INTR O D U C T IO N Yayasan Anak Warisan Alam (YAWA) was established in 1990 as Junior Environmental Group of Malaysia (JEGOM) and later registered as a foundation where it changed to its current name in 1996. Founded on 19 October 1996, Yayasan Anak Warisan Alam (YAWA) is primarily an environmental education provider for young people aged 4 to 25 years old, and was bestowed an UNEP Global 500 Laureate in 2001 in the Youth category. Over 500 organisations and individuals in the world have received this global award, we are pleased to say that we are the only youth organisation in Malaysia to receive this award to date. To honour this International award, the Malaysian Department of Environment, NRE, awarded the Anugerah Langkawi to our Founder, Pn Khadijah Abdul Rahman, making her the first woman in Malaysia to receive this prestigious award. Following this, Pn Khadijah was personally invited by YM Tengku Tan Sri Ahmad Rithaudeen, President of United Nations Association of Malaysia, UNAM, to become a Governing Council Member.
YAWA had organised and hosted for Malaysia, the UNEP TUNZA Children's Conference in Putrajaya attended by 250 children from all over the world in 2006. We also organised YAWA’s own conference for children, called “Sustain Today for Tomorrow.” To date, YAWA has organised over 300 environmental education events, and 6 conferences. Since 2008 till now, YAWA has been the strategic partner in the UN Local Agenda 21, (LA21), with Putrajaya Corporation, Jabatan Pendidikan Wilayah and Putrajaya Holdings; delivering environmental education activities to Primary and Secondary students from 22 schools in a programme called “Membina Hijau” through YAWA Greening Sustainable Future modules. This year, we will be celebrating our 10th year anniversary at the Galactic Greenovators Putrajaya Chapter Convention in November 2019.

Module 1 Module 2 Module 3 Module 4
: Climate Basics : Green Fingers : Green Living : Greenovation
These modules are designed to empower young people with knowledge in mitigating climate change and biodiversity loss. Our eco-education modules are age-appropriate, delivered primarily in English, and at least 70% experiential and games/activities-based in outdoor settings. We designed our delivery to be focused on encouraging high engagement through fun play, creating memorability and impact through emotional connections for the child to its surroundings, and imparting knowledge and appreciation towards all that is natural through creating relevance to their daily lives that will ensure practical sustainability. To impact the future behavioral habits of an entire generation for the benefit of our Earth’s future would require that the teachings and experiences be memorable, impactful, and useful in everyday life for human beings.
Module 1: Climate Basics Understanding the basic elements of Earth’s climate and global climate change issues affecting our entIre globe. This module covers the UN SDG as well and stresses the importance for us to act now in changing our behaviours and attitudes towards Mother Nature. Module 2: Green Fingers Understanding the magical world of forests, our ecosystem and biodiversity, and the importance of Forest Governance in maintaining the delicate balance of our planet. Module 3: Green Living Understanding natural resources and their uses, as well as the management of waste, water and energy for continuous sustainability. How our daily lives impact the environment and the role we play in it through our consumption of Energy and the creation of Waste. Module 4: Greenovation Understanding and application of environmental entrepreneurship and green innovation through the expression of what is taught on the first 3 modules. THE PLATFORM GALACTIC GREENOVATORS
YAWA’s Galactic Greenovators programme is a children’s environmental education and activation platform designed to groom young Malaysian greenopreneurs. Galactic Greenovators are adept and passionate about saving our planet through discovering, creating and applying “greenovation” in all areas of life. They are tasked with taking on the challenge to understand and apply green innovation in making our world (and even galaxy!) a better, greener place-right now, for tomorrow! A year-long programme eco-education programme based on YAWA’s GSF syllabus in action designed for school children aged 10 – 17 years old, this platform aims to bring together local and international green experts, educators, and partners to create awareness, to educate, and to guide teams of school children to become Galactic Greenovators. These children are then tasked with developing greenovation projects within their school grounds and/or surrounding communities in a 3-month project period. It is our aspiration to discover young Malaysian greenopreneurs from the participating schools that we can garner support to groom and develop for the future of our country’s green talent pool. Hence, winning projects from the schools will be furnished with a grant to further develop their project idea into a market-ready eco-product and/or service that will be able to sustain itself as an eventual social enterprise.

THE PLATFORM HUTAN KITA
Hutan Kita is a platform for young people to learn and care for Life on Land (UNSDG #15) and conservation of Biodiversity. In understanding the importance of biodiversity, ecology and conservation, these knowledge can be instilled in their young hearts for them to be more concerned for the future of mankind. On the other hand, in understanding the issues of economic needs for commodities such as palm oil plantation, agricultural needs and logging issues of the forests can also lead them to develop a sense of proportion to work towards forest governance. Hutan Kita takes on an approach to outdoor, hands-on learning. A concept that seeks to encourage, motivate, engage and inspire young people through positive outdoor experiences and exposures. The outdoor classroom set up would be in the real forest ambience, to explore the forest, learning types of trees, investigate forest fauna, birds, to study forest landscape and to absorb in the natural orchestra of the forest. Advanced lessons will involve over-night camping to learn to be alert and stay vigilant, eating forest food and cooking basic food. Explore and enjoy a range of incredible trekking into the forest with experienced Forest Rangers and trained Forest Educators or Eco-Coordinators. Designed as co-curricular, recreational, and knowledge-building activities, the method of delivering the activities are fun, experiential, hands-on, exploratory, discovering, and thought-provoking, in meeting the age-appropriate levels of the learners. Natural environments such as forest reserves, forest parks in Mainland and East Malaysia will be sought for. Day trips, weekends away or 2-3 weeks away that will take a long sustained approach to outdoor exposure and learning. Learners will learn to research, document, photography and share on social media to facilitate a holistic approach towards learning and sharing. Furthermore, young people involved in Hutan Kita programmes will be a part of the YAWA ‘Keep Planting Trees’ programme, a sustainable forest rehabilitation, reforestation and a continuous tree-planting project towards reducing biodiversity and mitigating climate change.
