A DREAM OF DEATH
2018.4.1----2018.5.10 Academic work----Cemetery design Site: Qingdao,China Instructor: Chenglai li TEL: 86 532 85071277 Email: 1021089714@qq.com Individual work
The concept is derived from analyzing the height difference of its site, offering different spatial conditions for various activities such as mourning and preying. In China, most cemeteries are built far from city , people believe that it is unlucky to walk pass grave monuments. But this cemetery can be seen as a part of landscape of coastline.
5
A DREAM OF DEATH by W.B Yeats I dreamed that one had died in a strange place Near no accustomed hand: And they had nailed the boards above her face , The peasants of that land, And, wondering, planted by solitude A cypress and a yew : I came, and wrote upon a cross of wood, Man had no more to do: Sbe was more beautiful than thy first love, This lady by thy trees: And gazed upon the mournful stars above, And heard the mournful breeze. 6

RETHINKING DEATH The concept comes from a painting of Kazimir Malevich. He laid down the foundations of Suprematism and Supremacy which painting completely abandons the semantic and descriptive elements of painting. Simple and free squares represent the birth and end of life, those elements are translated and used in my project. The design intension of my project is to materialize the language of Malevich's paingting to translate the simple and pure forms into physical spaces which allows people to touch and feel and get inspired. As they sit and walk through the architecture, they are able to rethink the meaning of death.

The site is located in suburb of city which is surrounded by light factories.People living here are not able to visit exhibitions because of the underdeveloped infrastructure. In this project, we combined different functional spaces, such as markets and art galleryďźŒto offer the residents a cultural life while shopping in the market , and they do not have to pay for tickets which are overwhelming for them.On the other hand , artworks should not only be displayed in glass boxes. In the market, they become more approachable and have more interactions with visitiors.

SITE ANALYSIS
New auto factories have been built nearby the site in the last few years, and it also creates a large number of job opportunities for the workers. However, those employees have no places to relax after work, the government does not have enough financial support to build more museums or public libraries. And the situation is prevalling in suburb areas of China. The project aims to create multi-funtional spaces for the residents and workers

FUNCTION PARTITION
As the residential areas next to the site are high-density, the design does not pile up blocks to make high-rise buildings but leaves more empty spaces to build basketball courts and gardens. Furthermore, the project has considered needs of different age stages, including young children and elders, to make the market to serve more residents.
