PORTFOLIO Landscape + Architecture
Yat Chan
ha n Ya tC About me
I am a dual degree student at Rutgers University currently majoring in Landscape Architecture. The beauty of the landscape has always intrigued me; how landscape architects use designs and planning to illustrate the closely connected and inseparable relationship between humans and nature. Human civilization originates from all the natural creatures on earth, while we are constructing our society along with the achievements of technology; we are one component of nature, the symbiosis between us and nature is necessary. Landscape architecture exists to emphasize the importance of environmental planning and spacious design in our civilization, in accompany with aesthetic and sciences. This realization is my catalyst to keep pursuing my path in landscape architecture.

The Epilogue
Inspiration Diagram
A redesign of Divine World Missionaries in Bordentown, NJ. Using composting burial practices to maintain the ritual of returning the spirit to where they were from, this cemetery welcomes everyone to send away their loved ones with their religious practices. The soil produced from the composting facility underground would be used to build up the volcano-like mountains for visitors, to feel that they are being watched and revolved with the love from the departed, in order to help them to let go of their feelings. The place of remembrance would be engraved with their last words for each other for them to always remember the love that never faded away.

Perspective from Afterlife “Life is a journey, and the death of us is just a completion of the journey; everything comes to an end for us to start again. Burial has been a farewell for the livings to say goodbye before the departed being embraced by nature; present your epilogue for the loved ones to leave/live with ease.

a vision of a spiritual nature

Located in Trenton, NJ, this project is a design of an amusement park that is inspired by the wildlife history in Abbott Marshlands. I took the approach of going back to the Lenape history on how they appreciate nature, which they visualize the earth was created on a turtle’s back and saw the animals as spiritual leaders. By grading out the animals who are currently living in the Abbott Marsh, including snapping turtles, the water snake, sturgeon, and the night hawk, the park I designed can let visitors enjoy the landscape personally as creators with the gratitude towards nature. 10

With the planting design of using plants that were used by Lenapes, this design appreciates the Lenape history by bringing the visitors back to their nature with their green culture. From the entrance to the landfill, the plants are arranged based on their seasonal characteristics, in order to symbolize the Lenape’s circle of life; a constant pattern of nature giving and taking away life from the earth, from spring to winter, from birth to death, from the beginning to the end.

A proposed design in the engineering building in Busch campus, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, we designed a series of cube structure to provide multiple functions that will enhance the productivity of the courtyard, such as tables, seatings and of course drone playgrounds. With the new composition of the courtyard, we also came up with suitable planting choices for the different directions of sunlight over the year.

By utilizing elevation changes to create comfortable spaces as well as playing with cool and warm of lavender and feather reed grasses, we considered the planting view in all season and applying color contrast of purple and yellow, in order the turn the area to a relaxing square for multiple recreational events, practices, and educational occasions.

A design for the New Jersey governor’s mansion, Drumthwacket in Princeton, NJ. Sustainability would only keep on generating energy when the three aspects, economy, environment, and society are balanced. New Jersey’s own culture is its different colors that include colors from all other cultures. While appreciating them, the natural geological features of New Jersey are also the gift from nature. Therefore, celebrating these two characteristics in the gardens while creating a circulation system between the visitors’ spots displays the unity and connectivity of the manmade and natural landscape in this garden.

Considering pedestrian circulation and views with the vocabulary “Leaves or Diatoms”, this design of Ginkgo biloba is placed between passion puddle and Red Oak Lane bus stop, in Cook/Douglass campus of Rutgers University, New Brunswick.
Typology Design
Model with Boardwalk
This design generates interactions between users of the typology with the addition of the boardwalk, which symbolize connection and “hear the nature” with the shape of an ear. 23
