Masters in Architecture CEPT | MAAD Monsoon 2020 By placing an Urban Marketplace in the middle of the high density and populated zone in Rohini, Delhi, this project aims to increase the intensity and diversity of human interactions in the city through sports as a catalyst. All the sports arenas are proposed within the context of commercial hub, the aim is to provide safety to these areas within a healthy social interactive environment in conjunction with a market, and rentable office spaces and green outdoor open spaces. The focus is really on designing the circulation, open spaces, plazas and streets acting cohesively and letting the users meander through the space and pausing at specific areas placed strategically.

Revitalising The Urban Core Sports as a Catalyst bringing people together - Case of Rohini, Delhi
4
Reading, Questioning, Interpreting an Architectural Response Problematising the Context : Problem Statement : A good public space is one that reflects diversity and encourages people to live together effortlessly, creating the necessary conditions for permanence, which invites people to be on the street. It is the vivacity of spaces that attracts people. It is the ultimate paradox that on one hand architecture contains elements which can make a space chaotic and equally a vibrant one. Throughout the environment there are pockets of spaces that deter the opportunity of social interaction, these
spaces are the dead spaces which gradually evolves. As we meander through the streets of Rohini in Delhi, we encounter dead streets hardly used by any pedestrian. People prefer walking on the road rather than the sidewalk. There is a presence of huge lifeless periphery wall on one side and dense canopy on top of it which makes the sidewalk a semi-closed space with a dark and dingy experience discouraging people to use it. This
boundary wall adds to the disconnect between the internal gated community to the outside streets. Another daunting issue is of the clustering of marketplace which is the only public centred space where all the interaction and activities happen. Accumulation of all the activities at one centre makes this place more chaotic and are faced by challenges like noise pollution and lack of parking spots with the everlasting issue of safety. The prime concern which arises in this area is firstly, How can architecture intervene to convert the chaotic spaces into vibrant one and the dead streets to a more lively street? And secondly, How can we solve the existing issue of lack of open spaces and bring people together in a safe environment? MAPPING THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE USING A SPACE (This shows the destination of any function/activity happening)

office spaces and green outdoor open spaces. The focus is really on designing the circulation, open spaces and streets rather than the individual shops, some of the multifunctional area is designed for the tenants to customise and transform as they want. The social incubator is defined architecturally, not by façades that communicate an appearance,
but rather by the spaces forcing the meandering of the users and pausing at strategic location. This floor also becomes the site for social interaction, and different usages of shops and sports facilities and de-central zoning becomes a social hub for the same. Socialisation is seen as central to the exchange of ideas and making contact with new people.

Space material and Interaction
Conceptual Diagram This modelling exercise was to create an enclosure system with the use of different kind of materials to express the characteristics of a system in relation to the space of the project. The contrast between light and material and in its texture what is the prime objectives. And factors like the ability of the material to draw in or restrict light was taken into consideration.
Design strategy:The concept of this design is to give sports and physical activities the prime importance, for which all the major sports arenas and courts are lined up on one side and retail shops.
Shops
This provides pedestrian movement across the side giving them views of both. These sports arenas have been strategically placed so as to provide pause points at regular intervals. Further these sports interaction have been lined up till third floor with open terraces and all the commercial offices are placed above them.
Process of Articulation of Form and Spaces
This was the first time where a model was made to communicate the design strategy of the project and its tentative expression. The outcome of this was to create an expression of space as an interaction of its physical elements. The visual exposure and the opaqueness had to be taken into consideration.
Iteration-1
The ground floor has been kept fully opened without any link between in and out which is an architectural move to increase interaction amongst people. Further articulation in the form has been done on the above upper floors so as to provide informal outdoor office gathering space. And a rooftop restaurant is placed at the top.
Sports Arenas
Yoga Area
In the design the prime importance was given to the badminton and basketball court which were the driving factor in the design. The parallel access through the market was another important feature giving linear shops and pedestrian movement. These modules were articulated on the above floors and overlooking Spaces were created. A transparent and opaque for running parallel was strategically placed keeping in mind the views.

