2 INTRODUCTION

This portfolio displays a progression of undergraduate work during my time at the Pearl Academy, obtaining a professional degree in Bachelor of Arts in Interior Architecture and Design (Hons) affiliated by Nottingham Trent University. Each project created an opportunity to solve a design problem through focused typologies or issue based questions. Commencing each design with research, conceptual designs centered around human need and lasting experiences. As client needs are evolving alongside advancements in the design discipline, I hope to further my career and pursue master's of architecture in future. I want to gain knowledge of both external and internal experiences. The intersection between these disciplines is where my passion lies. I find these two sectors of design inseparable. They rely on each other by informing relations between exterior and interior experiences. I am interested in exploring the connection from the scale of a person sitting in a chair to the relation they have to the city context.

The following selected projects have been chosen to convey an array of technical skills acquired throughout my bachelor's degree and experience withing the industry. They also convey the various sectors of design in which I have worked and have knowledge upon. All works have been completed by myself unless otherwise stated.

site : Kings Mall located in : New Delhi, India project type : Final thesis project (functional and space planning) typology : recreational

PROJECT STATEMENT : Malls are mushrooming in every nook and corner of urban India. The undeniable fact is that in many regions of India malls are becoming extreme popular and their number is rapidly growing. But the real problem is emerging of many unsuccessful malls in India. Shopping malls changed retail as we know it and became iconic places to meet up and hang out. But now the golden times for shopping malls seem to be over. Shopping malls are experiencing a comeback not seen in years. The troubled times for retail real estate market in India continues with as much as 160 malls performing average to poor out of a total of around 255 operational malls across top seven markets in India (DNA,2015). Retail has become a secondary, even tertiary, traffic driver for many malls. Consumers are looking for experiences that go well beyond the traditional shopping.

Architectural Typology + Structure

PROBLEM STATEMENT : Malls today face a very uncertain future in India as their numbers are rising and they are not able to withstand the competition coming up. The disappointing performance of malls in NCR, Delhi is because of an oversupply (Business Today, 2015). Common problems of all these malls are wrong tenant-mix strategy and unavailability of fun and entertainment facilities. Other reasons for failure of these malls are lack of zoning, lack of capability in retaining the anchor stores, higher vacancy rate, etc. Due to these reasons shopping malls today are running out of business and thus become 'dead'. Dead malls are prevalent throughout the country and are left to sit and decay.

left to right : elevation of Kings Mall (selected site), interior of the site, surroundings around the site

8 YASHIKA DHAMIJA

PROBLEM SOLUTION : " Today's malls, Tomorrow's social spaces. " Malls have evolved and grown into spaces where people meet. There are “business meetings, casual friendly gatherings and even matrimonial meetings". It has become increasingly evident that malls cannot depend on shopping as the only source of revenuegeneration and footfall, and, therefore, the focus is shifting towards food and beverages (F&B) and entertainment. Existing malls can become more integrated with their surrounding communities by allowing for more social and interactive elements within, so that people’s social lives revolve around the mall.

2015 - 19

SITE PLAN AND ANALYSIS :

APPROPRIATENESS TO THE SITE : The site which is chosen is in Delhi NCR, because Delhi being one of the top seven cities in the country with emerging mall capita of 95 operational malls out of which 13 of them are doing good business others are just finding it hard to succeed..

OVERALL AREA : 3,00,000 SQ. FT.

Kings Mall is an iconic mall and a crowning glory of North Delhi. It is adjacent to star attractions like Amusement park, Swarna Jayanti (Japanese) Park, Metro station Rithala, Commercial places and thus has the advantage of being close to commercial hubs, institutional area as well as high density neighborhood.

SCOPE AND RELEVANCE : The related findings of this design project will provide a base for mall developers all around the world regarding factors to consider in making a shopping mall successful and will also help them in further designing and redesigning their shopping malls better with more recreational facilities and formats liked by the customers.

With catchment populations of Rohini, Pitampura, Shalimar Bagh, Punjabi Bagh, Ashok Vihar, Kings Mall, Rohini ushers the prospective retailers to business opportunity that is holistic in all aspectsthe location, the environment, the amenities and all the pull factors, which makes it a spectacular business center.

The strategies described are intended ti improve site functionality, stimulate community development, and create value in landscape voids left by obsolescence.

