natural light from the sun and its reflections, creates photographs that feel fresh, timeless and true to you as a couple. We begin all engagement sessions two hours before the scheduled sunset during “the golden hour,” when the light is the dreamiest. Use a sunset calculator online to determine the scheduled sunset for the date and location you’d like to do your session. Then, just subtract two hours to figure out your start time. Remember, the sun sets much earlier during the colder months of the year and much later during the warmer months, so make sure to factor that in when choosing your engagement session date, especially if you’re taking time off work or have evening plans afterward. To get the most out of your session, please plan a buffer when getting ready so you can arrive a few minutes early. We’re only able to shoot when natural light is still in the sky, so we’ll want to take advantage of every minute we have together before the sun goes down. If you’re wearing two outfits, save your favorite one for the second half, and if you’re wearing only one, arrive in that.

ENGAGEMENT PREP It’s always a little intimidating to have your pictures taken. Even if it’s just a photo on an iPhone that is taken by a friend, we still want to look nice, make sure nothing is in our teeth and that our hair is behaving! The most important thing is to wear clothing that you feel amazing in! Here are some tips for outfits and accessories that will help you prepare for your session.
TIPS FOR YOUR SHOOT • Don’t try to match. Try to pick outfits and accessories that coordinate instead. If everyone wore the exact same color at

DESTINATION ENGAGEMENTS
Your engagement session includes our travel time anywhere in the Twin Cities Metro area. If you’d like to go somewhere outside the city, we’re up for the adventure! We love traveling! We’ve done engagement sessions from coast to coast and everywhere in between, so if we’re already going to be in or near an area you’ve always dreamed of doing your photos and we can coordinate our schedules, let’s set it up. We’d love to make it work! If you’d like us to meet you in a destination outside of Minnesota for your engagement session where we don’t already have plans to visit, just let us know and we can get you a custom travel quote.

(or two!) into their closet! Long, flowy dresses and skirts look amazing on camera because they bring extra movement to the photos. Especially when juxtaposed with nature, like the desert, forest, plains or beach. Cute, shorter-length dresses photograph beautifully as well. Dresses and skirts tend to look most stunning on camera because they really flatter the female body — which is probably why the red carpet is always full of so many dresses and not very many pantsuits! We recommend avoiding pants and shorts for your session, and saying yes to a dress or two!
Heels elongate women’s legs making them look fabulous. Closed-toes heels in particular look great on camera because they carry out the line of your leg all the way down to your toe. If your toes are showing in a peep-toe heel, you might want to schedule a pedicure before your session so you don’t regret letting your feet show. These little tricks make all the difference! Pairing an accessory or two with your outfit can really help bring some extra dimension to your images. Big statement necklaces bring a lot of pop to the photos, while the smaller,

one or two? it’s up to you! Most of our brides who choose two outfits will bring one “wow” dress, and then another shorter sun dress or cocktail dress for a more casual “us on a date” feel. But if you want to bring two “wow” dresses and forgo the more casual dress altogether, give yourself permission to do it! The camera loves runway-esque apparel and so do we! Remember though, you don’t have to bring two looks if it’s too stressful or you’d rather just stick to one fabulous look. Just one outfit that you love will be so much better than one outfit you love paired with another you’re not very excited about. So, one or two? It’s really up to you!

YOUR SESSION Want your engagement images to look more editorial? Bring a little extra something with you! A freshly-picked bouquet for you to hold, or fresh flowers to put on something else, like a bicycle basket, tree swing or picnic basket, is a fun way bring a little extra romance to everyday objects. Whether it’s larger items like classic cars or smaller ones like blankets or hats, even incorporating just one extra styled item could be a fun way to make your session more unique.

