THE BEAR AND THE HARE -Fable
A Bear had been collecting food to survive the harsh winter that it saw coming. He gathered a large amount of fruit over ten days. There was a Hare who always complained because she saw the Bear collecting a lot of food. The Bear always told the Hare that collecting food was necessary in order to survive the winter, and the Hare should do the same and not to be just frisking everywhere. The Hare never paid attention to his words, and she preferred jumping and leaping through the falls autumn leaves. When winter came, the responsible Bear went to his burrow and with a good amount of food he could survive the winter. Since the Hare had nothing to eat, she had to swallow her pride and ask the bear to give her shelter and share his food with her in order to not die of hunger in the harsh winter. “Sloth makes all things difficult, but industry all easy; and he that riseth late must trot all day, and shall scarce overtake his business at night.”

THE CACTUS -Fairy tale
The prince of a country had been bewitched by an elf, and turned into a cactus and put into the most isolated place in the desert. He spent a long time not seeing or talking to anyone and no one could help him. One day a young princess got lost in the desert and found the cactus. So, he asked her: “Where are you from and where are you going, fair maiden?” She answered: “I went out from my father’s castle to walk and soon, I found myself in this desert. I’ve been walking for more than six months trying to return home, and it has been such a long time since I drank anything.”

The cactus said: “Take the knife at my side and cut one of my arms. Inside you’ll find plenty of drinking water.” The young princess did thus. Inside the arm that she cut, she found a lot of water and she drank it right away. But after a few hours the young princess was thirsty again and asked the cactus for more water. Then, the cactus said: “If you are thirsty, cut one of my arms. Inside you will find plenty of drinking water.” The young princess again cut another of his arms and drank more water. The next day she woke up and felt the need to drink more water. So she asked the cactus for more water from his arms. So, he said: “If you are thirsty, cut one of my arms...” She cut again an arm and drank water. Soon she felt the need to continue on in search of his father’s castle, but the cactus told her to not leave him,

and that he could help her find her father’s castle, but she had to promise to marry him. The young princess refused because she thought her life with a cactus would not make sense, so she left. After three days she met again the cactus. She could not understand why she was back there with him. When the cactus saw her again, he said: “You came back here by fate, you are the only one who can free me from this spell, but you must promise to marry me.” The young woman refused again, and she said she returned because of the strong wind, which made her walk in a circle. She decided to leave, but not before asking the cactus let her cut one of his arms for drinking water, so the cactus let her do it. Three days later she met the cactus again. The cactus happily asked her to marry him and he told her that she was the only one who could free him from the spell.
MINI-BOOK OF STORIES FOR CHILDREN YEISON HERNÁNDEZ 6
Finally, the young woman accepted. Then the cactus said that to free him from the spell, she had to go to the elf’s house and steal his gold ring. The cactus told her how to get to the elf’s house and achieve the plan: “At midnight, a strong light on the ground illuminates the road heading towards the elf’s house. You have to follow it and walk barefoot so the elf does not hear your footsteps. When you reach the house, take the key which is under the doormat. This key opens the door. When you enter the house you have to walk through a corridor and find a room with a red door which is the room where the elf keeps his treasures. When you enter the room, you go to the chimney, and look for the gold elf’s ring among the ashes. Then you come back with the ring.”
At midnight the young princes was prepared to go to the elf’s house. She removed her shoes. There was a path on the ground illuminating the way. She followed the road and after about an hour she got to the elf’s house. She headed for the door, but when she lifted the rug, there were three keys with the same shape, but with different colors: a red one, a green one, and a blue one. Firstly, she

tried with the red one. When she put the key in the lock, three giant sand statues rose from the ground and walked towards her. Quickly, she tried with the green key. When she put the key in the lock, three more sand giant statues rose from the land and headed towards her. Finally, she tried the blue one, and the door opened and she entered the house quickly. She kept walking and found a huge corridor with many doors, but none of them were red. At the end of the corridor was the red door where the elf kept his treasures. She entered, and a huge amount of gold, silver, and bronze things lay on the floor. The elf was standing there waiting for her. So, the elf said:
“Insolent girl! You could get my treasure room, but you cannot take my gold ring.” The gold, silver, and bronze objects melted quickly, and coming together, they became three soldiers; one made of gold, another one made of silver, and the last one made of bronze. The three soldiers attacked the girl.

