Design of a summer youth camp promoting by a chosen political party and its ideologies inspired by the rise of the different parties that emerged in post-revolution Egypt. Having chosen the Liberal Egyptian party, the main statement of the camp is the focus on human rights and breaking the restrictions set by the previous regime through means of self-discovery and self-expression through different art forms. The concept is inspired by the expressionist movement, to reflect the camp’s statement of pushing boundaries. This expressionism is delivered through transparency and play of levels to reflect liberal politics. However, the defining component of the concept is the curving graffiti wall that winds through the camp, for students to freely release their inner artists.

Design of a multifunction study and socialization pavilion in a court within the School of Sciences and Engineering building in the AUC campus. Criteria for the design included response to user needs and behavior patterns, environmental sustainability, and constructability.

13

14

The design of the pavilion features a partially sunken area to maximize usable area and create a closed lounge suitable for work and study while the stepped roof of the lounge acts as an outdoor seating to allow for social interaction, inspired by the use of steps across the AUC campus social gathering spots.

As the steps curve towards the peak, the wooden risers are replaced by operable glass windows to allow for natural lighting and ventilation of the indoor lounge.

Left: Study of user behavior pattens and needs to be addressed by the pavilion. Below: Photo of the site.

Design of a pavilion representing Saudi Arabia in the World Expo. The journey through the pavilion acts a timeline of the country, translating its slow and gradual development in social norms, culture and art through the path in terms of both form and structure.

Beginning the design of a pavilion representing Saudi Arabia in the World Expo through story models (above) and conceptual models (below), translating the journey of development within the country through form and structure [Dec 2013].

29

The next stage in the design process involved designing in section (above), followed by creating the plans (above), with structural details shown. Final digital model created using Rhinosceros showing the spiralling journey gradually opening up from a solid shear wall structure to a cantilevered Vierendeel frame structure.

Project 1: Proposals of a redesign of the facade of a delapitated building in Downtown Cairo. Contextually blending, contrasting, and intermediate alternatives were proposed, with the intermediate alternative ultimately being chosen as the optimal solution.

37

The first alternative is inspired by the French and British colonialist architecture predominant in Downtown Cairo, aiming to blend with the historical context of the area, and simultaneously revive it. While it respects the historical context, this alternative does not respond to nor represent the current users of the building and surrounding street. Furthermore, it does not reflect the current time and therefore is not seen as the appropriate choice of facade redesign.

38 The second alternative aims to contrast with the original context to create a unique landmark for the street.

While it is inspired by the original haphazard, undulating heights of the original building and street as a whole, the new facade proposes a tower with a bizarre steel and glass design featuring a much higher void to solid ratio than the original building.

While this maximizes the natural northern light entering the building, it does not take into consideration the needs of the users in terms of privacy, reflected in the mostly solid original facade.

Furthermore, the contrasting facade may be seen as imposing on the historical context of Downtown Cairo and non-representative of the social and cultural context of today.

The third alternative, presented on the next page, proposes an intermediate solution that is inspired by a combination of the original context, the blending alternative, and the contrasting alternative. It aims to maximize the use of natural northern light, while the screen is used to maintain privacy for the users.