CHOOSING COLORS When choosing colors for your outfits we recommend selecting lighter tones and more muted shades. By avoiding ultra-bright, bold colors, it will help bring all the attention to your faces and let the eye focus on the way you feel about each other. The camera loves shades of soft pink and muted blues, mixed with sophisticated light neutrals like heather gray, creams, leather brown and white. That softer color palette fits beautifully into almost all natural outdoor environments.
COORDINATING THE LOOKS
QUICK TIPS • Bring a pair of flats to wear when moving from place to place. Your feet will thank you later! • Don’t forget, your ring will be center stage, so give yourself permission to get it cleaned and your nails done, too! • Skip the spray tan. Although it might seem counter-intuitive, we recommend that you do

Most of our brides choose their dress first and then put together their fiancé’s outfit based on that. That’s why we have a section for each of you.

fashion tips FOR HIM AS LONG AS HE’S GOT THAT SUIT AND TIE From James Bond to Don Draper, men look most striking in a well-tailored suit. If he doesn’t have one, now’s the perfect time to invest in something he’ll wear for the rest of his life! The best part? It’s a lot less expensive than you might think! While custom suits can cost thousands of dollars, some of the most well-known brands have off-the-rack suits in their stores for a fraction of the price. Solid shades of gray or navy are a strong compliment to most women’s outfits, whereas pinstripes or plaid patterns tend to distract the eye.
IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS Long pants and closed-toed shoes are the most sophisticated and masculine looks for men. They draw attention away from his legs and feet and place it where you want it: on the face you fell in love with. So, for your session, it’s best to leave the shorts, sandals and jeans at home, too. Suit pants, dress pants or colored pants work best, especially when paired with closed-toe shoes. Brown leather dress shoes compliment almost every look, whether he’s wearing a full suit or a blazer and colored pants.
23
suit. If you bring two suits to the session, you can start with a traditional necktie and belt, then switch to suspenders and a bow tie for your second look. If two suits are too stressful, no problem! One look will do the trick! You can still mix and match accessories to compliment both of her dresses without doing a full change during the session. So, either way, you win.
MIX IT UP Many of our grooms love to mix a suit coat, blazer or sport coat with a different pant color. It adds some extra visual interest, and can be more fun than wearing two full suits in a row. We’re big fans of this fresh take on a timeless classic.
LAYERED LOOKS Next time you walk by a store like J. Crew, you’ll notice the male mannequins and models are always wearing several layers at once. Layers on men look great on camera, so even when it’s hot outside, trust us when we say that it’s worth an hour or two of discomfort for photos that will last you both a lifetime. Adding another layer will bring extra dimension and visual interest to your photos. Blazers, vests and coats up the level of any look. If the temperature permits, he could even consider adding a v-neck sweater with a pop of color from a long-sleeved

For example, you may be having your ceremony in a beautiful loft with lots of windows, so the best time for that would probably be earlier in the day rather than right before sunset! Or the venue may be surrounded by tall trees, so the sun will set faster. You might also have a very large wedding party which will require more time. TIPS • Delegation is a key part of a stress-free wedding day. If certain items haven’t been checked off of the to-do list, it’s time to hand them over to someone else. • If your gown is on a plastic hanger, try to make a note to bring a wooden hanger along for picture sake. If you forget, no big deal! We’re pros at finding wooden hangers at venues! • A few other things to consider—as you get ready to put on your dress, refrain from putting any jewelry on. We love shooting all of those final steps when you’re in your gown!
TIPS Do you want to share a first look with your dad or any other man that plays a huge role in your life? Will you and your groom be exchanging gifts during this time? If so, who would you like to deliver them? Are there certain women in your life that would appreciate seeing you get into your gown?

