"AREA A, B AND C?" Prisoned Palestine - Under a comprehensive network of surveillance and control

Manifesto of Justice Truth Telling and Reconciliation Centre | East Jerusalem, West Bank | August - November 2019 | Independent Thesis | Supervised by Marijke Davey

Civil rights and rights of minority have been prominent on the global political agenda during the second half of the last century. In this respect, the declared intention by Israel to treat Arabs equally has mostly been overshadowed due to the long-lasting Arab-Israeli conflict, political tension and existential fear. Under this condition, it is very questionable whether the Israeli Justice System implements justice equally, irrespective of different social groupings. Differential treatment in the justice system may directly result from laws, enforcers or judicial system. This thesis project aims to investigate the role of architecture in the justice system. Through research, it is found that this brief required a direction that breaks from some of the stereotypes associated with international criminal court or monumental architecture. In the context of crime and national conflict, trial architecture has tended to reflect the power and authority of the historical event it represents. In this sense, the architecture’s legacy is monumental, severe, sombre, and firmly oriented to the past. I am keen to create a forward-looking institution that deviates from the distress-invoking, harshness of most existing trial and monumental models. This is not to criticize or denigrate such models but, instead, to emphasize that in light of a Palestinians’ and Israelis’ rich cultural and historical traditions, we must move in a different and more positively-oriented direction. Therefore, my design intention is to create a non-challenging and less hierarchical space for both sides, architecture is only as a background of the event. The truth telling and reconciliation centre will combine a strong educational and outreach program together with its ongoing work for restorative justice as well as the commemorative nature of two galleries. The project design is organized as a central court that are connected to East and West Jerusalem with two galleries, in between them is a media centre working both as a public library and archive of national and regional policies and discourse. At the back, there is a research centre and offices for the reconciliation committee. The design connects these functions at various levels with a spatial quality of continuity, allowing different users to interact and collaborate, enhancing their understanding and experience. Yet each function is also able to operate independently when required. I try to use structures that look light and humble to define an intricate spatial composition of connecting volumes; generating a series of exterior and interior spaces that flow into each other to allow the freedom of movement for users for contemplation, education, engagement and discussion. The central court encourages debating and talking, with a highlight of bringing back the spectating to it. 3

Sectional Perspective

Levitated Melbourne High-rise complex | Melbourne, Australia | August - October 2018 | Studio C | Supervised by Fiona Louise McLean

When having a discussion collectively on what we thought future city was about, we need to see there is a global transition from the old big-box environments to a much more network environment. The outcome of that means the city becomes denser, we are seeing that within Melbourne. The triangular site is one of the urban blocks with highest density in Melbourne. In the past ten years of excessive growth within Melbourne CBD and its fringes, there are challenges and personalities, places to live and spend time, creating communities were an issue. These issues are even more urgent for the triangle, since the site becomes a place where people wanna quickly escape with almost no welcoming public spaces and active street frontages. Another feature is there are many weird gaps and void spaces in between buildings mostly due to the shift of urban grid systems and inappropriate design. These void spaces in between are too narrow as an appropriate distance between tall buildings and wide enough for a laneway space. It inspires me to think about what could I do in the in-between, is there a chance to improve the states quo with the negative space on site? That was a starting conversation and was the backbone I then develop. To build in between, the design uses lightweight steel grid to fill in the negative space on the site and create built massing form that was permeable. It is decided to create a lot of buildings rather than one mass in order to create better environments, better views, more permeability and particularly the spaces in between became a destination, almost like a village of buildings. In this way, it is possible to create a vision of more vertical place-making rather than reflective glass towers in the sky. The design above and in between the buildings on site with the superstructures faces the challenges and is a new approach to achieve connections between urban fabric, creating communities, the idea of a city in a building in a city and also creating a fully integrated environment. Eventually, it aims to create a better quality of life in the future, a better triangular urban block, and broadly a better city.

A WALL OF REVEALING AND CONTRAST

Home of Intimacy

Housing Design with clients | Collingwood, Melbourne | February 2019 | Studio D | Supervised by Marijke Davey When interviewing Jess and Cam on site, they conveyed that they preferred a more compacted home, less doors and walls, single floor and easy access to each other everywhere inside the house. They have one very important family member, a spoiled dog, staying and sleeping with them all the time. Therefore, this design aims to explore how intimate the spaces could be and how different functions infiltrate into each other. Once entering the house, a wall of revealing is standing in front to create a contrast of light and view. Walking along the corridor, a large open courtyard will suddenly appear, with all the other functions organizing around it. In between the living, dining, kitchen, bedroom, guitar room and the gallery, joineries with well-considered scenarios are created instead of walls and doors. The design intends to allow their intimacy to develop among spaces with great sense of playfulness and humour.

Hope and Rebuild

Research on Crime against Culture | Aleppo, Syria | January - February 2019 | Studio D | Supervised by Marijke Davey This research investigates war and crime against people and culture, using markets in the old city of Aleppo as examples. It documents the process of the war from the domestic scale to urban scale, what people have lost in a war-torn country, their insistence and courage of living, their hope and actions of rebuilding their city.
