01 RE-INCARNATING BELGRADE: TREE OF LIFE Narrating Life and Death at Belgrade Fortress In search of personal and national identity, can architecture helps the people see themselves in the new nation? The multiple layers of memory in the interplay with urban emotional symbolism have a significant role in shaping city identity and its future. Ultimately, architects have a power that politician lack. The idea is to uncover and link lost historical narratives developed through the clues/ findings of myth versus reality particularly through the story of Orpheus who descended to the underworld from the Roman Well (Belgrade Fortress) to retrieve his lover, Eurydice. The aim of this study is to explore or create a new beginning of Belgrade scattered in time and in space. Conveyed through the narrative of a fictional journey from the Myth of Orpheus (love, life and death), the project designs a wedding and funeral procession using the notion of : i. Tree of Life (Roman Well at Belgrade Fortress) ii. Sun path in relation to Spiritual Horizon Oxford Brookes University RIBA Part II Year 2 Project Tutors: Nicholas Boyarsky Jason Coleman Louise Cann

RE-DISCOVERING IDENTITY: A SURREAL JOURNEY Today, Belgrade still remain as a surreal existence among the Europe countries. All too often, the city – desired by many invaders during the 20 past centuries for its strategic importance, lying at the border between Orient and Occident – has been 40 times conquered, destroyed and rebuilt. As a result, different architectural layers mingle with modern movements and the search for identity. There comes a time when the spiritual horizon slowly closes when moral principles are lost because moral does not exist without the community. Turning away from the horrors of the Yugoslav wars and the realities of contemporary politics, these new turbo-sculptures are seen as mere means of promoting tourism or international investment rather than memory. They do not deal with relevant events or figures from Serbia’s more recent history. Belgrade Fortress seems as the most important heritage that kept the local community together yet unable to ankhor their identity as Serbian. Therefore, the project started discovering a local routes to the Belgrade Fortress and introduced a spiritual journey.

02 INSTALLATION: BELGRADE AT WAR The Cycle of the City Destruction - Recovery - Rebirth The concept of the Phoenix is used to resemble the idea of a cyclical process that sees ‘Destruction’, ‘Recovery’ and ‘Rebirth’ as the main stages of regeneration, and ultimately simulating the way in which Belgrade has existed throughout time. The project developed through an exploration of materials that could illustrate these three stages and the installation’s final structure is divided into layers that capture the essence and the traces of each phase. The 20th century was chosen to be the focus for the installation, and the video sequence is split into three different periods of this time: 1) Between WW1 and WW2; 2) During the Socialist Era; 3) The late 20th century Belgrade. The installation is based on devastating events that have negatively affected the society during these periods, but also on the way people have worked to repair the damage in order to continue to grow.

03 CREATIVE HOUSE: A CREATIVE HUB FOR THE PEOPLE Providing opportunities through creative clustering The project aim to provide a sustainable regeneration and the key players involved in the process. By understanding the needs of the local community and working with key stakeholders, a careful design strategies should have applied to address social deprivation through regeneration. There is emerging evidence that the places where people live are an important factor in determining and sustaining inequalities in health outcomes between individuals. Many studies have suggested a higher level of deprivation is consistently related to poorer health outcomes (Marie, A, Baker A and Fellows, C 2017). With social deprivation identified as the main issue in Norwich, we aim to improve individual and community health and wellbeing through mixed housing development and art-driven programme, providing opportunities for different communities. The project scheme focuses on enhancing and reconnecting the existing square and community, while preserving the square’s original identity.

The challenge for Norwich is to ensure that workforce are equipped with the skills to participate in the knowledge economy. Our research shows a need for office spaces: ’Norwich is in danger of losing business investment because of a shortage of good quality commercial premises and in danger of driving away businesses,’ say property agents (Culot, C., 2018 and Tech Nation, 2018).

Why Ceramic Tiles ? The Brutalist Architecture

RESTORING THE “CERAMIC” RED TILES Arranged along the western edge of Anglia Square, Sovereign House had to address both the ground level of Botolph Street “outside” and the upper vehicle level “inside” the complex. Today the longer of two asymmetrical wings faces Botolph Street with boarded windows and a frothing sea of graffiti against bare in-situ concrete. When occupied, however, a strip of windows addressed the street, and the concrete was faced in red tiles. (Brown, J., 2013) Sovereign House under Construction in 1968 (McPherson, S., 2012)

04 EVOLO INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION The Hives Hong Kong The project site is located in Hong Kong, which has the highest number of skyscrapers in the world .The urban area of Hong Kong has the highest population and employment density in the world. Measured at block level, some areas may have population densities of more than 400,000 people per square kilometre. As of 2011, there are seven million people for its 1,068 square kilometres (412 square miles) of land. The high price of land in Hong Kong also contributes to its high-density development. Those on low and middle incomes, and even some on high incomes, can only afford to live in high-rise buildings. Scattered around the island are micro apartments filled with socalled “coffin homes” — rooms of 400 square feet subdivided into 20 or so units, which many inhabitants refer to as “cages.” Some are actual wire boxes. There are an estimated 200,000 people in Hong Kong living in a tiny subdivided units, some so small that a person cannot even fully stretch out their legs. The spaces are just big enough for one person of a medium-build to lie down. If they need to use the bathroom or cook dinner, they must share a communal space with at least a dozen other people. Families are routinely separated due to the lack of space. Smells are putrid, and there are often bed bug infestations, the South China Morning Post reports. I n order to solve the issue of low living quality , we proposed to create another space which is literally “joint” with the existing structure, like a Hive. The programme such as library, garden in the sky, clinic, and etc are proposed according the condition of the “Hive “area.
