As the University of Massachusetts plans to expand the reach of University towards the urban setting of Boston, it seeks for a new vision for old Mt. ida college campus in Newton. As a part of the following Graduate Studio project the new master plan for the university was proposed in a group of three Architecture and Landscape Architecture graduate students, following which detailed design of one particular part of the campus was proposed. This design studio was integrated with challenges like retaining some of the historical and some recently built buildings on the campus and at the same time provided fascinating opportunities like recreation of the new coherent study environment which looks beyond the need of infrastructure. The design of campus center was conceptualized around overlaping the layers of buit form with landscape. A built form of inviting nature that does more than satisfying the programatic requirements by becoming pause point for students to meet, professionals to collaborate and to provide an interactive ambience for everyone in and around the built form. The design of campus center consisted a wide variety of functions like Administration offices, Campus store, Computer labs, Exhibition Gallery, Library, Seminar rooms, & work stations which were enhanced by spatial organization composed of open spaces like multilevel terraces, semi open overlooking spaces and translucent enclosed spaces to maintain a balance between collaborative public spaces and private work environment.

Research Thesis

In-between realm: Inside and Outside Project Type Brief

: Research Thesis : Executed in partial fulfilment of the Bachelor of Architecture course at Indus University, Ahmedabad.

Year Place

: 2017 : IDEA, Indus University, Ahmedabad

This research attempts to investigate the in-between realm in the context of outside and the inside of a built form. To examine the same this research deciphers the immediate context of a built form and discuss the significance of open, semi open and enclosed spaces in and around the built form. Further it talks about the response of the built form towards the immediate landscape and surrounding built forms for the selected case studies. In order to decrypt the relation of inside and outside this research analyses various parameters that contribute in making of the context of the built form. This factors include edge conditions, open spaces, elements of open spaces, vegetation, topography, climate, scale and more. Out of these the parameters which are common between the multiple case studies are analyzed in detail. The study of all this parameters is limited to the immediate context of the built form only and doesn’t further explore the response of urban factors on these projects. The case studies chosen for the research are in various cities so that they provide a larger perspective towards the complexity of the context. As the opportunities and constrains related to the built form showcase versatility in the response of a built form to the context. Among all the parameters of the immediate context the parameters considered for primary analysis are selected such that they can fit in a common frame of analysis. Some of these parameters are the edge conditions, open spaces, vegetation, elements of the open spaces etc. Whereas objective parameters like the topography, climate, location are part of the secondary analysis as they are specific to the site. Aim: The aim behind this research is to decipher the immediate context of a built form and analyze the physical, visual and notional layers which contribute in comprehensive sense of place. Objectives: 1. Demonstrating the impact of distinct physical elements and its impacts in the immediate context. This factor looks forward to elaborate various physical elements in/around the built form and decrypt their contribution and importance in the space. 2. Analyzing activities supported by each element. -In an open space number of activities take place, this factor talks about the activities for which an physical element is responsible. E.G- Any activity that takes place in the shaded space of a tree is result of the existence of the tree. hence this factor looks upon analyzing relation of elements with various activities. 3. To figure out various perspectives in which similar elements or spaces contribute. -Distinct spaces have character of its own but they may not be perceived in same way from the different points of perspective, this part analyzes the role of space and its appeal from various point of views. 4. To analyze the amalgam of various spaces This part looks upon analyzing how multiple spaces in the in-between realm come together to form a cohesive sense of place 5. To analyze the physical and visual permeability/transparency of the built form.

Research Thesis Frame of Analysis: The above factors and readings can be summarized to create a cohesive frame of analysis which will be further applied on each of the three case studies to decipher the various dimensions of the in-between spaces, This frame of analysis is divided in three major parts which are as following, (A) Edge condition, (B) Open spaces, (C) Visual factors. To create a common ground on basis of which all the case studies can be put together in the form of comparative analysis, The analysis of the each of the parameter under the topics mentioned above is structured as following, (A) Edge condition 1.Buffer spaces, 2.Boundaries. (B) Open spaces • Volume of open spaces 1. Mass and void, 2. Enclosure, 3. Scale and proportions, 4. Function/Usability of open spaces, • Elements of open spaces 5. Role of vegetation, 6. Breaking/Enhacing scale of space, 7. Circulation. (C) Visual factors 1. Transparency/Opacity, 2. Vista.

Site Area Built Up

: 102,401 sq.ft : 28,000 sq.ft

Year Place

: 2017 : Competition entry, Archasm

The radars generally have a specific range but at the same time they exhibit the varying intensity of command over elements at various distance. The concept of radars here is a metaphor to the proposed environment of learning spaces. Instead of the idea of students learning different courses in the same classroom spaces, the spaces proposed for the project represent the nature of the course to be offered in a particular space. Each radar here is a learning space that offers a unique environment suggesting a specific course, being in proximity of which a student can learn and explore. Instead of the hierarchy of grades or standards the structure of the education and the architecture of the school is designed in a way that it exposes each student to the various potential opportunities or subjects to explore and choose few of their interest which they can explore further. Which would eventually help schools to be the temples of innovations and at the same time it will do right justice to the potential of students.

In the rural context of Ahmedabad, cremation process is still considered as a taboo for women and children. Under ordinary circumstances they are not allowed to access the cremation site as the process of cremating their loved ones is considered to be disturbing and horrifying. The concept behind the proposed design was to achieve a built environment where the spatial organization of the site allows a honorable departure of the deceased in the most subtle way and in addition invites individuals to the site for remembrance activities. The site for the proposed design is located next to a lake and hence comes up with an opportunity of amalgamation of cremation activities and recreation activities of the lake, Which turns out to be an oppotunity to tranquilize the character of crematorium.

Urban plug-in Kharicut canal, Ahmedabad Project Type Brief

: Urban Public Infrastructure : Revitalization of a contaminated canal of Ahmedabad city

Site Area Built Up

: 26,900 sq.ft : 8,600 sq.ft

Year Place

: 2016 : IDEA, Indus University

Kharicut canal- Once one of the prime water bodies of the Ahmedabad city has become a dump site for household and industrial waste. The canal served as a 20km long artery supplying water for drinking and irrigation facilities in the city. After new laying out of water supply network this canal became redundant and because of the increasing use as the dump site population of the area started moving away from the canal. The idea here is to propose an urban insert which doesn’t only provide a built form comprising of common public infrastructure, but also positively change the perspective of people towards the canal and revitalize the surrounding areas. To achieve the same a module of folly is proposed which accomodates multiple public amenities. The proposed module is designed such that it can be repeated after certain intervals and can be modified according to the requirements of it’s immediate context.
