COVID-19 gives us a real opportunity to rethink housing, which is a real problem in Paris, where it is very expensive to find accommodation, and where social life is generally outside of housing.

The new village as a flea market is a place that rethinks social housing as a mixture of housing typologies and degress of publicness that would create the liveness of the building.

In times of quarantine, social housing residents generally do not have the opportunity to take refuge in the countryside. To rethink social housing, we take inspiration from the very touristy flea market of Saint Ouen at the gates of Paris characterized by the charming, convivial and artistic lifestyle of the inhabitants and flea markets, but also the inability of this site to easily control the flow of people. This makes it a site that presents a weakness in the context of a pandemic. By remaining confined to their homes, people have become aware of the cramped space in which they live, most of them without access to the outside world. And then the pandemic makes them more and more eager to get out of the big metropolis, which is considered a suffocating place.

To do so we make our accommodation rests on a valley of public spaces containing shops, offices, cultural and tourist sites. Shared circulation and spaces create interpenetration of public and private spaces. Tiny houses are shaped to create a roof pathway. The roof pathway provides security during a pandemic and a new freedom for the inhabitants.

Although dynamic and cultural, Paris is the city in France with the most marked sense of loneliness and isolation. This feeling is also very present in the large complex of buildings. In contrast, the flea market is a place with a great sense of community. Our aim is then in times of pandemic to enhance the sense of community by making it easier and natural between inhabitants. We wish to recreate the village lifestyle of the flea market.

Green areas and rooftop villages are accessible for every inhabitants. So as to allow the inhabitants to constantly rediscover their habitat like the flea market, which is constantly renewed while preserving its singular spirit.