CHANGING INTO YOUR DRESS Next we’ll have your girls change into their dresses. Anyone that you want to be present while you put on your dress should also be completely ready at this time (mom, grandma, etc.) Again, make sure to schedule your makeup and hair with plenty of time to spare! Once all the ladies are ready, you’ll slip into your dress (we won’t start photographing until you’re covered unless you request otherwise. Troy will also step out at this point.) Make sure to use the restroom before you put on your dress! We’ll first get photos of your dress getting laced/buttoned/ zipped up by your mom or maid of honor. Then we’ll have all of your bridesmaids gather around you, fluffing your dress and loving on you. It makes for great photos! We’ll then direct you while you put on your jewelry, garter, veil and perfume and give you a few minutes to take in the fact that you’re GETTING MARRIED!
At some point in the day, if your groom is getting ready in the same location as you, we’ll go hang out with the guys for a little while. Your groom should have his pants and shirt on when we arrive and the groomsmen should be completely dressed. We’ll photograph some of your groom’s details first (socks, shoes, cuff links, belt, watch, tie, etc.) and then direct him while he puts on his jacket, tie and the rest of his details. It’s always nice if his mom, dad or both are there to help him with his boutonnière, jacket and tie. Once he’s ready we’ll take a few shots of him outside and then of him and his groomsmen if you’ve not decided on a first look.

PORTRAITS Then we’ll find a spot with some beautiful light and go right into your bridal portraits! If you’ve decided on a first look we’ll bring your groom out for your special moment together as soon as we’re done. First looks will put you in the perfect state of mind for your bride and groom portraits. We’ll then take bridal party photos before the ceremony. If you decide to not do a first look, after your bridals we’ll take photos of you and your bridesmaids.

the details
The whole day begins with the DETAILS! This is one of our favorite parts of the wedding day because it allows us to prepare and get our creative side warmed up for the rest of the day! We photograph a bride’s details in a way that matches and accentuates the style of the entire wedding day. So in some ways, the details set the stage for the look of the whole wedding and we love having ample time to stylize and shoot everything from the dress to the jewelry to grandma’s handkerchief! To the right, you’ll find a list of the common details that we shoot. We ask brides to gather any details they have before we arrive so that we can walk in, say hello, give you a huge hug and then begin with all the goodies! (Please ensure your mom that we will take GREAT care of the dress, we promise!)
35
the wedding experience
We usually spend about an hour photographing the details and it’s incredibly helpful (we really can’t stress enough) if they’re all in one place! One of the biggest obstacles we’ve run into during details is missing rings – either the bride’s wedding band or groom’s band or both! Make sure you have all three rings together that morning (don’t give them to the best man the night before!!) Once they’re photographed we promise to give them right back (or make sure that they get to the best man)! It’s really helpful if everything is together either on a tray or in a box – that way moving to a different location is much easier! (While we’re talking about trays – if you have a pretty one, bring it! They’ll be amazing to photograph details on!) We also

TIPS Depending on the theme and “look” of the wedding day, there may be some extra elements that you could include when you gather your details. For example, if you’re having a country themed wedding, you could include a piece of burlap or lace for us to use when we’re shooting your rings and jewelry. This REALLY makes for beautiful, consistent album spreads! the wedding experience

When you’re planning a wedding day timeline the best advice we could give is to add cushion time! Sometimes the most simple things can take an extra 20 minutes and then all of a sudden the whole morning it thrown off. We’ve seen getting the bride in her dress take almost 40 minutes because of a button malfunction. It’s a smart idea to add in an extra 10 minutes here and there so that we have some wiggle room to work with! This way if one part of the day gets thrown off 20 minutes, we can help you compensate that time in other areas. There are so many different things to think about when you’re planning a wedding, so here are a few tips for the pre-ceremony timeline! We realize that every single wedding day is different and so not all of these tips will apply to every wedding day schedule. Something else to consider is that not everything will go as planned and we promise you that is completely normal!

veil OPTIONS Since 95 percent of our couples opt for a first look, we have options for your bridal veil! We recommend that the bride only wear the veil when she comes down the aisle and we recommend this for three different reasons. This is something new for your groom to see when you’re walking down the aisle! A lot of times, during the first look the groom is so excited to see his bride that he accidentally pulls the veil out when he throws his arms around her! Saving the veil for the ceremony ensures that we will get some “just married” portraits because every bride needs to have a “veil blowing in the wind” shot of their own! Of course this isn’t a rule that we ask all our brides to follow, it’s simply a suggestion that we make after having photographed so many weddings.