With a broad frontage, it offers a great visibility profile and convenience of approach which is essential for smoother footfall ratio. The entrance is grand and leads to an atrium which enthralls with expanse.

while the methodology is developed for application to dead mall sites, its utility is applicable to other forms of obsolete landscapes.

Despite all these favorable aspects it still fails in operational business. Kings Mall languishes for years for multiple reasons despite being a great catchment for footfall because its product was weak. But mostly it lacked the right mix of brands and that there were larger more vibrant malls nearby.

Brick and mortar stores are closing at unprecedented rates, creating vast real estate wastelands in the form of dead malls. But all that empty space offers a blank slate to reinvent obsolete dead malls. Both mall management and tenants should work together and offer the customers a complete experience which includes a good variety of products, a good number of eating outlets and attractive fun & entertainment of all age's customers.

Hence, it proves to be a great workable site for my final design project.

Pearl Academy is known as a leading global design institute in design, fashion and creative business. As this institute is regularly engaged with innovating and creating new ideas, the concept behind the design of this space revolves around creating an environment which helps stimulates minds and inspire innovation. The design follows contemporary yet simple geometric architecture with use of some inspirational typographical quotes on walls which represents creativity, Break out pocket zones in different areas around the space encourages people to work wherever they feel comfortable. The transparency showed through use of glass doors and windows depicts how the design just flows and inspiration can come from anywhere while looking at different things and also people.

TEMPLE

The intrusion of Mughal empire has brought significant historical changes in the world of art and architecture. The Khirki Mosque, commissioned by Khan-i-Jahan-Junan Telangani, he constructed several mosques of significance. Now long after his death we still remember his work and his immense contribution in the field of art and architecture for constructing the largest covered mosque in the world. The Khirki Masjid is located in the settlement of Jahanpanah, Delhi. The Khirki, named for the perforated windows, or khirkis, that decorate the upper floors, has four open courtyards that provide light and ventilation to the internal prayer spaces. Occupying an area of 87 square meters, the mosque is built on a raised platform with arched recessed openings (taikhana) that is 3 meters in height. Unlike an open courtyard (hypostyle) congregational mosque, the Khirki Masjid is square in plan, subdivided into quarters; each quarter has its own inner courtyard.

Site Plan

Although the mosque has strong historical significance and enjoys a large follower base, the access to this place is a bit tricky. The mosque can be accessed through the narrow streets of khirki village near Saket area of South Delhi. It lies close to the press Enclave Marg near CityWalk Mall in Saket. Being one among the dossier, this monument had become derelict almost chocked by houses from all sides. The 14th century quadrangular shaped mosque, an unusual fusion of Islamic and traditional Hindu architecture, was in a state of neglect and was encroached upon by anti-social elements. Henceforth the proposed plan to turn the mosque into a Cultural centre was found feasible.

SITE EDGES: North Edge Khirki DDA apartments to the north. (planned development) South Edge Press Enclave road across which lies Saket malls and District courts. East Edge Satpula Dam and a low lying area which is to be developed as a lake. West Edge Low jhuggi Jhopdi cluster, extension of village (main village area)

CONCEPT STATEMENT :

The concept for interior of cafeteria revolves around the rich legacy which still finds its way back in contemporary design. The essence of space celebrates the exuberance of passion, a place of opulent beauty tempered by an aura of contemplation and reflection that personifies the Mughal way of life. The strong use of rich and multi-layered geometric patterns exemplifies this look. Mughal architecture was all about uniform pattern of structure and character and delicate ornaments. The khirki, named for perforated windows, or khirkis, that provide light and ventilation to the internal space of the building. Similarly, in my design I have tried to incorporate the same pattern by providing screens inspired by the geometric patterns often seen in stones jails’ (meshes)-works of the Mughal era, encloses the interior such that as much air could enter and circulate inside the space. The furniture draws its inspiration from Mughal architectural designs. One can see a balance between power and passion with the use of vibrant color schemes in traditional furniture, two key characteristics of Mughal era.

