FORUM SUMMARY 03 -Preliminaries - in Contract

FORUM 1 Summary (Rethinking Building Codes & Building Regulations post-pandemic) Space planning played an important role during this pandemic. However, a new space planning is not going afford by most of the office space but they can reduce the amount of workers in the office area with different of working shift. Then, the space for every working area can be increase and reduce the possibilities of physical contact. Other than that, every office spaces should implement the building wide-cleaning protocols such as the hand-sanitizers, hand wash liquids, and disinfectant wipes which is to train a good hygiene practice within the office space. Contact-free/hands-free technologies should also be incorporated to help aid the goal of designing a hygienic space, because I believe post pandemic architecture should not just be about re-imagining the space layout, especially when the virus are also transmitted through mass common contact of public surfaces. Also, not every existing building is possible to redesign its space layout, so building technologies such as automatic doorknobs, automatic light switches should also be further developed to assist this problem. Besides, with good ventilation being key to preventing the spread of COVID-19, a big trend could be simply opening a window - if windows can be opened, that is, since many offices are now sealed, controlled units. And where filtered air is the only option, it could be boom-time for high-end office climate control systems. China's mass adoption of this technology to address poor air quality is thought to have assisted its office workers to return to their desks more quickly.

FORUM 2 Summary (Passive & Active Fire Systems) Topic: Importance of Passive and Active fire protection systems

FORUM 3 Summary (Preliminaries - in Contract) Topic: Preliminary works

An active fire protection system takes action in helping to put out the fire but may not always function the way they are designed to work. Sprinklers could fail due to the lack of maintenance, water supply problems like frozen pipes, or even inadequate water pressure. On the other hand, passive fire protection uses systems that help control and prevent the spread of fire/smoke. It does not, however, take any type of action, such as putting out the fire. Therefore, both AFP and PFP are meant to work together during a fire, not one in place of the other. Active and passive fire protection systems can control fires. Together they help protect lives.

Construction preliminaries outline different aspects of the project. Planners and contractors get all important details of a construction project before they start working on it. Preliminaries serve the preliminary purpose in the order of the work to be done. In general, preliminaries outline different details of the construction project when it nears the end of the planning stages. They lay out the information required by the contractors to analyze the project, finalize it and record its details. Preliminaries provide essential details for the smooth execution of the project. They also provide the goal that should be achieved at the completion of the project such as the completion date and budget.

Passive fire protection is the use of building components to control or limit fire. Walls, floors, and ceilings can be designed and constructed to resist passage of fire and smoke. For example, a wall with a one-hour fire resistance rating is built as a barrier to resist the passage of a standard fire for one hour. These barriers are arranged to provide compartmentation: they subdivide the building into compartments to reduce the size and spread of a standard fire.

Pre-construction information is included in one of the lists for preliminaries as it is important for the designers and contractors. The information included, the project, planning and management of the project, health and safety hazards, including design and construction hazards and how they will be addressed, and information in any existing health and safety file. It should be prepared early in the project so that it can be provided to designers and contractors as part of the tendering or procurement process. This enables those preparing bids to assess the resources they will need to allocate to perform their duties under the regulations.

PROJECT - Systems, Services & By-law Application

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEEK SUMMARY For Professional Development Week (PDW), I have registered for the Sector-Focused Engagement by TENBY SCHOOLS SETIA ECO PARK, "Recruiter's Insights" by NESTLE, "Financial Literacy for Fresh Graduates" by StashAway, "Surviving Your First 30 Days...and Beyond" by AIRASIA, "A Career in Marketing” by McDonald’s and Sector-Focused Engagement by VERITAS. From all the workshops that I attended in the PDW, I learned about the skill of preparing a good resume from the sharing session. I am clear on what to include in a resume and get the idea of highlighting important points or keywords in the resume. I got the idea of designing a resume to the position, which should be tailored to the specific skills. Also, I will double check my resume to avoid some minor mistakes such as spelling or grammar mistakes when preparing a resume. As a fresh graduate who don't have working experience, it is suggested that we talk about our projects, internships, industrial visits, trainings and additional value-added course in the summary section, so that even if a recruiter chooses not to go through the entire detailed resume, at least the summary section will be good enough for them to understand and gauge our worth as a candidate. Besides, I discovered that even the simplest things on earth could be turned into something amazing if we put enough creativity and effort into working on them. I learned that every design has its weaknesses and strengths and working with a group can help discover what they are. We challenged each other's preconceptions about what would and would not work. We could also see the reality of the way changing a design actually affected its performance. Overall, I am glad that I had chance to take part in something which did not sound so amazing at first but at the end appeared to be so glamorous. It was a good chance for me to attend those workshops. The speakers gave us a lot of tips about interview guidelines, career information and of course they answered our biggest question. They were so knowledgeable people; they shared their experiences with us, and it helped me to gain confidence. It was a very helpful and entertaining week and the only thing that we were sorry for was the limited time because there was a lot to learn from those amazing presenters. Moreover, we had the opportunity to meet senior who were also from Taylor’s University. As for the workshop, I must say that mine began with anxiety and ended with great sorrow because the workshop only lasted one hour each. I was trying to get all the information that I possibly could while racing against time and when I found out that the time was over, I realized that I still had tons of questions to ask. I think that it would be nice if we could have longer time for the workshops. However, luckily other students managed to ask the questions. This workshop helped me to improve my selfconfidence and made me to understand what future career is like. I feel very lucky for having attended this workshop. It was useful and worth it. I would like to thank to all the speakers and people who organized this wonderful event. I will always remember their tips and suggestions and it will make me a better person.