bridal BOUQUET There are so many expenses when it comes to wedding planning. Many brides have to prioritize what they want to invest in. We just want to give a little tip that can save you money and make a large impact on the way your images turn out. If you’re having trouble making a decision about your florals, here is what we suggest. We recommend making your bridal bouquet a big priority! When we’re photographing a wedding, if the bride has a gorgeous bouquet we can make the entire day look like there were beautiful florals everywhere! We can use the bridal bouquet to spruce up the bridal details, reception details AND even bride and groom portraits as well! The bridal bouquet is a focal point for us when it comes to your photography and so we highly recommend getting your DREAM bouquet and investing less on the bridesmaids bouquets since they will not be photographed nearly as much.

trusting
PORTRAIT LOCATIONS One of our favorite parts of the job is taking something ordinary and making it look absolutely amazing! This happens most often when it comes to picking portrait locations! If there is one thing that we love and appreciate about our couples, it’s that they trust us. Sometimes we select portrait locations that most people wouldn’t consider attractive. For example, the image on this spread was taken on the top of an unassuming parking garage! We started portraits a bit later than expected and we knew the lighting was just going to be fantastic on the rooftop. There was nothing special about this place. It was grungy and seemingly “ugly” from everyone else’s point of view except ours. However, because our couple trusted us and they were willing to try it out, they now have the most amazing portraits! So our encouragement is to just trust!

YOUR FIRST LOOK
WHY IT’S WORTH IT Your first look is an amazing part of your wedding day! Adding a first look would be a romantic addition to your wedding day celebration that not only adds to the experience but also reduces stress. Please know that we would never want any of our couples to feel pressured by this option. We want to make sure that we share all of the benefits of a first look because there is a reason 95 percent of our couples do it and love it!

BRIDE & GROOM PORTRAITS The time that we get to spend with the two of you is our most favorite part of the day! If we’re being honest, all of the wedding day portraits are important but the real favorites are almost always from our time with the bride and groom! These portraits of just the two of you will be the images that you frame beside your bed, over your mantle and they will also be the images that fill your album for generations to enjoy. This is such a sweet portion of the day – for this brief moment in time, you will be alone on your wedding day. You will have a chance to love on each other and really connect before the craziness begins!

day that the two of you will be alone. Because we respect that time so much and know from experience how valuable that time is, we recommend and politely request that the only people present during this time are the two of you. We’ll try to choose one location that has beautiful natural light and lots of different features within the same area which will help us maximize our time together and will give you gorgeous images! If possible, we like to choose a different location for the bride and groom photos than the one chosen for bridal party photos and family formals. However, beautiful light always trumps the background (and our style is to usually separate you from the background by having the background fall out of focus anyway). This is especially true if your timeline requires photos to occur mid-day. When the sun is high in the sky we’ll need to find an area that is largely shaded and free from hot spots (bright

TIMING Bride and groom portraits are normally done before the ceremony (after the first look) and then we love shooting a few “just married” portraits after the ceremony if the timeline allows! This is when the light is low and golden! It’s such a romantic time for the bride and groom portraits. If you’re not interested in the first look, we will make sure to include as much time as we can after the ceremony for these portraits! If you choose not to have a first look we’ll need to have more time scheduled after the ceremony. If you’re portrait time doesn’t naturally fall during golden hour (sunset can be after 8:00 in the summer) we like to sneak you out of the reception for just 10 -15 minutes once the light is beautiful! Golden hour photos will end up being some of your favorites!
TIPS • Feel free to gaze at each other, don’t be afraid to show emotion and soak in every moment! • If you have a long veil, definitely bring it – for at least some of your portraits! Veils are so romantic! • Don’t forget your bouquet!
bridal party Let’s chat about your bridal party! This is when the fun REALLY begins! We know from experience that all brides want their closest friends to have an amazing time during their big day and we will make sure that happens! Bridal party portraits should be a ton of fun!

