The eyewear industry has broadly divided into three age categories; kids, adults, and old age. Eyeglass is a product that has very little scope for exploration considering the number of parts it has, and challenging to bring out a new collection every time. Hence, this project focuses on finding a gap and identifying the target audiences to design. I wanted to see how much I can explore considering the above mentioned challenges.

05 Factors to Consider when Buying a Frame IN A PERSON

011

YASH MISTRY | PRODUCT DESIGN | ANANT NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

Eyeglasses should be viewed as complementary drapes to enhance our natural assets, after all, eyes

Skin tones

are the windows to the spirit. Skin tones are classified as “cool” or “warm” depending on the hue of your skin. The undertones of a cold complexion are blue or pink, whereas the undertones of a warm complexion are “peaches and cream” or yellow. Because it is a blend of blue and yellow, olive skin is considered cool.

Eye color Because of the wide variances in eye color, eye colors are usually a secondary factor in establishing your coloring. Blue eyes, for example, can range from a cold almost-violet to a warm pastel blue-gray. Brown eyes can vary in color from a light cider tone (warm) through a medium-brown to a chilly almost-black.

Hair color Hair colors are also classified as warm or cool. Strawberry blond, platinum, blue-black, white, auburn, salt-and-pepper, and ash brown are all cool colors. Golden blond, brownish black, brown-gold, and “dirty grey” are all warm hair colors.

06 Factors to Consider when Buying a Frame IN A FRAME

013

YASH MISTRY | PRODUCT DESIGN | ANANT NATIONAL UNIVERSITY

If you want to look your best, any frame shape must complement the structure of your face. One of the most essential

Shape

considerations to follow when choosing a frame type is to balance out the characteristics of your face shape.

The shape of the eyeglass frame should contrast with your face shape.

Size The eyeglass frame’s size must be proportionate to the size of the face.

Color The color of the eyeglass frame should highlight the wearer’s features, such as a green frame to complement green eyes.

You’re only one step away from determining your face shape now that you’ve finished the first step and noted all of your facial measurements. Measuring your face isn’t enough; taking note of your facial features is also necessary for determining your face shape. Hence, the second step to determine your face shape is to consider your facial features.

Exploring possibilities of angular form Similar to the previous one, angular forms are explored by also playing with the size of the corner radius. The other benefit of this exercise was that with a slight change in angle or the size of the corner radius, it completely generated a new form. This same thing applies to the round shapes too.

A form or shape becomes fascinating only with details in it. The detail that is paid attention to here is how the inner and outer strokes of the shape flow and, at a certain point, complement each other creating a highlighting area. To better understand, refer to the areas marked on the image. Also, playing with thickness variation makes sure that the form doesn’t feel monotonous.

Conclusion & the final three designs The evaluation process became much more polished with all of the opinions obtained from peers and knowledge of the numerous viewpoints they look through. After going over everyone’s ideas and spreading them out on a table, three final designs were chosen based on the following criteria: they suit all face types, they have a form that doesn’t exist, they have a fascinating flow within the form, have highlighting details, and, most importantly, they contain the keywords from the brief, mature yet funky. The keywords are reflected in the combination of all three aspects, shape, color, and material. The details of each form are described in greater detail, as well as why they were chosen.

Frame 3 This frame feels like an expressionist version of a standard rectangular frame. Due to its edgy form, it looks bold, but since the angles are exaggerated and are thick at the end pieces, that bit of detail makes it look funky. The flow of lines at the top, from the junction of the nose bridge to the end pieces of the frame with a thickness variation, complements the eyebrows.

Refinements & Prototyping

Refinements to resolve the shape Without further refinement, going straight to prototyping would have left each frame shape unresolved. A few minor adjustments were required, some of which were suggested by peer feedback. For each shape, multiple iterations of changes were made, and then a couple of them were consolidated for one master change. The modifications made to each frame shape are illustrated further.

Frame 9 A slight narrowing of the space between the nose The inner perimeter’s width has been somewhat increased Between the nose area, the curve shifts from inward to outward

Frame 3 The distance between the nose bridge is slightly widened, which refines the proportions of the rectangles overall

Frame 7 The gap between the nose bridge has been widened Because the end pieces were previously pointy, they are compressed and thickened The bottom circular portion’s total perimeter has been enlarged

I remember the words told by one of the people whom I interviewed that, “designing eyewear is a challenge as you have very less area and parts to play with.” I faced this problem during my ideation stage about how much more new forms I could produce. But as the lines started to flow and I started paying attention to the details and flow of lines, connecting them harmoniously, the process got easy.

comes to eyewear.

It helped me keep track of every day as it was constantly in front of me. One of the deliverables of this project was product visualization. Due to this project, I got to polish my rendering skills, and the time given to it was worth it. Being an introverted personality, I don’t speak up much. However according to the project requirements, I had to take a lot of interviews which built up my confidence and improved my communication skills.

compelling case. That’s where I made a mistake. For instance, there are numerous resources on the internet that describe which frame shape is best for whatever facial shape. However, if I had undertaken my own empirical investigation, it would have provided more support for my claims. It’s difficult to understand shape and come to a conclusion. Because I lacked validation, I couldn’t maintain up with the terms I had (mature yet funky). I didn’t have a compelling argument for why a certain frame form would be bold and mature. It would also differ depending on who you put it on. As a result, determining a shape’s characteristic in isolation is insufficient because these glasses will be on someone’s face for the majority of the time.