Masters in Architecture CEPT | MAAD Spring 2021 The project aims at creating a social district at an urban level with the covalence of public realm. Integrating residential and commercial use whilst creating both public and private streets is the key focus of the project. A well-structured transition of formal dense arcade retail shopping street to a more organic open trail towards the riverfront is achieved. The project attempts to create a journey of an array of experiences at regular intervals while living in a high-density CBD of Ashram Road. Finally catering to the growing housing needs, the future of vertical living is explored keeping in mind the demographics of current scenario of Ashram Road.

The ground floor plan blurs the boundary between commercial and residential and behaves as an intermediate space. There is an coexistence of public and private rails leading you to different experiential journeys while just meandering though the retail shops. The overall site plan becomes the most happening urban space in
the city context where people are attracted with the connect and belongingness to the site which eventually opens up to the beautiful Riverfront view. The ground floor plan has all the commercial activities and the parking happening within the residential complex while all the living happens above.

Street Urbanism
Street Urbanism
The site has been proposed with three walking trails giving a different experiences from public in formal to a public formal to a private street. Major nodes have been identified and strategically designed according to the time which would be spent by the people at that particular point. The overall character gradation can be seen from a formal arcade retail shopping street to a more organic form achieved at the riveredge. In all the 3 trails, the journey comprises of different experiences at regular interval, where you come from a claustrophobic high density area to an open riverfront view. The chart shows the overall design efficiency of the scheme comprising of 3 different stakeholdersconsumer, producer and the influencer. The project works good on overall contextual responsiveness and the site efficiencies also. A good social sustainability is achieved through creation of a public realm both at site and cluster level. It works good on Economic and Environmental Sustainability as well but lacks a bit on efficiency of Dwelling Unit. Overall provision of Essential Facilities and safety have been taken care of and efficiency in terms of material, water, energy conservation are considered. 18

Masters in Architecture CEPT | MAAD Monsoon 2021 The project questions the existing physical separation of citizens from governance, in the capital complex, marked through an orchestrated movement dictated by the existing buildings and installations, and aims at ‘reconciling’ the public, governance and the proposed ensem- ble of learning through the introduction of the great park. The project thus uses ‘landscape’ as a tool to hold the fragmented functions to- gether. The Park is perceived as a space for gathering and exchange. It is an arena for civic responsibility and leisure - a primary domain of the university and public buildings in the weekdays, and over weekends it serves as a domain for all. The Park of reconciliation acts as a glue, that binds the proposed en- semble of learning and governance. It acts as a framework by which relationships of responsibility are held in place. Subtle gestures in the landscape allows for possibilities and chance encounters facilitating debates and discussions amongst the various users.

Symbolic Fortification
Disintegration of public
Public engagement
This plan illustrates the fortified position of the capitol complex with buffer zones cutting off the civilizational growth from the entire grid and separating the complex with limited entry points. Does this vision of positioning the capital complex at the foothill of Shivalik range symbolise dominance over the public ?

Hence, the addition of a park within the complex which bridges the gap and reduces the separation between the government and the public. It eliminate the disconnect existing within the landscape of the complex and imagines the great park as a glue.

Sequestered Wilderness
This zone lies at the threshold of the city and governance. The zone consists of artificial mounds which were proposed by the architect in order to cut off the complex from the city. Hence in an attempt to link the complex with the city, the threshold is envisioned as an opportunity to bridge the gap and bring people in. B
DETAIL ‘A’
Sensorial trails have been carefully curated for the visitors offering them a magnitude of experiences such as forest gazing, contemplation/ meditation, fitness plazas etc. These activities have been inserted after studying the spatial character of the rooms created by the trees.

G.F. PLAN 31
Urban Design Studio IAPNU, Nirma University 2018 The project started with development plan in Shilaj area lying in outskirts of Ahmedabad, where master plan was made with key factor being refill of Shilaj Lake from rainwater and drainage. Overall a green belt was provided acting as water downpour into the lake. In the second part, a prestigious commercial public market place was designed which aimed to engage city and its citizens with more interactive places. The market would facilitate retail shops and commercial spaces. Exploration of volume is done while creating overlooking corridors and terraces. The market place becomes the urban center with streets running along it creating an access within.