We’ll also take individual photos – each bridesmaid with you and then each groomsmen with your groom.
WHAT TO EXPECT There will most likely be group photos where we ask you to look at each other and interact/laugh. You might not be physically looking at someone, but just look to the right or the left! We also recommend not talking during these types of photos but instead start laughing! Often times when we talk the photos may not be super flattering but a fake laugh usually ends up in genuine laughter and adorable smiles! And that translates to great photos!
• When it comes time to selecting bridal party attire, our biggest piece of advice would be to shop around. Bridal boutiques will always have options but recently we have seen bridesmaids wear amazing dresses from everyday stores such as Macy’s, Anthropology, LOFT, J Crew, Mod Cloth, Nordstrom and Banana Republic! Also, if you come across a sale, it’s actually more economical for the guys to buy suits rather than spend $175 to rent one for a day!

• B&G with Bride’s Siblings
TIMING Family photos add up quickly because we need to set aside about 3 minutes per group and the more time we spend on family photos the less time you’ll have for portraits of the two of you! We politely ask that you limit your family photo time to your immediate family, grandparents and any other extremely important people and save the rest of your group photos for the reception. The reception is a great time for those photos of your coworkers, cousins, sorority sisters and high school friends!

week before your wedding. Having to wait or search for family members is the number one reason for delay, so it’s good to let everyone know that they’ll be needed ahead of time! A great tip is to appoint someone from each of your families to assist us in making sure everyone is present for your family photos. And feel free to remind them at rehearsal!
• Make sure that your family members aren’t stepping on your dress or three feet away from you: lightly pick up your dress, let them put their feet under your dress and then drop your dress. Just make sure to do this with every new group!

TIPS • Make sure to have a towel with you to blot the bottoms of you and your bridesmaids’ bouquets – that way you don’t end up with water marks on your dresses! • Be sure to discuss the photography rules with your venue! Every venue is different. Some restrict use of external lights/flash photography (which we try to avoid anyway if at all possible during the ceremony) and some may restrict where we can stand to photograph you!
CEREMONY Here it is! The moment everyone has been waiting for! The bride is about to walk down the aisle to the love of her life and if she’s like most girls, she’s dreamed about this moment for a long time! Vows will be shared and promises will be made. This is what it’s all about! In a world full of wedding blogs, Pinterest and bridal magazines, it’s easy to be overwhelmed and consumed by the “prettiness” of the event. While details do matter and planning is necessary, it’s important to never lose sight of the real purpose of this amazing day!
PRE-CEREMONY Once all of your portraits are done, you’ll be whisked away and be put into hiding before the guest start to arrive! You’ll be able to touch up your hair and makeup if needed and enjoy the last few minutes before the ceremony with your girls This also gives us time to photograph your ceremony details (and possibly reception details if everything is at the same location) and set up so we’re ready when you walk down the aisle!
WALKING DOWN THE AISLE The moment is here! You’re about to marry the love of your life! Ashley will be down at the front across from the groom and Troy will remain back with you to capture last minute excitement! When you and your bridesmaids are coming down the aisle, stand up straight, keep your shoulders back, chin down and look straight ahead. And don’t forget to smile! Hold your bouquet down towards your belly button and tilt them forward slightly – that way we’ll be able to see your gorgeous dress
When you start walking down the aisle, lock eyes with your groom and let everything else melt away. Those few moments are so precious! When you first start down the aisle, Ashley will be locked on the groom to capture his reaction and then she’ll come back to you and follow you through your dad giving you away. Once you get up to the aisle, don’t forget to hand your bouquet off to your Maid of Honor and be sure to get it back for the recessional!
FIRST KISS You might want to ask your officiant to step back and to the side during your first kiss so that only you two are in the frame. And don’t be afraid to smooch! Kisses that last longer than a peck allow us to get a few different photos. During the recessional make sure you and your groom stop halfway down the aisle to kiss! It makes an incredible photo as your guests will be standing, clapping and possibly throwing petals or confetti! We’ll follow you out to capture your first few minutes alone as husband and wife.