CONCEPT STATEMENT :

lithe //

(english : easily bent or flexible)

the wall light

To design a light whose effect creates soothing and pleasant impression in interiors of the environment. Fluid form was chosen because roundness i.e. without sharp edges, seems to be a universal reason which pleasures the human eye. Curves are preferred because they signal lack of threat which in turn portrays an essence of calmness.

project : Lighting design workshop project type : Product design (group project) typology : Wall light recognition : Elle Decor International Design Awards, India 2018 (first-runner up in student category)

The lamp designed by using smooth lines is inspired by ZAHA HADID designs. It takes it's form with a certain softness, towards a more natural language. Fascinated by the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center, it tries to capture it's essence. The subtle irregularity of LITHE means that it's silhouette changes depending upon the viewing angle. LITHE wall light offers a wide range of options for creative planners for the emphasis of specific locations, objects or area withing buildings. LITHE wall light has a fluid form and doesn't follow the norms of geometry. There is certain softness and portrays an essence of subtle calm and soothing environment. Thus, giving the viewer a sensory experience making them comfortable and at ease at the same time. The eyes tend to follow the curvature of the lamp thereby capturing the viewers attention from all the different angles. LITHE emits diffused light which is meant to reduce glare and harsh shadows.

DESIGNER BIOGRAPHY : known for handling tangible materials and also for her imagination regarding medium of light design techniques : fragmentation and fluidity well known for her use of geometric shapes to create dynamic, fluid subtle structures

ENVIRONMENT :

The wall light, LITHE, goes along with the environment of a SPA and WELLNESS CENTERS. Lighting in spa areas plays a major role in creating impressions in the minds of client and staff. Thus, Lithe when placed in such an environment gives clients a sensory experience where they'll be looking forward to unwind and relax in a comforting atmosphere.

DESIGN PROCESS :

Conceptualizing and sketching of light design taking inspiration from the building Heydar Aliyev. Soft, shallow curves suggest comfort, safety, familiarity, relaxation which is similar to our environment portrayal. The final design consists of layer pattern which is also influenced and seen in Heydar Aliyev. Manipulation and playing the structure design of the building helped to explore more design and pattern. Taking consideration the important element of the building that is the curved surface which allows a freedom of form that simultaneously differentiate, basically double curve layering cladding, the curving “fluid envelope that winds across the entire structure.

PROCESS MODEL EXPLORATION :

The process of design making considered few aspects and characteristics: Environment for spa, waiting and lounge areas, futuristic patterns, fluid and contemporary in form and shape also in bases of material soothing to eyes. EXPLORATION The next process of exploration and finalization through some hand sketches, trying out thread painting to derive out forms., block in silhouettes, rough scribbles, digital exploration on software. Selected ideas or exploration led to the right direction of final design. MODEL MAKING Exploring materials and making process models helped to determine whether final idea was going to work or needs modification. MATERIAL USED IN MODEL MATERIAL EXPLORATION : Aluminium sheet Wire mesh Ivory sheet acrylic sheets with different thickness.

PVC

Frosted

Through these model making explorations we came to know about the proportions of product and design , its functionality, aesthetics and even material selection for final design. At last, these explorations led us to making more refined design ideas and changed our mindset from rough explorations to what exactly is needed to finalize our product.

CONCEPT STATEMENT : (french : balanced)

convertible study table into display shelf

project : Furniture design workshop project type : Product design typology : joinery furniture primary function : Bookshelf / Display unit and Study table

Yin Yang concept shows us how strongly the world is connected and balanced. Our world has no ideal things; everything has a bit of the opposite. This Yin Yang inspired design focuses on the abstract and semi-chaotic patterns of distorted Yin-Yang, then takes and applies them to real forms with fascinatingly mixed results. The design is subtle but compelling – it adds new lines, shapes and angles that soften a room and draw attention to a new design element without calling too much attention to themselves or conflicting with other geometric and aesthetic features. The design itself speaks for its balanced nature in spite of having irregular geometric shape.

Equilibre is a knock down furniture made out of MDF which has multiple uses to it and is joined solely by different types of joineries. Everyone can use more storage space – shelves for books, nooks and crannies for the odds and ends that never seem to stop accumulating. If there is a line between art and design, this multi-functional furniture design certainly leans toward creativity over function. Whether you want to put one in your own living room is a subjective question. This piece of furniture is perfect for those who love to re-arrange their fittings, the transformable furniture piece can be adapted to suit your needs. Form and function are equally important in these ingenious items. This piece of furniture is composed of two sets containing various parts needed to assemble it in a bookshelf or a study table depending on user’s needs. The two sets can either be positioned individually as: - bookshelf + study table - bookshelf + bookshelf - study table + study table Whereas, a user only wanting to purchase a single set can assemble it as either a bookshelf or a study table, single use at a time depending on their needs.