Quickly, the Young princess ran across the room and she reached the chimney, where she dipped her hands in the ashes trying to find the gold ring, but it was not there. The elf had it on his left ring finger. She ran to the elf, but the three soldiers did not allow her to approach. So she took a few handfuls of ashes and threw them into the eyes of the soldiers, which made them blind. She did the same with the elf, and took the gold ring from his left ring finger. She quickly ran down the corridor towards the front door. When she went out from the house, the six sand statues were waiting for here outside, but she mustered up her courage and ran up the illuminated path. Then the six sand statues, the three soldiers, and the elf began to run after her, but she ran so quickly that soon she reached the place where the cactus was. Once there, she showed the cactus the gold ring. The cactus said to her: “Put the ring on one of my thorns. Then, press your left ring finger towards the thorn you put the ring, until a drop of your blood comes out of your finger.”

She did what the cactus told to do. When the drop of blood came out from her left ring finger, the cactus prince regained his human shape, the sand statues evaporated, the soldiers converted to their original state, and the elf lost his powers and became an old cactus.
Finally, the prince and the young princess left the desert. The kingdom of the prince and the kingdom of the princess organized together a beautiful wedding. The princess and the prince lived together happily ever after.

THE TALE OF MORPHEA-RAPUNZEL The Brothers Grimm -Fractured fairy tale
Once upon a time, there was a huge and beautiful castle located in the center of a pretty forest, but our story does not begin there. Next to the castle there was a small house where a woodcutter and his daughter Morphea lived. The girl was very beautiful in the eyes of her father, but in the eyes of other men she was terribly ugly. Her hair looked like straw, her eyebrows met in the middle and her lips were so thick that sometimes people confused her with a fish. Soon her thirtieth birthday approached, and still she longed for a prince to come to her house to ask for her hand in marriage, but unfortunately, she never got that

prince she wanted, nay, neither a common man would go to her house to ask her to marry him. The day of her birthday came, and her father organized an amazing party which had only two guests: his daughter and himself. After the party, his sad daughter went to her room, and she thought she was going to die alone and would never have a man beside her except her father. Suddenly a godmother appeared behind her. “Why are you so sad beautiful lady?” The godmother asked.
Immediately, the girl turned around and showed her face to the godmother. “Excuse me! Why are you so sad lady?” The godmother asked again. “I have reached my thirties and no prince has come to my house to ask for my hand in marriage” the girl said. The godmother exclaimed:

“I can help you! With my super awesome magic wand I will turn you into a beautiful princess. Then I will take you to a tower that stands in the middle of the forest, which has no doors or stairs. Only at the top, there is a tiny window. I will make you grow beautiful, golden hair, which will be so long that I can climb it to visit you. You will be there until you find a handsome prince who will ask for your hand.” She accepted, and the magic of the godmother took effect. After a few days, the prince of the castle mentioned at the beginning of the story went for a walk in the woods and passed near the tower and heard a beautiful melody coming out of the small window. It was Mozart’s fortieth symphony. So the prince stopped to listen. He wanted to go up to the top floor of the tower, but he could not, so he decided to go back to his palace. However, this symphony had enraptured the prince, so that all the days he went to the forest to listen to the song.

One time he found himself hidden behind a tree, he saw the godmother was coming and heard her call up from below: “Morphea, Morphea, let down your hair!” Morphea released her braids, and the
godmother
scrambled and climbed to the top of the tower. “If this is the ladder to climb up there, I will also try my fortune” said the prince. The next day, when night was falling, the prince walked to the foot of the tower and cried: “Fiona, Fiona, let down your hair!” But the long braid did not appear. “Fiona, Fiona, let down your hair!” The prince exclaimed again. A voice came from the top of the tower that said: “It’s Morphea, not Fiona!” “Morphea, Morphea, let down your hair!” The prince cried once again. Then, the braid tumbled down, and the prince climbed up.
MINI-BOOK OF STORIES FOR CHILDREN YEISON HERNÁNDEZ 14
At first, Morphea was happy to see the handsome prince in the tower there with her. The prince spoke to her so kindly and explained that the melody coming out of the top of the tower had impressed his heart, that he had not enjoyed a moment of peace until he found a way to climb up, since he was a fan of Mozart, but she explained that it was the only song she had in her laptop, and she played it to avoid dying of boredom in that tower among the woods. Morphea was excited to hear the prince talking, and though to herself that at last she had found the man of her dreams, and when he asked her to marry him, she replied, putting her hands on his hand: “Yes, I want to go with you.” So both of them joined their lips in a kiss and the spell was broken. The tower disappeared, and the young, beautiful Morphea returned to her original shape. Seeing what happened, the prince fled at full gallop on his horse, while the poor Morphea run behind him to try to achieve her dream of having a prince as her husband.

