CUBES A. Concept & Activity

Project Description This project requires myself to explore the idea of form and space through drawing, sketching and modelling in order to develop my ability to perceive, to create and articulate spaces via 3 dimensional forms and various compositions. As for myself, I chose reading as my activity to create spaces. I imagined the spaces for my chosen activity and managed to develop the relation between forms and spaces after several attempts at designing and organizing the spaces through modelling.

Reading has been always my hobby since I was a kid. So imagining the space which suits my experience assisted me to design the spaces. The concept is about typical teens romance and brings me to my fantasy when walking through the space.

B. Design Development

I was designing spaces for reading. Reading books somehow brings relaxation and calmness within myself. I chose a specific genre in novels for my reading activity which is young adult romance novels. The reason why I choose this specific genre is because I wanted to develop all the typical feelings in teens romance novels I have read when I was a teenager.

When I was making my first mock-up, I realized that I was lacking at fully utilizing the emotions and feelings within the spaces. Same goes with the second one. But I managed to develop that catchy phrase “love at first sight within the space. The arrangement of columns on the ground floor makes the space breathable.

2

The spaces began to develop further when I connected a story line of the teens romance novels to the experience and emotions. Soon after, I designed the spaces linked to the experience of the readers when they’re going through those emotions.

3

I started to think and design in details according to the phases of the typical teenage love story line in novels. I designed a 2 floors building and fully responding to the spaces with all types of experiences and emotions I felt when reading the novels.

A. Precedent study Project Description Designing an attractive recreation information centre for cycling and roller skating as activities and developing a sense of place that fits within the context of recreational information centre. It is also as one-step information platform for the public at large who are interested in these two activities. The target are mostly the frequent visitors at the garden. Architects : K2S Architects Location : Finland Design Team: Kimmo Lintula, Niko Sirola, Mikko Summanen Area : 5130.0 sqm Project Year : 2016

The new visitor centre is a pavilion which is the architectonic signature of the area. It is the first object one sees as approaching Fazer village. The entrance front of the whole area has been transformed by means of landscaping. The large, yet necessary, parking areas were planted with cherry trees and the main entrance to the visitor centre is guided through a garden of different grains. The raw materials of Fazer products are strongly present. A wooden cantilevered ceiling gives strong identity to the visitor centre. In the main entrance the visitor is confronted with the cafĂŠ and the factory shop. The exhibitions present both heritage of chocolate making and future directions. Events such as chocolate making or cooking courses can be attended. All public spaces in the visitor centre are located on ground level, which allows easy access and flexibility of all spaces.

F. Abstract Board

My abstract board is a medium for me to express my literal idea about my activities and explains my thoughts on the concept of my building. So here are some thoughts and ideas I wanted to develop from this abstract board:  Appreciating more of the details in my design.  Designing manageable spaces which assists the visitors.  Being fully responsive to the climate and views in my design.  Designing a building which is evergreen.

G. Concept Development & Design Statement

Concept  Flexible gallery area.  Reception, counter, gift shop and services will be accommodated in a structure specifically designed for visitors all over the world, with local climate and building skills influence the design.  Design a welcoming and warm interior by filling the space with natural lighting and reducing the need for artificial lighting.  Entrance to the building shall be clear and easily recognizable.  Responsive to the climate and views.  Organisable spaces.

L. Physical Model

I get to explore the relation between forms and spaces. Learnt about spatial experiences in relation to the five senses and specific intended emotional response to the spaces. I get to familiarized myself with various spatial configuration or typology. I get to experimented the spaces with different volumes and different quality of spaces through sketching and modelling.

It helps me to develop my understanding further about the requirement of recreation information centre. It helps me to understand the surrounding of the site better. I managed to design a building which responds to the climate and views. I learnt about how to organize the spaces which responsive to the views and the surrounding.

It assists me in developing the idea of my design and the concept of my building. It helps me to express my ideas and the concept of my building which responds to my design and the activity. I gained a lot of improvement of my design based on the concept as it sets my goals in designing the building. I learnt to manage and arrange the spaces according to the needs.

It helps me to develop my understanding about the quality of my design. I get to know further on how my building works and how it responds to the views. I managed to experience some spaces in my building which explains further about the concept of my building. I learnt about the difference and value of my own building and spaces. 31