RECEPTION PLANNING The party is here! Receptions can be a blast! However, it’s important to make sure that you have your event well thought out. This is the job of your coordinator and your DJ/Band. Your caterer will also play a big role in the design and set up of your event. Every aspect of your reception affects the overall outline of the evening. For example, if you’re not having a plated meal, your reception will need to be set up in a way that allows movement. Guests will need to be able to find the food stations easily and there will be a mixture of dinner tables and high top cocktail tables. This will encourage guests to mix and mingle. If you are having a plated dinner, you will more than likely need escort cards, full place settings and a space for all your guests to be seated comfortably. Whatever the style of your event, make sure that you plan out all of the events of the evening. Your coordinator and DJ can help you set up the evening so that guests won’t leave early or experience long periods of waiting for the next thing to happen.
Much like the ceremony, you have the freedom to make your reception your own! It’s your party, it should be exactly how you want it to be! Here is a list of some key events that happen often at receptions:

Photographs are meant to be shared. Every day a photograph grows in significance and value because every day after it is taken we are one day further from the moment and the emotion that is captured in the image. Your wedding photographs should be enjoyed by you, your friends, family and future generations! We want you to have ALL your memories in your possession forever and ever! We also want you to share your images freely and without hesitation. This is why we deliver your images via an online gallery! This means that you don’t have to wait on a package in the mail and you’ll have access to them wherever you are! We’ve listed some important information that will help you understand your online gallery and all that it can do on the next page. Enjoy!

DOWNLOADING PHOTOS You’ll be able to download your edited images directly from your online gallery and they will be high resolution. This process is very simple! All you have to do is click the downwards arrow icon and you will be prompted to enter your name and email. Once you enter your name and email, you will be asked if you want to download just one photo or if you would like to download all photos! Your photos will download directly to your “downloads” folder. If you opt to download the entire gallery, you will be notified via email when your entire download is ready. It takes a few minutes to prepare hundreds of images to be downloaded!
ACCESSING YOUR PHOTOS ON YOUR PHONE The online gallery system that we use actually has a mobile app that is free to download! If you pull up the gallery in your browser on your phone, you will be prompted to download a free app. In this free app, you’ll be able to access your gallery (both wedding and engagement galleries) and you can download images to your phone for clear, crisp instagram photos!
ORDERING PRINTS You can actually order professional and affordable prints from within your online gallery and have them shipped directly to your house. Print sizes are all under $10 and are printed in a professional lab to ensure color and contrast accuracy. You are more than welcome to print images on your own. However, we would warn you to avoid places like Walmart, Target and Costco. We cannot promise that your colors will print true-to-life if you choose to print at those stores. If you don’t print through your gallery, we recommend using Mpix.com!
GALLERY EXPIRATION We have great news! Your galleries will not expire for 10 years! Isn’t’ that amazing!? You will have kids running around everywhere before your wedding gallery expires! However, even though you will have access to your images for a long time, we would still recommend downloading them and saving them to multiple places for safekeeping.
SHARING, WATERMARKING AND EDITING You have the freedom to share your images in any way that you choose. These are your images and we want you to love them so much that you can’t help but share them! We don’t believe that it is necessary to watermark our images. All we ask is some type of credit whenever you use an image on social media. We only have ONE rule when it comes to what you can and cannot do with our work. We always encourage our clients not to re-edit their images. Let us do that hard work! If you have an image or two that you want to print at a very large size and you find an imperfection, we will gladly perfect it!