IN THE LAND OF ALGAMA -Science Fiction
It was five a.m. and the Russian government was about to launch its Anitchka 35 spaceship. Four crewmembers were in the spacecraft ready to take off for the moon and make a study which would take several days. The 10 seconds to liftoff of the rocket from the Cosmodrome of Baikonur in Kazakhstan started. People were watching excitedly and started counting: ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one‌ lots smoke and flames started coming from the base of the rocket, propelling it towards the sky. The crowd got excited and yelled when observing the rocket taking off. After a few seconds the rocket disappeared from the sight of the people.

Three days after, the four crewmembers of Anitchka 35 landed the rocket and made their study on the lunar surface. Sergéi, one of the crew, took a piece of moon rock and put it in a plastic bag. Ivka was responsible for observing the rock through a microscope, while Dmitri and

A few seconds after taking off from the moon, an enormous meteor approached with great speed that they were not able to dodge and hit the spacecraft with such force, it caused them to lose consciousness. After a few hours, Ivka opened her eyes and looked around, and realized that they had found a land she had never seen

before. Immediately, she woke her companions to observe the strange place where they were in. “Where are we?” Dmitri asked. “I do not know. Maybe in some strange place on Earth.” Ivka said. “I’ve never seen or heard of this strange place!” Marianna exclaimed. Sergéi removed his helmet and pick up some soil from the floor and looked closely… “This is sand, but blue!” Marianna proposed that they to walk to find someone who could guide them and indicate to them where they were. After having walkd for a few minutes, Dmitri saw a strange creature in the distance that hid behind the branches of a bush. The bush seemed alive, since it moved and fed from the blue ground of the place. Dmitri immediately went running to see who it was, but the creature escaped and run into the strange bushes. Shortly afterwards, a countless number of strange creatures with blue skin, two eyes like ordinary human

crewmembers in cells, where they remained for a few hours. They were taken in front of an enormous creature that called himself “the Supreme.” “Where do you come from, and what are you doing on our planet?” asked the Supreme. “We are astronauts. We come from Earth. We were doing a study about the surface of the moon, but when we returned to Earth we were hit by a meteor and we got unconscious. Then, we woke up and found ourselves on this strange planet.” Ivka said. “Let me make things clear to you, beautiful woman. This is Algama, and it is not a strange planet. We have existed much longer than Earth, and you are many light years away from your planet. Moreover, I think it would be impossible for you to return home, unless you have a specialized extremely fast spacecraft,” the Supreme said, “We will let you to stay on our planet long as you respect the established laws: none of you will cause revolutions on the planet, nor kill people and most importantly; do not approach my beautiful daughter,
MINI-BOOK OF STORIES FOR CHILDREN YEISON HERNÁNDEZ 20
Thira. You can feed on what is around you, and you can also interact with people of Algama”
The four astronauts were flattered to have been accepted in this place, but they wished to return home. However, the place looked very kind and friendly, much better than Earth, where people had daily toils and had conflicts and pollution. In Algama everyone worked together. Every evening there were festivals where they sang, danced, and interacted. Everything looked nice. In a few days, the crewmembers forgot everything about Earth. However, Sergéi did not feel comfortable in this place. He missed his family and his planet. Every evening when the festival was beginning, Sergéi decided to walk to a huge, beautiful lake where he sat at the shore to think. On day he heard some noises coming from a bush. He went over there and a strange voice said: “Do not get too close! The bush could bite you.”
MINI-BOOK OF STORIES FOR CHILDREN YEISON HERNÁNDEZ 21
And a beautiful woman from the planet came out from the bush and said: “I’m Thira, the Supreme’s daughter.” Immediately, Sergéi walked away from her. “Wait! Do not be scared! My father is sleeping he will not notice that we’ve seen each other.” Thira said walking towards Sergéi. “Your father made it clear that we should not approach you.” Sergéi said. “He says that to everyone. He is a very possessive father. I’ve realized that you frequent this place a lot. Me too. This is where I come every night to clear my mind.” Thira said. “Yes, I do. This is a beautiful place. You can see the beautiful sunset of the planet. The three moons are amazing; you can see them closer than in Earth.”
MINI-BOOK OF STORIES FOR CHILDREN YEISON HERNÁNDEZ 22
Soon, the meetings between Sergéi and Thira became more frequent. After a few days they fell in love. Both were very happy whenever they spoke. Sergéi told her about his adventures as an astronaut. Thira told him about how amazing the planet was. Sometimes they rode unicorns, or stopped to listen to the mermaids of the lake singing at night when the three moons of the planet did not shine. Both had fun when they were together. One day, Dmitri, Ivka, and Mariana decided it was time to go home. So they asked the Supreme to give them a spacecraft to return to Earth. The Supreme gladly gave them a giant spacecraft which had large turbines to move at an incredible speed through space. Dmitri told Sergéi that they would take off for Earth in two days, but Sergéi would not go without Thira, so he proposed to Thira that she went with him. Thira was in agreement to go with him to Earth. It was time to take off from the planet. The four crewmembers and Thira entered the spacecraft. People and the Supreme of Algama saw how the spacecraft took off. The four crew members were saying good bye through the window, when the Supreme saw Thira in the spacecraft with them and he said:
MINI-BOOK OF STORIES FOR CHILDREN YEISON HERNÁNDEZ 23
“Stop those guys! They took my daughter!” A large quantity of squads in spacecrafts headed towards them, but they couldn’t reach them.
A few months later, Sergéi, Marianna, Dmitri, Ivka and Thira reached Earth. Sergéi decided to take Thira with him to his home and stay there with her without any contact with other people. The other crewmembers were shown to the public, saying they had been abducted by aliens, but they escaped, although Sergéi had failed to do so. Some spacecrafts from Algama sometimes appear in the skies of the Earth in search of Thira, the Supreme’s daughter.

THE CLEVER RABBIT Told by Albeiro Hernรกndez -Short story
Once upon a time, a woman had a beautiful carrot patch. She always looked after her garden and kept it cool. But she had a problem; a rabbit always came and ate part of hes carrot patch. She was tired of the presence of the rabbit and the damage he caused in her orchard. One day, the woman thought it was time to do something with that rabbit, so she made a wax rabbit and left it in her orchard so the rabbit would touch it and she could catch the rabbit.
One sunny morning the rabbit went to the carrot patch, and he saw the wax rabbit.

“Hi, friend! Let’s eat this woman’s carrot patch! These carrots are delicious… Friend?
Tell me something… do
not leave me talking alone.” The rabbit said, but the wax rabbit obviously did not answer his questions. “Rabbit friend, if you do not answer anything I will hit you.” The mad rabbit shouted, but the wax rabbit did not answer anything. So the rabbit threw a fist to his face and his hand clung to it. “Friend… Get off me! Get off me or I will give you another fist!” The rabbit threw another fist with the other hand and it clung to it. “Friend… Get off me or I will give you a kick!” The rabbit threw a kick to him and his paw clung to it. “Friend… Get off me or I will give you another kick!” So he threw his other paw to his knee and it clung to it. “Friend… this is the last straw… Get off me or I will give you a bite!” And so he did it… and his teeth clung to the wax rabbit. A few minutes later, the woman came out. “At last I caught you…you will never eat my carrot patch again.” She took him off from the wax statue and put him

into a sack. Then, she tied the sack strongly, and left it in the kitchen while going for firewood to cook the rabbit.
The rabbit heard a fox that approached to eat the hens of the woman.
“Fox friend … help me, please! Untie me! The woman is going to cook me!” The rabbit cried. The fox untied him immediately. “Let’s play a joke on the woman!” The rabbit said. The fox and the rabbit put some hens and a few plates in the sack and tied it strongly. Then, they hid under a table.
MINI-BOOK OF STORIES FOR CHILDREN YEISON HERNÁNDEZ 27
When the woman arrived, she opened the sack and saw her hens inside the sack. The fox and the rabbit burst out laughing and the lady heard them. As soon as she saw them, she ran to beat them with the stick in her hand.
The fox could not escape and was hit hard. During the mess in the kitchen, a bottle of honey on the table turned over and honey fell on the rabbit’s head. As soon as they had the opportunity to escape, they did. Along the way, the rabbit said to the fox: “Fox friend, please, carry me! The woman hit me so strong in the head and I can’t move.” The struck fox carried the rabbit on his back. “Walk… Walk… through the valley! The patient carries the healthy.” The rabbit said. “What did you say?” The fox asked. “That my head is killing me!” The rabbit exclaimed to correct himself.
